Ford GoBikes are going electric in San Francisco

Motivate, the company behind the San Francisco Yay (Bay) Area’s bike-share system, is adding pedal-assist e-bikes to its fleets this April. The one-year pilot will launch with 250 of these e-bikes in San Francisco, the company announced today.

The bikes, created by startup GenZe, are designed to assist riders as they’re pedaling, therefore reducing the need for much energy while biking — especially uphill. The pilot program will be part of the existing Ford GoBike network. GenZe is also the scooter provider for Scoot Networks, the scooter-sharing startup that operates in San Francisco.

“E-Bikes will give Bay Area residents and visitors one more option when traveling around San Francisco, which will help to make San Francisco more livable and reduce congestion and household transportation costs,” Metropolitan Transportation Commission Deputy Executive Director Alix Bockelman said in a statement. “We look forward to the expansion of the Ford GoBike e-Bike pilot to the other Ford GoBike cities.”

Beginning in April, riders will be able to locate the e-bikes using the standard Ford GoBike app. The bikes can go a top speed of 18 mph, which means it’s legal to ride in bicycle lanes. The idea with the pilot program is to gather feedback and work with Bay Area cities to make e-bikes permanently part of the Ford GoBike system.

Currently, there are 262 Ford GoBike stations with 2,600+ bikes across the San Francisco Bay Area. And, in news that may be upsetting to residents who argue the bike stations are taking up too many parking spots, the bike system is not done expanding. By the end of this year, there will be 546 stations featuring 7,000 Ford GoBikes, which will make it the second-largest bike-sharing system in North America.

When these bikes first launched, there was a fair amount of controversy and outcry from Bay Area residents about the amount of space these bikes take up and its effects on gentrification. In protest, people have done everything from toss a bike into Lake Merritt in Oakland, flatten all the tires at a stand in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco, strip them of their parts, hang one from a tree and vandalize them with graffiti.

Bike-sharing has become a hot space for founders and VCs alike. In San Francisco, there are a number of bike-sharing startups, including one that already operates electric, pedal-assist bikes. That startup is Social Bicycles, which recently conducted a pilot program in the Bayview neighborhood, which has historically not been served by the tech industry.

Over in China, companies Ofo and Mobike have both achieved unicorn status for their respective bike-sharing startups. In the U.S., investors have poured in $62 million to LimeBike and $8 million into Spin as both startups aim to compete against Motivate, which also operates CitiBikes in New York City.

For more on bike-sharing, be sure to check out the latest episode of CTRL+T, where I chat with Social Bicycles founder Ryan Rzepecki.

so much has been said about electric cars on nairaland front pages but not much have been said about electric motorcycle and election bicycle.

well, let me awake people who never thought about the existence of the new electric trend. electric is the future for clean energy and all manufacturer are holding firmly to this new technology, and no one want to be caught in the web unaware or lose left behind ..

1, Electric Motorcycle

Zero Motorcycles has revealed their 2018 lineup of electric bikes. They'll be the same prices as their 2017 counterparts, but reduced charging speeds, improved range, and faster acceleration will undoubtedly make them more desirable.

QUICK CHARGE

Zero Motorcycles makes some pretty fancy electric motorcycle models that can be used by both consumers and police units. With the introduction of its 2018 lineup, Zero has improved the capabilities of its bikes with a higher range and reduced charging times.

As Zero explains in its 2018 highlights post , the improvements to their electric motorcycle models are a result of the newly-revealed 6 kW Charge Tank accessory, which can be used by the company’s Zero S, Zero SR, Zero DS, and Zero DSR bikes. The new accessory enables the Zero S and DS ZF7.2 to be charged roughly an hour when plugged into a level 1 110 V outlet, while larger batteries found in the SR and DSR can be charged in around two hours using a level 2 charger.

As for the vehicles’ range, the electric motorcycle models equipped with the ZF7.2 and ZF14.4 power packs can now travel 10% farther thanks to “ improved battery chemistry .” How far they can go largely depends on the area you’re in, but Zero notes the range will top out at around 223 miles.

“It’s the highest power and energy density battery in today’s transportation industry and for its size takes you farther than any other electric vehicle on the planet,” says Zero.

A NEED FOR SPEED

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-R5qi4q6So

Riders who are all about speed will be happy to hear the new electric motorcycle models are slightly faster too. Bikes with the ZF7.2 power pack provide 11% more rear wheel torque, while the powertrains of the ZF13.0 Zero S and Zero DS have been finely tuned to offer up to 30% more power and torque. Want to quickly pass other cars and motorcycles on the road? Now you can.

According to Engadget , prices for the new 2018 models are the same as the 2017 models, with the cheapest Zero FX starting at $8,495. If you’re eyeing the base model Zero S, it starts at $10,995, though the Charge Tank will cost you another $2,295 — a high price to pay if you want to get back on the road quickly after a battery-depleting ride.

PoliticsA Cut From British Declaration File. Nigeria Has No Foundation by atiku2019manager(op):
this quote is cut out from a very lengthen British memo during the Nigerian civil war. it shows Britain never meant well for Nigeria and everything was done tactically for better administration. the only way to enslave the north is to put all together and the only way to enslave the south is to keep all together. but sadly the north are so blind to see their potentials.

What is crystal clear is that the wishes of the Biafrans were never a major concern of British planners, what they wanted, or what Nigerians elsewhere in the federation wanted, was simply not an issue for Whitehall. There is simply no reference in the government files, that I have seen, to this being a consideration. The priorities for London were maintaining the unity of Nigeria for geo-political interests and protecting British oil interests. This meant that Gowon's FMG was backed right from the start. But the files also reveal astonishing levels of connivance with the FMG's aggression.

Nigerian aggression, British support

British interests are very clearly revealed in the declassified files. 'Our direct interests are trade and investment, including an important stake by Shell/BP in the eastern Region. There are nearly 20,000 British nationals in Nigeria, for whose welfare we are of course specially [sic] concerned', the Foreign Office noted a few days before the outbreak of the war. Shell/BP's investments amounted to around 200 million British pounds, with other British investment in Nigeria accounting for a further 90 million British pounds. It was then partly owned by the British government, and the largest producer of oil which provided most of Nigeria's export earnings. Most of this oil was in the eastern region.

Commonwealth Minister George Thomas wrote in August 1967 that: 'The sole immediate British interest in Nigeria is that the Nigerian economy should be brought back to a condition in which our substantial trade and investment in the country can be further developed, and particularly so we can regain access to important oil installations'.

Thomas further outlined the primary reason why Britain was so keen to preserve Nigerian unity, noting that 'our only direct interest in the maintenance of the federation is that Nigeria has been developed as an economic unit and any disruption of this would have adverse effects on trade and development'. If Nigeria were to break up, he added: 'We cannot expect that economic cooperation between the component parts of what was Nigeria, particularly between the East and the West, will necessarily enable development and trade to proceed at the same level as they would have done in a unified Nigeria; nor can we now count on the Shell/BP oil concession being regained on the same terms as in the past if the East and the mid-West assume full control of their own economies'.

PoliticsDid Abacha Actually Buried 500 Skull In Aso Rock - Let Us Discuss by atiku2019manager(op): 9:00pm On Jan 08, 2018
this topic is about a revelation from someone in the south west that claimed abacha buried 500 human head in aso rock probably for protection.

can you imagine if this allegations are true. its very very possible as we all know how ruthless it has been during the military era even till today. they brought all the rubbish to Nigeria military government and democracy. human rituals and sacrifice.

no militrry general will deny of having nothing to do with rituals if not humans.

it might be true Nigeria get all wrong from June 12. after the capital was move from lagos with senseless reasons at the times thing have been worst off.

the fear of yoruba juju can make abacha and ibb to do all manner of things.

Ngige and okorocha better known as APC faithful Stewarts and including some IGBO populace that's hoping Igboman to grab power 2023 from buhari you guys would be disappointed.

Buhari is already romancing Osinbajo and tinubu in a bid to buy support for 2023 and i believe tinubu cant be this foolish after what they did to him the minute buhari won the election. the only way tinubu can support Buhari again is when there is guaranty to relinquish power to him or his boy the VP. and buhari needs Osinbajo so badly to contest the 2023 he does not need IGBO. the only way Osinbajo would join the race is when he can get the power by 2023. and nothing less.

he would not work for nothing, suffer for nothing and go back home for nothing who does that?

if Buhari is serious about relinquishing power to south east then you guys should start by requesting for Igbo Vice. if he cannot pick an igbo as vice then it means buhari doesn't and would never take the south east serious. buhari has not hide is hatred for the igbo people, he said it already and from his body action no one needs to tell you guys.

the votes from the south west is what counts to a typical northerner and not south east or south south.

buhari still doesn't not believe the votes from the south south and south east that's why he was quick to send soldiers python dance and crocodile but he never send soldiers to fulani or badoo cults in south west. you guys havent forgotting the 5%? have you? he is a realist who doesn't hide is feelings. his action speaks for him. since he won election he has never visited the west or east or south only when there is election.

the blame is now been shift to odigie oyegun which is to buy supports again. and APC is about to dump oyegun as the chairman of the party next year as election draws near. we all know who was behind oyegun actions against tinubu, oyegun was only working for his master.

bhhari only needs to capture south west and north to win. if you guys want to play smart don't cry of marginalisation when the south west outsmart you guys yet again.

support Atiku now!! let look the betterment of the country by removing buhari rather than where the president comes from. Say yes to restructuring

the only way buhari cause stir or threat in 2019 is retaining osinbanjo. but i don't think osinbajo would want to continue to be on the race due to collateral failure of this administration and for been sideline with humiliation.

beside that. OBJ has agreed to the fact that there is need to Igbo presidency. and IBB has already giving OBJ the choice to chose someone for the PDP national chairmanship.

now the Yoruba/Niger Delta/Igbo want restructuring and the PDP has agreed to the walkings of a restructured Nigeria.

the eligible voters in lagos majority are not Yoruba's. igbos alone hold 40% votes in Lagos and other southerners.

ekiti, Ogun, Lagos will be cleared by PDP in respective of osinbajo or not.
