•Let us concentrate on pressing national Issues – Usman Solomon. •No individual or organization is stronger than the generality of Great Ife Students – Okediji Simon •I have never in my lifetime experienced a speech so insightful – Participant. Seasoned broadcaster, public affairs analyst, journalist, and former Splash FM employee, Edmund Obilo has in the light of the present climate surrounding Nigerian national integration, remarked the country has so far been lucky to not have assumed the status of a failed state. He stated this at Oduduwa Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, during the June 12 political symposium put together by the office of Public Relations Officer of Obafemi Awolowo University Student Union, in commemoration of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which is predominantly acclaimed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola who had contested under the platform of Socialcial Democratic Party (SDP). The event, which also featured an Inter-Hall debate competition entitled ‘June 12 commemoration, Crucial or Trivial’ , had been expected to have guests in the persons of Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly Najeem Salaam, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Lasun Yusuf, Former OAU Student Union President, Paul Alaje , Lecturer, Department of Political Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, Mr. Usman Solomon Ayegba, and Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Mudashiru Obasa in attendance, only witnessed paper delivery by Edmund Obilo and the representative of Usman Solomon, Mr. Harrison amidst low turnout of audience which was hinged upon academic lectures, resultant of non-declaration of June 12, by the Federal Government of Nigeria, as Public Holiday. In his keynote address titled “The Past, Present and Future of Democracy”, Mr. Edmund tasked students to embrace intellectualism and explore intellectual works, as readers are leaders. He said while studying Electrical Electronics, he read books centred on law and politics, before going on to study International Relations, mentioning that he is in fact presently a student of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, with plans to study Political Economy of Underdeveloped Countries abroad. “I am a sad Nigerian but I am hopeful. I believe I am a member of a generation that can build a new hope for Africa, I believe I am on a mission, I don’t know about you”. Edmund Obilo shared an opinion which is in alignment with that of those who see Nigeria as sitting on a keg of gun powder, finding it mysterious that the country has so far survived what can be described as profound terminal disease. ”Considering the many cases of unresolved murder, mass killings on the part of government, political oppression and corruption, I have come to the conclusion that Nigeria is lucky to not have assumed the status of a failed state. Nigeria is one country that produces leaders and followers with weapons of destabilization; Nigeria has leaders and followers firing bullets and missiles of deceit at the heart of the country, yet the country has refused to die but I have a fear, Nigeria might be taking its luck too far. With the way we are going, we may wake up on morning and find that Nigeria has sunk with its citizens scattered in different directions”. He explained Nigerians may continue to debate while the military elements who truncated democracy continue to dictate it, in the absence of necessary actions. Adding that what June 12 symbolizes in essence was the effort of Nigerians in demand for democracy order than being all about M.K.O Abiola who equally had his own flaws, detailing alleged conspiracies, which includes funding of military coups. “It was a muslim-muslim ticket but he (Moshood Abiola) was loved by the Nigerian people in entirety. They came out to cast votes across every divide”. He congratulated Nigerian students on standing firm in the face of oppression, calling on Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions to reinstate students rusticated for expressing their preferences. “These students have the right to negotiate their own future. You find them (rusticated students) in the Universities of Lagos, Ibadan, Benin and Obafemi Awolowo University. The repositioning of our educational standard cannot be achieved in a brutal environment where students are scared to expressing themselves. Delivering his address, Lecturer, Political Science Department, OAU, Usman Solomon, represented by Mr. Harrison, in a manner of one does not exactly favour the commiseration of June 12, rolled-out before the audience, two variant schools of thought on the subject. He said he was reluctant to accept the invitation, at first, for some reasons, noting that June 12 had become sensitive and emotional national and global discussion. “The spectre of June 12 continues to hunt and hurt Nigerians. Some people believe that June 12 1993 election was the freest election and the commemoration is done in national interest. Others believe that June 12 is dead and should be consigned to the trash can of history where it belongs thus commemorating this annually or any event for that matter is not only a waste of time but an attempt to take the country backward” Suggesting that the importance of June 12 were missed, he cited lack of strengthened conduct of free and fair elections, independence of the electoral commission as examples. He closed with a unequivocal emphasis “There is no alternative democracy”. While fielding questions, ATTENCAO asked the Public Relations Officer, Okediji Simon, whether or not the absence of politician invitees was influenced by the set of students who were critical of their invitation and had planned to greet their presence with massive protests, he denied such. “Thanks for the question, the absence of some of our invitees wasn’t influenced by any individual or group of people. No individual or organization is stronger than the generality of Great Ife Students. Their absence was due to personal reasons also known to the leadership of the Union”. Asked if his office had similar programs as the June 12 Political Symposium in stock, he responded “In November, We are going to organise a National Conference of All Nigerian Students where we will be hosting all Universities in the South-West” http://attencao..co.ke/2017/06/nigeria-is-lucky-to-not-have-assumed.html?m=1 |
The Central Executive Council, CEC, Obafemi Awolowo University, on Tuesday reviewed its decision to postpone a much awaited union congress to the 13th of June, and resolved to instead hold it on Thursday, 8th of June. The congress was initially scheduled for the 7th of June before it was abruptly postponed, invoking criticism among numerous amounts of students, who questioned the rationale behind what they considered not only as rash, but in equal measure suspicious move by the CEC who may have been motivated by political permutations rather than the mandate to act in the best interest of the union members who it represented. As the first congress presided over by a union president since members of the Dr-Ibk led administration were sworn into office, as well as the reinstatement of the Obafemi Awolowo University Student Union, it was evidently viewed as symbolic, thoroughly discussed and prepared for. The congress is expected as a platform to assess how the newly elected leaders have so far executed campaign promises on the back of which they rode into various offices, air opinion, identify emerging issues bothering on welfare, accommodation, transportation, security, religious crisis and holistically proffer solutions to these arising matters in the spirit of prevailing democratic tradition. It was gathered that the president failed to carry other members of the executive along, before he postponed the congress as constitutionally dictated, thereby violating Article 2 Subsection 4 of the constitution: “Congress shall take decisions on matters which in the opinion of the Central Executive Council or the SRC are beyond their powers”. The PRO, Okediji Simon (Zuma), whose signature did not feature on the press release conveying information of the postponement, along with some other members of the executive, were allegedly sidelined in the scheme of things, sparking insinuations of foul play on the part of the president. St Totteringham's Day This is the name given by Arsenal fans to the point in the season at which it is no longer mathematically possible for Tottenham to finish ahead of Arsenal. Spurs were finally able to echo "North London belongs to us" for the first time in 22 years as they bid the jinx farewell. It came as no surprise having won their last nine premier league matches emphatically, but more interestingly, it can be mathematically confirmed as early as matchday 34, thanks to Dele Ali, Harry Kane and Arsenal's lifeless display at a London Derby many presumed they would have approached earnestly. Mauricio Pochettino consistently plays down the significance of finishing above Gunners. "We have bigger things to worry about" but his celebration after Ali's goal betrays his words. It's Tottenham's most successful season ever, with 78 unprecedented points and 12 more to fight for. Arsenal may however end up the happier side, depending on how much they can make from open top four race and May 27 FA Cup final against Chelsea. Title, Top 4 Race. There is a reason why Chelsea fans and rival supporters (including spurs) seem to see Blues with the crown already: Chelsea look like Champions. Ronald Koeman gave a sufficient picture after Chelsea ensured his side would not complete Nine wins on a bounce at Goodison park. "We did a good job until Pedro put us behind but Chelsea know how to win games even when they are not playing at their highest level. They have quality and once they are ahead, they know how to kill the game. Chelsea on paper, have their run-in easier compared to Spurs who have to travel to West Ham (London Derby) and Old Trafford, but you cannot take anything for granted. It remains uncertain what Manchester United's hopes of competing among top-tier European http://attencao..com.ng/2017/05/weekend-in-football-perspective.html?m=1 |
*El Clasico* In the build up, we related the encounter largely to how much effect it would have on whoever wins Spanish Championship. But, Lionel Messi came, ran tooth-gnashing terror, championed in totality and completely stole this one away. I mean, when you are 29 and you're are mentioned in the same breath as the the greatest characters in football history, scored 500 times for a single football club, scored the most cumulative goals in El Cassico, scored and made the most goals and assists, respectively, in La Liga History, whilst playing the best brand of football alongside of that, I can only be proud you came during my time. *Calabar Tragedy* The regrettable loss of lives of football fans, which majority are believed to be Manchester United faithful, in Calabar, South-South Nigeria, has received quite a sizable level of attention, nationwide and across the globe alike. President Mohammadu Buhari and other dignitaries, including former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, Senate Leader, Bukola Saraki and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, commiserated with Delta State government and its people. I sense political stunt, but they did it anyway. A statement credited to the stated football club's twitter handle reads: "Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday.” British High commission in Nigeria stated: “Our deepest sympathy for the loss of lives in Calabar during a Europa League football match between Manchester United and Anderlecht.” Thirty fans were initially reported to have been killed while watching an Europa League match between Manchester United and Anderlecht last Thursday, when an high tension cable fell on the crowd at a viewing center. On the contrary, ten people, as a matter of fact, were killed in the sad occurrence, with over Eighteen casualties currently receiving treatments, as against widespread claims of thirty deaths. However, 30 or 10, the significance of a single life cannot be overestimated. While I have nothing but deep and sincere sympathy for friends and families of the deceased, I however strongly believe, that, in all of this, the most important lesson there is to take away is ensuring that not one more life is lost to a similarly embarrassing occurrence while led by their passion. Beyond what the government can do, individuals must have penchant towards taking meticulous cognizance of potential threats to their existence. I don't know how you explain watching football at viewing centers that are not only constructed with metal sheets but have high tension cables running over them. You may be right if you are of the view that these things have slim chances of happening, but when one happens, it leaves behind wounds that may never be healed in a life time. *English FA Cup* Arsenal earned a third FA cup final in four years after dumping Pep Guardiola's Click on the link to finish this up: http://attencao..com.ng/2017/04/weekend-in-football-perspective.html?m=1 |
In fairness, Pogba does not appear to be the one to carry his team's responsibilities consistently on big occasions, neither has he proved that to be wrong - conspicuously underlined by the fact that he was never considered as the overall best player in any of his seasons at the Seria A by the award determiners- a pointer to the opinion that he is undeserving of redefining football's transfer record, at least not yet. No hates but this deal is a spit on the Matuidis of this world, very gross. Ayoola Omole [Haywire] |
Paul Pogba is one of the most coveted midfielders all over europe in the last couple of years, during the period which he has had his name consistently pinned to speculation boards every transfer window. However he has never been so strongly linked to a move away from Turin, where he arrived in the thrash bag from Manchester United 4 years ago, to the extent he is this summer. The youngster previously carried a mouthwatering price tag in the region of £80 million however juventus raise their asking price to around a never-of-its-kind £93.2, which his former team, Manchester United have coughed up (a little moral - if you dont have an eye to sight potentiality imbedded in things, you might end up breaking the bank for a 'worthless' item you left to deteriorate). Real Madrid, renowned serial spenders who were also a leading party in the chase for the Frenchman, in fact for the longer period, informed pogba's agent they lack the finances match the offer tabled by the red devils, although Pogba favoured a move to unite with countryman, Zidane rather than elsewhere. He is undeniably a rare talent, box-to-box midfielder who can do almost anything; score screamers, display unbelievable skills and breathtaking first touch. But does pogba wield Toni Kroos's ability to dictate the match's gravity? A sublime passer of the ball, defensively strong and can equally score from range , he's a valuable asset on the attack given his assists. Made UEFA's top 10 players list for 2016. He provided the most assists at 2014 world cup only to end up in Madrid for £20m(although Bayern practically struck a poor deal, and no thanks to his expiration-bound contract). Can Pogba shield the back four the way Busquets does? No. Is he as monstrous as Yaya Toure in the terms of explosive energy? No. This is not to outrightly imply the listed players are better, one only try to figure out one singular result-influencing factor which may only be offered by none other than Pogba. Koke is similarly an all-action midfielder, and i dare say is more versatile when compared Pogba. You hardly find a midfielder who combines immense defensive contributions with technique (to which his overlays attest) and the capability to play on both flanks comfortably, but unfortunately we may have a system which rewards flair over of hardwork and tactical discipline. Kevin De Bruyne's only visible weakness is his defensive impotence. Anyone who observed Paul Scholes's diagonals would come to appreciate how those visionary, thoughtful passes change the tempo of proceedings in no time and how valuable KDB is to Manchester City. If there is anything like calculative football, then that's his brand. He recorded 7 goals and 9 assists from 22 matches, 3 of which he didnt start or finish with Manchester City last campaign while Pogba scored 8 goals and made 8 assists from over 30 appearances for the Old Ladies, so what's all the fuss about ? Take a look at the most expensive players in the world up until the craziest transfer window in football, you see individuals who were the very air their teams breathed prior the move, evident in the fact that Ronaldo and Bale won England player award of the year twice, the former had his consecutively. Suarez was snatched from Anfield after racking up 30 goals to outclass his peers on the goals chart. A lot of people believe he, added to his pfa award, would have had an Epl winners' medal under his belt had he link up with an elite manager and number of teammates. It is a common knowledge that a 'Neymarless' Brazil only ventured hopelessly vulnerable, assuming such status at such a tender age warranted his fee. See the concluding Paragraph below. |

A lot of people believe he, added to his pfa award, would have had an Epl winners' medal under his belt had he link up with an elite manager and a number of teammates. It is a common knowledge that a 'Neymarless' Brazil only ventured hopelessly vulnerable, assuming such status at such a tender age warranted his fee. In fairness, Pogba does not seem to be the one to carry his team's responsibilities consistently on big occasions, neither has he proved that to be wrong. I like Pogba as a player but the fact that he was never considered as the overall best player in any of the seasons at the Seria A by award determiners iPaul Pogba is one of the most coveted midfielders all over europe in the last couple of years, during the period which he has had his name consistently pinned to speculation boards every transfer window. The final group matches of the UCL goes down shortly. So far, one English has been eliminated and one has progressed to the next round of the competition atop of their group. Of course, both teams are from Manchester, the former - United, while City are the later. It's the turn of London teams to credibly represent English soccer especially at a time when the League is at the risk of losing one of its slots in the UCL and have the number of teams representing it to 3 in 2016. The London have decisive matches to execute this evening, in the interest of EPL. It would be unacceptable, should both teams be sent parking. We take a look at the possibility of each team progressing. ARSENAL The gunners stand 3rd with 6 points and Olympiacos, who they have to usurp, to qualify for the next round are 2nd with 9 points. Bayern Munich have already gone through as table leaders. To qualify, winning at Athens would not be enough for Arsenal, they need to win with the margin of at least two goals - given that they go head-to-head with Olympicos who have defeated them at Emirates earlier. Prediction - Arsenal will not go through. I do not see them stopping Olympiacos from scoring. CHELSEA Chelsea and Porto are 1st and 2nd respectively on the log, with 10 points each. Dynamo are 3rd with 9 points. This is one of the most complicated situations in the competition, with multiple scenarios capable of emerging. Any of the top 3 teams are capable of finishing first and any can end up in Europa League. To qualify, Chelsea must win (finish 1st) or play-out a draw (finish 2nd). Losing to Porto can only help, if Dynamo lose to Maccabi (which is very unlikely). Prediction : Chelsea will beat Porto to finish leaders. |
