Research found grown men favour their mother's culinary skills because they rustle up more traditional, hearty dishes than their spouses. The study also found mothers rarely serve up ready meals, have a wider repertoire of meals and always cook something they know he likes. Wives and girlfriends, on the other hand, are likely to dish up pre-prepared meals from the freezer or microwavable meals. The poll by entertainment channel, Food Network UK, also found one in four men often sneak back to mum's for a spot of dinner without their wife or girlfriend knowing. Spokesman Nick Thorogood said: ''It's quite endearing men prefer their mothers cooking. ''As adults, men still seek the comfort and tradition of the cooking they have grown up with so turn to their mums for what they perceive as a 'proper meal'. ''A lot of the best recipes Brits have are likely to have been handed down to them from their mums and Mother's Day is the perfect time for people to put those cooking tips to good use and surprise their mum with a home-cooked meal. ''Saying that, it's gracious to appreciate any food - regardless who has cooked it for you.'' The study also found more than one in ten blokes think their wife feels under pressure to live up to her mother-in-law's cooking skills. And a brave 47 per cent of men even have the audacity to complain to their spouse if her food isn't up to scratch - although 20 per cent of those do it in a 'jokey' way so not to hurt her feelings. But one in ten claim they moan all the time if dinner is below par. The poll also found that a fussy one in ten blokes have turned his nose up at his partners cooking and refused to eat it. But a very brave 13 per cent of the 2000 men polled have told their nearest and dearest that she should take cooking advice from his mum to brush up on her skills. Not surprisingly this caused 'upset' in two thirds of relationships. A third of men also said their trouble and strife would go mad if she knew he secretly went back to his mother's house for his evening meal some nights. In spite of this, 22 per cent say after a stressful day at work they are often tempted to slope back to his parents' house to get some grub rather than have his wife cook for him. Mothers like adding fuel to the fire with one in twenty often asking their son if he's eating properly. And sixteen per cent of men said their mum often makes digs to his wife or girlfriend about him losing weight. But the younger generations are happy to stick the boot in too - with 31 per cent of women regularly slagging off their mother-in-laws cooking. The poll found that one in twenty men think there is intense rivalry between his mother and his partner in the cooking department and one in five said there was 'a bit' of competition between the two. A whopping three quarters of men said the rivalry had caused rows and 36 per cent thought that their wife or girlfriend was threatened by his mother's culinary knowledge. But it's not just competition between his mum and wife that causes issues - 24 per cent reckon there has been a confrontation between his own mother and his mother-in-law. One in ten said there is conflict between the two mothers on most family occasions. Nick Thorogood added: ''It would seem there is rivalry in many homes over who cooks the best food" ''Whilst it's nice that everyone is trying to please the men in their life, it seems that this year the women need to put their feet up and the men should do the cooking.'' http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/sex/9147499/Men-prefer-their-mothers-cooking-to-their-wifes-survey-shows.html |
