Politics / Obasanjo: I Made ‘Successful’ Mistakes As President by arthur2k5: 5:23am On Jul 10, 2013

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday declared that he made “successful” mistakes as Military Head of State and civilian president.

Obasanjo, who ruled the country between 1976 and 1979 as a military head and between 1999 and 2007 as a civilian President, however, took responsibility for all his actions.

He spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State during the 50th anniversary lecture to commemorate the call to the Bar of Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).

A civil war veteran and former Chief of Staff of the 3rd Marine Commando Division, Nigeria Army, Gen. Alabi Isama (retd), had recently accused Obasanjo of committing numerous blunders during his reign in government.

Obasanjo said, “One mistake I made that turned out to be successful was when I was looking for somebody to give leadership of the University of Lagos to and I chose Babalola. Some people said I made a mistake but it turned out to be a successful mistake.

“My mistakes as people say were mostly in appointments. I appointed the UNILAG Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor and the university became the best. The Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor that I appointed were acknowledged as the best at the time.

“The mother of all the mistakes was that the exposure and involvement of Babalola in the affairs of UNILAG led to the establishment of the Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti.

“If you have not seen ‘instant wonder’, go to ABUAD. Babalola used his experience as the Pro-Chancellor of UNILAG to build what today is the best and fast growing private university in the country.”

Obasanjo, who inaugurated the extension of Babalola’s Emmanuel Chambers on the occasion, said, “There are many Nigerians, but, there are not many good Nigerians of Babalola’s sterling qualities.”

Solicitor-General of the Federation, Ahmed Abdulahi, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan, described Babalola as a product of courage, perseverance, determination and humility.

The Guest Speaker, retired Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, while delivering a lecture entitled, ‘The future of Law in Nigeria’, stressed the need to improve legal education in the country.

He said, “Our legal education should be re-invigorated and made more robust. For instance, we should begin to encourage inclusion of Comparative Law in every aspect of our legal education.

“We can only neglect the history of the principles of the common law at a disadvantage. Our law faculties should be fully equipped with the access to jurisprudence and decisions of other jurisdiction to protect our laws.

“We delude ourselves in this country if we believe that, we can be a great nation without a great legal system. The path to the greatness of our nation is through a reliable, efficient, trustworthy and value-driven legal system.”

Former Pro-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Chief Wole Olanipekun, (SAN) described Babalola as a reformer, revolutionary and educationist who contributed to national and legal development.

Governors Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) and a former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni among other eminent personalities attended the ceremony.

Sports / NFF Admits Owing Keshi by arthur2k5: 5:04am On Jul 09, 2013

Nigeria Football Federation officials have admitted that they owe Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi four months’ salaries. Even though it had been reported in the past, the officials were silent on the matter until Monday when a member of the NFF board Mr. Chris Green confirmed the situation.

He, however, added that they hope to offset the bills by the end of this month.

“Yes, we owe Keshi about four months salary. It is also true that we have not paid him since the AFCON feat in South Africa,” the NFF technical committee chairman, Green, told MTNfootball.com.

The official also added, “However, we have structured our national team in a manner in which coaches get daily allowance, match bonus, free feeding while they are in camp. But we are working round the clock to ensure that by the end of this month Keshi’s outstanding are settled.”

Keshi who is on N5m a month salary has not complained publicly concerning the debt. The documents obtained by The PUNCH confirmed that the last salary paid to Keshi and his assistants was that of the month of February. The details from November 2011 when Keshi was employed show that he and his four assistants earned a total package of N11m per month for the period covered. The total pay for the coaches from 2011 to February 2013 stands at N176m by the NFF papers. Sylvanus Okpala and Togolese Houan Dinou Valere have since been removed from the pay list as the federation cut down the coaching crew of all the national teams and their backroom staff soon after the Africa Nations Cup. They cited fall in revenue and increased cost of running the national teams as the reason for their action. The Togolese was recalled to the team by Keshi on a personal arrangement. Both assistant coaches earned N1m each before they were dropped.

Even though the NFF officials and Keshi may have found a way to manage the situation concerning the salary, the same cannot be said about the match win bonus of the Eagles as they believe that the coach did not professional manage the row in Windhoek, Namibia following a 2014 World Cup qualifying match. The players rejected the $5000 offered by the NFF and insisted on getting $10000 they had previously been paid for a win. The strike caused the team to arrive late in Brazil for the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Politics / I’ll Be Satisfied When No Nigerian Is Hungry —jonathan by arthur2k5: 4:55am On Jul 09, 2013

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said his job as the leader of the country could only be complete when no Nigerian went to bed hungry.

Jonathan made the submission at the opening of a two-day summit by Rockefeller Foundation with the theme, ‘Realising the potential of African Agriculture.’

He said his administration’s successes in the agricultural sector were recognised on a global scale recently when the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations gave an award to Nigeria for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on hunger by reducing the number of hungry people in the country.

“This milestone was achieved three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals! While we are delighted at this recognition, we know our job is only done when not one Nigerian goes to bed hungry,” the President declared.

He added that to drive the nation’s agriculture, his administration had ended the approach of agriculture as a development programme, saying the government was now treating it as a business.

While saying that private sector investments were expanding rapidly from seeds and fertiliser companies and agro-processors, Jonathan said in the last one year, over $8bn of private investment commitments had been made to the sector.

He said unless agriculture was transformed in Africa, the continent’s economies would not grow as millions of Africans depended on the sector for their livelihoods.

Jonathan said, “The transformation of agriculture in Nigeria is a centrepiece of the economic transformation agenda of my government. Nigeria is known for oil. But today, many countries around the world have found oil.

“The recent discovery of shale oil and gas means that we can no longer depend solely on oil to drive the economy. With abundant land and water resources, and an abundant vibrant labour force, Nigeria has all it takes to use agriculture as its new frontier for growth.”

The President said to reduce the nation’s dependency on rice imports as the world’s largest importer of the commodity, his administration set out to make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice production by 2015.

Ambitious as this goal seems, he said his administration was on the way to achieving the target of rice-self-sufficiency.

“Dry season rice production in 2012/2013 unleashed a rice revolution across 10 states in the northern part of our country. Our farmers produced a record 1.1 million metric tonnes of paddy rice, which represents one third of the additional rice paddy we need to be self-sufficient in rice by 2015,” he said.

President, Rockefeller Foundation, Dr. Judith Rodin, commended the administration’s programmes aimed at transforming the agricultural sector.

She noted that the future of Africa depended on new innovation framework and financing strategy in transforming the agriculture sector.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said the Federal Government would train 750,000 young graduates in commercial farming scheme known as ‘Nagroprenuers.’

Adesina said, “This initiative will change the labour composition of the agriculture sector. The Federal Government will provide access to land, technical skills, business management skills and the finance for this programme.

“The programme will turn the agriculture sector into a more competitive sector.”

Health / Here’s Why You Can’t Ignore Sexually-transmitted Diseases by arthur2k5: 6:13am On Jul 02, 2013

Signs of sexually-transmitted diseases

Sometimes, the way alternative medicine hawkers trivialise issues relating to sexually-transmitted infections/diseases is astounding. For one, they dwell more on obscene description of sexuality; while they also call STIs the diseases of the socially active persons.
Well, whether this latter aspect is true or not, the undeniable fact is that STDs are dangerous infections that can wreak systematic havoc on the body, internally and externally; and, in extreme cases, they can result in agonising death.
Epidemiologists say there are more than 20 STDs, including crabs, scabies, genital warts, syphilis, AIDS, Chlamydia, Herpes, among others.
Researchers say every year, millions of STDs are passed from person to person, primarily through sexual contact, though some infections are also transmitted non-sexually.
They note that because the infections are sexually-transmitted, people don’t like to talk about them and therefore leave them untreated.
“Sometimes, the infections will go away; but usually, an untreated STD will return and the infected person will suffer grave consequences as a result,” epidemiologist, Mr. Segilola Araoye, warns.
Doctors also warn that STDs are dangerous for a pregnant woman and her unborn baby.
Family physician, Dr. Damilare Okikiolu, notes that a pregnant woman with an STD can infect her baby before, during, or after delivery.
“She may also go into early labour or suffer early rupture of the membranes surrounding the baby in the uterus.”
Worse still, doctors say, the complications of STIs in pregnant women can result in cervical cancer and other cancers for the mother. As for the unborn baby, he may suffer chronic hepatitis, neonatal sepsis (infection in the blood), damage to the brain, blindness, deafness, acute hepatitis, meningitis, and chronic liver disease.
Okikiolu laments that some of the effects of birth-related sexually-transmitted diseases may not be detected for months or sometimes, even years.
Physicians warn that there are no vaccines for the prevention of some of these STDs and that even after a patient must have been treated for any of them, he or she could still get a new infection if they don’t adhere to strict sexual health practices.
Okikiolu advises sexually active people who have more than one partner or those who engage in risky sexual behaviours to regularly screen for STIs.
While we may not be able to mention all the STDs in the books, a brief examination of some of them would do. So, here we go…
Chlamydia
Okikiolu says typically, most people who have Chlamydia don’t know they do because the bacterial infection often has no symptoms, though it’s one of the most reported STDs.
He warns, “Chlamydia is easy to cure, but if left untreated, it can affect a woman’s ability to conceive; just as it can affect the genitals, rectum, eyes and eyelids.
“Indeed, about 10-15 per cent of women with Chlamydia will develop pelvic inflammatory disease, which affects the upper genital tract. This may cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues, and can lead to infertility. It may also lead to ectopic pregnancy. In men, Chlamydia infection can spread to the testes, and can result in sterility,” the doctor warns.
The signs and symptoms of Chlamydia, Okikiolu says, usually include painful urination, lower abdominal pain, vaginal discharge in women, discharge from the penis in men, pain during sexual intercourse in women, and testicular pain in men.”
He warns that any sexually frivolous person can get Chlamydia, “but female teens are more likely to be infected because of immature cervix.”
Trichomoniasis

Celebrities / Unbelievable : 5 Artistes Who Started Their Careers With OJB (PHOTOS) by arthur2k5: 4:12am On Jul 02, 2013
Popular producer, OJB Jezreel who is suffering from Kidney failure and needs transplant definitely has made an impact in the music industry and many artistes who are successful today started their careers with him.
Check out the 5 artistes he helped jump start their careers below

1) 2face Idibia- 2Face was already a known star as a member of the 90’s/00’s R and B group The Plantashun Boyz. 2Face’s star power in the group was so great that everyone knew it was a matter of time before he went solo. In 2004, 2face struck out and went solo.

He sought the production prowess of OJB Jezreel who was the hottest music producer in the country at the time for his highly anticipated debut album. For months they slaved on songs that would end up on 2Face’s instant classic solo debut album Face 2 Face. The album catapulted 2Face into superstardom. In 2007, 2Face hooked up with OJB Jezreel again. The huge success of his sophomore Grass 2 Grace proved that you never change a winning formula. 2Face’s first two albums are widely regarded as his best LPs in his rich discography.

2) Rugged Man- Rugged Man had been lurking in the underground scene for years. Tired of the mainstream rap music he heard on radio courtesy of Eedris Abdulkareem and Rasqie he went to OJB’s Silver Point Studios to record the classic ‘Ehen’ diss track featuring Nomoreloss. The song spread like wild fire and galvanized the underground rap community.
Rugged Man wasn’t through with the diss tracks. ‘Peace or War’ and ‘Big Bros’ completed his diss trilogy aimed at wack rappers, their fans and record labels that pushed them. Thanks to OJB’s production, Rugged Man became the new champion of rap music in Nigeria. He released his debut album 2 years after ‘Ehen’- 2004. Thy Album Come featured production from OJB and other Silver Point associate producers. Thy Album Come is perceived as one of the most influential rap LPs in Nigerian rap history.

3)D’Banj- Most people think Dapo Oyebanjo’s music career started when he met JJC Skillz in London. D’Banj’s entrance into the music game goes a bit farther than that. In 2002, D’Banj recorded his first song ‘Kiss Me Again’ featuring Rugged Man. The song was produced by Jigga (OJB’s alias).
The song wasn’t a hit but it got a few spins on local radio. Buoyed by the little positive response the song got, D’Banj moved to the UK to pursue his dreams. He came back 2 years later with an unknown producer who would take over from OJB Jezreel. His name is Don Jazzy.

Durella- By 2008, D’Banj who started his career with OJB Jezreel had become a superstar. An unknown act named Durella whose style was similar to D’Banj’s knocked on OJB’s door in search of a hit.
OJB Jezreel blessed him with ‘Wiskolo Wiska’ a hard hitting club track. The song became so popular that people thought it was D’Banj who sang the song. Thanks to OJB’s production Durella had made a name for himself. Durella’s career has had more downs than up but a hit like ‘Wiskolo Wiska’ is a sparkling gem in his scattered discography.
Wizkid- If a biopic of Wizkid’s music life comes out, the flick would most likely start with him as a young thin boy watching stars troop in and out of OJB’s famed Silver Point studios.
Years before Wizkid scored his first hit with DJ Klem in the Knight House studio; he was a studio rat in OJB’s studio.

Wizkid who was barely in his teens was itching to record songs with OJB as his producer. Most times OJB told him to wait and watch. Wizkid’s recalls that while he was sitting in the studio waiting for his turn he learnt a lot of valuable lessons watching the likes of 2Face and Rugged Man record. It is most likely that Wizkid never released any of his OJB produced songs but the experience he gained chilling in the studio must have helped him become the star boy he is today.

Foreign Affairs / Nelson Mandela, The Greatest African Leader by arthur2k5: 6:32pm On Jul 01, 2013

This week, unfortunately, the topic of my paper is related to a very sad news: the farewell of the beloved Nelson Mandela affectionately called Madiba, which is the name of the Xhosa tribe to which he belongs. It is an honor to call someone by the name of their tribe.

By the time I write this column it is alive, but worse every day. His vital signs are off slowly and surely in a short time we will have confirmation of their passing.

This column today is a tribute to such a great man. Could say personality or statesman, but he was first and foremost a human being so humble and generous with his people, to call him a man is simply a form of flattery.

As part of the ongoing trial in which Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, is suing concert promoter AEG Live for wrongful death of the pop star, who died in 2009 at age 50, the prosecution has shown personal photos the three children Jackson left behind: eldest child, Prince, 16 (who testified in the case on Wednesday);
Michael Jackson was worried that he would die while preparing for the comeback tour that he didn't live long enough to take.
The late pop singer's oldest son, 16-year-old Prince Jackson, testified on Wednesday in L.A. that his dad often confided in him, although he was only 12, at the time he died in 2009, according to CNN.
"After he got off the phone, he would cry," Prince said on the first day of his testimony in his family's lawsuit accusing concert promoter AEG Live of wrongful death. "He would say 'They're going to kill me, they're going to kill me.'"
Prince explained that his father was referring to AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips and his ex-manager, Dr. Tohme Tohme.

Veteran Singer Fatai Rolling Dollar’s Confession Before Death
Veteran singer, Late Fatai Rolling Dollar made one final confession to his wife before he passed away.

According to the said wife, Zainab Olagunju, the singer asked her for forgiveness because he knew he had offended her. She revealed that he asked for forgiveness because he married another wife after her and he had previously denied it.

She says;

“On the day that he died, June 12, I got to the hospital and saw them passing a drip into his body. The last thing he told me was that he had offended me and my conscience. When I asked what he meant by that, his voice faded out completely,” she said

“I feel he wanted to confess to me that he had married another wife because he never told me about it before his death. I used to ask him about it, but he always denied it. I feel he wanted to tell me about Sherifatu Olagunju, his last wife.

“When I found out, I was not angry. As a human being, if you hear that your husband is not faithful, you would be pained. I used to see her with my husband but I did not know there was anything between them. He always denied it but when we were burying him in Ikorodu and Sherifatu saw how everything was, she calmed down and accepted me as her senior. I also took her as my junior. Three days after the burial of my husband, she came to live with me and we didn’t fight. We see ourselves more as sisters.”

Zainab gave birth to two children for Fatai, namely Jamiu and Mojeed. The couple was married in 1999 and lived together in Mushin – Lagos before they eventually moved to Agege.

After the major public outcry from Nigerian music fans and well-wishers of veteran producer OJB Jezreel, the industry heavyweights are finally stepping up. I’m told the likes of Don Jazzy, 2face and Wizkid have gone to “see” OJB in person, Kelly Hansome has just released a song “Save OJB”, and Vector‘s visit/prayer for OJB was even recorded by HipOnTV.
