The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the just concluded election, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi have congratulated the governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike on his re-election. Wike won the election with 886,264 votes, while Mr Biokpomabo Awara of the African Alliance Congress (AAC) who came second scored 173,859 votes Atiku in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja described Wike’s victory as hard earned re-election. “It gives me much pleasure to see a political force for good, such as yourself, overcome the anti-democratic forces of dictatorship and oppression. “The PDP is blessed to have a political gladiator, such as yourself on our side. ” I am favoured to count you, Gov. Wike, as my friend and brother, and Rivers as my second home.” Atiku said that as Wike’s was savoured by men of goodwill all over Nigeria, he was sure that the governor would continue the pattern of good works for which he had become known for. “Nigeria needs men like you. Men who can remain firm, unbowed and resolute in the face of trying times. “You have proved that you have character under trial, and not just when the going is good. “Such refinement will stand you in good stead as, by the grace of God, you finish the good work you have started in Rivers.” On his part, Obi, in a statement issued by his Media Office said that all lovers of democracy must salute the resilience of the people of Rivers who stood in defence of their votes. He said that the people would not have been bigoted to Gov. Wike if he had not made appreciable impact in their lives through delivery of good governance. He advised Wike to remain focused on the delivery of democracy dividends to his people and not get distracted by the needless bickering and provocation that greeted the election. The former Anambra governor said that the people of Rivers didn’t need to go through the stress given the outstanding performance of their governor in the last four years. https://archivengr.com/atiku-obi-congratulate-gov-wike-on-his-re-election/ |
India’s space agency ISRO has successfully launched the electronic intelligence satellite EMISAT from its Sriharikota space launch station in the southern part of the country. The payload was accompanied by 28 Nanosatellites, which India launched on behalf of foreign clients. The 436-kg EMISAT satellite was launched from the Sriharikota launch pad in southern India, and was now orbiting 749 kilometres about the Earth, the Indian Space Research Organisation said. Defence analyst Brahma Chellaney said the low-earth orbit EMISAT would serve as a military reconnaissance and intelligence satellite. The satellite will monitor and give locations for enemy radar sites, broadcaster NDTV reported. 24 of the small satellites were from the United States, two from Lithuania and one each from Spain and Switzerland. The launch came days after India conducted an anti-satellite missile test and claimed to become the fourth “space power’’ possessing anti-satellite weapon capability. For the first time, the public was invited to view the launch from the space centre. https://archivengr.com/india-launches-satellite-to-detect-enemy-radar-28-foreign-payloads/ |
Trading in the shares of Diamond Bank Plc has been placed on full suspension following the court sanction of the Scheme of Merger with Access Bank Plc. The Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) in a notification to its dealing members posted on its website on Wednesday said that the full suspension takes effect from March 20. “Dealing members are hereby notified that following the court sanction of the Scheme of Merger (Scheme) between Access Bank Plc and Diamond Bank Plc, trading in the shares of Diamond Bank has been placed on full suspension,” it stated. The exchange said that the suspension was required to prevent trading in the shares of the bank in order to determine shareholders who would qualify to receive the scheme consideration. It noted that Diamond Bank obtained the court sanction of the scheme on March 19, being the effective date of the scheme. The NSE stated that the bank’s shareholders passed a resolution approving the merger between Diamond Bank and Access Bank Plc at the court ordered meeting of the bank held on March 5. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exchange will delist Diamond Bank from the daily official list at the exchange after the merger. NAN reports that the shareholders of Diamond Bank and Access Bank at an Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs) of both banks gave approvals for the merger. Mr Herbert Wigwe, Access Bank Chief Executive Officer, told shareholders at the EGM that the merger enabled Access Bank to acquire a bank with 17 million retail customers and the most viable mobile payment platform. Wigwe said that the expected revenue and cost synergies were material and promised significant long term value. He said the bank, after the merger, would attract more opportunities such as trade finance from international partners. “With the final merger of both banks and the status of the resulting entity as ‘the largest bank in Africa’s largest economy,’ this greatly bolsters the bank’s brand, opening doors of opportunity both in local and international markets,” he said. He said the merger was expected to produce the largest banking group in Africa based on its number of customers with more than 29 million customers. “The resulting entity which will maintain the brand name Access Bank, but with Diamond Bank colors, will have more than 29 million customers, 13 million of whom are mobile customers,” he said. |
Trial of the suspended Chief of Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, opened before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday with the embattled top judicial officer already seated in the dock for the proceedings. Justice Onnoghen had earlier on February 15 pleaded not guilty to the six counts of false and non-declaration of assets preferred against him by the Federal Government. The trial was on March 12 adjourned till Monday following Onnoghen’s absence from the CCT on health grounds. His lawyers, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), had produced a medical report indicating that Onnghen was suffering from toothache and high blood pressure, as a result of which he had been advised by his doctor to observe a bed rest for 72 hours. The tribunal led by its chairman, Danladi Umar, had then adjourned till Monday (today) for the commencement of trial. Justice Onnoghen was at the CCT much earlier for the proceedings scheduled to commence by 10am on Monday. His presence at the CCT on Monday indicated that he had recovered from the ailments complained of. Meanwhile, shortly after Monday’s proceedings started, the prosecution led by Aliyu Umar (SAN) called its first witness, Mr. James Opala. Opala, a Senior Investigation Officer of the Code of Conduct Bureau, is now in the witness box testifying. |
A former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has said that he has not agreed to join All Progressives Congress (APC). Contrary to earlier reports, Gbenga Daniel said he has only freed his supporters to join either the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or the APC. It will be recalled that OGD earlier announced his exit from partisan politics. Earlier reports indicated that Gbenga Daniel has joined the APC, but the respected politician said he is yet to agree. In a response to counter earlier reports, Gbenga Daniel said: "I have not agreed. Whereas my people are free to move, I am yet to decide finally if I want to reenter partisan politics having just quited. "The meeting agreed that my resignation from the PDP was in order. The meeting vehemently disagreed with my decision to quit partisan politics. "The meeting raised a motion that I should lead them into APC which motion was unanimously adopted. "I earlier on in my speech said that I have freed them and they can choose to stay in the PDP or join APC or any other party of their choice since I have decided to be non partisan to which they all responded that APC is their choice having worked for Dapo Abiodun on my instruction. "Mrs Apampa in her closing speech then propounded the Duck Theory literally meaning that they will move ahead to APC and will drag me along behind them. I made no further comments and the meeting ended." https://archivengr.com/breaking-i-have-not-agreed-to-join-apc-gbenga-daniel/ |
