INTRODUCTION
The use of jerry cans to buy and store fuel (petrol, diesel and Kerosene) is a common practice in Nigeria. This becomes necessary when we want to transfer petrol especially into our Generators or Cars, when the petrol has been used up outside the regular fuel filling stations. This practice has even become aggravated owing to the epileptic electricity supply in Nigeria.
Virtually almost every family in Nigeria now owns a Generator. If they cannot afford the “big ones” they settle for the popular “ I better pass my neighbour” small tiger generator. So on daily basis people besiege fuel filling station with all sizes of plastic Jerry Cans to refill generators.
It has been observed that each time one transfer petrol from Jerry Cans to Generators, there is usually some spillage. This is a huge cost to the people buying petrol already at exorbitant prices. A number of avoidable fire incidences, occurr when people want to transfer fuel from Jerry Cans to Generators and when the fuel torches the plug it sparks fire outbreak.
It is pitiable that a lot of Nigerians have lost their lives and millions of properties destroyed due to generator related fire outbreak.
The perennial fuel scarcity witnessed in Nigeria in recent times has also necessitated motorist to buy and store fuel in Jerry Cans. When transferring such fuel to the cars, they use hose (pipe) . And to activate the flow. They insert the pipe into the Jerry Can and draw with their mouth. This is unhygienic and dangerous. A lot of people h swallow fuel in the process. At times they transfer fuel directly through some improvised 'funnel' into the car.
