BY WOLE BALOGUN, ADO EKITI EKITI State governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has called on well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on President Mohammadu Buhari to stop his needless foreign trips, describing the president’s trip to the United States of America on Wednesday for the 4th Nuclear Security Summit, while Nigerians are suffering at home as, “joke of the year.” The governor said, “it remains a mystery what President Buhari that met power generation at 6,000MW and could not manage it such that power generation crumbled to 0MW yesterday, will contribute to the Nuclear Energy Summit in America.” Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said, “it is shameful that while President Buhari was far away in the United States of America, attending a summit that does not have any bearing on Nigeria and its people, an unprecedented happened – power generation stopped completely for over three hours!” He said the sufferings of Nigerians deserved the attention of the president instead of junketing around the world, wasting the country’s scarce foreign exchange. The governor alleged that over $50 million must have been spent on the president’s frequent foreign trips, adding that Nigerians should ask President Buhari whether his trip to the United States of America to attend Nuclear Energy Summit will bring the lingering fuel scarcity being experienced in the country to an end. http://scangist.com/politics/buhari-must-stop-needless-foreign-trips-cos-nigerians-are-suffering-fayose-words-of-advice-to-buhari/ |
Google on Wednesday said it is testing ways to let people use digital wallets without having to even take smartphones out of their pockets. The Internet colossus is dabbling with ways to make its Android Pay system for smartphones hands-free, with verification by facial recognition, Google product manager Pali Bhat said in a blog post. “Imagine if you could rush through a drive-thru without reaching for your wallet, or pick up a hot dog at the ballpark without fumbling to pass coins or your credit card to the cashier,” Bhat said. “This prompted us to build a pilot app called Hands Free that we’re now in the early stages of testing.” Hands Free became available for smartphones powered by Apple or Android software and was being rolled out at a small number of Silicon Valley area eateries, including McDonald’s and Papa John’s, according to Google. The digital wallet uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections alone with location sensing capabilities in smartphones to detect when someone is near a store enabled with Hands Free payment technology. “When you’re ready to pay, you can simply tell the cashier, ‘I’ll pay with Google,’” Bhat said. “The cashier will ask for your initials and use the picture you added to your Hands Free profile to confirm your identity.” At some locations, Google is experimented with using cameras in stores to recognize people with Hands Free digital wallets so they could pay without even pausing. Since Android pay was launched in September, an average of 1.5 million accounts have been registered monthly in the United States and the number of locations accepting it has topped two million, according to Google. “We’re busy working to bring the convenience of Android Pay to more countries and a growing list of stores and apps,” Bhat said. Google’s mobile wallet competes with Apple Pay and others as people’s reliance on smartphones expands to using handsets to make payments in real-world shops. http://scangist.com/technology/digital-wallet-to-be-unveiled-soon-by-google/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, said he could not single-handedly fight-corruption, pointing out that it is a collective responsibility of Nigerians. Speaking at the 25th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, the President said he does not have the magic wand to effect the change he is championing alone. “As you all know, our administration came to power on the promise of change. Changing our society from the path of corruption in high and low places is a task that we all must be committed to. It is not a magic wand that a single leader alone can use. We all have to believe in it and we have to work for it and inculcating the virtues of honour integrity and discipline are essentially the duty of the family and educational institutions,” the president said. “Nigeria still has hope and promise because our youths -vibrant, energetic and creative citizens – are the greatest resource and pillar of this country. “Today may be rough and tough but tomorrow will be better. I have hope because I see in our youths inventors, problem solvers and leaders that will one day make Nigeria greater than my government will make it,” the President, who was represented by the Director of Science and Technology in the Federal Ministry of Education, Sandy Gandy Chega, said. http://scangist.com/politics/i-dont-have-the-strength-to-fight-corruption-alone-buhari/ |
