Barcelona, Spain | AFP | Barcelona have finally abandoned their quest to land Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, 25, after having a series of bids for the Brazilian rejected, Spanish media reported on Friday.

The transfer deadline for Spanish clubs doesn’t close until midnight local time (2200GMT) on Friday, 24 hours after the rest of Europe’s major leagues.

However, despite reportedly making an offer of up to 160 million euros ($190 million) for the playmaker, Liverpool have refused to backtrack on their intention not to sell Coutinho.

“Barca will not sign Coutinho,” Barcelona-based sports daily Sport reported in their online edition, citing sources close to the player.

“The club has taken the decision to not insist in the final hours of the market.”

Barcelona have been under huge pressure to reinvest the 222 million euros the club banked from Neymar’s world record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain last month.

The Catalans have splashed 192 million euros on five signings, including 105 million on 20-year-old French winger Ousmane Dembele in a deal that could yet rise to 145 million depending on performance related bonuses.

Coutinho hasn’t played for Liverpool this season after submitting a transfer request with the club citing a back injury.

However, he showed no sign of discomfort as he came off the bench to score as Brazil saw off Ecuador 2-0 in World Cup qualifying on Thursday before appearing to break down in tears during his celebration.

“Unfortunately, instead of being a happy time for him, for his family, it’s a moment of anguish, disappointment and sadness,” Neymar said of his international teammate’s mood.

Liverpool have been steadfast in their intentions not to sell over the past month.

“The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes,” said a statement from Liverpool’s FSG ownership group on August 11.

Harry Kane scored a brace to help Gareth Southgate's lacklustre England to a 4-0 win over minnows Malta in their 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday.

Kane opened the score early in the second-half but three goals inside the last 10 minutes put a brighter sheen on the result than the performance deserved.

Ryan Bertrand -- with a long range effort barely acknowledged by a far from happy looking Southgate -- Danny Welbeck and Kane at the death secured the points in Malta and keeps them top of Group F by two points from Slovakia.

However, the English -- boasting players whose salaries and transfer fees dwarfed that of their opponents -- will need to put up a far better display at home to the Slovakians on Monday.

Kane, though, said people should realise that Malta had set out to stifle and frustrate England -- it is the first time in three meetings an England side has beaten the Maltese by more than a goal. "Whenever you come away for games like this it is never going to be easy," he told ITV.

"We were trying to break them down, they had 10 men behind the ball. We knew if we just kept moving it wide we would find the space.

"The manager makes his choices (Southgate started with just him up front), he puts the team out he thinks we will win the game and we won 4-0 so we have done the right job tonight."

England -- winning for just the second time in their last six matches and giving Southgate his first away win since he took over -- started brightly and could have been 2-0 up inside the first five minutes.

Raheem Sterling should have done better when found brilliantly by Kane just yards out from the goal but the Manchester City star dallied and allowed England-born goalkeeper Andrew Hogg to come out and gather the ball.

Hogg was very active early on and pulled off a fine reaction save from Kane in the fifth minute the Spurs striker meeting club team-mate Dele Alli's pinpoint cross with his head.

However, from that point on till the second minute of time added on and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's scuffed shot the Malta goalkeeper didn't have another save to make.

The England players' woeful performance saw them exit the pitch at half-time to a cacophony of boos and jeers from their fans.

Southgate acted at half-time to remedy the lacklustre performance and took off Sterling sending on Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford instead.

However, it was the hosts who came up with the first meaningful shot of the half Andre Schembri -- the only player in the Malta squad to play in the top division of a European league for Apollon Limassol in Cyprus -- fashioning out a half-volley that whistled past Hart's far post.

Kane though at last broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute Alli doing superbly to draw two defenders to him then passing to his clubmate who made no mistake -- earning a clap from Southgate more out of relief than joy.

Malta were far from disheartened, Sam Magri -- a former England Youth international with the likes of Sterling and substitute Nathaniel Chalobah but now plying his trade with non league Ebbsfleet -- fired in a decent long range effort that forced Hart to dive to cover it.

Kane showed he was just as dangerous from outside the box firing in a fierce effort on the hour mark that Hogg did well to save.

Bertrand and Welbeck added late goals before Kane sealed his double and his 10th in 20 internationals.

Rashford created it after refusing to follow Kyle Walker's instruction and put the ball out because a Malta player was injured instead teeing up Kane.

Xavi believes Barcelona are no longer following their footballing philosophies and says they have failed to sign better this transfer window.

Barcelona was regarded as a power house of top talents over the years, but has lost a couple of players and the Barcelona legend believes they are replacing players with substandard ones.

The Catalans were rocked by the €222 million sale of Neymar , bringing in Dembele and Paulinho and Xavi says the club must work on finding better players and look to better La Masia.

The World Cup winner told Marca: “Barca still play really good football but they could have signed better.

“They’ve fallen asleep because five or six years ago they had the best players in the world for Barca’s system. Now, for that system, they have five or six players: [Andres] Iniesta, [Jordi] Alba, [Lionel] Messi, [Gerard] Pique, Luis Suarez, [Sergio] Busquets.

“But Barca should have 11 for that system. Before, you wouldn’t see anyone play and say: ‘He’d be good at Barca.’ That’s because they were already there. They have signed players that don’t fit that system.

“The academy has to be strengthened. If there are doubts, look at what you have in-house. In Barca’s best era, at least 60 percent of the players came from the academy.”

Electric Cars to Be Introduced Into Nigerian Market Next Year...Here's the Details You Need to Know

Nigus Enfinity, an indigenous firm, says it will introduce electric vehicles into the Nigerian automobile market in 2018 and that its local assembly plant for electric vehicles will be ready in 2020.

Malik Ado-Ibrahim, chairman of the company, made this known to journalists in an interactive session which held in Abuja on Thursday.

Ado-Ibrahim said several countries across the world have set targets for the ban of petrol-fuelled vehicles with India targeting 2030, and the United Kingdom, 2040.

He said Nigeria and Africa need to look inward to be at the fore of the automotive revolution or risk becoming waste bin for banned vehicles from other countries.

Ado-Ibrahim, who was the first African to lead the Formula 1 Team global race car competition in 1999, said his firm is already building a 100 megawatts (mw) solar power plant in Katsina and another in Adamawa state.

According to him, the company has also partnered with Build Your Dreams, a Chinese firm, to import electric vehicles at affordable costs from 2018.
“We are also working with BYD to get a local brand and start an electric vehicle assembly plant for Nigeria from 2020. Gradually we will move to an EV with the African DNA starting in Nigeria,” he said.
