Foreign Affairs › USA POLITICS: Biden Executive Order Says Schools Should Include Transgender Athl by Babalolago(op): 10:36pm On Jan 21, 2021
amid pandemic
Fox News medical Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marty Makary weighs in on ‘America’s Newsroom.’ Dr. Marty Makary weighs in.

President Biden, in an executive order aimed at "preventing and combating discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation," is calling on schools across the country to allow transgender athletes to participate in the sport of their gender identity.

"Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports," reads the new order, released on the first day of his presidency.

The order is a strong signal that the Justice Department is going to enforce it via Title IX -- and schools that don’t comply risk losing funding.

The order also calls for equal treatment "regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation" in the workplace and in health care settings. "All persons should receive equal treatment under the law, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation," the order states.

The order points to Supreme court case Bostock v. Clayton County (2020) where the court held Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibiting discrimination "because of . . . sex" includes discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

Biden, in the order, tied in intersectional discrimination, writing that discrimination on the bases of gender identity and sexual orientation is often coupled with discrimination based on race or disability.

Heads of agencies are ordered to reassess their policies dealing with Title VII or any statute prohibiting sex discrimination.

Transgender athletes in schools was a hot topic of debate last year, when 17 states introduced bills to restrict athletes’ participation to sports of their gender assigned at birth. Only one became law-- in Idaho. The Trump administration supported the ban, but a federal judge temporarily blocked its implementation after a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The Trump administration also intervened in Connecticut, when the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) found a law allowing transgender high school girls to compete on girls’ sports teams violated the Title IX right of girls assigned female at birth. The DOE threatened the Connecticut schools with pulling funding or facing action from the DOJ, but neither happened. The administration had jumped in to support a case of several cisgender girls seeking to block the state policy. The plaintiffs argued transgender female runners had an unfair physical advantage.
The case has yet to be decided.

Currently, 14 states and the District of Columbia have policies similar to Connecticut’s, according to Transathlete.com. Fourteen others allow transgender participation with certain conditions, such as hormone treatments or other proof the athlete is transitioning, according to the organization.

Last year, a group of Republican senators introduced a bill that would revoke federal funding of schools that allowed transgender girls to compete in women's sports, but it didn't go very far. Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., who co-sponsored the bill, highlighted a dispute in Connecticut where two competitors, who were born male but identified as female, won 15 girls state championships.

Erin Buzuvis, a professor at the Western New England School of Law who specializes in gender and discrimination in education and athletics, told The Associated Press the Connecticut case could "evaporate" if the new administration doesn’t want to press it.

The Idaho situation is different because it is a state law that is being challenged under the equal protection doctrine," Buzuvis said. "That could set some sort of national standard about what kind of policies states are allowed to have or prohibited to have. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the case would say, ‘Here is the one policy that all states must have.’"
Foreign Affairs › ABORTION: Fauci Says Biden Reversing Trump Rule Barring Taxpayer Dollars To Over by Babalolago(op): 10:25pm On Jan 21, 2021
Top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci announced Thursday that President Biden will roll back a Trump-era policy that banned taxpayers' dollars from going to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information.

Fauci, the newly appointed chief medical adviser to Biden, said the move was in line with the new administration's undertaking to support and strengthen health care systems around the world.

"It will be our policy to support women’s and girls’ sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights in the United States, as well as globally," Fauci said at the World Health Organization (WHO) executive board meeting on Thursday.

"To that end, President Biden will be revoking the Mexico City policy in the coming days, as part of his broader commitment to protect women’s health and advance gender equality at home and around the world."
Fauci's appearance at the WHO meeting signaled the commitment of the U.S. to remain a part of WHO, despite former President Donald Trump's efforts to sever the relationship and withdraw from the organization.

The Mexico City policy under Trump applied broadly to organizations receiving U.S. global health assistance and cut off about $8.8 billion to groups working on HIV/AIDS, malaria, maternal and child health, reproductive issues and global health.

For decades Republicans have implemented the ban and Democrats have rescinded it. Biden's decision mimics that of former President Barack Obama, who lifted the ban when he took office in 2009.

Christianity Etc › Religion:taliban Chief Orders Officials To Cut Back To One Wife To Save Money by Babalolago(op): 2:18pm On Jan 15, 2021
Taliban Chief Orders Officials to Cut Back to One Wife to Save Money

Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada, chief of the Afghan Taliban, has instructed his top officials to “avoid second, third, and fourth marriage if there is no need.” Constant requests from Taliban officials for extra money to pay for multiple wives reportedly prompted the order.

Voice of America News (VOA) obtained Akhundzada’s order, written in the Pashtun language, from two Taliban officials. They said they were instructed to share the order with their subordinates.

“Families of several officials of the Islamic Emirate do not have a lot of money. Therefore, more marriages could affect their prestige, trustworthiness, and personality,” the Taliban chief instructed his subordinates.

One of VOA’s sources said Akhundzada grew weary of the “many complaints” he received from Taliban officials who needed financial assistance to pay the dowry for multiple wives. Among the Pashtun tribes of Afghanistan, it is customary for the groom to pay a “bride price” to the bride’s family. The going rate for a bride is currently as high as $26,000 U.S.

The source also said Taliban officials are requesting money to pay for separate houses for each of their wives and substantial upkeep costs for them. High-ranking officials have developed a taste for holding elaborate weddings, which is not only a drain on the Taliban treasury but also brings bad publicity to an organization that presents itself to the public as a union of austere, heavily-armed religious scholars.

Akhundzada’s letter alluded to the bad press these lavish Taliban weddings have generated by advising his officials to protect themselves against “accusation and disgrace,” including allegations of “bribery, misappropriation, and embezzlement,” and prioritize “gaining trust” from the public.

VOA noted that the Taliban’s version of Islamic law technically allows for men to take up to four wives, but Akhundzada stressed that his injunction against taking more than one had been approved by “religious scholars.” Along those lines, he pointed out that the companions of Muhammad were known for having “simple marriages.”

Akhundzada’s letter mentioned that exceptions could be made for men who seek to marry widows, provided they keep the costs down and convince the public they are “spending their own money” rather than dipping into the Taliban treasury.

The Taliban has grown extremely wealthy over the past few years, banking huge profits from illegal drugs, illegal mining operations, extorting “taxes” from the parts of Afghanistan they control, collecting hefty financial donations from supporters in the Middle East, and partnering with the criminal Haqqani Network. They also receive heavy financial support from governments like Russia and China.

A confidential NATO report reviewed by Radio Free Europe (RFE) in September estimated the Taliban raked in $1.6 billion last year, an impressive sum when measured against the legitimate Afghan government’s budget of $5.5 billion. The cost of multiple wives must be skyrocketing to put significant stress on such a huge income stream.

“Unless global action is taken, the Taliban will remain a hugely wealthy organization, with a self-sustaining funding stream and outside support from regional countries. Its role as a destabilizing force, not only in South Asia but globally, will only be enhanced by the withdrawal of the United States from the Afghan theater, and its expected return to the power equation in Kabul,” the NATO report warned.

Crime › Deeper Life School Saga: Accused Student Denies Bullying, Molesting Don-davies by Babalolago(op): 4:50pm On Jan 05, 2021
The accused minor also disclosed that Don-Davies was, however, moved back to the Junior Students hostel when Akpan returned before School closed on December 19, 2020.

He further disclosed that Don-Davies may have been angry that they (him and Ola) didn’t do those things Mr Akpan was doing for him before he fell ill, noting, “Mr Akpan used to wash his clothes, bath him. He also helps him to brush his teeth.

“Mr Akpan returned to School before School closed on December 19, 2020. When he returned, Don Davies was also moved back to his former hostel. He was moved to Senior students hostel because when Mr Akpan was sick the Junior students hostel did not have a boarding master. He was moved out of our hostel on November, 15.”

He further disclosed that when Don-Davies was in his hostel, a female nurse used to come about 6:30 am to give him drugs every day on an empty stomach.

Asked if the School punished him and Ola for bullying, and molesting Don-Davies anus, he responded no.

“Don Davies reported us to the School Principal, (Mrs Ndidi Solomon, already suspended) that Ola and I bully him, stressing, “The Principal invited of us to her office and She told us that she was going to punish us. Even when we tried to explain things to her, She refused to listen. But She did not punish us”

On his part, the accused student’s father, Mr Olusegun Omoniyi, resident in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, said since his son was admitted into that School from JSS1, that he has not received any bad report from the School concerning his conduct.

Mr Omoniyi said he was therefore surprised when Shalom, his son was mentioned in Don-Davies matter.

He explained that even when the Principal, Mrs Solomon contacted him saying that She was going to punish his son, She didn’t tell him the offence the boy had committed.

“So when I saw the story and the alleged involvement of my son, I decided to call my son and asked him why he bullied and molested the boy, but he said he did not do such thing.

“I cannot force my son to tell a lie. And I also allowed him to make statement o the Police last Thursday. And we are going to the police station again tomorrow (Tuesday) in continuation of this matter.

” I am not worried about anything because I believe that my son is telling the truth and I know the truth will prevail, no matter how long it takes. In fact, the whole story is too shallow for me to believe”, Mr Omoniyi said.
