Investment › Re: Why Dangote Refinery Ipo Is Not Exciting To Me by Bayoonanuga: 9:43am On Sep 15
Stop comparing other countries to Nigeria
ComradeIbrahimA:
WHY DANGOTE REFINERY IPO IS NOT EXCITING TO ME

First, congratulations to Aliko Dangote on taking Dangote Refinery to the Nigerian capital market. It is a historic achievement and I commend the vision behind it. The IPO gives ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to own a piece of a major industrial asset.

BUT AS AN OIL, GAS & ENERGY EXPERT, I AM NOT YET EXCITED.

Why?

Because Nigerians are still paying heavily for energy while earning some of the lowest wages among comparable oil-producing countries.

LOOK AT THE NUMBERS:

🇮🇷 IRAN
Minimum wage: ≈ ₦145,000–₦165,000/month
Petrol: heavily subsidised; standard quota ≈ ₦20/L
Minimum wage can buy about 8250+ litres.

🇱🇾 LIBYA
Minimum wage: ≈ ₦210,000/month
Petrol: ≈ ₦32/L
Minimum wage can buy about 6,500+ litres.

🇸🇦 SAUDI ARABIA
Minimum wage: ≈ ₦1.4 million/month for Saudi private-sector workers
Petrol: ≈ ₦820/L
Minimum wage can buy about 1,700 litres.

🇳🇬 NIGERIA
Minimum wage: ₦70,000/month
Petrol: ≈ ₦1,290/L nationally; Dangote's current gantry price is ₦1,350/L, with some retail stations around ₦1,395/L.
₦70,000 buys only about 54 litres at ₦1,290/L.

And it doesn't end with PMS.

Nigeria: Diesel ≈ ₦1,950/L.
Kerosene: ≈ ₦1,765/L.
LPG: ≈ ₦1,000/kg.

This is my problem.

What exactly are we celebrating if the ordinary Nigerian is still bleeding from the cost of energy?

I congratulate Dangote, but I also question the continuous fuel price increases. His refinery has raised its petrol gantry price four times since August 21 — from ₦1,165 to ₦1,350/L, a 15.9% increase in just 22 days.

And I equally question NNPC and government policy.

We are an oil-producing nation. We should be building an energy system that makes electricity, transportation, production and cooking affordable — because cheaper energy means cheaper food, cheaper transportation, cheaper manufacturing and ultimately a better standard of living.

THE FIGHT IS NOT AGAINST DANGOTE.
THE FIGHT IS AGAINST EXPENSIVE ENERGY AND LOW PURCHASING POWER.

If we genuinely want Nigerians to live better, raise wages AND reduce the cost of energy.

That is how we build a stronger economy.

That is how we create prosperity.

That is how we give the Nigerian worker dignity.

Congratulations, Dangote, on the IPO. But Nigerians need more than shares. Nigerians need affordable energy.

Are you in Germany now
Tunzdomains:
Dear Nairalanders and well-meaning Nigerians on this great platform,I am writing this to cry out for assistance and to create a public record regarding a transaction with a well-known moniker on this platform, Bigkoko, who also runs Calm Travels. In June 2024, I contacted him based on a thread he posted here advertising services for a German Sponsorship Letter (Verpflichtungserklärung). After our discussions, I paid him the sum of €1,000 (One Thousand Euros) in July 2024 to execute the service.Unfortunately, he failed to secure the sponsorship letter. After he confirmed he could not deliver, I requested a full refund.
The Issue:Since March 2025, he has given me a continuous series of broken promises, shifting dates, and unfulfilled deadlines to return my money.
At one point, he completely changed his WhatsApp number, leaving me unable to contact him for months until I managed to source his new number back on this platform.
To date, he is still holding onto my €1,000 and giving endless excuses.I have complete records of our WhatsApp conversations spanning from 2024 to present, bank proofs of payment, and all relevant transaction details. My Request:I am appealing to the Nairaland community, the moderators, and anyone who knows Bigkoko (Calm Travels) to prevail upon him to return my hard-earned money. If you have successfully recovered funds from him before or have advice on the best legal/administrative steps to take against his business entity, please share it with me.
