Fear has gripped many over the disappearance of John Udochukwu Elekwachi, a final-year student of Combined Social Sciences at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Elekwachi, a campus blogger, was picked up by some yet-to-be-identified armed men last Monday at his lodge in the middle of the night. This is coming a few days after he completed his final year examination.
Elekwachiâs elder sister, Uchendu, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on the telephone on Sunday, said she got a distress call that her brother was taken away by some men. She expressed concern about the incident noting that the family had not received any update regarding the victimâs whereabouts.
Uchendu said, âI was in Port Harcourt on Tuesday when they called me. The landlady said some unknown men came to my brotherâs lodge with four Hilux and one Jeep by 3 a.m., and took him away on Monday. Since then, we have not heard from him, and those people have not called since then.
âI have gone to report in various places. We went to the Enugu State Criminal Investigation Department, the Department of Security Services, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to make complaints, but they said he was not there. I have not been myself since then.â
The incident was also confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by the Executive Council of the combined Social Sciences Students Association (Comssa), UNN chapter, co-signed by the President, Okonkwo Richard, and the General Secretary, Obolo Mmesoma.
The statement partly reads,â It is with concern that we announce that our classmate, Elekwachi John U (John El), has been reported missing. He was last seen on April 15, 2024, at his lodge in the Green House.
âAn eyewitness gave an alleged account of John being taken away by armed men who arrived with four Hilux trucks, but the name of the agency was not disclosed.
âWe are working closely with the authorities and Johnâs family to ensure his safe return. If anyone has any information regarding his whereabouts, please, contact UNN security or any federal agency immediately.â
When our correspondent contacted the spokesperson for the Enugu Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, on Sunday, he did not respond to his calls or reply to the text messages sent to his telephone number as of the time of filing this report. Crime / Undergraduate Slaughtered Girlfriend For Seizing His Phone In Ogun by BadNews: 7:43am On Jan 30 |
A Student of a private health technology institution in Ogun State, Adebayo Adeyemi, had a girlfriend, Mercy, also a colleague, in the same school in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. But the girlâs name did not work for her recently when Adeyemi decided to deal with her for seizing his phone over an alleged relationship with another girl.
Mercilessly, Adeyemi put an abrupt end to Mercyâs life by allegedly slaughtering her with a knife, though he claimed he hit her on the head with a big stick inside the bush he took her to.
He was accompanied by his colleague and friend, Michael Huessinon, and Mercyâs friend (name withheld) who initially thought Adeyemi was taking his lover to a police station, as he said, and decided to be with her.
Mercyâs friend got her own portion of the punishment as she was allegedly raped by Michael and threatened with death if she dared to tell anyone about her friendâs murder and the sexual abuse she went through.
The two suspects were arrested by detectives in Ogun State Police Command for conspiracy to commit murder and rape. Confirming the story, the police image-maker in Ogun, SP Omolola Odutola, said the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, directed the transfer of the case to Homicide Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, for further investigation.
Dateline was January 16. Nigerian Tribune learnt that Adeyemi went to the residence of his girlfriend whom he accused of taking his phone. The phone issue, according to police sources, began in September 2023 when Mercy took Adeyemiâs phone and kept it after discovering that he was cheating on her. When she refused to return the phone, Adeyemi left for Lagos State to do the practical of his course.
On his return to Ijebu Ode in January, he went to Mercyâs hostel to ask why she took his phone. It was gathered that he met Michael there and told him about what he intended to do. Michael reportedly suggested taking Mercy to âIsland,â a code said to be understood by cultists.
It was further gathered that they saw a driver that Michael was familiar with as he was moving out. They stopped him and asked him to pick them, as Adeyemi claimed he was taking Mercy to a police station for the matter to be settled.
When they got to a spot along the way by a bush, Adeyemi, Michael, Mercy and her friend got down. Adeyemi reportedly took Mercy to a field in the bush where he reportedly queried her concerning his phone. He was said to have eventually slaughtered her there, with Michael pinning her down.
The source told the Nigerian Tribune that when they came out of the bush, Mercyâs friend saw Adeyemi with a bloody knife. He also had blood stains on his clothes. She asked of Mercy, her friend. This made Adeyemi tell his friend, Michael, that they should kill her also to cover up their deeds.
However, Michael advised Adeyemi not to do so, with the belief that the young lady would not spill the beans. In fear, she followed Michael until they got to their hostel. Michael was said to have further instilled fear in her by telling her to give him whatever he asked if she didnât want to be killed.
Terrified, the lady asked him what he wanted, and he demanded N200,000. With wide eyes, the lady told him that she didnât have such money, and Michael then demanded s*x.
He was also said to have brought out a padlock which he presented as a charm and asked the lady to swear by it that she would not tell anyone of what happened between them or else she would face the consequence. After having his way with her, the lady went to the police to report what was done to her and her friend.
In an interview with Adeyemi, he said that he didnât know the spirit that came over him to commit such an act. He claimed that it was fueled by the anger he felt when he was hit by the deceased as he was trying to cuddle her on the neck.
His narration went thus: âIâm from Atiba, Oyo State, but based in Ijebu Ode. Iâm 30 years old. Iâm a student of Dental Therapy Department of a College of Health Technology, Ijebu Ode.
âLast year, my girlfriend, Mercy, a fellow student, took my phone on September 2, 2023, and didnât return it. When I saw her one-on-one, I asked her to give me my phone, but she refused to do so. I went for practical in Lagos State on September 4, and on my return this year, I went to her again but she was just dodging me until I asked people to help get in touch with her.
âI went to where she was residing and asked her again to give me my phone. She didnât respond. I told a man living in the same house with her that I would take her to a police station where she would give me the phone. She agreed with me on that.
âI asked the man, who was attending the same church with my friend, Michael, to give me his car key for me to drive to the station but he said he would not give me the key but would drive us there. I knew him through that friend who is also a student in my school.
âOn our way, I decided not to go to the police station and asked him to drop us by a bush. It was that my friend whom I had initially told of taking my ex-girlfriend to police station who said I should take her to the bush and torture her into submission.
âWe were six in the car, including me, Mercy, Mercyâs friend, Michael, the driver and one other student who was going to school. The driver dropped us by a bush side and left with the student. On getting into the bush, I asked Mercy to sit on the ground. Michael and her friend were with us.
âI started questioning Mercy on what I did to her that warranted her taking my phone. At last, she told me that I offended her by cheating on her and ditching her for another girl, which made her seize my phone. I asked for the phone and she said that she had given it to someone, promising to buy me another one.
âAfter that, I held her on the neck and started cuddling her and told her that what she just told me was what I had been waiting to hear from her. I was telling her that she f****d up and other things. That was how she picked something from the ground and hit me on the head with it.
âI became so mad at her that I didnât know when I was possessed by a spirit. I hit her head with a big stick and she fell and died. She told me she was 20 years old when we were dating.â
When asked whether he was into drugs, Adeyemi denied using drugs, saying that he only used to take alcohol poured on herbs for medicinal purposes. He also said that he had never joined a cult.
The second suspect, Michael, also spoke thus: âI am an Egun from Benin Republic but my parents relocated to Ipokia in Ogun State. I will be 29 in February. Iâm also a student in the same school with Adeyemi.
âIn the morning of the fateful day, Adeyemi came to Mercyâs compound to ask about his phone. I was there with the driver. Later, he said he wanted to take Mercy to the police station but I didnât want to go there with him because I didnât want any trouble. So, I asked him to go somewhere within the community to ask her questions.
âHe asked for my friendâs car key but that one refused to give him, offering to take him to the police station. On the way, Adeyemi asked him to stop by the bush side and I came down with him, Mercy and her friend, while the driver left with the student in the car. Adeyemi and Mercy entered the bush and I stayed by the side with her friend.
âLater, I saw Adeyemi come out with a wound on his head. I asked him what happened and he replied that Mercy injured him and he also hit her. I asked about her and he said that she was inside the bush, in the throes of death.
âMercyâs friend and I immediately moved away from the spot and headed home, leaving the body in the bush. I was frightened by Adeyemiâs looks. We got to the compound where Mercy and the driver lived and stood there. The friend was scared and said that she would go to my room to rest.
âWhen we got to my place, I told her that I wanted to sleep with her, but she refused. She pleaded with me, saying that she would give me money if that was what I wanted. She promised to transfer the money immediately. I demanded for N200,000 and she said she didnât have such money. That was when I slept with her. When I was done, I brought out a dish with black soap in it and warned her not to tell anyone about what happened between us, or else the consequences would be dire.
âLater, Mercyâs friend went to a brother with whom I was attending the same church and reported what happened. That was how the police were informed and Adeyemi was apprehended while he was with his current girlfriend. Adeyemi just told me that he wanted to torture Mercy. He didnât tell me he would kill her. I didnât know what took over me that made me rape Mercyâs friend.â Source: https://tribuneonlineng.com/how-undergraduate-slaughtered-girlfriend-for-seizing-his-phone/ 1 Like 2 Shares |

Travel / Air Peace To Begin London Operations by BadNews: 5:36am On Nov 04, 2023 |
Despite inconsistent government policies coupled with bureaucratic bottlenecks hindering the smooth operations of indigenous airlines, West Africaâs largest carrier, Air Peace, recently recorded another breakthrough.
This time it is not the expansion of its fleets as has been the case, rather the private carrier made a remarkable entry into the European air space after securing Foreign Carrier Operator Permit, FCOP, to fly to London.
This permit allows airlines from other regions to fly to Europe and Third Country Operator Permit (TCO-UK) that enables airlines to operate to UK.
The airline, founded in 2013 will now operate direct flights with its luxury wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft to these destinations.
While commenting on the milestone, Air Peace Chairman, Allen Onyema, stated that the airline has secured Foreign Carrier Operator Permit, FCOP, which allows airlines from other regions to fly to Europe and Third Country Operator Permit (TCO-UK) that enables airlines to operate to UK.
He said: âWe obtained these permits that qualify us to fly to UK. Before you obtain these approvals, they will audit you very well. You have to go through stringent audit, which we passed. We obtained the permit last week.â
The airline also expanded its Asian footprints with the commencement of direct scheduled commercial flights into Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The inaugural flight, operated with one of the airlineâs B777s, was airborne from Kano last Tuesday, with 231 passengers.
Air Peace, before now, had been operating charter flights to Saudi Arabia, airlifting Muslim pilgrims. But this inaugural flight officially kicked off its scheduled operations into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Onyema, described the entry into Jeddah as âanother milestone recorded in the annals of Nigeriaâs aviation historyâ, stating that Jeddah is the airlineâs sixth international destination in just nine years of launching commercial flight operations.
He noted that with the entry into Jeddah, Air Peace has increased its presence on the Asian continent.
Our Encounters â Onyema
Meanwhile, it would be recalled that in the last three years, the airline has been striving to commence scheduled operations through the route but has been hindered by several challenges ranging from infrastructural gaps, government policies, landing permits among others.
For instance, during the evacuation flights at the peak of the covid pandemic, Air Peace struggled to get a landing permit into Heathrow airport to help Nigerians.
However, after government intervention, the airline got the permit and tickets were sold out within two hours for a 364-seater aircraft with its Boeing triple seven, B777.
In response to the development, Onyema noted that the reason for the immediate sales was a function of pricing dynamics.
According to him, âIt is because Air Peace understood the plight of Nigerians and fixed its fare at less than N400, 000, while another airline coming from there was taking about two thousand pounds from Nigeria.
âWe charged Nigerians less than six hundred dollars to and fro. We went there and they tried to discourage us. They sent dogs after our aircraft to sniff at our pilots and at the end of the day, they stopped Air Peace from doing its walk-around on its aircraft, something that violates safety.
âThe rule of aviation is that when you take off and your aircraft leaves the ground for just two minutes if that plane wants to land, before that plane can take off again, it must do a walk around because anything could have hit the plane in transit.
âWe flew six hours into London but we were not allowed to go round our aircraft to know if it has been compromised. Thankfully, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, petitioned the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) over that.â
Activist Reacts
In reaction to this, Human right activist, Femi Falana, SAN, called for the immediate suspension of British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flight operations into Nigeria.
He stated that the suspension should be lifted only when Air Peace is allowed to also fly on the Lagos-London route in accordance with the provisions of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement, BASA, signed by Nigeria and United Kingdom.
He said: âAir Peace has proven it has the capacity to operate on international routes. The airline currently flies to China, Israel, India and South Africa among others using modern aircraft comparable to those of its foreign competitors.
âIf Air Peace is not allowed to fly to London, then British Airways and Virgin Atlantic should be stopped from flying to Nigeria. Air Peace has a fleet of modern long-haul and regional aircraft that can match those of other foreign airlines operating into Nigeria.â
Airline To Struggle For Relevance â Experts
Meanwhile, stakeholders have commended the airline on its milestone, stressing that Air Peace may struggle if government does not lend support.
According to a former military Commandant at the MMA, Capt. John Ojikutu, this is a good development for Air Peace. Securing this route as a private airline is never easy.
He said: âAir Peace flying to that route without government support will not provide for them the expected benefits. They will pay a lot of money as a private airline on that route.
âItâs sad that we have for too long not taken advantage of the location of Nigeria to be a middle hub for East and South Africa to the US and to some extent, the UK.
âRecently, South Africa Airways and Rwanda Air started planning flights to the US through some west Africa countries. Because we are not taking these advantage, other countries are taking them away from us. Has anyone in the administration of our government and the Agencies been sincere with the reasons for multiple destinations for the foreign airlines in Nigeria?
âAll these marketing gaps in our commercial aviation are what the foreign airlines are tapping from us. These are caused by those in the administration of our government and the management of the agencies and I call it Institutional Corruption.
âMany continental and regional airlines are going to come so long we are what we are everyone for his pocket, institutional corruption.â
Also, the Chairman, West Link Airlines, Capt. Ibrahim Mshelia, stated that âNigeria airlines have not been able to get connectivity to that route for a while, and Air Peace securing that route is an achievement.
âWe have not been respected as regards to BASA reciprocity. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic get 21 frequencies to Nigeria, and we had none.
âThe means that our governments have thrown us under the bus all these while.
âI believe that two things were responsible for the delay in reciprocity. In the case of Air Peace it is possible that they did not get the federal government support to fly that route.
âIn Nigeria, we are not growing with the rest of the world. Those in government are not doing the right things. Our problems are too many and weâre not working on getting things right."
FG Yet To Pay Air Peace $10m Debt
While speaking on other challenges, Onyema lamented that Nigerian airlines cannot obtain dollars even from the CBN, disclosing that Air Peace paid CBN naira to obtain about $14 million dollars for the maintenance of its 15 aircraft at maintenance facilities overseas but that money has not been made available to the airline since the past six months.
He also recalled that the federal government owed Air Peace about $10 million and also owed other Nigerian carriers that operated the Hajj service, noting that these debts impair the operations of the airline and others.
Onyema therefore urged CBN to provide the foreign exchange so that Air Peace could bring back its aircraft that were ferried overseas for maintenance.
âWe ferried 15 of our aircraft for maintenance overseas. We needed dollars to pay for the maintenance; so, we paid naira to CBN, which is equivalent of $14 million needed to pay and bring the aircraft back to Nigeria after the checks. We have not received this money. This is money we borrowed at 26 per cent interest rate but six months have passed and we are yet to get this money from CBN. The total debts we are expected to be paid to us from the CBN is $24 million. This is why we said that what we need is conducive environment and Nigerian airlines will blossom. If these monies are made available to us and other airlines, Nigerian carriers will do very well. Nigerian airlines have capacity, what we need is support from our government,â Onyema said.
Nigeria Airlines Have Capacity
Onyema further stated that contrary to what many in the industry think; Nigerian airlines have capacity, noting that for the first time in years Nigerian airlines are ordering brand new aircraft from the manufacturers.
He stated that Air Peace made firm order of 33 aircraft and purchase right of 17 aircraft, which brings the airlineâs total order to 50.
âThese include 15 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and MAX 10, firm order of 13 Embraer E195-E2 and purchase right of 17 of the same aircraft type and firm order of five Embraer E175 and delivery of these aircraft would start early next year in addition to the five brand new Embraer E195-E2 already delivered.
âThe jobs one small Nigerian airline provides are more than the jobs provided by all foreign airlines in Nigeria, so the federal government should deem it very important supporting Nigerian airlines,â he said.
