Crime / Re: She Was Duped Of N20,000 by ashraf267(m): 5:50pm On Apr 24
edogu:
This morning I went to a POS attendant to make a withdrawal and in the process she narrated to me how she was duped of N20,000.

According to her, a young man ( probably early 20s or less) approached her to make a withdrawal of N20,000. After inserting his ATM card into the POS machine, she returned the machine for him to insert his PIN. The transaction was successful with an inscription "withdrawal approved" written on the POS screen. At this point, there was nothing suspicious about the transaction. She counted the money and gave the young man.

How did she find out?

Well, when the young man left, another customer came to make a withdrawal using First Bank ATM, she discovered that there was no network. If that's the case, according to her, how then did the first person succed (the first person equally came with First bank ATM) when there's no network at all.

The above scenario prompted her to check her transaction history. Unfortunately, there was no trace of initial transaction (N20,000). Instead what she saw on the history was a message that the first person has exceeded his limit. Which means the transaction wasn't actually successful but the young man manipulated the machine to look so. At this point, the young man has gone to God knows where. May be to try his luck on another ignorant attendant.

According to woman, she has never had this kind of experience. There's no trace of withdrawal but the transaction was successful from the indication on the POS screen.

The guy even bought boxers worth N3000 from the attendant using the same money.

Here comes my question?
How was he able to maneuver or manipulate the POS machine for the " withdrawal approved" message to come up? Mehn, one really need to be careful especially in this difficult moment.

I am quite sure this impossible given the small amount of time customers are given the pos device to input their pin. I have a bit of experience building software for pos devices, so I know. The only way this is possible is, if the guy cancels the initial amount inserted by the pos attendant, and inserts a new amount lesser than the pre-agreed one. And this only works if the pos device doesn't show the successfully [debited] amount on the screen along with the green success checkmark icon.
Computers / Help Needed updating Macbook Pro 2011 - High Sierra - to Catalina by ashraf267(m): 2:12am On Mar 30
Hello computer gurus of Nairaland,

I recently bought a 2011 MacBook Pro with a macOS High Sierra. Obviously, this MacBook (a 2011) is no longer supported by Apple in terms of updated Mac OSs.

However, I would like to update the os to Catalina or later, as the software - Xcode, Android Studio, Vscode, etc. - I plan to use it for won't support earlier versions.

I couldn't settle with High Sierra now, so I started googling, and found this guy - dosdude1.com - who apparently has a custom Catalina macOS patch that could work on unsupported MACs like mine.

I am not too experienced with the macOS, hence I am kinda scared of making careless and more importantly, irreversible decisions. Mk everything no go lock, yunno. :-)

So I would like to ask if anyone here has successfully upgraded an unsupported Mac/earlier macOS - High Sierra - to later OSs like Catalina? If yes, could you point me to helpful resources, pls.

Or if you've used this custom Catalina patch by dosdude1 before with 0 issues?

Thanks.

Romance / Re: Religious Differences In Marriage by ashraf267(m): 1:34pm On Sep 03, 2023
elfico:
God is not religion.
Some people can't marry from other religions not because they want their spouse to change, but because they want their children to practice their religion.
3 generations ago, some of our forbearers practiced African traditional religion and would have sworn / prayer to their deity that their generation continue that path, yet here we all are.
You can't predict what religion your next few generations will practice if they practise any at all.
Of course it is almost impossible to predict. But one of your duty as parents is to increase your children's odds of following the same path you followed, religion-wise, which is why as Muslims, you may sometimes go as far flogging your kids to go to Ile-kewu, to complete their 5 daily solats, on time, etc. All of these is just to increase their chances of becoming Muslims (good Muslims, ultimately).
Programming / Re: Everybody Is A Javascript Developer On Nigerian Tech Twitter by ashraf267(m): 2:55pm On Jun 02, 2023
Devdevdev:
It's becoming a joke right now. Almost everybody is a Javascript developer. Everyone's tech stack is HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React/Vue Nodesjs and MongoDB + a bunch of CSS frameworks. Sometimes you'll see a splattering of Python and Django.

I had this mentality before but this has changed in recent months.

Hardly will you see a beginner/ junior learning C#/.Net or Java/Springboot or even SQL.
Many of these JavaScript people don't even learn Typescript or know about it's existence. The only thing they know is the same redundant bullshit that greedy YouTube marketers and Twitter hype clowns are feeding them.

No one wants to learn programming fundamentals. No one wants to learn proper OOP. No one wants to learn Data structures and Algorithms. They just want to copy and paste code from YouTube project tutorials, tweak it and push it to GitHub. Give them a simple coding test or DSA Easy question and they will fail.

They learn all the bullshit CSS frameworks but can't even solve a simple two sum problem, even with a brute force solution, and they will boldly call themselves software developers.

Everyone has the same resume. It's actually a joke now. A job posting for "Frontend developer" gets 400 applications in under one hour because that's what everyone is doing. Now I understand why the current job market is the way it is. People think they can just watch some bullshit MERN stack tutorial and that's all they need to become a developer.

Even the JavaScript clowns that know nodejs are better off than the frontend crew. Frontend is actually a dead field at the moment. I've been doing my research. Frontend developers on Reddit with 6+ years of experience are finding it hard to get jobs whereas a dev with 6months of #C/.net experience is bombarded with messages from recruiters on linkedIn desperately in need of C# developers.

Yet 90% of Nigerian Tech Twitter is made up of frontend developers. LMFAO. I wonder where they will find jobs..

I like the trend. Like is even an understatement. I'm enjoying the trend. Let everyone keep shoe horning themselves into the same already saturated box, while I focus on tech-stacks with high demand but low supply, while still having good knowledge of their saturated tech stack.

Las Las, knowledge is power and one should always be weary when majority of people are heading in the same direction. Whenever everyone is doing the same thing, then that thing is usually wrong.

"Narrow is the way that leads to heaven. And wide is the way that leads to hell." I don't blame these people Sha. Learning Javascript and CSS bullshit is easier than learning C# or Java. But it's the harder, less competitive paths that pay well in the end.
You are not smart!

If i were you,i would discard the lady and mother together. What bitterness!

They should let you go and see the biological father, just to show face and rub minds. Even the step father should come in and make them see reasons for you to go and see the real father.

Such a fiancee is full of bile, understandably implanted in her by her mother. That bile will still be there for you to wrestle with when your time comes.

She will show you shege.

As for OP, my 5 cents is: pls don't start what you can't finish. You mentioned you're doing for you wife's sake. Good, but if she's not too bothered about meeting with her biological father, then there's really no reason why you should be disturbed. Jobs/Vacancies / Re: My Experience Working In A Nigerian Startup by ashraf267(m): 10:40pm On May 26, 2023
Supreme145:
I got a job late last year in a Nigerian startup firm as a web designer on a 150k salary. We initially had a bit of back and forth cos the boss wanted me to work onsite but I insisted on working remotely because I couldn't afford relocation to Lagos at that time.

Over six months down the line and it has been a terrible experience. I've been paid just twice in 6 months, and we have not been working since the middle of last month due to a scarcity of funds. I wonder what would have been my fate if I had relocated to Lagos.

Some months we work for just two weeks or thereabout, I work beyond office hours and even during weekends. There was a period my boss would keep me awake at midnight working. I just had to comply since I haven't been able to get another job and the freelance market isn't smiling either. I'm constantly broke for someone that is supposed to be earning 150k, even though it's not much but it should be able to sustain a single guy.

I'm really confused at this point cos I feel very much unemployed. My boss would read my messages on WhatsApp and lock up. I've asked him to update me on what's going on because I feel jobless and left in the cold. He viewed the message without a reply. I don't know how to proceed from this point and would appreciate any advice now because I am slowly sliding into depression.

Oga quit the job na. After all, there was a way you got the job in the first place. And Good for you its even tech. Quit and focus on improving your technical skills for the next 3 - 6 months, and you'd be fine. It won't be easy no doubts, but at least you won't be working without pay. Package your resume & portfolio, actively push projects to your GitHub and re-fire.
Good luck, boss.

If you're a destiny helper, you will consider other factors that would make a person not to return your calls.

What if he doesn't have call credit?

If truly you want to help a person, you will drop your anger one side and either text them or call them to help them.

You just don't conclude that they refused to pick and to return calls....

What if they're under the police cell?

What if they stake their phone to get a loan to feed just to stay alive?

What if this person have given up on people because of the millions of turn downs and he doesn't believe on destiny helpers anymore?

Hi, which one did you send email to? Abuja or Lagos?
And also, whichever one it is, try to make sure the email address is correct. It can be confusing sometimes.
If you're sure you've done all the above, then I would suggest you resend the email and try to recompose it.

Please I need an answer from any good Samaritan. I know other procedures, from I-20 to DS-160, I have been following this thread for so long and i've gained alot, thanks to those that give their time to answer questions, God will bless you all.
However, what battles me is that when I want to apply to any university, for undergraduate studies, the always require High school cumulative GPA, even for international students, I heard some used WAEC and used WES for the calculation or somehow. My WAEC isn't so good, and my NECO is filled with Bs and Cs. So, my question is, is there any university that'll give me admission if I do ACT/SAT only or language proficiency test only without high school cumulative GPA?
Please anyone that can explain, God shall bless the person
Hi, you can try University of Wisconsin Parkside. You can get admitted with just your WAEC certificate and IELTS result.
But abeg, if you can write SAT/ACT write am pls, you'd be able to apply to more schools with better scholarships.

I read the News on punch via the link sent on the thread, for the Lagos surge and they stated it's for those wanting to renew their F1 visa.

I just applied for an ER on Monday on CGI Portal, I haven't got any response yet, I don't know if as a fresh F1 applicant, I can submit my documents too.

I appreciate any favourable response from anyone.

Thanks.

Yes, you can apply even as a fresh f-1 visa applicant.
