From the symptoms you described on your 2012 Toyota Camry, the blinking “R” sign together with the hard jerk when Reverse is engaged is commonly related to one of these issues:

• Low or weak transmission fluid pressure
• Dirty, burnt, or low transmission fluid
• Faulty transmission solenoid for Reverse gear
• Gear position/range sensor issue
• Internal transmission wear or mounting problem
• Electrical or transmission control module fault

Since Drive engages normally and the issue mainly occurs in Reverse, it suggests the fault may be isolated to the reverse engagement circuit or reverse clutch operation inside the transmission.

We strongly advise avoiding repeated harsh engagement into Reverse until proper diagnosis is carried out, as continued use may worsen the transmission condition.
