Science/Technology / Chemistry Questions by awosanyaolaide(m): 3:09pm On Apr 22, 2023
Question 1.
State Gay Lussac's Law of Combining Volume

Answer 1:
Gay Lussac's Law of Combining Volume states that when gases react, they do so in volumes which are simple ratio to one another and to the volumes of the products, if gaseous, provided that the temperature and the pressure remain constant.

Question 2.
At 17 degree Celsius, a sample of hydrogen gas occupies 125cm3. What will the volume be at 100 degree Celsius, if the pressure remains constant?

Answer 2.
See 1st attached image

Question 3.
A certain amount of gas occupies 5.0dm3 at 2atm and 10 degree Celsius. Calculate the number of moles present. (R= 0.082atmdm3/kmol)

Answer 3 : See 2nd image below.

Question 4.
State Collision Theory and mention four factors that affect rate of reaction

Answer 4 :
Collision Theory assumes that there must be collisions between reactant particles for a chemical reaction to occur.

Factors that affect rate of reaction include:
- Nature of Reactants
- Concentration/pressure (for gases) of reactants
- Surface area of reactants
- Presence of Light
- Presence of Catalyst

Science/Technology / Esterification by awosanyaolaide(m): 5:02pm On Jul 28, 2022
QUESTION

Define Esterification with a relevant example.

ANSWER
Esterification is the process of reversible reaction between alkanol and alkanoic acid in the presence of concentrated Hydrogen tetraoxosulphate (VI) to produce alkylalkanoate (ester) and water.
E.g. Reaction between
ethanol and ethanoic acid forming ethylethanoate(ester) and water. See attached image.

Science/Technology / Solubility, Isotopes, Ions by awosanyaolaide(m): 4:43pm On Jul 28, 2022
QUESTION:

Define each of the following terms:
i. Solubility
ii. Saturated solutions
iii. Ions
iv. Isotopes

ANSWER:

i. Solubility
The Solubility of a solute in a solvent at a particular temperature is the maximum amount of the solute in grams or moles that will saturate 1dm3 of the solvent at that temperature.

ii. Saturated Solution
Saturated solution of a solute at a partivular temperature is one which contains as much solute as it can dissolve at that temperature in the presence of undissolved solute particles.

iii. Ion
This is any atom or group of atoms which possess an electric charge. The types of ion include:

Cation
Positively charged element e.g Na+, K+,
Anion
Negatively charged elements e.g Cl-, Br-

iv. Isotopes
These are atoms of an element that possess the same Atomic Number (Proton Number) but different Mass Number (Atomic Mass). Note that difference in Mass Number is due to differences in Neutron number.
Elements which undergo isotopy are: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon, Chlorine.

Note: Kindly reach out on any questions

Esterification (Ester-forming process)

This involves the reaction between Alkanoic acid and Alkanol to form Alkanoate (Ester) and Water only. E.g

Ethanoic Acid + Methanol => Methylethanoate (Ester) + Water

CH3COOH + CH3OH => CH3COOCH3 + H20

Neutralization Reaction

This is the reaction between Acid and Base (alkali) to form Salt and Water only.

Acid + Base => Salt + Water

HCl + NaOH => NaCl + H2O

Hydrochloric acid + Sodium hydroxide => Sodiumchloride (Salt) + Water only.

Note : The type (strong or weak) of acid and base will determine the salt formed.

Do you remember?

Redox reaction entails both Reduction and Oxidation reactions. Elements undergoing Reduction are called Oxidizing Agents while those undergoing Oxidation are Reducing agents.

In balancing redox reaction, you must balance both atomically and ionically.
Atomically means number of atoms on the reactant side must equate those on product side.
Ionically means the number of electrons on the charged species must be equal on both sides.

Hydrocarbon

Hydrocarbons are compounds of Hydrogen and Carbon.

Saturated hydrocarbon is explained through Alkane (general formula CnH2n+2) when n=1, the compound is methane (CH4). The bond between two carbon atoms in alkane is single bond (C-C). Read up on Alkane to under saturated hydrocarbon.

Unsaturated Hydrocarbon is explained through Alkene (general formula CnH2n) and Alkyne (general formula CnH2n-2).
Compared with alkanes, alkenes and alkyne lost 2 and 4 hydrogen atoms respectively. Alkenes then have atleast one double (C=C) while alkynes have atleast one triple bond.

In addition to Combustion reaction, Saturated Hydrocarbon undergoes substitution reaction while Unsaturated Hydrocarbon undergoes addition reaction (to complement the lost hydrogen atoms).

More to come.
