nairalanda1: It's good news, if the government is also prepared to
1. Let the sector charge a cost reflecitive tarrif
2. Enforce laws against power theft, and debts. I know say you must show face. IMF poster boy |
Politics › Re: 5 Strong Reasons Why I Support Atiku’s Position On Fuel Subsidy By PastorKay by Banadriy: 10:44am On Aug 25 |
nairalanda1: Well bringing in a subsidy would do the opposite of what you want.
See the electricity sector. A subsidy has been maintained on the electricity sector for decades, the APC government won't remove it at all...and the result is a sector that can barely manage to produce up to a third of the electricity NIgeria needs.
A subsidy on fuel would end the ability of the sector to make a profit, and lead to its downfall. That is what happened with the NNPC refineres. They were prevented from making a profit in the name of subsidy, and as a result could not fund running, expansion and upgrade costs at all atall, and whatever money was made from periodic partial removals of subsidy was spent on government bonanza projects. Result, we lost domestic refining and ended up throwing away foreign exchange...importing fuel AND subsidizing it.
If you want a subsidy, either do as they do in saner climes and pay the tax for it, or forget about it. Nothing in this world runs witout it making enough money. People want to be paid. IMF poster boy, well done oo. Only subsidy topic you dey strong |

nairalanda1: Stadium costs money to run. The only way to keep a stadium running very well is for the stadium to host as many events as possible for cash.
Also if our football league was profitable ( which means things like high entrance fees and high priced tickets, the stadium may make enough money to pay for its running costs
But unfortunately, nigeria Na poor country. Not very many people have the kind of disposable income to pay high prices for tickets and stuff. And your government budgets are enough to pay staff salaries and do little else. IMF poster boy, well done |

Business › Re: High Production Costs Make Nigerian Factories Uncompetitive — NSDC Boss by Banadriy: 9:08am On Jul 27 |
nairalanda1: When NIgerians do not pay a cost reflective tarrif , and refuse to pay a tax and hold their government to account, and support the corruption of those in power, this is the result.
No cost reflective tarrifs for power means that the power sector cannot improve services, and as such cannot eventually reduce costs.....It also means that people and entities have to pay for expensive generator power...which makes matters worse.
No tax...about 60% of the country, 99% of the rich, do not pay enough tax, income tax. That means that the government struggles to provide the kind of roads and railways needed to improve logistics costs
Corruption speaks for itself. It drives away investment and makes the cost of setting up a business harder.
And therein lies the issue.
Yes, when we didn't pay cost reflective tarrifs for telephony, phones were expensive. When we started doing so, within five to six years, telephony became cheaper. Somehow we don't seem to realise that we have to do the same for electric power...hence we end up paying the costs for it via generator.
Like I said, if you do not pay a cost reflective tarrif to the power sector, you will pay it to the generator and fuel station people...and solar people. At a much higher rate. I just do not understand your agenda on this platform. Can't you see the cost of power generation per kilowat in countries with higher minimum wage compared to nigeria? You would never talk about the politicians stealing this country to its knees. The subsidy removal you preached , what has it benefited the average nigerian? We just enriched the political class that's why you have the likes of wike taking a private jet to the UK ,oshimole and the likes of akpabio flying private jet recklessly. You have another agenda on this platform and I feel you are being sponsored by someone in the government |
