Somorin#1:I have taken pains to attach a pdf elaboration. please read carefully and pass round perhaps this is the time to correct this anomalies. I am suppose to be working with NAC (National Automotive Council)but, for their bureaucracy I don't think I am cut for inactive exercises. We can do it, pass information out let people know the odds. i bet you don't know a fink about the ATF, Gear Oil, Brake fluid etc. Nigeria is in trouble with these stuffs. Enjoy the pdf write up and pass it round. May be sometime, we may be able to organize a live forum and I will shock everybody. |

THERE ARE MORE TO ENGINE OIL THAN SAE 20W-50 I will like to state that engine oil is what kept the vehicle power house moving. It is also certain that an obsolete oil or an under rated oil will kill the engine very fast and reduce performance to wasteful level. It is actual but unbelievable that 92% of the engine oil that are available in Nigeria are either under rated for the engines or the engine oil are absolutely obsolete/fake and sold at the same rate as imported engine oils that carries good rating and more in litre. Most people always think that the quality of engine oil is determined by viscosity (SAE 40, SAE 20W-50, SAE 90 etc.) No, there are actually three issues to the use of Engine Oil in Nigeria. 1. Our Temperature, 2. The Manufacturers Recommendations and 3. The Viscosity of the Oil to be used. While we cannot do anything to our weather of immediate temperatures, we can at least save the engines by using the recommended rating of oil and the right viscosity of oil. The viscosity makes sure that the engine oil doesn’t thin-out during long engine operations and the rating is a recommendation by the manufacturers that enable the oil to carry out the functions of engine oil perfectly well on their engines. That means different recommendations. On our temperature, for the past four years our ambient temperature is increasing in Nigeria. The so call 20W-50, multigrade oil with operating ambient temperature of maximum 35°C is getting not suitable for Nigeria use. For instance Lagos that normally has a temperature range of 24°C in the mornings, 36°C in the afternoons and between 25°C - 28°C now has 36°C in the mornings, up to 44°C in the afternoon and 28°C in the evenings. The multigrade 20W-50 is for environment of 35°C, Lagos is recording up to up till 45°C and North averages 47°C. The ultimate is to have SAE50 monograde oil viscosity that can cover up to 45°C ambient temperature. The question is do we have monograde of SAE 50? I am not sure. That goes for the Temperature and Viscosity. THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDATION – Every vehicle that leaves the assembly line carries the latest rate in oil potency. That means, the factory usually use the new registered oil ratings for testing the engines and therefore the vehicle during servicing should use the same or oil that is given a higher rating and not the oil rated engine oils. In November 2012, I reiterated that vehicles that came into Nigeria from October 2010 till November 2012 has no engine oil to service them. It was a big comment; the entire conference room was thrown into panicking. But I have spoken the truth. While the World was testing engines with API-SN, Nigeria has only 3 producers with a current rated oil of API-SM, whereas API-SM is an undergrade to API-SN. As at November 2012 we were not current in terms of engine oil in circulation. Of course, that is not the danger. The main issue is that, apart from rated current oil which is API-SM, Nigeria has 95% fake and obsolete engine oil in circulation. There is only one company that is up to date in engine oil production and it also has obsolete rated oil in the market. I know people may likely ask which oil then should we use. I recommend for now in the absence oil with viscosity of SAE 50, we can use the popular SAE20W-50 (It is inferior to our temperature) and in terms of potency to work or international recommendation, API-SM but API-SN is the most current and the best. Other superior engine oil is the ACEA-3 in this rating ACEA-4 is the best and the ILSAC -4. Any oil you find with different rating is fake, obsolete or under-rated. Imagine buying a bullet prove vehicle of over 60,000,000 Naira and only to be maintained with underrated engine oil, obsolete brake fluid and very fake ATF. I leave you to think. I will move to the dangers in Nigeria brake fluid in my next highlight. |
Your case is familiar with the roadsides. they do suggest things out of non tests. I will advice the followings: Find a second opinion by asking for the tests below. Carry out leakage tests on Steering Pump to see if there is any leakage in the steering system. Check if the leakage is also coming from the steering rack (there is a unit called steering rack). If there are no leakages go ahead and use your car. Engine oil is a recovery oil for steering if the steering oil is not available in the immediate environment, It also have no damaging effect on your steeringability except for heavy operation instead of soft steers. It is not ideal to turn steering fully to the end except during pressure tests and most steering will make funny noise if the steering pump belt is weak. However you need a diagnostics fast on your SRS light. It is dangerous to carry SRS for long because it may mean the followings: 1. Bad functioning units like Actuator, sensors, etc. 2. Accident repair without attention to the SRS, 3. A disconnected SRS system. If the problem is from 3., you don't have to worry. It simply shows that your car is no longer using SRS functions. If it is 1. and 2. You need to carry it to a competent person for checks. so that you do not get blasted on top speed by a faulty SRS System. |
I Can't agree with you less. your analysis is perfect. 50calibre: I'm quite surprised, given that they are V6s but them you have to take into account some factors like |
I differ in argument on the fact that Aftermarket Parts are better than OEM Parts. If it is so, why advice people to buy Body Parts from OEM and system unit parts from Aftermarket? OEM is the best choice you can get in terms of any Parts for your automobiles. Why? 1. OEM Parts are insured (the reasons for warranty), 2. OEM parts go through serial random testing on the followings: Operational Tests, Durability Tests and Material Tests. These tests are crucial for vehicle stability and safety of use. For instance Brake Pad must function with Brake Disc Materials, Clutch Disc must function with Clutch Plate and Flywheel Materials. Some Aftermarket part makers do produce for OEM, but they are under very strict supervision by the OEM companies. Some of the OEM buy rights into the Aftermarket producers companies and have access to their production facilities just to control quality. If OEM manufacturers spend money on quality why should the parts be cheap? The best part that one can buy from Aftermarket is the Body Parts, it carries no loss safety implications. Please buy OEM for operational/control and safety Parts and I beg you, don’t risk your life. |
I recently made a statement at the Lagos Chamber Of Commerce Conference (late last year). I speculated that if you buy a vehicle between October 2010 and December 2012, there is no quality rated engine oil to service them. It was a big shock to everyone that listened to me. And it is the truth at that time. Maintenance has many challenges in Nigeria, these are: 1. The quality and standard of Materials Used in Nigeria for vehicle maintenance. 2. The quality and genuineness of parts that is sold in Nigeria, 3. The skill to do the job and do it well 4. The quality and process management on routine maintenance in Nigeria and 5. The financial constraint that will permit quality maintenance in Nigeria. On a bi-weekly release, I will highlight each topic and demand for advices on what we can do to help ourselves if the Government cannot help us. It will also be an eye opener to many forum trackers. First, I want to give insight to only Engine Oil in circulation and I will conclude on Material challenges next two weeks. I will like to state that engine oil is what kept the vehicle power house moving. It is also certain that an obsolete oil or an under rated oil will kill the engine very fast and reduce performance to wasteful level. It is actual but unbelievable that 92% of the engine oil that are available in Nigeria are either under rated for the engines or the engine oil are absolutely obsolete and sold at the same rate as imported engine oils. The question is, why are the big brand oil makers are not producing the oil rate as demanded by the vehicle manufacturers? Why is the umbrella union of these oil producers allowing the production of under rated? Why is Nigeria Standard Organization not raiding the market to get rid of obsolete rated oil? Why do we have just about 8% of the rightly rated oil coming from just 3 outlets? What should we do to reverse this trend? These people are killing the cars! like I use to analyze, it amounts to you accepting that a medical doctor should administer an expired drug on your child. What can we do? |

P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit Malfunction P1656 - Oil control valve circuit malfunction P1663 - Oil control valve/variable valve timing RH bank malfunction These codes related to hard starting...but may not necessarily be component malfunction. it reads "Circuit Malfunction" and may just be a wiring problem. The last code has nothing to do with hard starting, but can impact on your fuel consumption greatly. The information you gave is scanty, i will need the following information: At what time of the day do you have the hardstarting? If it started did the engine run smoothly? Have you ever done a compression test on the car before? When last did you do a service? (I mean quality service? Quality service translate into four things 1. Genuine Materials, Skill personnel, Factory Procedures and Good Machines). I am afraid some of these vehicles are sensitive to conditions of usage and maintenance. Let me know your answers to the questions. |
I have read many opinion on Hybrid particularly coming from Nigerians. The fact of the matter is: The technology is new in the World (10 years at most 2002 - 2013). There are many dangers involved - HV operating power is about 300volts (it can electrocute). Many technicians do not know the technology yet, including the so called major dealers. It is very expensive to maintain and needs periodical re-programing. The popular code readers will not work on HV technology. (It can only help to read damage codes). The machine for working on these vehicles must be the ones that can communicate effectively and activate the vehicle. The maintenance of the Hybrid is different or extended. Please if you don't have enough to spend on these cars, Do Not Buy Them - If you have problems on them get intouch. I will be willing to help on the Hybrids particularly Toyota Hybrids if contacted (autoclinicservices@gmail.com) And to receive my information serials on vehicle maintenance (AutoQuint Serials - more than 3000 recipients)also send a subscribe note to autoclinicservices@gmail.com. We entertain questions on your vehicles. |
