Nigeria the chaotic gem The basics of life should not be a criterion for opulence in a sane society. The rise in the unemployment rate to an alarming 33% is a saddening state for a country that is so rich in natural resources. It can be said that Nigeria is moving towards experiencing the distressing era of the Great depression. Constant power supply, security, and good food are a yardstick for living a luxury life in Nigeria. The per capita income of Nigeria is shrinking daily and the purchasing power parity is also posing a big challenge to the minimum wage earners and the average salary earners at large. The purpose of obtaining a degree is undermined daily in Nigeria and despite the country being blessed with so many natural resources, the most important resource however is still the human resource. The population below the poverty line as of 2020 was 40% according to Wikipedia and would see an upsurge before this year runs out. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Nigeria) Those given the mandate to represent the interest of the populace, enrich themselves stupendously and are unperturbed by the trend in the country. The political ideology of liberal democracy is no longer upheld. Nigeria should be the gem of Africa but it's in a state of chaos and needs every hand on deck to be salvaged. |
One of the major positive impacts of globalization on the Nigerian economy has been increased access to new markets, which has facilitated increased exports and foreign investment in the country. This has helped to stimulate economic growth and development in Nigeria, as well as create new job opportunities. For example, the oil and gas sector, which is a major contributor to the Nigerian economy, has benefited from increased foreign investment and access to international markets. However, globalization has also had negative impacts on the Nigerian economy. One major concern is income inequality, as some segments of the population, such as urban elites, have benefited more from economic growth and access to new opportunities than others. This has contributed to a widening gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria. Globalization has also led to the displacement of local industries by cheaper imports, which has resulted in job losses and reduced competitiveness for domestic producers. This has particularly affected sectors such as manufacturing, where local firms have struggled to compete with cheaper imports. In addition, globalization has contributed to environmental degradation in Nigeria, as the country has prioritized economic growth over environmental protection. This has led to problems such as air and water pollution, deforestation, and soil erosion, which have had negative impacts on both the environment and the health of the population. Overall, it is important for Nigeria to carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of globalization, and to take steps to address any negative impacts. This may involve implementing policies to promote economic growth and development, while also protecting the environment, promoting social justice, and preserving cultural values. It may also involve participating in international trade and investment negotiations, in order to secure more favorable terms and to ensure that the interests of Nigeria are taken into account. |
