MAPOLY STUDENTS GROAN , DESERT ABEOKUTA OVER CONTINUOUS DELAY OF EXAMS Following the continuous delay in the second semester examinations ,students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta have deserted their houses in Abeokuta for their parents' houses PLATFORM TIMES gathered that, the students who had waited for the settlement of the logjam between the Ogun State government and members of Staff of MAPOLY over the creation of Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology were said to havee groaned and left for their parents houses . The examinations which was unofficially suspended since August 18, was not unconnected to the argument which has greeted the process of the transition of the institution into a degree awarding institution. Investigations conducted by PLATFORM TIMES shows that the lecturers refused to conduct the 2nd semester examination of 2016/2017 academic session because none of them knows their fate after the students wrote their examination without giving a clear position on their job security by the state governor,Senator Ibikunle Amosun. When contacted, the leader of the delegates of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic ,MAPOLY, Mr Chibuzor Osifalujo of the department of Accountancy said “ Immediately after the protest of students last week the government called us into a meeting where he promised a few things which include the extension of the existence of the Higher National Diploma programmes of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta, for four years in the presence of the commissioner for education Mrs Modupe Mujota. “When we got back to School , we reported our discussion with the governor back to the congress and the congress unanimously agreed that for official sake, the communiqué of the congress which also carries all the promises of His Excellency, should be sent to the commissioner for education for her attestation over everything the governor said which was also duly written in the communiqué. “But to our greatest surprise, we have sent our communiqué to the government since last week Wednesday but the government is yet to respond and as a result we are at a cross road",he said . During a background check, an official of the polytechnic confirmed that the state government has sent a letter to the management of the institution confirming the governor’s promise to allow for the admission of prospective HND students for both full time and part-time adding that machineries for the admission process have been set to motion immediately. Our reporter who visited some students environments in the metropolis which include; Oluwo, Abule Ojere, Mango, Adigbe among others noticed that only few of the students were sighted while others were said to have traveled back home. A student of the department of Computer science Taiwo Animasahun told our reporter that for the fact that he has not traveled does not mean that he is happy with the condition of things in the institution,he however appeals to the government to expedite actions in resolving with the ASUP in MAPOLY. His words, ”For the fact that I haven’t left for home does not means that I am happy being here, the government needs to take us very seriously, this is very unfair not even in a state where the governor claims to have the people at heart. “I am begging both the government and ASUP MAPOLY to please expedite actions on this case.” Another student who lives in Oluwo, simply identified himself as Sulaiman also submitted that,”in my house we have sixteen rooms but only two of us are left now, every other student has gone home. “This is very unfair and this is an indication that this government does not care about what happens to students at all. we have protested and he has promised to speak to leaders of ASUP MAP *©BABS ADEOLA* |
Ogun state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun haa assured current students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta that the creation of Moshood Abiola University ,( MAUSTECH) as well as Ogun state polytechnic ipokia will not in any way disrupt the existing academic calendar Governor Amosun who gave the assurance this Tuesday while addressing students of MAPOLY who came on a peaceful protest to expressed their grievances on the issues generated which has hindered them from writing their exams in the last three weeks that they will not be moved to ipokia as there will be a grace period of four years before MAPOLY goes into extinction He described the withholding of their exams as a strategy by the institutions lecturers to hold the government into Ransome assuring that the representatives of the institution will be invited immediately to explain why such is happening. According to the Governor , the lecturers are expecting a situation where the current academic staff of MAPOLY will be automatically transferred to the new MAUSTECH saying that would not happen except those who are qualified to lecture in a university would be absorbed. While further allying the fears of the students the governor observed that new lecturers would be employed in ipokia to lecture the ND 1 students but clarified that no new National diploma students would be employed at MAPOLY this year He cautioned the students against being used for political ends as Ogun state is known for standard. The students led by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria students Comrade Sikirullahi Balogun Olawale had staged a peaceful protest to express their grievances over the issue .

NIGERIA: The Journey So Far. By Babs Adeola Nigeria has been in search of progress and development since October 1st, 1960 when Nigeria got her Independence from Britain. The journey ought to be a transition from bad people and eventually lead to the desires of good people, and that was the desire of our founding fathers. Independence broke the bonds of Colonialism, freeing Nigeria to be a sovereign state, to practice free will and to determine her own fate. 57 years after independence and 16 years of uninterrupted democratic government, What has independence produce? Nigeria seem to be in extended infancy when you consider Official corruption, rigging, Assassination, Unemployment, Militancy, Terrorism and lot of evils in our society. October 1st 1960 was a dawn of new hope in Nigeria. All was set to engender a new beginning for Nigeria with the demise of the colonial masters. Hope was high that all will be well within a short period. When we got our independence, everyone believed things would work out. Independent Nigeria had its problem, prominent was the civil war that ravaged Nigeria, otherwise known as "Biafran war". Eventually, Nigeria survived and the war ended. The 70th's was the era of oil, the country was so rich that the president declared that "the problem of the country was not how to get money but how to spend the money". As insane as the comment was, truly there was so much money except that it was eventually squandered. Some years ago, our currency was so strong that it was more valuable than the U.S dollar, but what do we have today? Our economy has plummeted and our Naira is useless. Nigeria of yesterday excelled in all field, our universities were all equipped and students received the best education. We heard of the exploit of the first generation universities like Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan among others. Today, the glories of these schools are in decline, with archaic libraries with antiquated books and laboratories. One can only hope for a better tomorrow. We heard of huge amounts budgeted every year for road construction and maintenance for the Health sector, Agriculture, Education, Security etc... But there is nothing to show for all these. Our health facilities are not improving, our roads are death traps and our education sector is collapsing, senior government officials and politicians travel out for minor headache but helpless Nigerians are left at the mercy of our ill-equipped hospitals, Children of the rich school outside the country, while children of the poor attend schools without facilities, Politicians travel in bullet proof cars and well protected mansions, while millions are at the mercy of armed robber. Some of us grew up without being able to differentiate between Christians and Muslims because of religious harmony. I remember that celebration of Christmas, New year, Edi- FItril and Edi-Kabir were everybody's affair. Christians celebrate with Muslim and vice versa, but today the story is different. Sectional regional and ethnic groups were then an abomination, but today we see Odua People's Congress (OPC), Arewa Youth Forum, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), IPOB, Boko Haram, etc have all come together to redefine our corporate existence. Everybody is obviously dissatisfied with the state of things in the country. Our Independence and democracy only increased the number of people to steal our money. Yes, we all decried military dictatorship but it was not as corrupt as today's democracy. There are few imposed thieves during military era, our elected and selected thieves steal more because they are more than the military thieves, worse still they, represent nobody but themselves. Nigeria celebrate her 57 years of Freedom from Britain today. But the question is "are ordinary Nigerians truly Free?" A retrospection of what Nigeria was and what Nigeria Is and what tomorrow portend leaves much to be desired. What is the reason for independence where few benefit and masses suffer? we hope to see a truly independent Nigeria and a new Nigeria. Let say there is hope for a better Nigeria but I don't think we have a new and Independent Nigeria yet. Happy Independence Anniversary to all Nigerians. God Bless Nigeria. By: Comr. Babatunde G. [quote author=HenryDion post=49686966]Just last year, i was seeking admission into MOUAU and the depression that follows such cause is quite horrible. I prayed, i cried, i slept in the alter and right there, i made many vows. My friends are already undergraduate, why can't i? Am i not brilliant enough? . I remember going for the post post utme exam and frankly speaking, i wasn't impressed with my performance. The questions were cheap but if care isn't taken, can fail a student woefully. After the exam, I grabbed my bag, walking down the path that leads to home with a dejected look. i got home and the first thing i did was to burn all my past question papers.. I don't need them again. My faith wasn't strong though. There were doubts but i pushed myself forward. . The expectations from friends and family was overwhelming. This might be my last chance if i fail again. Will i be able to accept failure? Suicide came to my mind but later got discarded. I lived the remaining days in fear, anxiety and depression. . First list came out and immediately i got the news, my heart sunk into my stomach. I wasn't breathing. I tried to but it was a futile effort. I went out to the wild and the fresh air calmed my bursting mind a little. I brought out my Asha 201 and in my bowser, i typed JAMB url. The portal opened with swiftness as I gulped down with so much hardness. I head over to CHECK ADMISSION STATUS and input my reg.no at the empty box. . Swiftly like before, it opened and right before my eyes, i saw my doom. 'You have not been offered admission yet...' I wanted to cry.. No! Tears were rolling down already and i looked up, seeing a blurred future before me. I never thought that guys could cry but silently, i was crying alongside with my heart. I looked at my phone again and Holy Mary! I had mistakenly clicked on the wrong year. . I started the while process again as my heart beat so hard against my chest. The website was now slow and watching the bar load was the worst torment of all. Something that was about to change the future was just minutes away, perhaps seconds and my mind was at war on what to anticipate. I input my reg.no again and clicked the CHECK button. . The website began to break, the E network sign started going off and on making the whole process more hectic. Some invisible forces are no doubt at work. I began to pray in my heart, i started begging, oooh God, just do this for me. Another interface popped up on my screen and my heart skipped with a leap capable of killing a man. I wanted to scroll down and view the information, but my fingers and knees were weak. With the last strength within, i fought and right before my eyes was an admission letter. . "Dear Henry Ibeleme, you have been offered admission into Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture to study..." . I didn't know whether to cry, scream or jump. My pulse was increasing in beat and before i knew it, i have let out a powerful shout that shook the world. Am now an undergraduate and so will YOU. JUST BELIEVE. . BY, HENRY IBELEME .
