United States said on Friday in Abuja that it remained committed to helping the Federal Government in tackling the threat of Boko Haram and other extremist organisations to the country US President Barack Obama (R) shakes hands with President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria before their bilateral meeting in New York on September 23, 2013 on the sideline of the United Nations General Assembly. AFP This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Affairs Department embassy in Nigeria. It said the U.S. government has also restated its commitment to support Nigeria’s efforts to” rescue the abducted Chibok girls and all others who have been abducted in various communities”. It particularly condemned in the strongest terms the attack on Gumsuri village, Borno , which was reported to have been perpetrated by Boko Haram. “We are aware of reports from persons who fled the scene of the attack that suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped more than 100 women and children and killed 35 people. “We abhor such violence, which continues to take a terrible toll on the people of Nigeria, and we extend our condolences to the victims and their families. “Boko Haram has shown no regard for human life,” it said. It expressed concerns that this year alone, Boko Haram had murdered thousands of innocent people in vicious attacks on schools, churches, and mosques. According to the statement, Boko Haram attacks have resulted in displacement of hundreds of thousands of Nigerians. (NAN)

At least three senior leaders of Isis have been killed in US airstrikes in Iraq in the past month and a half, US defense officials announced today. General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Wall Street Journal in an interview that Haji Mutazz, a deputy to Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi; Abd al- Basit, the top military commander; and Radwin Talib, who is in control of Isis in Iraq, were killed. Mr Dempsey told the newspaper that the deaths of Mutazz and al-Basit would deal a particularly serious blow to Isis' "planning and command and control". However, the official said the hindrance may only be temporary, as Isis is likely to have replacements lined up. Dempsey said the senior leaders were killed in recent weeks as part of expanding effort with partner nations to combat the militants. One of Nigeria’s most powerful Muslim leaders, the emir of Kano, has voiced support for vigilantes fighting Boko Haram, urging others to form civilian militias and questioning the competence of the military. The comments were made by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who became emir earlier this year after being sacked from his post as the central bank governor, where he was one of the government’s most high-profile critics. It is extremely rare for Nigeria’s clerics to speak explicitly about political and military affairs, but many expected Sanusi to defy convention and inject himself into public debate after assuming the highly influential post. “People should be sensitised on the importance of being on the alert. And they should prepare, they should acquire what they will defend themselves with,” Sanusi said during Friday prayers at the central mosque in Kano, the largest city in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north. AFP obtained a copy of the transcript of the recording on Monday. While Sanusi did not mention Boko Haram by name, it was clear he was discussing efforts to resist the Islamist rebels. “Those that are endowed as hunters and vigilantes should apply this endowment given to them by Allah as an avenue of earning divine reward in defending their nation,” he said. Nigeria’s military has been cooperating with various vigilante forces in the northeast for more than a year, often relying on civilians to do the bulk of the fighting against the insurgents. Witnesses said it was vigilantes who recaptured the symbolically important northeast town of Chibok from Boko Haram at the weekend, with troops staying clear of the heavy fighting. Chibok was where the Islamists kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in April. Fifty-seven have escaped. “We should not wait for soldiers to come, before they come the carnage will have been done,” Sanusi told the congregation. “Some of them drop their guns and flee.” The military has repeatedly been accused of leaving civilians defenceless against Boko Haram attacks and failing to respond to distress calls made in advance of raids. While Sanusi’s comments were similar to those made by President Goodluck Jonathan’s critics, they may feed added resentment towards the government because the emir of Kano is expected to stay above the political fray. Days after Jonathan sacked him from the central bank, Sanusi told AFP that the president was a “simple” man who had been misled and manipulated by incompetent advisors. Officially, Sanusi is the number two Islamic cleric in Nigeria, home to more than 80 million Muslims. But many consider the emir of Kano to be more influential than the sultan of Sokoto, who is the country’s top Islamic leader. |
Bauchi-The causality figure of the yesterday bomb explosion that rocked a busy phone market known as Kasuwan Jagol in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi state has risen to 31 while 30 patients are currently on admission. However the Chief Medical Director of Azare Medical Centre Dr. Abduallhi Ibrahim told newsmen that the hospital recorded 17 deaths and 30 of the victims of the bomb explosion are on admission. While giving the breakdown of the causality figure, Dr. Ibrahim said out of the 17 that died in the hospital 14 are victims of the explosion and 3 are suspected suicide bombers. He confirmed that Doctors and Nurses have defied Joint Health Workers Union strike to attend to the victims of the bomb blast and that they patients are responding to treatment. Mr Sunday Olaifa, the Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oshodi/Isolo Local Government, said he was confident that the PDP would form the next government in the state. Olaifa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that “Lagosians are yearning for a change and are tired of the neglect of the commoners by the ruling party in the state’’. He said that the PDP had resolved to come out with the best candidates at all levels through the primaries. According to him, it is becoming increasingly clear to the ruling party in the state that by one man, one vote, PDP would win the coming governorship and other elections in the state. “As a party, we are doing everything humanly possible and legally to ensure victory. We have done reconciliation in the state like it had never been done before. “We have gone far in the area of mobilisation as it had never been done in the party. “The state executives went on tour of all the 20 local government chapters of the party across the state and the local government chapter leaderships also went on a tour of all the wards aimed at massive mobilisation drive. “It can be seen that Lagosians have in totality been rejecting the APC. One can feel it that the coming elections will not be business as usual in favour of the APC. “The APC in Lagos State has taken the common people for granted for so long. The tax burden in Lagos is another reason why Lagosians have decided to reject APC in the forthcoming 2015 general elections, ’’ Olaifa said. He condemned the blanket ban on `Okada’ (motorcycle) without alternative provisions to the riders as well as the rising tuition fees in schools. Olaifa alleged that there was an attempt by some APC leaders during the INEC’s card distribution exercise in Lagos Mainland Local Government Council, to exchange unclaimed Permanent Voter’s Cards for the Temporary Voter’s Cards they came with. He said the INEC voter’s cards distribution officer turned down the request. Olaifa drew the attention of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega to ongoing rigging at the various polling units in the state. “I have no doubt in my mind that in a free and fair election, Lagosians have come to a conclusion to reject the APC in the next general election in the state come 2015,’’ he said. Efforts to speak with the Lagos State APC Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale was not successful as his phone line was switched off. The history of Onitsha is said to have begun with the migration of its people from the Benin Empire towards the end of early part of the 16th century as a result of a wave of unrest, war and displacement unleashed by the Islamic movement from North Africa. One version said that it was during their passage through the outskirts of Ile-Ife that they acquired the name Onitsha, a corruption of Orisha Udo. Another version has it that their migration to East of the Niger has to do with a misunderstanding that arose between the Onitsha family and Oba Esigie (1404-1550), following the slighting of their shrine, Udo, by the Oba. According to the legend, it was customary for newly installed Oba to pay homage to all important shrines in the Benin Kingdom by slaughtering a cow in the shrines enclave. But Oba Esigie is said to have refused to do this at the Onitsha people’s Udo-Shrine, hence the quarrel and the migration down towards the River Niger area and across it. Ukpabi disagrees with the Oba Esigie angle and posits that the misunderstanding and migration was rather as a result of “a fight over a farmland. These other people fighting over farmland with the others and interest started coming. And because of interest, bitterness ensued and the two brothers decided to go their separate ways. One said, no, ‘I will now leave you, I’m going to Ado N’Idu.’ ‘Ado’ means border. ‘I will leave you and go and settle down on my own. I’m no longer going to be with you.’ That’s the issue. So, the two brothers had to separate.” Onitsha, capital of Igbo Kingdom The immigrant settlers from Benin were said to have been helped by the Igalas to cross the river to settle in Onitsha in the 16th century, which was originally called Ado N’Idu. It soon became the capital of an Igbo Kingdom. In 1857, British traders in palm oil established a permanent station in the city, and Christian missionaries soon followed, headed by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther (a Yoruba) and Reverend John Taylor (an Igbo). In 1884, Onitsha became part of a British protectorate. The British colonial government and Christian missionaries penetrated most of Igboland to set up their administration, schools and churches through the river port at Onitsha. Historically, Onitsha became an important trading port for the Royal Niger Company in the mid-1850s. Following the abolition of slavery, trade in palm kernels and other cash crops boomed around this river port. Immigrants from the hinterland were drawn to the emerging boom town as did the British traders who settled there and coordinated the palm oil and cash crops trade. Colonial relics and post-colonial architectural wonders Areas bordering Old Market, New Market Roads, Upper Market Road, Modebe Avenue, Iboku, Old Cemetry, Old Hospital, Mbanugo St, Emejulu St, Obi Street, Benjamin St, Court, Enugu Road, Awka Road, Egerton, etc are known as Whitemen Quarters, so- called because the white colonial masters who first settled in Onitsha, used to live here. And, even till today, the white colonial style of buildings such as you see at Yaba, Ebute Metta and Central Lagos, can be seen existing, side by side, with the new, on these streets. But much more modern exotic architectural wonders exist in places like the G.R.A and “33” Housing Estates. Sunday Sun understands that SCityGate Real Estate Ltd, located on Mike Ilodibe Crescent and which specializes in building ultra-modern architectural structures, makes such building wonders happen for interested clients. In 1965, a bridge was built across the Niger River to replace the ferry crossing. Today, plans are said to be underway to build the Second Niger Bridge. Onitsha is made up of three groups of people, Ukpabi reveals. The first is the Edos, the Ezechima’s team. The second, Igalas. They were the people that were fishing at the Niger by the time Onitsha people came to settle there. The third, the Igbos who are very close to the Niger and had integrated with them. These three groups make up what is today known as Onitsha.” “Their tradition is blended with the three peoples, first the Edos, second the Igalas”, Ukpabi says. “In fact, in the past, there were some villages in Onitsha that spoke Igala. And they are made up of two villages. They are still in Onitsha. Onitsha is made up of nine villages. Two out of the nine are purely the Igalas: Ogbodu and Obigboru. So, that is how Onitsha people came to be. “The ones with Edo influence are the monarchy itself. That’s the Eze Chima, that is the ruling villages. They are four in number. Umueze Aroli, Okebunabu (which include Umudei and Ogbabu) and Olosi. The present Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe is the 21st Obi of Onitsha.” Inter-marriages, says Ukpabi, have long existed between the Igalas and the Edos. “The people our ancestors met fishing at the bank of the River Niger were purely Igallas. They were following the Niger all the way from their place to Onitsha. So, they don’t normally come to the upper land. They remain there. They have their buildings in their canoes. So, we attracted them into coming to the hinterland. We started intermarrying with them. One of the outstanding monarchs of Onitsha, Obi Eze Aroli, the mother, Enubi, is from Igala.” SOURCE: http://www.edoworld.net/History_of_Onitsha.html |
