We the people of the Niger Delta in the UK have agreed to come together under the umbrella of the Niger Delta Solidarity Group to work together towards creating awareness in the western world, especially in the UK, about the conflict in our homeland.

We wish to engage in a campaign to actively inform the media,
parliamentarians, western governments and also disseminate information to the general public about the atrocities being committed in our homeland by the Nigerian military authorities.

We owe it to our fathers, mothers and children at home to use our
privileged position of living in the UK, far away from the media black- out, oppression and military controls to bring the plight of our oppressed people to the attention of the world.

Together we can help to bring an immediate cessation of the ongoing military onslaught on our people, and contribute to positive change and a peaceful resolution of the Niger Delta crisis.

Lets not forget that as well as the military activities; there is a
propaganda war that is being waged against our people. The federal government and it’s state organs are painting a picture to the world that the on going campaign is against criminals and militants, but we know that it is our fathers, mothers and children that are being massacred.

1.We have agreed to hold public demonstrations at the Nigerian high commission in London to protest against the current and on-going military onslaught against our people. Date, time and place will be communicated to you as soon as possible.

2. A petition will be sent to the United Nation, British Prime
Minister, UK House of parliament, European Union office in London and other international organizations.

3. We will be organizing a church service to pray for the souls of all the innocent people that have lost their lives in our homeland in the present and past military campaigns by the Nigerian military. Please find details below:

We are calling on ALL sons and daughters of the Niger Delta region and all others who oppose the brutal and atrocious actions of the Nigerian authorities to join us in this campaign. Let us put our differences to rest and come together for the common good of our shared heritage, people and land.

A centenarian and an octogenarian were shot dead as the Joint Military Task Force [JTF] in the troubled Niger Delta region intensified the onslaught on Ijaw communities suspected to have provided a safe haven for fleeing militants at the weekend.

In a surprise aerial and amphibious attac on Benikurukuru and Ekoteama communities located on the fringes of the Escravos River, over half of the structures were allegedly reduced to rubble as JTF troops using a helicopter gunship and several gunboats launched a deadly offensive, which began at about 10.am and lasted for three hours.

Although, the exact figure of casualties could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, a 102-year-old man whose name was given as Pa Ziten Juweigha was allegedly consumed by a ferocious bomb. Several of other villagers including an 85-year-old man also allegedly lost their lives at Ekoteama village, apart from those said to be missing.


Daily Sun learnt that the late Pa Ziten had miraculously escaped penultimate Friday from Oporoza, his hometown, during the initial raid on the community, and had sought refuge at Dabiogbene, a fishing camp close to Benikurukuru. Ironically, he was caught down in cold blood in his place of refuge, aborting his spirited effort for survival.


Eyewitness accounts said the centenarian’s body was shattered as a bomb exploded close to his temporary place of abode, a make-shift thatched hut where he breathed his last in the early hours of Saturday. Described as perhaps the oldest man in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Pa Ziten’s remains were still said to be lying at the scene of the incident as at Sunday morning.


Sources said the killings came barely 72 hours after an unidentified octogenarian was shot dead when JTF troops revisited Oporoza community to raze down what was left of the houses and other property after the earlier attack on Friday, May 15.


Meanwhile, natives of Benikurukuru and other neighbouring villages are pointing the finger at Chevron, a multi-national American oil firm over Saturday’s attack, an allegation vehemently denied by a senior official of the oil company when Daily Sun sought his reaction on the development.


“It is not true that part of the troops took off from Chevron to attack Benikurukuru and other communities as it is being alleged. It is also not true that Chevron had marked down some communities as being problematic to its operations. As far as I know, we are a responsible corporate citizen and would not go out of our way to inflict pain and sorrow on innocent villagers,” the official who would not want his name in print told Daily Sun on telephone on Sunday.

When you call this meeting, at least have the honesty to admit to yourselves that most of the oil spillage in recent years have been caused by the activities of bunkerers and  pipeline thieves. Look at the first photo showing the gas flare to see women voluntarily placing food stuff near flares to dry. Ask yourselves why ND communities often demand huge sums from oil companies to gain access to spill sites to do cleanup, even when it's clearly a case of sabotage.

Two pages of photos and you still have no words to speak against the state and local governments that fritter away monies intended for development of the region.

I'm asking because people cant survive on a consistent diet of that kind of polluted water, for any length of time. Where do they get the regular water they use everyday from?

I believe steps are being taken towards eliminating the gas flaring though I'm not sure how much of it has been implemented.
If you have any current pictures of the gas flares, kindly post them so everyone can see if anything is really being done about this problem.

A recent oil spill in Ogoniland. Nothing has been done about it

It describes the situation in the Niger Delta; an environment in which the concept of oil has taken on a definition that deeply, deeply disturbs me. The above picture, see those tanks? A forest used to be there that would shield the villagers from wind and rain. Their homes with thatched straw roofs used to last twice as long as they do now. Fish don’t breed in the waters anymore. Instead frozen fish is brought in which costs $1 a fish. These people who used to feed themselves live on less than $1 a day. Acid rain falls from polluted skies and kilometres of pipes slash deep, black gashes across the wetlands inland. In its 50 year history, analysts estimate on average an oil leak has occured every single day. Meanwhile, government officials send their kids to exclusive schools in London and sit on leather couches enjoying air conditioned comforts… And as I write this, I know I will be filling up with fuel once more within the next 7 days; Fuel that has come from here and poisons these people’s lives

That was former Oil Minister, Professor Tam David-West, deploring the current military action by the Federal Government against insurgents in the Niger Delta.

The Armed Forces had launched the latest onslaught, which had sacked about four Ijaw communities, displaced thousands, with hundreds of people reportedly killed in reprisal against militants’ sinking of two gunboat in Delta State last week.

But objecting to the use of brute force, David-West warned that it would not only end in futility, but was bound to have adverse implications for the nation.

this is not an Ijaw issue, it is a Niger Delta issue affecting all the nationalities in the region. So long as we continue to feed into the divide and rule tactics we will remain "victims". The whole region is under attack and we all need to recognise that and take the initiative to stand as one.

THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE NIGER DELTA

More than 6,000 oil spills have been recorded since 1976.

Less than 25% of spills are remediated.

Many Niger Delta residents suffer from oil poisoning.

More gas is flared in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world.

Over 250 toxins have been identified in gas flare emissions.

Breathing particulate from flaring is linked to disease and premature death.

Potable water in the Niger Delta creeks region is virtually nonexistent due to oil contamination.

Oil pollution has killed off fish, fouled the soil and caused wildlife to vanish.

Handmade fishing nets can become useless in 6 months from acid rain caused by flaring.

Acid rain acidifies bodies of water, damages vegetation and decays building materials.
