The Nigeria Labour Congress in Borno State has insisted that the state government must expose officials who are indicted in ghost workers’ scam.

Some top government officials were allegedly indicted in the ghost workers-related fraud, earning multiple salaries monthly.

The state NLC Chairman, Mr Titus Abana, gave the challenge at a news conference organised by Labour in Maiduguri on Friday.

Abana insisted that government must prosecute all those indicted in the alleged corrupt practice according to the laid down rules of the civil service.

He said government violated the agreement it had with union in paying 19,000 workers who underwent physical verification.

“We were discussing with the government to reconsider its position when we had the governor saying he will only pay two months salaries to 11,397 workers who have been duly captured as authentic staff of the state.

“The labour is also really disappointed to hear that the government announced about 10,000 civil servants as ghost workers even while the verification exercise was still ongoing.

“Going by the pronouncement of the Borno Government, the NLC, TUC, NUT and almost all chairmen of the state union are all ghost workers because all of us are yet to be verified.

“Also, the N2.7bn figures of overall expenditure of salaries weight of the state civil servants as pronounced by the state government was also not true.

A group within the Ondo State All Progressives Congress, APC Muslim Council, said on Thursday that it had not endorsed any aspirant vying for the governorship ticket of the party.

A statement jointly signed by the coordinator of the group, Alhaji Takuro Amidu, and the spokesperson, Akindele Ahmed, said the APC Muslim Council in Ondo State had not endorsed one of the aspirants, Mr. Olusegun Abraham.

Abraham is widely believed to be favoured by the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to clinch the party’s governorship ticket.

Tinubu’s support for Abraham has come under attack by a cross-section of aspirants within the party.

Specifically, one of the aspirants, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, had written an open letter to Tinubu, accusing the former governor of Lagos State of disrupting the unity within the party.

Abayomi had faulted Tinubu on the grounds that it was better for the national leader to allow a free and fair primary to take place rather than impose an aspirant on the party.

But Tinubu, in a reply to Abayomi, said he, like any other member of the party, had the right to choose, whoever he likes for the governorship post.

The APC group said, “The APC Muslim Council comprising Ulamas, Chief Imams, Muslim leaders and all Muslim organisations in Ondo State has affirmed that its support will only be given to a credible, God-fearing person with demonstrable antecedents.

“We will only support an aspirant who would rule with equity and justice as stated by the Holy Quran. We will only endorse an aspirant who has practical antecedents of developing his or her people and community because community development is a highly rewarding act of worship in Islam.”

The group said it would only support a Muslim/Christian ticket, adding that the best candidates should be given the opportunity to govern the state.

He added that such revenge mission would do the Igbo more harm than good. Ugwuanyi There have been public outcries, especially on the social media, inciting the students and youths of Enugu State to take laws into their hands and retaliate the attack on Ndiagu Attakwu community by suspected herdsmen, which left two dead and three persons injured. Reacting to the development, the student union in a statement jointly signed by the State Chairman of NANS, Comrade Chidi Ilogebe and its South East and South South PRO, Comrade Victor Ezenagu, described such comments as “careless, inciting and inimical to the calculated efforts being made by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to decisively resolve the issue in line with the oath of office he swore to uphold.” They said that unlike in Ekiti State, the population of Igbo living in the northern parts of the country is enormous, allaying fears that any unlawful action against the herdsmen in retaliation may likely put the Igbo in the north at the receiving end. On the call by some Igbo groups for the Enugu Governor to emulate Gov. Ayo Fayose’s actions against the herdsmen, the students said that no true Igbo leader would support any act that could lead to bloodshed or undermine the peace and unity of the country. They also stated that Gov. Ugwuanyi as a responsible leader believes in due process and constitutional way of addressing issues of this nature and should not be pushed to instigate the people of the state to take laws into their hands, as that is certainly not the best option under a democratic setting. The students who expressed confidence in the ability of the state government to ensure that justice was done on the matter, advised the governor to summon a town hall meeting with the relevant stakeholders to sensitize the people and chart a new course for the safety of lives and property.
