Popular Abia-born journalist and online publisher Ifeanyi Okali has called on the state governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to engage his predecessors and devise measures to solve the state's growing challenges. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC25YaN6b7I In an open letter to the governor on Thursday, Okali decried the threat of insecurity in various parts of the state which he said has affected economic activities. "I'm writing to you today as a concerned citizen of Abia State, urging you to prioritize the security of our great state. While you've made significant strides in other areas, security remains the cornerstone of progress. No city thrives under insecurity, and we must tackle this challenge head-on", he noted. He therefore advised that Otti's predecessors, including Sen. Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Sen. Theodore Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu, and other stakeholders should be invited for a meeting so that workable measures are adopted to reduce security threats in the state. "I recommend putting aside party and individual differences and meeting with former Governors of the state to adopt some of the effective measures they implemented during their tenure (nobody knows all). By building upon past successes, we can curb the current security threats plaguing our state. "It's crucial that media aides and government officials - new and old Abia refrain from politicizing security issues. Assigning blame amidst incessant security threats is a misplaced priority. Every Abian life matters, regardless of party affiliation or background. "Let's work together to ensure Abia State becomes a beacon of peace and prosperity. I believe that under your leadership, we can overcome these challenges and create a safer, more secure environment for all Abians", he noted. The incident reportedly occurred in Shawu village, Ruwan Godiya district, Faskari Local Government Area, on Thursday morning. Tragedy reportedly struck in Katsina State, Northwest Nigeria, as multiple casualties are reported following an accidental bombing by the Nigerian Air Force. The incident reportedly occurred in Shawu village, Ruwan Godiya district, Faskari Local Government Area, on Thursday morning. According to an eyewitness, the air strike was intended to target bandits in the area but mistakenly hit the community. The exact number of fatalities and injuries is yet to be confirmed. Salihu Bamle Bakatsine, a resident of Katsina State, broke the news of the accidental bombing on his X handle. He said, "Moment ago, Nigeria Airforce mistakenly bombard Shawu community, several people are now confirmed dead and many others injured. "Shawu community is under Ruwan Godiya district, Faskari LGA, Katsina State. "May the Almighty have mercy on those who lost their lives, grant healing to the injured and bring ease in the future." The state commissioner for internal security, Dr. Nasiru Mu'azu, confirmed that there was bombing the area but said it was not accidental. According to him, it was a precision strike targeted at terrorists and not civilians. "Whoever told you that the attack was accidental lied. The bomb was dropped on purpose, terrorists were the target. "Make no mistake about this, the Nigerian military is highly professional in its operations; they strike after surveillance and then getting the coordinate of their target before striking.” "You see, Shawu has become notorious for harbouring bandits and other forms of terrorists, that's why the area was targeted," Mu'azu added. In the same vein, the Faskari Local Government Council chairman, Musa Ado Faskari said, "The airstrike was precise because bandits have infiltrated the community." When asked about the fate of innocent citizens living in the Shawu, he said, "It's unfortunate that it has happened, but the truth is that there's just no alternative to this. After all, majority of good people have left Shawu because of the heavy presence of bandits.” "Let me tell you, all around, when kidnapping for ransom is carried out, you'll always get to hear that the plan was hatched in Shawu," Ado said. Regarding fatalities, the local council chairman said, "Four deaths were recorded.” “As of the wounded, we're still sorting things out to determine their numbers," he added. https://saharareporters.com/2024/11/21/breaking-scores-feared-dead-nigerian-air-force-targeting-terrorists-bombs-katsina |

The Senate on Thursday approved President Bola Tinubu’s loan request of $2.2 billion to partially finance the ₦9.7 trillion budget deficit for the 2024 fiscal year. The approval followed the presentation of a report by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Aliyu Wamakko, during plenary. Presiding over the session, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended the committee for its swift action and thorough examination of the loan request. In a letter read during the Senate and House of Representatives plenaries on Tuesday, Tinubu had explained that the loan was integral to his administration’s fiscal strategy for the coming year. “The Presidential request for $2.2 billion, equivalent to ₦1.77 trillion, is already enshrined in the external borrowing plan for the 2024 fiscal year,” Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated while reading the letter. He further directed the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts to expedite its review of the request and present a report within 24 hours. “The Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Loans should, therefore, give the request expeditious consideration and report back within 24 hours,” Akpabio emphasised. Although the deadline elapsed on Wednesday, the committee submitted its findings during Thursday’s plenary, leading to the loan’s approval.
