on February 13, 1976, that's 39 years ago! Murtala Muhammed was killed at age 37, along
with his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde
Akinsehinwa , in an abortive coup attempt led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka, when his car was ambushed
while en route his office at Dodan Barracks ,
Lagos . He was succeeded by the Chief of
Staff, Supreme HQ Olusegun Obasanjo, who
completed his plan of an orderly transfer to
civilian rule by handing power to Shehu
Shagari on October 1, 1979. Today, his portrait
adorns the 20 Naira note and Murtala
Muhammed International Airport in Lagos is
named in his honor.

His bullet-riddled metallic-black Mercedes Benz 230.6 car is displayed up till today at the National
Museum, Onikan, Lagos state.

All the states under the control of the All Progressives Congress, APC, will declare two days as work-free to enable voters collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVC), the party said Friday. Speaking at the party’s Presidential Campaign rally in Lagos, Segun Oni, former Ekiti State governor, said that the work-free days would be before February 10. “This is to enable people who have not taken their permanent voters’ cards to do so,” said Mr. Oni, APC’s Deputy Chairman, South. The 14 states currently under the control of the APC include Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Imo, Osun, Sokoto, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kano, Kwara, Borno, Ogun, Oyo, and Yobe States.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is yet to officially extend the January 31st deadline for the distribution of PVCs. There have been reports that
the Commission had moved the deadline for the distribution of the PVCs to February 13.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has passed away, the Royal Court said in a statement early on Friday. Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz became king and Prince Muqrin was declared Crown Prince, another Royal Court statement said.
“With great sorrow and grief His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1 a.m. this morning,” the Saudi Royal court statement said. Funeral prayers will be held later in the day following afternoon prayers at Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Grand Mosque in the capital Riyadh, according to the statement. Prince Salman declared Saudi Arabia’s king Another statement said that Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud received the pledge of allegiance as the country's king from members of the royal family. After that, Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz received the pledge of allegiance as Crown Prince. Both King Salman and Crown Prince Muqrin will receive pledges of allegiance from citizens on Friday evening, the statement said.
