National Bureau of Statistics - The harsh economic situation in the country has thrown 1.7 million Nigerians into the job market in nine months, a report from the National Bureau of Statistics has indicated.
The unemployment report, which was obtained by Sunday Punch on Friday, covered January to September this year.


Specifically, the report showed that the number of unemployed Nigerians rose from 9.48 million at the beginning of the year to 11.19 million by September ending.

The report also indicated that while the number of those employed rose marginally from 69 million at the beginning of the year to 69.47 million by September ending, the labour force population rose by 2.18 million from 78.48 million to 80.66 million.

The report said that unemployment was highest for persons in the labour force between the ages of 15-24 and 25-34, representing the youth population in the labour force.
For instance, it said the unemployment rate was highest for those within the ages of 15 to 24, rising from 21.5 per cent in the beginning of the year to 25 per cent as of September ending this year.

For the 25 to 34 age group, the unemployment rate, according to the NBS report, increased from 12.9 per cent at the beginning of the year to 15 per cent as of the end of September.
It noted that unemployment and underemployment were higher for women than men in the third quarter of 2016.

For instance, it said while 15.9 per cent of women in the labour force were unemployed as of the third quarter ending this year, a further 22.9 per cent of women in the labour force were underemployed during the period.

On the other hand, the report said 12 per cent of males were unemployed in the third quarter of 2016, while 16.7 per cent of males in the labour force were underemployed during the same period.

“Given that the nature of rural jobs is largely menial and unskilled, such as in agriculture and the likes, unemployment is more of a concern in urban areas where more skilled labour is required.

“The unemployment rate in the urban areas was 18.3 per cent compared to 11.8 per cent in the rural areas, as the preference is more for formal white collar jobs, which are located mostly in urban centres,” the report said.
Meanwhile, financial experts have warned that the huge preference for imported items by many Nigerians, if left unchecked, could worsen the unemployment situation.

The Acting Director, Trade and Exchange Department, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Woritka Gotring, said the problem could be better managed with the patronage of made in Nigerian products.
He said the resilience of the informal sector was what had been reducing the impact of the economic crisis on Nigerians.
Gotring said if not for the resilience shown by the informal sector where a lot of people were engaged in various economic activities, it would have been very difficult to manage the economic crisis.

He said despite the fact that a lot of people in the informal sector were employed in one form of economic activity or the other, the infrastructure gap in the country was limiting the potential of the sector.

In order to enable the country to conserve its foreign exchange, he called for policy consistency that would encourage capital flows and promote local production, fiscal discipline, enhancement of local manufacturing capacity and import substitution.

Gotring said, “Foreign exchange rate is one of the most important means through which a country’s relative level of economic health is determined.

“The slump in global oil prices has hit Nigeria hard plunging the country into recession. It is evident that the economy is going through tough times with a decline in inflows and continuous demand pressure on foreign exchange arising from high import bill.”
Also, the President, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Tony Ejinkeonye, called for an aggressive diversification of the economy to reverse the unemployment situation in the country.
He said aggressive diversification of the economy through agriculture and solid minerals was vital as it would help to create more jobs for the people and reduce the level of poverty in the country.

The director of the Senator's Relief and Assistance Committee, Ahmad Mai'aya, revealed this in a meeting with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Gusau.

Mr. Mai'aya said that from 2011 to date "we have more than 300 graduates with degree, HND and Diploma/NCE who got work with different Federal Government associations through Senator Kabiru Marafa".

"We are currently making courses of action to think of exceptional abilities acquisition and entrepreneurship scheme for secondary school leavers which we would like to begin in 2017.

"We have given cash-flow to women in Gusau, Maru, Bungudu and Tsafe local government councils planned at supporting them to enhance their organizations," Mr. Mai'aya said.

As indicated by him, "we are intense on giving work to our teeming youth in satisfaction of guarantees made people during our campaigns”.

He said the provision of employment to youth was among the promises of the APC.

“I am therefore calling on political office holders to emulate the Senator and introduce relevant programmes to improve the lives of our people,” he said.

A) Guidelines for Accessing The Micro-Enterprise Fund
Maximum Loan – N500,000.00
Interest Rate - 5% per annum
Term - 12months

The guidelines for the selection are;
1.Target Fund Beneficiary: The applicant’s business must be the main source of livelihood
2.Market: The applicant must also demonstrate existence of a verifiable and economically stable market for goods and services
3.Turnover: The business must have a minimum turnover of N20, 000.00 monthly. In cases where applicant is unbanked, turnover can be estimated using price of applicant’s service and walk in or buying rate
4.Operations: The business should have been operational for at least one year otherwise the applicant should have a certification in a trade and reference from the certifying body
5.KYC: The person must have a verifiable place of residence & the promoters must be duly registered with LASRRA or possess a permanent voter’s card
6.Credit Checks: The applicant must have a clean credit record and account behaviour (where applicable)
7.BVN: The applicant must have a valid Bank Verification Number (BVN)

In addition, the beneficiaries must meet the following security conditions.
1.Personal guarantee of the principal promoter
2.Personal Life Protection Policy noting the Fund as first loss payee
3.One (1) guarantor who must either have a PVC or LASRRA registration (this guarantor can also be your organization)
4.Comprehensive insurance cover (Theft, fire, burglary etc.)
5.Right of set off on the applicant’s other accounts in any financial institution


B) Guidelines for Accessing the SME Fund
Maximum Loan Amount: N5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) in the case of an SME.
Purpose: Asset acquisition and or working capital for the business.
Interest Rate: 5% per annum
Term: Up to 36months
This funding gap will be provided by the LSETF through Fulfillment Partners as a Government Intervention Facility to the recommended SME if the conditions are fulfilled.

The Business must be:
1. Located in Lagos
2. Registered with the CAC
3. Must be registered with the LIRS
4. Must be in existence for more than 12months

The Promoter must show -
5. LASRRA Registration
6. A good understanding of the business;
a. The Market
b. The Customers
c. The Operations
7. Scalability of business
8. Equity Contribution: Minimum of 5% of loan amount
9. Monthly Turnover
10.Tax Remittance
11.Personal Guarantee

The LSETF will, subject to the recommended businesses providing additional information (as required to secure the facility to be received by the business), will recommend the business for the Government Intervention Funds to be disbursed by Fulfillment Partners.

Please note the minimum security conditions to be provided by the Businesses include;

a. Personal guarantee of the principal promoters
b. Personal Life Protection Policy noting the Fund as first loss payee.
c. Two (2) Guarantors
d. All asset debenture (where applicable: fixed and floating)
e. Comprehensive insurance cover (Theft, fire, burglary etc.)
f. Right of set off on the applicant’s other accounts in any financial institution.

Job Details

The Corporate Auditor will ultimately deliver high quality financial and operational audit reviews across Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd – both plants and its depots and ensure key objectives of the department are achieved.
The Corporate Auditor will report to the Full Scope Audit Manager.
He/She might also have to report to any of the Unit Managers within the Internal Audit Department during some audit assignments.
The key responsibilities of the role are:
• Deliver high quality financial and operational audit reviews across NBC
• Participate in ad-hoc projects and investigations
• Communicate audit observations, related risks to clients.
• Conduct audits of the Plants/Functions and provide objective view on the control environment
• Conduct special reviews and investigation when the need arises and documentation of reports
• Provide supporting documents on observation raised.
• Execute annual audit plans in an effective and efficient manner.
• Resolution of complex problems arising during projects
• Development of cost-effective, value-adding recommendations.
• Assess Plants/Functions compliance with Group policies, local policies, local regulations, etc.
• Timely Reporting of audit observations from audit projects
• Deliver high quality audit reports
• Effective communication of audit observations
• Effective management of the departmental budget, optimization of time, project/traveling costs during specific project.
• Knowledge sharing with colleagues
• Display appropriate technical and soft skills set; from which other team members can learn.
• Act as a consultant for the Company on highly significant matters relating to internal controls, financial policies, programs, capabilities and long-range goals and objectives.
• Update of audit work program/work papers on SharePoint.
• Be a consultant to the Plants/Functions on matters of controls, process improvements, capabilities and programs.
• Develop cost effective and value adding recommendations to various business observation raised.
• Act as liaison between the Plant/Function Management and internal audit department
• Increase efficiency and quality of departmental deliverables: quality of audit reports, time allocation, follow up processes, etc.
• Contributes new ideas, and intelligently partake in team discussions and active participation in the audit meeting.
• Ensure that health, safety and environmental impact is a consideration in decision- making in all matters.
• Encourage paper free audits and energy-saving initiatives
• Support the company’s CSR agenda.

Education level
• Minimum of HND or University Degree
• Full professional qualification in ICAN or ACCA will be an advantage

Experience needed
