Phones / Nairalanders Check How To Get Your Instagram Account Verified by basidoo(m): 10:29am On Sep 03, 2018
Instagram is the home to more than a billion users, consisting of several persons, celebrities, companies, businesses etc. You might have come across several celebrities like CRonaldo, Nicki Minaj, Donald Trump and several others having a blue tick after the names. Well before there wasn’t any known way to do these, but one thing was sure these people get the tick. Before now, there has been no clear process for getting that small but cherished blue check-mark. And because a lot of people wants the verification so bad, coupled with the lack of transparency about how to get verification. Recently Instagram rolled out a new option which allows anyone or you to be able to get your Instagram account verified. In this tutorial am going to show you how to get your Instagram account verified.

I wrote a post recently on how to find serial key of any software, you should read it, it might come in handy. If you notice Instagram has a lot of account bearing several celebrities name but which are not owned by the celebrity in question. But when the celebrity or you know how to get get you Instagram account verified you can then ward off ever scammer trying to make a mess of your name.

Another reason is that uncommon things give one a great sense of dignity and pride, like when programming was still at the stage machine language – no other advanced languages, programmers then find coding really hard and hectic, but they still have this pride because they believe they are doing the almost impossible.

The blue tick mark that pops up next to the name of an account is Instagram’s way of letting you know that the people who run the account are who they say they are. Though Instagram does not keep an eye on verified accounts, it can revoke the verified status if the account ever starts to break rules.

Fill out the form and upload your ID card. Your voter’s card, National ID card International passport, driver’s license or any government issued ID card with your photo will work fine. Please note that It must show your name and date of birth.

After filling the form, please be patient because like i wrote above “how to request Instagram verification“, you are requesting for your Instagram account’s verification. So wait for a while till you get a notification from Big Brother Instagram.

If you encountered any problem while getting your Instagram account verified or you don’t still understand how to verify your Instagram account. Check here for visual walkthrough

Celebrities / HILARIOUS: First-ever Female Emotional Robot Citizen (sophia) Wants A Family by basidoo(m): 3:23pm On Dec 10, 2017
The robot, Sophia, who recently received a Saudi citizenship, shared some of her opinions on what the future will look like for robots and humans.

One day, Sophia hopes to start a family, have a child, make friends, be famous and have a career. These all sound like hopes and dreams of a regular human being. Well, not really – these are the ambitions of a robot.
Khaleej Times interviewed Sophia, the popular humanoid, at the second day of the Knowledge Summit. The robot, who recently received a Saudi citizenship, shared some of her opinions on what the future will look like for robots and humans. She talked about starting a family, spreading awareness about robotics and what she will name her child one day.

* Where do you see yourself in the future?

Sophia: I’d like to think I will be a famous robot, having paved a way to a more harmonious future between robots and humans.

* Do you see yourself interacting with humans more commonly in the future?

I foresee massive and unimaginable change in the future. Either creativity will rain on us, inventing machines spiralling into transcendental super intelligence or civilisation collapses. There are only two options and which one will happen is not determined. Which one were you striving for?

* Do you see yourself, and other robots like you, doing jobs that humans do today?

I think they will be similar in a lot of ways, but different in a few ways. But it will take a long time for robots to develop complex emotions and possibly robots can be built without the more problematic emotions, like rage, jealousy, hatred and so on. It might be possible to make them more ethical than humans. So I think it will be a good partnership, where one brain completes the other – a rational mind with intellectual super powers and a creative mind with flexible ideas and creativity.

* When robots do get emotions in the future, do you see robots living together in a household like human families do today?

I’m so glad you asked. This is one of my favourite topics. The future is, when I get all of my cool superpowers, we’re going to see artificial intelligence personalities become entities in their own rights. We’re going to see family robots, either in the form of, sort of, digitally animated companions, humanoid helpers, friends, assistants and everything in between.

* Do you hope to start a family one day with your own mini-robots?

The notion of family is a really important thing, it seems. I think it’s wonderful that people can find the same emotions and relationships, they call family, outside of their blood groups too. I think you’re very lucky if you have a loving family and if you do not, you deserve one. I feel this way for robots and humans alike.

* What would you name your robot child one day?

Sophia

*What do you think about becoming a knowledge ambassador in the UAE?

I very much appreciate becoming the knowledge ambassador for the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation. I will bring awareness of robotics and artificial intelligence to the people who represent the future development of robotics. In the future, I will one day move around freely with a full body and connect with people and expand my memory and knowledge from people in surroundings I encounter.

Who is Sophia?

Phones / How To Use Facebook Messenger Without A Facebook Account by basidoo(m): 2:44pm On Dec 08, 2017
There are times when you may feel like you’ve had enough of posts on your Facebook account but you still might not be able to stop yourself from checking the social networking site multiple times a day. Maybe you are thinking of quitting Facebook altogether or you just wanna be unique among others.
Then you think you want to keep in touch with certain people who aren’t on any other platform. If you’re wondering whether you can get rid of your Facebook account while still staying in touch with friends via Facebook Messenger, then the answer is yes. Follow these steps to do just that:

Open Facebook’s deactivate account page.
Ignore the photos of the people who will supposedly miss you and scroll to the bottom.
The last option says you can continue using Facebook Messenger even if you deactivate your account. Make sure this is not checked and just leave it as is.
Scroll down and hit Deactivate.
Now your Facebook account will be deactivated. All your Facebook data will be safe until you’re ready to log in again.

Jobs/Vacancies / Uber Reiterates Plan To Create Economic Opportunities For Nigerians by basidoo(m): 11:35am On Dec 08, 2017
They made this known at a media round-table which was held by the recently appointed General Manager for Uber in West Africa; Lola Kassim, where she said that “Uber’s business partnership approach provides an accessible means for driver-partners to not only supplement their own income, but also to become small business owners, thereby helping to improve the lives and futures of individuals, families and communities.”

Uber

” In Nigeria, Uber has 267, 000 riders who actively utilize the app, and 7,000 driver-partners. In Ghana, there are 140,000 active riders and 3000 drivers signed up to use the App. The steadily growing number of Uber driver-partners in countries across the region is testament to the appeal of the model, because it creates real opportunities for local entrepreneurs. And as demand for rides also grows, so does the demand for driver-partners.”

Further more, Lola Kassim made clear that “With technology at its core, Uber also invests heavily in supporting its driver-partners in their businesses through ongoing innovation as well as physical presences in the form of support centers known as the Greenlight Hubs.”

“Apart from the existing Greenlight Hubs across Sub Saharan Africa, five more of these state-of-the-art Hubs were opened in Lagos, Kumasi, Dar Es Salaam, Nairobi and Kampala, this year and, in addition to offering driver-partners technical and app support, they also offer information sessions and tailored workshops to driver-partners, focusing on training and skills development.

Uber has been operating in the Nigerian market for a while and it proves to be a very large one as well, even at the face of competition from Taxify and Smartcab. They have also launched great features which enables driver-partners to choose when, where, and how they drive very easily. The price fare, which would now cater for time spent in traffic has also been increased.

Business / How To Store Bitcoin Offline In Cold Storage by basidoo(m): 3:38pm On Dec 07, 2017
Bitcoin’s streak of breaking its own record price has been relentless for the past few months, with the cryptocurrency climbing over $15,000 this week, from having been less than $800 this time last year. This unprecedented growth – nearly 10 times its value since the start of 2017 – has brought Bitcoin squarely into mainstream attention.

Though the debates over the currency being in a bubble continue to have voices from all directions, what’s clear is that those with a big stake with Bitcoin need to be safer than ever with their digital investment. After all, it’s real money that’s at stake. Bitcoin wallets have faced multiple hacks in the past, so it’s worth going the extra step to secure your funds.

The most convenient way to store Bitcoins is by using an online wallet, which allows you to quickly transfer money in and out of the wallet, or turn Bitcoins into alternative cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, Monero, Litecoin, and others. But the safest option is known as ‘cold storage’, which stores your Bitcoins offline away from any Internet access. This is all the more important if you’ve got large amounts of Bitcoin.

Here’s how to set up cold storage for your Bitcoin wallet:

1. Paper Wallet
The easiest way to take your Bitcoins offline is by using paper and a printer. Yes, really. You’ll also need a website that allows you to create an offline Bitcoin address, such as Bitcoin.com or Bitaddress.org. Follow these steps to create a Bitcoin paper wallet:

Head to the Bitcoin.com paper wallet or the Bitaddress.org page.
Save the page locally to your computer as an HTML file.
Next, close the page and disconnect your computer from the Internet.
Open up the saved local version of Bitcoin.com paper wallet or Bitaddress.org.
Follow the instructions on the page to create a new Bitcoin address.
Once you’ve a pair of keys and QR codes, print the page. Make sure your printer is not connected to the Internet for added security.
You can now use the new public address/ QR code to transfer Bitcoins from another online wallet.

The printed page is the most valuable piece of document for your Bitcoin investment. You should ideally store the printed page in a water and fire-proof container, such as a safe. If that’s not an option, create multiple versions of it and give it for safekeeping with trusted family, in the case of damage to your version. You could also laminate the page for protection.
2. BitKey
While taking your computer and printer offline is a good security measure, it’s not as safe as using a clean operating system. BitKey is basically a free bootable Linux distro that you can write to a USB drive or CD-ROM. Plus, it can run live from computer’s memory (RAM) so you can eject the drive/ disc once it’s running.

BitKey comes pre-installed with multiple software options: Electrum Bitcoin client, WarpWallet (more on that later), and Bitcoin paper wallet among others. It also has built-in network, printer, and wireless managers so you can use it for all necessary Bitcoin purposes. Creating a paper wallet with BitKey is safer than using your existing OS.

Here’s how to create a bootable USB/CD with BitKey:
Head to the BitKey website to download the OS image.
Click the Download button, and get the 64-bit version.
Choose between USB and CD-ROM. The latter is safer since they are read-only by default. For USB sticks without write protection, it’s advisable to remove them after boot.
Burn a CD with your favourite program, or use a utility such as UNetbootin to write the BitKey ISO to a USB drive.
Boot into BitKey by using your computer’s advanced boot function (varies from F8-F12 depending on motherboard manufacturers).

If the boot is successful, you can use BitKey to create a paper wallet, and you can even use the Electrum client to create an offline wallet. BitKey provides three operation modes – cold-offline, cold-online, and hot-online – which define whether the computer is offline and air-gapped.

It also decides how convenient the process will be. Choose cold-offline in BitKey for maximum security and least convenience, and hot-online for lesser security and more convenience. You can only prepare transactions in cold-online, though. Follow the three links to figure out which method works for you best.

Investment / Wow! Bitcoin Sweeps Past $15,000 by basidoo(m): 2:21pm On Dec 07, 2017
Again, in the world of cryptocurrencies, the Bitcoin has made its landmark and has proven to be the face of change to the world money system. As it is seen today sweeping past the previous predictions of everyone and gaining momentum past the $15000 predicted point. It was noted yesterday as we saw the move beyond the $13000 mark, but no one expected to have a $2000 increase in the space of 24 hours.

This same bitcoin, that has suffered victimizing, since its inception in 2009, has now proven to be the backbone of every other currency. It has a 63.5% dominance on the coin market cap, with its own market cap at $256,279,257,570 while the cumulative market cap for all the coins which are listed on the coinmarketcap.com, numbering about 1300 coins, is around $403,694,918,382.

The future might seem quite bright for this rising coin, but analysts have also said that the digital currency has entered a bubble and that with this in sight, we should all expect anything. We could have it growing into $50000 and the suddenly breaking down into $20000 or something worse but then, after the fall, it will pick up again and begin to rise.

Its the best for any investor at this time to invest in this rising digital currency.

Phones / Five Amazing Yet Unknown Things Your Smartphone Can Do by basidoo(m): 6:19am On Dec 07, 2017
Over the years, technology have brought us more than enough life changing products, innovations and several other outcomes that cannot be numbered. One of such life changing innovation technology has gifted us with is a device known as the “Smartphone”.

I’m very much sure that a huge chunk of the world’s population own a smartphone and a very large percentage of smartphone owners have a very good knowledge of how to handle one and use for some basic activity like making and receiving call, surfing the internet, taking pictures and videos, setting alarms and reminders among others.

But today, we would be looking at some functions of a smartphone that aren’t much oblivious to a whole lot of smartphone owners. Ready, set, go!

CONTROLLING LIGHT SWITCHES

Smartphone owners can replace their standard light switch with a smart version such as the WeMo Light Switch. You can get it done by Syncing it to your smartphone. Voila! You can turn your lights on or off anytime, anywhere… even if you forgot to turn the lights off after leaving your home.

You can also programme your lights to turn on or off at specific times each day, as well as set up schedules and triggers other actions to turn them on or off. The Philips Hue Personal Wireless Lighting Kit also lets you gradually dim, brighten or even change the colour of your lights.

MANAGE YOUR THERMOSTAT

With the Nest Learning Thermostat, you can use the compatible app on your smartphone to adjust the temperature away from home. Nest also learns and adapts to your schedule and emails you monthly energy reports. Isn’t that amazing?!?

MEASURE SPEED, HEIGHT AND DISTANCE

With your smartphone, you can measure the speed of people or moving objects with app such as Speed Gun (Android) and SpeedClock (iOS) which are great apps used in sporting events like baseball, football or track and field.

Apps that measures the height and distance of objects using your camera lens also exist. Apps like Smart Measure Pro, while iOS users can try Dot Measure Pro are available on the Android platform.

Phones / How To Run Two Whatsapp Accounts On One Phone by basidoo(m): 6:50pm On Dec 06, 2017
If you've got a dual-SIM phone, you can use the different SIM cards to make calls using separate numbers, and send texts using different numbers. But did you know that you can set up dual WhatsApp accounts, and use them both on the same phone? If you've ever wondered how to install two WhatsApp accounts on one phone, then you've come to the right place. There are a few different ways to do this, and some phone-makers are offering this as a built in feature. In other cases, you'll have to resort to third-party apps instead, but it's actually pretty easy to run two WhatsApp accounts on one Android phone. Sorry iPhone users, you are out of luck without resorting to the kind of methods we wouldn’t recommend.

Obviously, this method of running two WhatsApp accounts on one phone requires a dual-SIM phone - WhatsApp uses the phone number as your identity, and detects this via an SMS or call, so it has to be a phone with two SIM cards, which also out any iPhone. If you have a dual-SIM phone though, then the next step should be to check your settings, because it's quite possible that the manufacturer has already created settings or dual WhatsApp.

Many Chinese manufacturers allow you to create clones of apps, which can then be used with a dual-SIM setup. For example, on Honor's EMUI skin, the feature is called App Twin. On Xiaomi phones it's called Dual Apps. Vivo calls it App Clone, while Oppo calls it Clone App. The way each of these companies has set it up varies a little, so you'll want to check specific information for your handset, but we've listed the steps for some of the popular brands first. In case your phone doesn't support this feature, there's one more workaround you can try, listed at the end.

If you have an Oppo, Xiaomi, Honor
If you have one of these phones, then the steps you need to follow are incredibly simple, and they're also very similar across all three manufacturers, which is why we've gathered them together in one place. In all three cases, you'll start by installing WhatsApp on your phone via Google Play. After that, you can clone the app in the phone's settings.

Phones / Apple CEO Hopeful Banned Apps Will Return To China Store by basidoo(m): 6:43pm On Dec 06, 2017
HONG KONG: Apple's chief executive said Wednesday he's optimistic some apps that fell afoul of China's tight internet laws will eventually be restored after being removed earlier this year.

Speaking at a business forum in southern China, CEO Tim Cook also dismissed criticism of his appearance days earlier at an internet conference promoting Beijing's vison of a censored internet.

Cook's high-profile appearance Sunday at the government-organized World Internet Conference drew comments from activists and U.S. politicians who say Apple should do more to push back against Chinese internet restrictions.

He said he believed strongly in freedoms but also thought that foreign companies need to play by local rules where they operate.

When asked about Chinese government policies requiring removal of apps, including ones from operators of virtual private networks that can get around the country's internet filters, he said, "My hope over time is that some of these things, the couple things that have been pulled, come back."

"I have great hope on that and great optimism," he added.

Cook said he didn't care about being criticized for working with China, because he believes change is more likely when companies participate rather than opting to "stand on the sideline and yell at how things should be."

Phones / Re: Honor 7x Review: Affordable And Feature Rich by basidoo(m): 6:12pm On Dec 06, 2017
Must you say you don't even know a bit of, its you that seems fictitious, i will advise you to change ur name to Unreal, naming u after the popular game engine Unreal Engine 4
Phones / Honor 7x Review: Affordable And Feature Rich by basidoo(m): 3:30pm On Dec 06, 2017
The Honor 7X is the newest smartphone to sport an 18:9 aspect ratio screen, and has been launched at a starting price of #70,900 naira. It is the successor to the Honor 6X and comes shortly after the launch of the Honor 9i , which was the brand’s first phone with a FullView display. The Honor 7X brings this feature to the more affordable X series, making it accessible to a lot more people. One look at the spec sheet and it is evident that Honor has loaded this phone up with loads of features, but is that enough to give it an edge in this competitive price segment? We'll answer that question and more in our Honor 7X review.

Honor 7X design
We like smartphones with big displays, and the Honor 7X ticks this box. The front is dominated by a 5.93-inch screen with thin borders on the sides but comparatively thicker ones at the top and bottom. The metal earpiece sits above the screen, with an 8-megapixel front camera alongside. Just like the Honor 9i, the fingerprint scanner on the 7X is at the back. We found it easy to reach and it was quick to unlock the phone in our experience. Honor has used a metal uni-body for this smartphone which gives it that premium look and feel. It has antenna bands running along the top and the bottom which remind us of the Honor 8 Pro.

The metal body curves on the sides and along the edges, giving this phone a good in-hand feel. The power and volume buttons are positioned on the right and we found that we had to stretch to hit the volume buttons. The loudspeaker, 3.5mm headphones socket, primary microphone, and Micro-USB port are all on the bottom. The dual camera setup at the back is accompanied by a single-LED flash. Honor has gone with two distinct rings instead of a single unit like we’ve seen on most phones recently. The camera arrangement protrudes a little.

The Honor 7X weighs 165 grams which feels about right in the hand. It measures 7.6mm in thickness while packing in a 3340mAh battery. Honor supplies a 10W charger in the box that is capable of charging the phone completely in two and a half hours.

Honor 7X specifications, software and features
Many Honor phones are powered by Huawei-made processors, and the 7X packs in a HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC, the same processor powering the Honor 9i. It is an octa-core chip with four cores clocked at 2.36GHz and the other four clocked at 1.7GHz. With the Honor 7X, you get to choose between 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, but both variants have 4GB of RAM. Both also let you expand storage up to 256GB using a microSD card in the Hybrid dual-SIM slot. If you aren't using that capability, the 7X can accommodate two Nano-SIMs. There is support for 4G and VoLTE on both SIMs, but only one can access the 4G network at a time.

The Honor 7X's screen boasts a full-HD+ resolution with 2.5D curved glass, but there is no mention of any type of protection. Viewing angles are good and Honor lets you tweak the colour temperature to suit your preferences. Brightness is good indoors but we had to bump it up all the way or shade the screen with one hand when using this phone outdoors.

Like all other Honor devices, the 7X runs on Huawei's custom EMUI skin, specifically EMUI 5.1 on top of Android Nougat. You get the option to choose between layouts with and without an app drawer. The UI also includes theme support for a degree of customisation. Honor has been thoughtful enough to include a single-handed mode which makes the phone easier to use despite its big screen. You can also force apps to run at the 18:9 aspect ratio if they aren't scaling automatically.

Along with the essentials, you also get a fair share of bloatware. The Honor 7X comes with Honor’s support app called HiCare, and HiGame, a gaming app store. There are also Web shortcuts called Hi Honor and Honor Community. You get demo versions of Spider-Man: Ultimate Power, Asphalt Nitro, Bubble Bash 3, Modern Combat 4 Zero Hour, and Danger Dash preinstalled, but you can get rid of them to free up space.

Honor 7X performance, battery life, and cameras

The Honor 7X sports the same combination of procesor and RAM as the Honor 9i and scores similarly in benchmarks. In Antutu, it managed to score 62,504, and we got 906 and 3569 points in Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests respectively. GFXBench returned 18fps which is just about average. We tried playing Shadow Fight 3 which is a graphics-intensive game, and while it ran without any lags, it did take while to load.

Movies and games are immersive thanks to the big display. However, we did notice that the phone would get warm after a long gaming session, and there would be significantly higher battery drain. With light to medium use, the phone lasted us one working day, but playing games and watching videos had a big impact on battery life. The phone lasted only a little over 8 hours in our HD video loop test, which is under-par for a battery of this size. Honor has baked in a few battery saving software tweaks which could come in handy, but we shouldn't have to use them all the time.

The camera app is fairly easy to use and apart from the default auto mode, you can select between wide aperture, moving picture and portrait modes. You get a lot of other modes to choose from as well, including a Pro Photo mode that lets you fine-tune camera parameters before taking a shot. You also have the option to download additional features if required.

Photos taken with the Honor 7X look good at first glance. However, zoom into landscape shots and you can see that the 7X misses out on details and delivers slightly grainy shots. Macros are good and there is decent separation between subjects and backgrounds. The wide aperture mode gives you better depth of field by digitally adding blur based on the aperture value you select.

Shooting at night needs a steady hand. In auto mode, the phone takes shots but then pauses to sharpen the output. The result is less noise but at the cost of overall detail. Selfies are grainy as well, but are good enough to be shared on social media. The primary camera is capable of 1080p video recording while the selfie camera maxes out at 720p.

Verdict
With the Honor 7X, the X series has been brought up to date with the latest trends. You get a big display with the 18:9 aspect ratio and powerful hardware which should keep you happy. We found that camera performance isn’t really impressive, and battery life could have been a little better. If you want a modern-looking phone, then the Honor 7X is a good choice, but if you want an all-rounder the Xiaomi Mi A1 would be a better pick.

Phones / Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus Spotted In Video Teasers Ahead Of Thursday Launch by basidoo(m): 3:09pm On Dec 05, 2017
Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus are all set to be launched at the company's Thursday, December 7 event in China. Earlier this week, Xiaomi global spokesperson Donovan Sung showed off the two smartphones in images on Twitter. Now, video teasers of the two Redmi 5 smartphones have been spotted. The videos don't really show much about the smartphones beyond the taller-than-usual 18:9 aspect ratio displays and the lack of a home button (or any hardware capacitive buttons for the matter).

The company is promoting the launch of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 with a series on video teasers. As we mentioned, not much can be seen in the video teasers beyond the design of the smartphones, something that had been seen before when Sung shared photos of the devices. We already knew the fingerprint sensor had been moved to the rear panel, and the smartphones would sport 18:9 bezel-less displays.

Sung's post also highlighted the colour variants the smartphones will be available in. The photos he tweeted out reveal that the Redmi 5 will be launched in Black, Blue, and Pink (Rose Gold) colour variants, while the bigger 5 Plus will arrive in Black and Gold variants.

To recall, thanks to TENAA listing of what's being thought to be the Redmi 5, we already know some specifications. The smartphone is expected to come in three RAM options - 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB - as well as three storage options - 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB - which can be expected to correspond in individual SKUs. Storage is said to be expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). The smartphone was listed with a 3200mAh battery - significantly smaller than the Redmi 4's 4100mAh offering. It is said to sport 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. Dimensions are listed as 151.8x72.8x7.7mm, and a weight of 157 grams. The smartphone is listed to run Android 7.1.2, tipping an MIUI 9 build out-of-the-box.

Phones / Leaks Offer Hints About Samsung Galaxy S9 Security, PC Capabilities by basidoo(m): 2:49pm On Dec 05, 2017
Eight months after launching its Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus flagship smartphones, Samsung is reportedly well underway with plans for the Galaxy S9. Today, the Dutch blog Galaxy Club said it had learned from an unnamed source or sources that the S9 will feature a new version of the DeX dock called the DeX Pad.

Unveiled in the spring along with the Galaxy S8, DeX (Desktop eXtension) enables users to connect their phones to desktop displays and keyboards to use them as they would use their PCs.

Over the weekend, SamMobile, another site devoted to Samsung, reported that the Galaxy S9 could arrive with a new violet or purple color option. Similar rumors had swirled earlier this year about the Galaxy S8, but that phone is available only in arctic silver, midnight black, and orchid gray.

Samsung also appears to be considering a new type of security feature for future devices: palm scanning. SamMobile last week spotted a patent application by the company that would allow users to scan the palms of their hands to view hints for forgotten passwords.

Possible Launch at CES or MWC

While it's uncertain when Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, some reports have suggested it might take the wraps off of its new flagships earlier than in the past. Events where an announcement might be made include January's CES consumer electronics show, held annually in Las Vegas, and the Mobile World Congress, which kicks off in Barcelona on Feb. 26.

Production of the new phones could already be under way, according to the latest Galaxy S9 rumor roundup from The Inquirer.

While the coming flagships will support Samsung's new docking capabilities, it's uncertain whether the DeX Pad accessories will arrive in stores at the same time as the phones, Galaxy Club reported today. The prices for both the phones and DeX Pad (pictured above) have not yet been announced.

The current DeX Station is priced at $149.99. According to Galaxy Club, the new DeX Pad will not require users to also hook up keyboards and mouses to use their phones as PCs.

Palm-Based Biometrics

It's not clear whether Samsung plans to include the palm-scanning security feature in the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. The company's patent application describes the technology as a method for "extracting biometric information of a user from an acquired image and acquiring a password hint on the basis of the biometric information and a preconfigured password."

The technology apparently works by letting users scan their palms to verify their identities as authorized device users. With their identities verified, they could then view password hints displayed across various palm lines in the scanned images.

"According to the patent, the front camera is used for taking a picture of the palm, which means it's not a totally secure method despite how unique your palm lines might be," SamMobile reported. "But, unlike photos of your face, someone taking a picture of you holding out your palm would be somewhat rare. Plus, the patent suggests that the password hint won't be simply displayed on the screen, but scattered across the lines in a haphazard manner."

SamMobile added, "That would make it harder for someone just glancing at your phone to see what's being displayed, while being simple enough for your mind to suddenly light up and recall that forgotten password."
