Star Congolese rumba singer Koffi Olomide, who was expelled from Kenya after allegedly kicking one of his dancers, was freed on bail Saturday in the Democratic Republic of Congo, his lawyer said.

The entertainer, who has recorded 26 albums, was thrown out of Kenya on July 23 where he was due to stage a concert after being filmed on arrival in Nairobi the day before, kicking out and lunging at one of his dancers.

"Prosecutors granted bail to Koffi Olomide because he does not present a flight risk," said Benoit Tayeye, one of his lawyers. "The defence has shown that the singer has a known residence, is a famous music star and his principal interests are here in DRC."

Authorities from the prosecutor's office confirmed Olomide's release from a Kinshasa jail, adding that the criminal case would not be dropped. The singer was charged Tuesday with assault and battery.

Neither the defence team nor the prosecution gave details about the bail fee.

Video footage of the incident went viral. A lawyer for Olomide said previously the singer was in fact trying to step in to resolve a dispute between his dancers and that his foot had slipped. - DAILY MONITOR

He says “After the success of ‘30 Days In Atlanta’ there were a lot of calls for more so we decided to do a spinoff to showcase further adventures of Akpos”. ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ which bridges the gap between Nollywood, Gollywood, Hollywood and the Jamaican movie industry will be showcasing AY again as the no-holds- barred Akpos, alongside the award-winning Funke Akindele, who plays Bola in the high voltage potpourri of love, adventure, crime and lots of comedy.”[/b]

Congolese Singer Koffi Olomide has been jailed for a year for assaulting a female dancer in Kenya, reports indicate.

The Rhumba maestro was arrested on Tuesday at his home in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It was reported that he was taken to court shortly after and charged with the crime. He was found guilty and sentenced to a year in jail.

Olomide denied assaulting one of his dancers identified as Pamela. His lawyer George Wajackoyah also accused police of manhandling the musician.

The singer apologised in a Facebook post on Monday, terming the incident a "moment of madness".

He has faced widespread condemnation and outrage since the video of the incident at JKIA was shared on social media.

Kenyans on Twitter called for his immediate arrest and deportation after the assault.

Olomide was deported to Kinshasa, DRC, by Kenya Airways after spending a night in police custody last week.

The singer's show at Zambia's Agricultural And Commercial Society, where he was scheduled to perform at this year's 90th Show, was cancelled as a result.
