[MUST READ] CURRENT CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF FOOT ROT DISEASE IN ANIMAL CAUSES The cause of the infection are confirmed as species of anaerobic bacteria, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus. Both bacteria are common to the environment in which predisposed animals live, and and Dichelobacter nodusus that resides in the feet of infected animals. The disease is usually spread from infected carrier animals into the soil and then to the non-infected feet of healthy animals. Overgrown hooves will predispose an animal to foot rot. Wet soils, muddy pens and filth increase the possibility of disease outbreaks. SYMPTOMS 1. Inflammation of the hooves cause the animal not to walk properly as a result of the pain caused by responsible bacteria (Fusobacterium necrophorum and Dichelobacter nodusus) - The sole and the sidewall of the diseased foot appear ragged and rotten and have an extremely bad necrotic odor. read full post here http://www.farmersbrain.com/2017/08/must-read-current-causes-symptoms.html |
The congress which was held in Ibadan, dwelt on how aquaculture business in Nigeria can be sustained amid the rising costs of fish feeds and the irregular prices attached to fish products, as well as how consumers are affected. These, according to the Association is threatening fish production in the country. Speaking exclusively to AgroNigeria, CAFAN President, Mr. Rotimi Olibale, said the rise in the cost of production in the country necessitated the meeting to create a bigger platform for other farmers not in the association so as to agree on the way forward for the industry. “Our cost of production has gone out of reach, and because we are in an economic recession, the purchasing power of the populace has also gone down, so the farmers as producers of food, should ensure security of the populace. So we came together to compare notes, to see how we can better produce our fish at a lower cost,” he said. Olibade further noted that “We are still below the United Nations (UN) recommended consumption of fish packaging. We are about 13 to 14 per cent whereas the UN standard is 20 per cent capital. So if we don’t address these situations, the industry would be killed.” Also speaking, the General Manager, Durante lndustries, Dr Tomi Asuni, who is also part of the conveners, allayed the fears of many regarding the issue of price fixing for fish products, which was discussed as a way of regulating the market. “What has been happening is that farmers have been selling below their cost price. So what we are trying to do is to establish people’s individual cost prices and having that as a minimum selling price so that farmers do not sell at a loss, rather, see full post, photos and Videos Here http://www.farmersbrain.com/2017/08/fish-farmers-hold-congress-to-address.html |
A Nigerian startup, Releaf, has secured a $120,000 investment from YCombinator, the world’s most prestigious early start-up investor, to connect agribusinesses to potential customers. The investment is aimed at helping the start-up scale its agricultural solution in Nigeria. According to the Founders, Releaf connects Nigerian agri-businesses to customers they can trust. Inspired to work in Nigerian agriculture by Former Minister of Agriculture and current President of the African Development Bank (AFDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the founders said they spent the past several months, working to understand the challenges for businesses in Nigerian agriculture. Through extensive research and several trips on-ground, the group have concluded that obtaining buyers for products is one of the largest challenges businesses face. “That is the most frequently mentioned problem,” they said. Co-founder, Ikenna Nzewi informed that, “Portals with millions of African businesses do not facilitate many true business connections, because most business originates through word of mouth. It became clear to us most of the business-to-business challenges result from a lack of trust.” The group therefore came up with a solution that can help build trust between buyers and sellers by helping them establish mutual networks. “Unlike conventional B2B models where businesses post what they sell, Releaf’s platform allows suppliers to directly find the contract opportunities with buyers,” the founders said in a recently released press statement. First, businesses register and indicate which commodities they are looking to sell. Then, they are presented with a list of verified buyer contracts for those commodities that they may apply to. Finally, Releaf verifies the seller and, if they are qualified, makes a direct connection between the 2 parties,” they added. Companies with mutual ties are thereby recommended to connect with one another. When a business connection is established, both parties can double the network of businesses they are now connected to. So, instead of cold inquires being sent to buyers, contacting is directly facilitated by Releaf to ensure a 90 per cent response rate from clients. The platform which will be like Facebook for agricultural players has already verified over 600 agribusinesses and facilitated over 100 connections while the founders worked part time as students. They are now publicly allowing agribusinesses to apply for verification through www.releaf.ng. The CEO of Releaf, Isaiah Udotong, explains: “Our vision is to make doing business in Africa easier. For too long, reliable business has been restricted to few trusted partners and have not found success finding partners on B2B sites. At Releaf, we believe with a larger trusted business network, private sector growth can be stimulated across the African continent.” The three founders Ikenna Nzewi, Uzoma Ayogu, and Isaiah Udotong are Nigerian-Americans, with Engineering and Computer Science backgrounds. Prior to launching the company, the founders worked at Bain, Microsoft, and Facebook, respectively http://www.farmersbrain.com/2017/08/nigerian-startup-releaf-secures-120000.html

Ginger has been known for its efficacy in the treatment of several diseases and sicknesses over the years. For example, it has been confirmed that ginger relieves muscle pain, period cramps, reduces arthritic joint pain, relieves morning sickness, treats motion sickness, eases any type of nausea as well as protects against cancer. These are good enough reasons to recommend ginger for daily consumption in every household. Moreover, the recent research findings in India have further accentuated the importance of ginger as Ginger Massage has been discovered to provide best treatments for kidney failure and dialysis patients. This was introduced by S. Pari, a software engineer, for his father G. Shanmugam who suffered from kidney failure. The Ginger Massage therapy is said to be effective as the failed kidney was restored to the normal level. In a bid to document and preserve the therapy for scientific verification, Maya Tiwari wrote a book titled, Ayurveda Secrets of Healing, in which the procedures for Ginger Massage for kidney failure and dialysis patients are clearly spelt out: Take 125 g of washed ginger and cut them into pieces and grind in a mixie. Put this crushed ginger in a white cloth and tie it. see full post here http://www.farmersbrain.com/2017/07/must-read-ginger-therapy-for-kidney.html |

One of the Best Agriculturist (Debo Onafowora) is making wave in the Agriculture Sector in Nigeria. He shared his Testimony of Success Regarding the ABUAD Moringa Factory project using his facebook page.. See Below . Image may contain: sky, tree, outdoor and nature Leading the MASSIVE Multi- Million naira ABUAD Moringa Factory project from day1 till now(4 years) has been a Herculean task, but to God alone be all the glory. Starting with the 100 hectares of Moringa Plantation (which I daresay is the largest in West Africa), to the Factory set-up and then getting NAFDAC certification for seven food and Cosmetic products, processing, packaging, product Launching, Marketing and Distribution, very few people can successfully imagine the scale of the project! The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, came to the factory, among many other places he visited today in ABUAD and was flabbergasted, to say the least. I still maintain and re-iterate here that without adding Business to Agriculture, Africa and Nigeria aren't ready to move to the next level. I also heartily congratulate Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), the president and Founder of ABUAD, for his vision and sacrifice towards redefining education in Africa, especially with a major interest in Agriculture. My sincere gratitude to all my team members at the factory, especially the dogged and hardworking Prince Oyesanmi.Team work they say, makes the Dream work and they have all, through their support made that a reality. My advice to other universities in Nigeria and Africa is to learn how to combine Research with Entrepreneurship. This is what ABUAD has done and is still doing. The good news is that we are still available to offer the right consultation to anyone who wants to join the CHANGE by establishing a Value Chain and Agribusiness focused institution at whatever desired level. Distributors wanted nation wide.... See more Photos using the link below http://www.farmersbrain.com/2017/07/nigeria-now-has-largest-moringa.html

The Team Leader, USAID Bee Keeping Pollination Project, Mr. David Musa, says Nigeria can generate over ten billion dollars from local and international trade in honey and other hive products. Musa made this known in an interview on the sideline of a Capacity Building Workshop for bee-farmers in Goshen, Nasarawa State. According to him, “Honey trade can generate up to 10 billion dollars if you look at cumulative values from honey and other hive products and the value of pollination,’’ he said. Musa who is the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Apiculture Platform disclosed that the domestic consumption rate of honey in the country was currently 380,000 tonnes, with a global price of about 4.5 billion dollars. He further emphasised the need for the country to get honey export certification from the European Union, adding that it would give credibility to the forthcoming largest Africa Apiculture Trade to be hosted by Nigeria in 2018 which according to him will put Nigeria on the global bee-keeping map. ‘‘The EU certificate is one of the highest levels of certification and it is necessary to get that. Nigeria consumes about 380,000 tonnes of honey, a current global price of about 4.5 billion dollars and that is just domestic consumption of honey; we have not gone into industrial production, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals,’’ he said. In the same vein, Alhaji Mohammed Mahmud, a bee-farmer and participant at the workshop, commended the Federal Government and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) for the workshop. ‘‘This program is coming at the appropriate time because many people do not know about bee farming. The workshop has come to educate bee-keepers like me, on the techniques, problems and prospects to move the industry and country forward.” Alhaji Mahmud also noted that the workshop was positioned to look at the existing laws that govern the bee industry. ‘‘We want to look at it together and see what changes can be made to make the industry move forward. I want to assure you that we will do our best to make sure that necessary legislation for the bee industry will be taken care of,” he noted. http://www.farmersbrain.com/2017/07/bee-farming-can-generate-billions-of.html

The President of the African Development Bank (AFDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has bagged the 2017 World Food Prize, for his dedication and commitment towards driving change in African agriculture and improving food security for millions across the continent. The World Food Prize, received by Adesina at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C was founded by Nobel Peace Prize recipient, (Late) Dr. Norman Borlaug and is focused on the importance of nutritious and sustainable food supply for people across the world. In his remarks, Adesina reiterated the need to turn agriculture into a business across Africa in order to create wealth for African economies. “My life’s mission is to lift millions of people out of poverty, especially farmers in rural areas of Africa and the World Food Prize gives me an even greater global platform to make that future happen much faster for Africa.” Applauding the feat, the President of the World Food Prize Foundation, Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, said the selection of President Akinwumi Adesina for the honour reflects his breakthrough achievements as Minister of Agriculture of Nigeria, his critical role in the development of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), and for his giant strides as the President of the African Development Bank.” The organisers of the Prize noted that Adesina’s policies and bold reforms expanded Nigeria’s food production by 21 million metric tons, and led to the country attracting $5.6 billion in private sector investments in agriculture – earning him the reputation of ‘Farmers’ Minister’. As part of efforts geared towards enabling Africa live up to its potential of feeding itself, and the world, President Adesina has ensured that the African Development Bank continues to focus heavily on food security. The Bank’s recent commitment of $24 billion towards agriculture in the next 10 years, gives credence to this, as it targets self-sufficiency and agricultural industrialisation. http://farmersbrain.com/2017/06/27/adesina-bags-agricultures-version-nobel-prize/

UNDERSTANDING HYDROPONICS HYDROPONICS HYDROPONIC SYSTEM HYDROPONIC FODDER MATERIALS NEEDED FOR HYDROPONICS FODDER ESTABLISHMENT BENEFITS OF HYDROPONICS TO BOTH RUMINANTS AND MONOGASTRIC ANIMALS HYDROPONICS is the cultivation of plant in nutrient solution without the use of soil. This idea of hydroponics was first experimented in 1930s as an outgrowth of the culture techniques used by plant physiologists in plant nutrition experiments and ever since the success of it, a livestock farmer in a popular advance country have been able to reason effectively to adopt it, during the time of drought, hardship season for the growth of plants to avail food for the growth, development and maintenance of livestocks. Hydroponic has been a system that has been discovered since 1930 has I have inscribed earlier, but using it as a method of raising fodder for animals is a new introduction among livestock farmers. The idea of using hydroponics as an alternative option to most conventional feed concentrates, silage and hay must have been as a result of some factors such as Low nutritional quality of some animal feed. High cost of feed Unavailability of some particular ingredients to use for the formulation of high quality animal feed during a specific time. Low palatability of some animal feed e.g Hay Elimination of pasture as a source of food to livestock during the dry season and cost of irrigation to ensure the maintenance of great supply of water to avail pastoral grasses for livestock in the dry season when availability of water is always a problem and magnificent treat to livestock farmers etc. HYDROPONICS SYSTEM Hydroponic fodder system is a growing platform that has been intentionally developed to sprout grains (barley, sorghum, maize as the best) or legume seeds (clovers, soybeans, sunflower seeds etc.) to produce highly nutritious fodder with the use of materials that are affordable such as........................... read full article here http://farmersbrain.com/2017/06/22/grow-hydroponics-fodder-livestock-understanding-hydroponics/

We have the potential to wipe out your entire crop or lawn. In fact, sometimes, they cause harm to livestocks. Such cases abound every year where animals succumb from feeding on poisonous weeds. Weeds reduce farm and forest productivity, they invade crops, smother pastures and in some cases can harm livestock. They agressively compete for water, nutrients and sunlight, resulting in reduced crop yield and poor crop quality. However, some weeds are friendly and which are foe. For some of them, their advantages outweigh the disadvantages that we can afford to live with them in our gardens. Therefore, to be able to successfully control weeds in your lawn, garden, or pastures; you must first of all understand them beyond common knowledge. By doing so you’ll know better how to sustainably keep them under control. Here are some of the invasive weeds in your garden and lawns. 1. PIG WEED (Amaranthus spp) You might find two common types of pigweeds; low amaranth (deflexus) and tall amaranth (palmeri). Palmer pigweed is a broadleaf species of edible flowering plant in the amaranth genus. This wild edible can be a beneficial weed as well as a companion plant serving as a trap for leaf miners and some other pests; also, it tends to shelter ground beetles (which prey upon insect pests) The plant can be toxic to livestock animals due to the presence of nitrates in the leaves. Palmer amaranth has a tendency to absorb excess soil nitrogen, and if grown in overly fertilized soils, it can contain excessive levels of nitrates, even for humans. Like spinach and many other leafy greens, amaranth leaves also contain oxalic acid, which can be harmful to individuals with kidney problems if consumed in excess. Palmer amaranth may be the most aggressive pigweed species with respect to growth rate and competitive ability. 2. Lamb’s quarters – Chenopodium album Chenopodium album is a fast-growing weedy annual plant in the genus Chenopodium. Though cultivated in some regions, the plant is elsewhere considered a weed. It is one of the more robust and competitive weeds, capable of producing crop losses of up to 13% in corn, 25% in soybeans, and 48% in sugar beets at an average plant distribution. It may be controlled by dark tillage, rotary hoeing, or flaming when the plants are small. Crop rotation of small grains will suppress an infestation. It is easily controlled with a number of pre-emergence herbicides. Chenopodium album is vulnerable to leaf miners, making it a useful trap crop as a companion plant. Growing near other plants, it attracts leaf miners which might otherwise have attacked the crop to be protected. It is a host plant for the beet leafhopper, an insect which transmits curly top virus to beet crops. As some of the common names suggest, it is also used as a feed (both the leaves and the seeds) for chickens and other poultry.
