Agriculture / The Role Of Smallholder Farmers In Nigeria In Attaining Food Security by Babbangona: 8:53am On Jun 30, 2021 |
Food Security, as defined by The United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life. This implies that any country or state that lacks access to sufficient food to meet its dietary needs at all times, especially at a wide margin, is at the risk of becoming a food insecure nation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a recent report highlighted that “In conflict-hit northern Nigeria, projections for the June-August lean season show that the number of people in emergency levels of acute food insecurity is likely to almost double – to over 1.2 million – since the same period last year. In the next six months, food and nutrition insecurity is set to rise considerably in northern Nigeria with some 13 million people affected unless food and livelihood assistance is scaled up”. There are various factors that contribute to food insecurity in Nigeria, they are High level of poverty due to significant low-income earning population, climate change impacting farming yields, little or no use of agri-tech solutions to make farming more efficient and price inflation. Other secondary factors are limited access to proper post-harvest storage solutions, limited access to processing facilities and equipment, lack of investment in the agricultural sector, and inadequate agricultural infrastructure, in addition to low access to information and markets for smallholder farmers. Agriculture / Ways To Mitigate Climate Change In Agriculture by Babbangona: 1:41pm On Jun 11, 2021 |
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) defines Climate change as a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s local, regional and global climates. Over the years, the Earth’s climate has experienced tremendous variations resulting from burning fossil fuels such as oil and gas, which increase emissions of harmful gases. Detrimental elements of the human environment including deforestation, urbanization as well as other human and non-human factors contribute to the data on climate change. A group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world, under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there’s a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet. ways to mitigate climate change in agriculture - a dry field. The direct effect of climate change on the environment includes: rising and fluctuating temperature, rising sea level, an increase in the ocean temperatures and so on. The translation of the effect of these to the immediate environment are extreme heatwaves and heavy rainfalls; more climate forced migration; an increase in food related crises especially for countries who have less food security; health related issues due to rising temperatures and its overall impact on agriculture. The adverse effects of climate change on agriculture consequently affects not just the farmers.... Read more here: https://babbangona.com/ways-to-mitigate-climate-change-agriculture/

Agriculture / Effects Of Climate Change On Agriculture by Babbangona: 10:50am On Jun 08, 2021 |
For sustainable agriculture to meet the rising demand for food in Nigeria, we must observe climate change in agriculture and its effect around us. Looking into these climate changes will help understand them more quickly, especially regarding how they affect farming, agricultural productivity and livelihood. Climate change consists of extensive weather patterns and global warming caused by artificial emissions of greenhouse gases. Since there have been periods of climatic shifts in the past, humans witnessed an unforeseen impact on the earth’s climate system in the mid 20th century, resulting in a modification on a global scale. As a result of the unexpected developments, agronomists and weather experts concluded that extensive study and research on climate changes in agriculture would solve common agricultural challenges such as; food insecurity, soil degradation, and other possible issues in the future. A major factor responsible for subsequent climate changeability and global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases. WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE? It is a shift in the weather pattern that results in related changes that occur on land surfaces, ice sheets, and the oceans over a period. Because the weather is the state of the atmosphere, its wind, temperature, humidity, rainfall, etc. — are all influenced by oceans, land surfaces, and ice sheets. They come together to form what we call The Climate System. Alternatively, climate change in agriculture is the modification in the probabilistic properties of the climate system regarding agricultural output. Such changes could span over long periods, like a decade or several decades. Natural and artificial processes influence climate change, including volcanoes, sun radiation, human influences, the shift in land and atmospheric composition, and the climate system’s internal variability. New weather-predicting technologies can help to curb unprecedented climate change in agriculture. The weather can be forecasted up to about a week in advance with the appropriate tech. Through weather forecasting technologies, farmers can predict momentary fluctuations in climate in-between planting seasons. HOW CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTS AGRICULTURE Climate change affects agriculture in various ways through changes in temperature which may lead to increased risk of food insecurity, irregular rainfalls or droughts affecting the quantity and quality of crops produced, use of pesticides and more. Here are some of major ways climate change is affecting agriculture: Read More: https://babbangona.com/effects-of-climate-change-on-agriculture/
