Australian wedding venues were preparing for a rush of couples eager to tie the knot after same-sex marriage was signed into Australian law Friday, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull already boasting several invites. The historic reform was given royal assent on Friday, the final step in a process that began with a national postal vote in September. "The act has now passed into Australian law," said Queen's representative, Governor-General Peter Cosgrove at a ceremony in Canberra on Friday. Gay couples who have already married overseas will have their unions officially recognised from Saturday, when the bill comes into full effect. Those wanting to wed can lodge a notice to marry Saturday, but will have to wait a calendar month before exchanging vows, meaning the first weddings are expected on January 9. All but four members of the 150-seat lower House of Representatives voted in support of marriage equality on Thursday, sparking jubilant scenes in parliament. Turnbull, a moderate who has long backed same-sex unions, spent Friday morning encouraging his fellow Australians to start making wedding preparations. "It is a big Australian hug for all same-sex couples, saying we love and respect you, now go out there and get married," he said. At least two Sydney councils promised free venues to host marriages as a gesture of solidarity with the LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer) communities. "This is an historic day in the struggle for civil rights in Australia," Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne said. "Council will make its facilities -- halls, community centres and parks -- available free of hire fees for 100 days for any same-sex couples wishing to get married." Ghanaian Dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale has claimed that there is a mad rush for his songs by Nigerians after attacking Wizkid. According to him, it openly showcases the support they have mounted for him against the ‘come closer’ hitmaker. Shatta Wale a fortnight ago stirred controversy in the industry when he claimed he does not see Nigerian artiste, Wizkid as a superstar. He later fired a warning shot to warn him and other artistes like Patoranking and Timaya not to ever step foot in Ghana. At the recently held ‘S Concert’ at the Accra Sports Stadium, Shatta slapped his bodyguard on stage; he received a lot of backlash from fans and industry players who deemed the gesture unnecessary. But according to Shatta Wale, he believes the brawl with Nigerians served as an advantage for him to penetrate into their music industry. In an interview with host Andy Dosty in Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the ‘Ayoo’ hitmaker said ‘Nigerians are now calling me. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first man ever to score in every Champions League group game - he managed nine in total - as Madrid edged Dortmund, who qualified for the Europa League nonetheless thanks to Apoel's defeat against Spurs. Madrid started really well against a Dortmund side struggling for form and configured in a now-unfamiliar 4-3-3 system. After eight minutes, Ronaldo and Isco combined, allowing Borja Mayoral to score his first Champions League goal, and shortly afterwards, Ronaldo set his new standard in suitable style, ripping home a curler into the far top corner. But bit by bit, Dortmund eased their way into the game, and Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang's goal was not a surprise, coming, as it did, after several warnings. That was just before half-time; just after half-time, he scored again, a delicious chip punishing Keylor Navas for saving his first effort. To their credit, Madrid did not sulk, but gradually turned up the pressure until Dortmund were pinned inside their own half, and eventually, on 80 minutes, Lucas Vasquez forced home the winner. Madrid, though, have work to do if they are to defend their title a second time, while Dortmund suggested they might just be refinding themselves; if they play in the Europa League the way they played tonight, they have a good chance of winning it. Firefighters tackling a fast-moving wildfire in southern California have said the blaze has jumped the main coastal highway and reached the Pacific Ocean, US media report. The fire, which ripped through Ventura County north of Los Angeles, triggered evacuation orders for some 150,000 people and has damaged 150 buildings. Authorities say some 12,000 structures remain threatened by the fire. Strong winds are expected to further hinder efforts to contain the blaze. "We are still in the middle of an aggressive and active firefight on the ground," a spokesman for the Ventura fire department, Robert Welsbie, said late on Tuesday. "If the winds pick up, we will face quite a challenge." Fire officials said a quarter of a million homes were without power and they feared many more buildings would be destroyed. It was revealed on Wednesday that the fire had crossed Highway 101, the main artery that runs through the states of California, Oregon, and Washington, reaching the Solimar Beach area. The road remains open but local officials have told motorists to take care. More than 1,000 firefighters have been battling the fires in the cities of Ventura and Santa Paula, some 70 miles (115km) north of Los Angeles. Residents of Santa Paula and Ventura received mandatory evacuation notices on their phones and from emergency workers going house to house. Los Angeles wildfires force thousands to evacuate Blaze rips through southern California The blaze, which has devastated more than 55,000 acres (22,000 ha), continues to be fanned by ferocious Santa Ana winds - which blow in from the California desert - and low humidity. Winds are forecast reach up to 70mph (115km/h) on Wednesday and remain strong throughout the week. One eyewitness in Ventura, Robin Andersen, said an area south of Highway 101 "looked like Armageddon", the LA Times reports.
