Had I been physically unfaithful
to my husband? No. Had I
committed adultery in my heart?
Yes.
About 15 years into my marriage,
my heart started turning cold
toward my husband. He had an
odd schedule at work, and then
he spent most of his leisure
hours volunteering at our
church. When I tried to talk to
him about spending less time at
church and more with me and
our children, he angrily shot
back, “You’re just trying to hold
me back from doing God’s
work.” He then began punishing
me by turning his back to me in
the bedroom.
Feeling lonely and rejected, I
confided my misery to a friend
who had called about an
upcoming ministry project. My
friend was kind and
understanding. Unfortunately, no
one had ever told me to guard
my conversations with the
opposite sex. The friend was a
man and a very good-looking
one at that.
We began talking more
frequently. I thought the
conversations were innocent,
even though they now included
discussions about the struggles
in his marriage. Gradually, our
phone relationship escalated to
flirting, and his calls were the
highlight of my week. Neither of
us told our spouses.
At church, I noticed that he
watched me a lot. I admit that I
enjoyed the attention, the
affirmative words, and the
“high” I got with my schoolgirl
crush. If someone had asked me
if I was having an affair,
however, I would have denied
it. After all, there were no private
lunches, there was no secret
rendezvous, and there was no
physical touch except for a public
hug now and then or a slight
touch of the hand. Everybody in
our church hugged anyway so
no one was the wiser … or so I
thought.
Our emotional affair rocked on
for over a year until the day he
said to me, “I think I’m in love
with you.” Honestly, I felt the
same about him, but hearing the
words jolted me into reality. I
was so upset afterward that I
looked at myself in the mirror in
shock and cried, “What have I
done?”
I didn’t like what I saw as the
Holy Spirit replayed the ugly truth
of my actions back to me. Had I
been physically unfaithful to my
husband? No. Had I committed
adultery in my heart? Yes.
I plowed through days of agony
before finally falling to my knees
before God in surrender. One
definition of relinquishment is
“giving up title, releasing
possession or control and
yielding power.” How could I do
otherwise? I had been a Christian
for 16 years. My body was not my
own. I had been bought with a
price (1 Corinthians 6:20), so it
was no longer my will that
counted but His (Luke 22:42).
I confessed to God that I felt
nothing for my husband, but that
vows are not made to be broken.
I would rather be unhappy the
rest of my life than bring
reproach to God’s name,
embarrass my children, or break
up my family or anyone else’s. As
the Holy Spirit strengthened me, I
heard the words in my heart that
Jesus spoke to Peter over and
over (John 21:15-17): “Do you
love Me?”
“Yes Lord, I love You, and I
repent.”
“Then trust Me,” said the still,
small voice.
With my hands shaking and my
heart racing, I made the call to
tell my friend it was over. “I can’t
do this anymore because the
Lord has convicted me,” I told
him. “Please don’t call me
again.” Being an honorable man,
he had never pressed me into
anything, and he didn’t now. He
graciously made it easy for me to
say goodbye.
I didn’t think I would have to tell
my..

Shahin Munir, 24, was let in on
a terrible secret when she
discovered that 17-year-old
Shafilea Ahmed, from
Warrington, was the victim of
an honour killing. Here she
shares her remarkable story...
Shafilea Ahmed was killed by
her parents in September 2003,
and her body was found
dumped in the Lake District five
months later. Her two sisters
Alesha and Mevish witnessed
the killing along with their
brother, but terrified they
might be next, they carried the
terrible secret with them. The
only person Mevish told was
her best friend Shahin…
"Mev used to tell me about the
violence at home," Shahin tells
Cosmopolitan. "But there was
always something she couldn't
bring herself to say. I told her
that if she couldn't say it out loud
she should write it down and
give it to me instead. She was
never really allowed out by
herself but one day she texted
me and told me she was going
into town with her mum. She
said they were going to H&M so I
went there, and started looking
through clothes, keeping my
head down. I was looking
through a rail when Mev and her
mum walked past and as Mev
walked past, she dropped a letter
on the floor. I picked it up quickly
and walked out of the shop as
fast as I could."
Shahin couldn't believe it when
she got home and read Mev's
letter describing Shafilea's
murder. "I'd do anything to
change that night," Mev had
written. "I wish I never seen but I
did and Alesha did but just sat
there and watched. I even seen
the suitcase they took her in.
They knocked me over and
smacked me coz I seen."
Shahin (L) and Mev (R)
Later in court, Mev said that what
she'd written was purely fiction –
"free-writing" that she had made
up. But Shahin knew it was
absolutely true, and from then
on, she was in on the secret.
"I met up with Mev in the park
the next day," explains Shahin,
who graduated with a degree in
psychology last year. "She was
completely terrified – watching
every car that drove past
thinking it might be her dad. I
gave her the letter and said I
want you to read it out loud to
me. But she couldn't do it. She
broke down completely. I
couldn't tell anyone either
because Mev's parents used to
threaten her that she would be
next if she told anyone. She was
a victim, too. After that, Mev
would talk about Shafilea – her
nice memories of them together
as well as everything they went
through. She told me that
Shafilea was treated the worst
out of her sisters and brother –
she was the most 'trouble'.
Shafilea sometimes wasn't
allowed to eat and other times
they'd leave her outside in the
rain. It was caused by things like
her having a mobile phone and
speaking to boys, wanting to
wear makeup and heels. For her
family, those were big problems.
The thing that triggered the
argument the night she was
killed was that she went out in
just a T-shirt without her coat."
Shafilea Ahmed in happier times
When Shafilea's parents Farzana
and Ifthikar Ahmed were
arrested on suspicion of murder
and brought to trial in May 2012,
Shahin knew she had to do
something. Alesha had told police
that her parents killed Shafilea
but Mev refused to admit the
truth.
"Even though Mev had begged
me not to, once the trial started I
rang the police and told them I
had evidence. Mev had asked for
the letters back but I'd
photocopied them and I also
kept a diary. I was disappointed
that Mev wouldn't speak out. As
soon as they'd been charged, I
said to Mev 'You're going to have
to forget about your mum and
dad. This trial is about your
sister. You have to stand up for
her because..........

After spending 11 months as a
prostitute in London, Polly's
ready to tell her horrifying story
from the streets
Polly Trope* spent 11 months
working as a prostitute,
detouring into selling sex shortly
after quitting her PhD at an Ivy
League university in the US.
"I had really bad mental health
issues and although I wanted to
finish my degree I knew I
couldn't," she reveals. "So I
decided to return to London,
where I'd studied for my
undergraduate degree. I
reckoned it would be easier to
find somewhere to stay and get
a job there than it was in
America." But when she arrived
in London, Polly didn't
immediately get round to looking
for work. "I drank a lot and took
drugs and used up all my
savings," she says. "One night I
was thrown out of my lodgings
because I hadn't paid my rent. So
I just went into Soho, where I
bumped into one of my dealers."
This chance meeting turned out
to be life-changing. "He asked if I
wanted to buy any drugs," says
Polly. "I said no, telling him that it
was partly drugs that had got me
into my current situation." He
said: "I can help you make some
money. Let's go round the clubs
and offer a deal: you give them a
Mouth Gig and I sell them some
coke." The pair tried this - with
limited success. Then, while
Polly's dealer was off chatting to
someone else, she was
approached by another man. "I
have another idea," he mused.
"My friend has this great place..."
Later that night, Polly found
herself inside her first brothel.

"I didn't even really care by then,"
Polly sighs. "I saw one client that
night and got £200. Fortunately
he was super-easy; he just
wanted to look at me and touch
me a little bit. He was really
friendly and seemed a bit
embarrassed about being there."
Polly was less afraid of the client,
indeed, than she was of the
brothel-owner and the man
who'd brought her to the
brothel. "I didn't really know
where I was or if I could trust
anyone not to turn violent." Still,
with nowhere else to go, she
stayed at the brothel. At first she
wasn't chosen by many clients,
as she still hadn't bought herself
an "outfit" of sexy lingerie and
heels like the other women.

Most people would have called
this a marriage without hope.
This is no joke. Real people. Real
struggles. Real reality.
Brett returned home from work
one night, took a bite from the
meal his wife, Tina, had
prepared, and declared, “This
tastes like dog food!”
“Fine,” Tina snapped back. “You
don’t have to eat it!”
The next night Brett took a
couple bites from dinner and
practically choked. “What on
earth is this?” he said.
“Last night you said my meal
tasted like dog food,” Tina
replied. “So tonight I decided not
to waste my time making
anything special for you. I just
fed you dog food!”
Many would have said this was a
marriage without hope. Brett
and Tina were typical of many
couples today—struggling
through life with no game plan
for how they could be successful
in their marriage.
They decided to attend a
Weekend to Remember marriage
getaway because someone gave
them a free registration. What
did they have to lose?
Midway through the weekend,
Brett recommitted his life to
Jesus Christ. For Tina it was a
different experience. She
disagreed with many of the
messages she heard.
On the final morning, she
stormed out and demanded that
they leave. Brett drove Tina home
and then returned to the
conference by himself.
Over the next few months, Brett
began to demonstrate to Tina
that he was a changed man. He
applied some of the lessons he
learned at the conference and
gradually began to win Tina over
through real love. Tina’s heart
softened, and eventually she
invited Jesus Christ to be her
Savior and the Lord of her life.
A year after they first attended
the marriage conference, they
came back, walking hand in
hand. They still struggled, but
now they possessed a
relationship with the God who
designed marriage in the first
place.
Brett has learned to appreciate
Tina. And her cooking.

Lover to female staff of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Miss Sophia Phillips Horsefall, and two others were, yesterday, arraigned at a Port Harcourt magistrate’s court by Department of State Services, DSS, for stabbing her to death after she had refused to make him, the boyfriend, her next-of-kin to her bank account as well as her refusal to give him one million (N1 million) he had demanded from her. The accused, Sotonye Martin, Innocent Oluche and Wachukwu Ugochukwu committed the murder on November 8 this year. Counsel to the DSS, Mr C. S. Eze, told the court that the first defendant, Mr. Sotonye Martin, lured the deceased, who he had a 13-year-old daughter for, to the house of the second defendant, Innocent Oluche, where he allegedly stabbed her to death. He claimed the first and second defendants later buried the deceased in a shallow grave, noting that they invited the third defendant, Wachukwu Ugochukwu, a spiritualist, to perform some rituals. According to him, the accused were brought before the court on a three-count charge which included “stabbing to death with a jack knife and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Laws of Rivers State 1999.” The accused did not take plea. Chief Magistrate F. Alikor referred the casefile to the state Director of Public Prosecution, saying her court did not have jurisdiction to entertain matters over murder which was the second charge. She remanded the accused in prison custody and adjourned the matter indefinitely. Elder brother to the deceased, Mr Amatu Phillips, while speaking to newsmen, alleged that his sister was murdered by the boyfriend of 13 years, Mr. Martin because of her wealth. He claimed she had some money in her account and confided in the boyfriend who later kept on pestering her for financial support. According to him, after the sister had allegedly given him money several times, he came again demanding for N1 million which she refused. He alleged that the boyfriend later lured her to his friend’s house, offered her a fruit juice drink which, unknown to the sister, was drugged. He, however, did not get to his

According to a Closed-Circuit

A burglar who was caught
attempting to rape a 94-year-old
deaf and blind woman has been
jailed for 14 years.
Gregory Willis, who had already
removed the grandmother’s
lower nightclothes was caught
kneeling on the woman’s bed
without his trousers on.
The judge who presided over the
case described Willis’ action as
“deeply shocking, horrifying and
appalling as could possibly be
imagined.”
According to Daily Mail, Judge
John Pini added, “The victim is 94
years of age. She had not long
before this left a nursing home
to be cared for in a safe, loving
environment for the remaining
time of her life.
“She was registered blind, hard
of hearing, had no short term
memory, had poor balance and
was doubly incontinent. She
could not communicate. She was
as frail and vulnerable as it is
possible to be.’
The the victim’s son-in-law told
the Daily Mail after the sentencing
that he was ‘shocked and
stunned that somebody could
intend on doing such a thing’.
The victim, who was so frail she
could barely communicate, had
been sleeping on a hospital
trolley in the front room of his
home, having been left virtually
bedridden since suffering a fall,
he added.
A court heard drunken Willis had
stumbled into the property on a

12.30am by trying an open door
as a family gathering wound
