Politics › Jonathan Seeks Nigerian Global Community's Support For President Elect.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:26am On May 21, 2015
jBy Ben Agande

ABUJA — President Goodluck Jonathan has again called on the global community and Nigerians to support the incoming government of President-elect Muhammadu Buhari.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa while receiving members of the African Ambassadors Group, who were on a farewell and solidarity visit to him.
According to President Jonathan, the incoming government will need the cooperation and commitment of the global community and Nigerians to effectively deliver on its promises to the people.

PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN ARRIVING KOTOKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ACCRA, FOR THE 47TH ORDINARY SESSION OF THE ECOWAS AUTHORITY OF HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT IN ACCRA, GHANA ON TUESDAY (19/5/15).

He noted:“The President-elect is not new to governance in Africa so I want you to show the same commitment to him as you have shown to me. The President-elect knows that our commitment is always to project Africa. I am urging you to extend the same warmth and solidarity you have shown to me to him.”

President Jonathan further enjoined African leaders to encourage trade within the continent by building infrastructures and institutions that promote trade and relationships.

The President recalled working extensively for more than five years with other African Presidents to manage crisis in some African countries, especially in the West African sub-region, and also leading peace efforts in some of the countries like Cote d’Ivoire, Mali and Guinea Bissau.
He said: “I have been involved in solving many problems in African countries for more than five years and I know the enormity and cost of conflicts, especially on the citizenry. We cannot afford that in Nigeria.
“If we were to have a political conflict in Nigeria, I am not sure the sub-region will be able to accommodate our citizens. My commitment is to always put the country before my personal ambition and that is what I have demonstrated.”

President Jonathan, who said he would always be committed to strengthening democracy in Nigeria and Africa, noted that his decision to concede victory was to show example to the world that democracy can survive and thrive in Africa without conflicts.
“I believe that character matters in leadership. And it is not just about who becomes the president of a country, but somebody has to be there and the person needs the support of all to succeed. I made a choice to keep the country away from conflict.
“I have always advised other African leaders that we will need to have a country before we can have the ambition to become presidents. We don’t have to expose our people to deaths because we want to stay in power. Some people hold on to power, may be, for fear of the unknown,” the President added.

In his remarks, the Dean of Diplomatic Corps in Nigeria, His Excellency Oubi Bochir, commended President Jonathan’s high sense of patriotism, statesmanship and transparency in the last general elections, saying that he won the heart and minds of all Nigerians and Africans after the elections.
“Let us make it clear, that within the Nigerian and African context and the example your Excellency has set, there was no loser in the elections but winners. The President-elect by winning the majority of votes, and the incumbent in establishing a long lasting legacy by winning the hearts and minds of all Nigerians and Africans,” he said.
Mr. Bochir, who is the Ambassador of Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Nigeria, extolled President Jonathan for making a single phone call that saved the country from political conflict, restored confidence in African democracy and left a benchmark for other countries to follow.
The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps was accompanied on the visit by eight other ambassadors from Cameroon, Liberia, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, South Africa, South Sudan, Namibia and Ethiopia.

Politics › Failures From Apc-govt Won't Be Tolerated In Jigawa- Gov. Sule Lamido Warns by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:59pm On May 20, 2015
From ABDULLAH TSOHO,Dutse

Outgoing Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido yesterday said the incoming All Progressives Congress (APC) government must deliver as his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not tolerate any failure.

Governor Lamido disclosed this while commissioning the new State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) office in Dutse, the state capital.

Lamido said the PDP during its 16 years reign  suffered a lot of setbacks and intimidation particularly from the opposition APC.

His words: “We heard them, even before assuming office, they are asking for patience from Nigerians on their campaign promises, saying  what they can’t achieve and that everything should be gradual, what is gradual? Now you know everything should be gradual.

“As Nigerians too, we are not going anywhere, we will keep tracking the government, no tolerance and we must shout on them and they must work for Nigeria.

“Our PDP government turned Nigeria into a new world and Jigawa State in particular but, just because of selfish interest of a few, they kept sabotaging, blackmailing and intimidating our government”, he said.

“So, we will do the same to the ruling party, no surrender till the end of their tenure in the next four years,” Lamido said.

According to him, the PDP administration has done well for Nigeria, leaving unforgettable and good legacies that no one dismiss.

Lamido said his administration turned Dutse, into real state capital with the execution of various developmental projects.

The outgoing governor also condemned his predecessor, Alhaji Saminu Turaki for not doing enough during his eight years tenure.

Politics › Femi Falani: Facts Abouts Buhari's New Image Maker.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:32pm On May 20, 2015
The president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly made his first appointment by making Femi Adeshina his special adviser on media and publicity.

Adeshina’s purported appointment is already eliciting reactions from Nigerians in the blogosphere as the news has got people contributing their opinions for or against his appointment.

Some people have also been asking who Femi Adeshina is, his experience in the media industry and what must have influenced the decision to appoint him.

Naij.com has dug deep into the profile of the media guru to bring you 10 things you need to know about him. Read below:

1. He is the managing director and editor-in-chief of The Sun newspaper.

2. He is the current president of the Nigeria Guild of Editors, a very powerful and influential group in society consisting of senior editors in the Nigerian media industry.

3. He attends the popular Deeper Life Bible Church and he is a big fan of gospel and apala music.

4. In his office, he is called “A Buharist”, an indication that he is a firm supporter of the president-elect.

5. He writes a widely read column on the back page of the newspaper every Friday with the title – “Before The Cock Crows”.

6. He is widely regarded as the best president the Guild of Editors have ever had because of his constant vocal support for journalists’ welfare.

7.  In 2007, he was named the Editor of the Year by the Nigeria Media Merit Award. He has been a practicing journalist for over 28 years.

8. He started his career at Vanguard Newspaper and he is the pioneer editor of The Sun newspaper.

9. He is married to Nike Adeshina and they are blessed with children.

10. He is not a fan of the social media as he neither has a Facebook or Twitter account for now.

Adeshina’s appointment is ironical due to the fact that The Sun newspaper published offensive adverts against Buhari, as promoted by the Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose.

However, Adeshina has explained the reason why the adverts were published on his watch.

Politics › Kudos To Jonathan At Last- ECOWAS Summit by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:34pm On May 20, 2015
From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations and others yesterday commended President Goodluck Jonathan’s role in democratic development in the sub-region.

At the 47th  Ordinary Session of The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)  Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Accra, Ghana, all the speakers at the opening session heaped praises on the outgoing President for not only working hard to promote  peace and democracy in Guinea Bissau, Mali, Cote d’ Ivoire  and other sister-nations, but also  for guiding Nigeria through a tensed electioneering period which ended peacefully.

Ghanaian President John Mahanma expressed the satisfaction of the international community about the peaceful outcome of the general elections in Nigeria and Togo. He said: “Ladies and gentlemen, at our summit, I informed you that five members-states of our sub-region would hold election this year. We are extremely proud of the elections held so far in two of our member-states.

“I salute the people of Nigeria and Togo for the peaceful elections held in those countries. This sends a strong message to the world that our protocol on democracy and good governance is effective and has strengthened the rule of law in our sub-region.

“Let me, on your behalf, take this opportunity to highly commend our brother, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his personal show of mature statesmanship in the event that followed the presidential election held in Nigeria.

“I believe his name will be recorded in a special place when the history of Nigeria’s democracy comes to be written. Let me also on this occasion salute Gen. Muhammadu Buhari for his victory in the presidential election,” he said.

Mahanma also expressed concern that despite the efforts of multi-national force and other security outfit to defeat Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, the sect was still operating especially as the missing Chibok schoolgirls were still missing.

“On behalf of ECOWAS. I wish to thank the leadership of the Economic Community  of Central African States (ECAS) for their support and contributions to this fight.

“We look forward to the proposed joint summit of ECOWAS and ECAS to formulate a joint plan for defeating and eventually eliminating the Boko Haram threat,” he added.

While acknowledging the progress of the sub-region in democracy, free movement, Ebola control and others, Mahanma said the closed-door session  will focus on peace and security, location of the Centre for Disease Control in West Africa, the crises in Mali, 40th anniversary which comes up on May 28 and others.

Also speaking, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas,  also expressed the appreciation of the world body to Jonathan’s sacrifices and contribution to peace in the sub-region.

“Let me begin by commending the role of ECOWAS and its leadership in close cooperation with the United Nations towards the peaceful holding of recent general elections in Nigeria and Togo.

As this marks the final summit of President Jonathan, I will like to send our sincere appreciation for his valuable contributions to regional integration, maintenance of peace and security in a West Africa, most notably in Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea and Mali,” he said.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, also remarked that the commission would never forget Jonathan for his contributions to sub-regional peace and stability.

He also eulogized Nigeria’s elder statesman and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) over his contributions to the formation and growth of ECOWAS.

He said:  “In this year, when ECOWAS is celebrating its 40th year of existence. I would like to pay tribute to General Yakubu Gowon , our special guest who unfortunately is unable to join us today. He has continued to generously share with us his vast and rich experience and deep knowledge in the pursuit of the integration agenda. As I pay tribute to him in all respect and deference. I also mention all the architects of a viable regional economic community today, filed with promise for a glorious tomorrow

“I think firstly of the increased credibility that ECOWAS has received due to the conduct of the presidential election in Nigeria and the manner in which it was concluded. We owe this to the choices made by two main players, President Goodkuck Ebele Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari to place the general interest of the country above theirs.

“In joining the well deserved tribute paid by the current chairman to the presidents and the Nigerian people, I also wish to express to them my very best wishes and sincere gratitude for the interest and attention they have paid to the recommendations made by our organization during the electoral process”.

To Jonathan he said, “I wish to assure him that the commission will never forget his crucial contribution in the management and resolution of crises n Guinea Bisau, Mali, and Burkina Faso as well as in the fight against the Ebola virus disease among other challenging matters.

“I am confident that nothing will come to make us forget the great pride Nigeria has brought us only a few weeks ago.”

The meeting served as Jonathan’s valedictory appearance in an ECOWAS meeting as Head of State.
