Foreign Affairs / Donald Trump Ended Obama’s 8-year Tradition Of Gay Pride Month Celebration by ATstudios: 5:12pm On Jun 26, 2017
Donald Trump has ended Barack Obama’s eight-year tradition of LGBT Pride Month celebrations in the White House.

From 2009 until 2016, President Obama had issued annual Proclamations recognising the month of June as LGBT Pride Month and hosted LGBT festivities inside the White House.

Obama’s Proclamations recognised “the fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people”, as well as marking the government’s role in “working to broaden opportunity, advance equality, and level the playing field for LGBT people and communities”.

However, the tradition of Pride celebrations in the White House appears to have been ended under Trump.
Today, the Trump White House released a string of Proclamations marking June as “National Homeownership Month”, “National Ocean Month”, “African-American Music Appreciation Month” and “Great Outdoors Month” – but no such Proclamation was released for LGBT Pride Month.

Likewise, no LGBT Pride Month events at the White House have been announced.

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi knocked the Trump administration in her own Pride Month statement.

She said: “As we mark LGBT Pride Month, we honor the LGBT leaders who have striven to build a more just society for all, and recognize the struggles and sacrifices they have endured in the fight for equality.

“This month, we celebrate their triumphs and remember that our Founders’ creed – that all are created equal – is not inevitable; that we must work every day to forge a more just, inclusive and perfect union.

She added: “Tremendous progress has been achieved, but the journey is far from over. LGBT Americans face an assault on their rights from the White House and House Republicans, who are gutting HIV prevention and treatment initiatives, dismantling protections for transgender children in public schools and conspiring to render LGBT Americans invisible in the census.

“These hateful, discriminatory attacks dishonor our nation’s most sacred ideals of liberty and make passage of the Equality Act – which would bring the full force of the Civil Rights Act to secure equality for LGBT people – even more urgent. This bill is about respect and pride, not mere tolerance, and House Democrats will not relent until it has been made law.

“The slain San Francisco Supervisor and civil rights leader Harvey Milk once said, ‘Rights are won only by those who make their voices heard.’

“In that spirit, let us raise our voices – in city halls and state capitols; in Congress and the Supreme Court – to fight for the equal dignity that every American is entitled to under our Constitution. And let our voices never falter or fall silent, until we have built a safer, more just and more hopeful future for all.”

DNC Chair Tom Perez added: “Despite their promises, the Trump administration is hell-bent on rolling back progress, starting with Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to end protections for transgender students. Democrats will fight those these efforts to erode the rights of LGBTQ people and continue to push for LGBTQ equality at home and abroad.

“Internationally, equality is also a long way away. According to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, people in 72 countries can still be prosecuted for who they love. That is unacceptable. President Trump must use the full influence of the United States to pressure our neighbors to recognize the rights of LGBTQ people.”

Despite his string of anti-LGBT actions while in office, Trump maintains a hardcore base of gay Republican supporters.

They mainly point to that time he waved an upside-down rainbow flag.

Health / Your Antibacterial Soap May Be Killing You by ATstudios: 3:37pm On Sep 15, 2016
For years, we were made to believe that antibacterial soap is better than plain soap because of its bacteria-killing power. Recent research and reports however suggest that there is insufficient evidence to claim that they provide any of such extra benefit. Rather it has been discovered that it may even be harmful to our health.

Antibacterial Soap: Marketing Gimmicks or Reality?

This is the summary of a recent report published online by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and dated September 2, 2016. The report also maintain that to date, the benefits of using over-the-counter (OTC) antibacterial hand soap have not been scientifically proven.

So what about all these ads we see on TV regularly, claiming 99.9% or more power to kill germs and bacterial? Well, based on current evidence, they only make good advertising gimmicks but certainly do not guarantee enhanced protection or good health.

Why Should We Believe This?

Although the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has not officially made known its position on this issue, similar bodies across the globe such as the Canadian Pediatric Society, the American Medical Association, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and a US Federal Advisory Committee on Nonprescription Drugs all say that antibacterial soaps and washes are no more effective than regular soap and water in fighting infection in everyday use.

in the words of Dr. Joanne Embree, a pediatric infectious disease specialist in Winnipeg and chair of the Canadian Pediatric Society’s Infectious Diseases and Immunization Committee, “hand washing, using plain soap and water, is still the most important way to reduce the spread of germs.”

So What Can Be Bad About Using Antibacterial Soap?

Triclosan and triclocarbon are the two most commonly used antibacterial agents used in manufacturing antibacterial soaps. Numerous studies have found that triclosan promotes the emergence of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. This is fingered to have partly contributed to the rising incidence of Antibiotic resistance globally in the last 5 years. In other words, there is a risk that rather than provide any extra benefit, antibacterial soap could reduce the effectiveness of drugs we rely on to fight infections when we actually get infected.

Triclosan also has environmental effects. It has been found to create dioxin (when exposed to sunlight) and chloroform (when combined with free chlorine in water). Research has shown that triclosan is building up in the environment, and has been found in the umbilical cord blood of infants and in the breast milk of mothers.

Other potentially harmful effects of triclosan include endocrine disruption (affecting the performance of the thyroid hormone), impairment of the immune system, allergies, risk of cancer due to combination with chlorine in tap water to form chloroform which is carcinogenic, and possible effect on muscle contraction.

Three years ago, the United States FDA issued a proposed rule requiring manufacturers of antibacterial products containing those ingredients to prove that these ingredients are safe for daily use over a long period of time. They were also required to prove that these soaps are more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illnesses and the spread of certain infections.

However, since no credible evidence has been presented till date, the FDA is now moving to issue a final rule under which OTC consumer antiseptic wash products such as liquid, foam or gel hand soaps, bar soaps, and body washes containing the majority of these antibacterial active ingredients (including triclosan and triclocarbon) will no longer be able to be marketed.

This according to the FDA report as led some manufacturers to start removing these ingredients from their products, ahead of the its final rule.

Implication for Nigerian Consumers

For us in Nigeria, we need to start asking questions and be vigilant. NAFDAC should be encouraged to keep abreast with emerging global issues and findings in this regard as well as ask manufacturers of similar products in Nigeria to guarantee that their products are safe for us to use.

We as consumers should also probably start doing away with these products especially if their manufacturers do not come out to reassure us (supported by NAFDAC of course) that their products are safe for us to use.

And if you have got some of these antibacterial soaps at home and may not be comfortable suspending their use, please check their ingredients and at least be sure that they do not contain triclosan and triclocarbon. When we have additional information on other antibacterial soap ingredients that may also be harmful, we will update this post or write a new one.

Nairaland / General / Impulsive Buying: 8 Interesting Findings And Their Lessons by ATstudios: 11:54pm On Aug 14, 2016
In this article, we will examine 8 interesting findings on impulsive buying and the various lessons we can learn from them. A number of studies have been carried out in different parts of the world on consumers’ impulsive buying and some interesting findings were made. Pending when such studies are conduct among the Nigerian population, it can be helpful knowing what some of these findings, how they can influence our own buying decisions and the lessons we can learn from them.

Finding 1

Over 90% of people who shop today make occasional impulse buying that they didn’t intend to buy initially while 40% of consumer spending is impulsive buying.

Lesson: Never think you are exempted from impulsive buying. It can happen when you least expected.

Finding 2

Feelings of anger, guilt, or boredom also drive impulse buying behavior. In a scientific telephone survey of 1,000 adult Americans, 75% said they had made an impulse purchase and that those purchases came because they were excited (49%), bored (30%), sad (22%), angry (9%) or intoxicated (9%).

Lesson: You are more likely to buy on impulse when you are excited and bored than when you are sad or angry. Maybe the best time to shop is not when you feeling very excited or bored.

Finding 3

The single most motivating factor which is found to account for 88% of all impulsive buying is the sale price of an item.

Lesson: If the price strikes you as irresistible, very attractive and mouth-watering – take a deep breath; because buying that item may be driven by impulse and not really a need.

Finding 4

Age do influence impulsive buying. Only 56% of adults age 65 and above admit to having spent on impulse compared to those ages 50 – 64 (77%), 30 – 49 (78%) and 18 – 29 (88%). Younger consumers who have income will make more impulsive purchases than other demographics because they have more discretionary money to spend.

Lesson: This suggests that the younger you are and the more money you make, the more likely you will shop on impulse. The older you are, the less likely you will buy things on impulse. Hence your age category should also determine how tight your buying policy should be.

Finding 5

For shoppers who drive to a store instead of taking other means of transportation, there is a 44% greater chance that at least one impulse purchase will be made.

Lesson: This actually makes sense, if carrying an item home from a store is going to be a big stress because you are going to be taking a public transport, you are less likely to buy the item of impulse. So next time you are looking to lower the risk of blowing your hard-earned money on stuff you do not really need when next you go shopping, you may want to consider leaving your car at home.

Finding 6

Outside of food, the most commonly purchased item that is purchased on impulse is clothing. Wine, magazines, books, shoes, and toiletries are also common impulsive purchases.

Lesson: This suggests that we draw up a tighter policy and conditions to guide your purchase of clothing, wine, magazines, books, shoes, toiletries and other items where you are more prone to buy on impulse.

Finding 7

Impulse buying is heavily influenced by the smells, sights, and sounds of a store rather than the needs a person may have.

Lesson: When next you find yourself in very attractive and beautiful shops with great displays and items showcase that stirs up something in you – watch it and keep your purse zip tighter.

Finding 8

When a shopping trip is unplanned, the chances for an unplanned purchase occurring rise by over 20%.

Lesson: Try and avoid unplanned shopping. It is often a ticket to unplanned purchases and impulsive buying.

Phones / 4 Key Points To Consider When Buying A Smartphone by ATstudios: 5:23pm On Jul 20, 2016
I am not a smartphone freak but I have used a couple of smartphones in the last five years from different manufacturers. That list includes BlackBerry, Injoo, Huawei and Infinix. Most of the phones can be termed mid-range averagely-priced smartphones ranging from N80,000 and N25,000.

Two main reasons have been responsible for changing of these phones – phone damages or dissatisfaction with the smartphone’s performance. Consequently, the 4 important points I am highlighting here are connected directly or indirectly to these reasons and based on personal experience. If you therefore consider these points when next you are buying a smartphone, you will cut down on the chances of the need to quickly replace the phone again due to any of the two reasons stated above.

1. The Internal Memory

When I got my first Android smartphone, I made the big mistake of not attaching enough importance to the size of the Internal memory. That phone has an internal memory of 1 GB with 70% of it already containing pre-installed applications which cannot be uninstalled by default. Once I connected to the internet, some of these apps notified me of available updates. I happily decided to update all but to my utter dismay, the internal memory was completely maxed out. Some updates even failed due to lack of space and I could not even install any other additional app of my own.

At the end I had to reverse the updates in order to have space to install just a few of my own apps. This problem persists even after buying a memory card because every app still requires a little space from the internal memory even when it is possible to install that app on the external memory. Sadly, I knew right then that I will not be using the phone for a long time.

I will recommend going for nothing less than 2GB internal memory with at least 75% of it free after all the pre-installed apps. Many low-end smartphones are guilty of this flaw.

2. The Screen

Well, this is another reason many visit smartphone “engineers”. Seems it is inevitable we have to all drop our phone at a point in time. The only thing to probably hope for is that when it does happen eventually, it will drop on our cushion, pillow or bed and not on the office or church marble floor.

I read somewhere that the industry and many smartphone users now prefer those screens that feel and look like glass because they have a clear surface, can be easily cleaned of smears and fingerprints and are quite resistant to scratch. Well! Be careful when that is your only attraction because the more “glassy” they look, the more easily they break.

My oldest smartphone that has survived many falls has a plastic-like screen. It recently got cracked but it was a small crack with no further messy black ink damage. I guess what I am simply trying to say is that if you are used to dropping things, go for those screens that feels less like “glass”. Their “breaking” can be messy and fatal, except if you can get a good screen protector for them.

3. Fixed or Removable Battery

Well, I have heard some experts said that fixed batteries are stronger, more durable and last longer than removable batteries. The problem is when your smartphone suffers a problem (e.g. hanging or freezing) that a simple battery pull would possibly resolved. You have to start thinking of a visit to an approved customer service technician which may or may not be close to you.

This is because if you rush the phone to some of our freelance “smartphone engineers” in a quick-fix move and they open up the phone and something goes wrong, taking it back to a manufacturer approved technician would become an issue as they may charge you some outrageous fee because you have purportedly “voided” the warranty on the phone since you gave it to an unapproved person to open.

4 Availability and Proximity to Manufacturer-approved Technicians

I do not need to give any more detail on this as I touched on it in the last section. You will lose motivation to repair some phones once you realize the risk and the effort it may take to fix even simple issues that may arise with the phones. You can imagine being asked to repair a phone for half of the price you bought it because it is no longer under warranty.

When you buy a smartphone and the manufacturer’s customer service center is hundreds of kilometer away, you will lose days, weeks and maybe months getting the manufacturer to fix any problems the phone may develop and may be forced to turn to our popular “engineers”.

So people, when next you are considering buying a smartphone, you may want to consider these 4 points and weight their pros and cons before making a choice on whether to buy or not. If you have other points based on experience, please feel free to share.
