Barring any last minute legal battle to save their deregistration, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will commence the deregistration of more than 55 political parties, including Orji Uzor Kalu’s Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) that failed to win at least a seat in the state House of Assembly elections.

There are 63 registered political parties, but only eight of them were able to win at least a seat in the election.
In the general election, only 18 political parties fielded presidential candidates and 23 fielded governorship candidates across the states of the federation.

According to the 2011 Electoral Act as amended, section 78 (1) (7) (2), “the commission shall have power to deregister political parties on the following grounds: For failure to win presidential, governorship election or a seat in the National or State Assembly election.”
From INEC records, the following political parties were able to win at least one state House of Assembly seat: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Accord Party, Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Peoples Democratic Congress (PDC).

Of the registered political parties, 30 of them took part in the elections that ended with the governorship and state Assembly elections, while others did not field candidates at all, while the rest were complacent unlike in the previous general election.
The amended Electoral Act gives INEC power to deregister any political party that did not win a single seat at the state House of Assembly election.

PDP, as the leading political party, has spread in all the six geo-political zones at both the National Assembly and the Houses of Assembly including the South-west, while the ACN won mainly in the South-west and a few places outside the zone.
LP has its representations both at the National and State Assembly in Ondo State, while ANPP won in Zamfara, Borno and Yobe States. The CPC won six senatorial seats in Katsina, Kano and in Nasarawa State, where it won the governorship.
APGA won a senatorial seat in Imo State and other state House of Assembly seats in some states. Accord Party won a senatorial seat in Oyo State and also some House of Representatives seats in some states, including Delta State where it won the Ika North House of Representatives seat.
PPN redeemed its name with some seats in the state House of Assembly election in Ogun State.

Some of the parties that would be visited by the INEC hammer for not winning a single seat in the state House of Assembly election include the Musa Balarabe-led People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Kalu’s PPA, Nigerian Democratic Party (NDP) and Dr. Olusola Saraki’s Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN).

At the inception of democratic election in 1998, only three political parties were registered. They are the PDP, the All Peoples Party (APP) that later transformed to the ANPP and Alliance for Democracy (AD), but with a Supreme Court ruling, it opened the flood gate for the registration of more political parties, bringing the number today to 63.

An INEC National Commissioner told THISDAY that the commission was still compiling data of the April elections and would soon commence action on the political parties that failed to meet up with the letter of the Electoral Act as amended.

I think it is about time we split this country, Gaddafi suggested that we do this and they called him a mad man, but recent developements is showing this is d inevitable thing. Those guys up north are bent on dividing this country, what is d reason for this insane violence and distruction they are perpetrating!! i would say lets divide this country and let buhari go and rule them! even if they want to take the FCT no problem we would build another capital. buhari is saying he has no hand in this violence but if my memory is not failing me i remember he was the one saying during his campaign rallies that his supporters should lynch anyone that tries to rig the election,even his vice bakare was saying the same thing and thats what his supporters are exactly doing now, and he is here saying he is not part of this violence.
if it is in a strict country he will be arrested and charged for inciting violence and crime against humanity with all the death that has occured, but if jonathan does that they will say buhari is a political prisoner and dat will start a civil war in nigeria, very sad.

Ok lets try and see their complains, they said a computer program was used to reduce their votes in d southsouth and south east! which is very laughable, were they expecting to win in d south south and south east, probably buhari should win jonathan in bayelsa, insane!!
ok even if they say that buhari won in those states atleast jonathan would still have d required 25% votes in each of the 31 states he had the 25% votes counted, if people votes that didn't vote for buhari in those states were dashed to d crying baby buhari, jonathan would still win cause he was leading in d vote counts if u add up every vote in d whole country!

Buhari should just take his bunch of animals and go and rule them up north. Period!!

Ex-governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, has been extradited from Dubai to the United Kingdom.

Online medium, Saharareporters, said Ibori was extradited on Friday by the Interpol.

The report said Ibori had tried to escape extradition through ‘a series of complex legal manipulations.’

It said the former governor was re-arrested on Thursday night in his Dubai mansion and taken to an extradition processing centre from where he was later flown to the UK.

He was expected to have arrived in London at about 1 pm local time (2 pm Nigerian time).

Saharareporters learnt from UAE government sources that the former governor was accompanied by officers of the UK Metropolitan Police Proceeds of Crimes Unit.

Ibori will face three separate trials in the UK relating to money laundering and theft.

Some of his alleged accomplices, including his wife, Nkoyo; his sister, Christine Ibie-Ibori; and an associate, Udoamaka Okoronkwo (nee Onuigbo), are already spending prison terms in various jail houses in the UK.

On April 1, his UK lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil, was given a 10-year sentence. The sentence will run concurrently with a previous seven-year conviction.

Ibori’s extradition was finally granted in December 2010 by the Court of Cessation in Dubai, but with the aid of Nigerian officials, he made a series of attempts to escape from the UAE.

Confirming the development to SATURDAY PUNCH on Friday, spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said, “The eventual extradition of former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori from Dubai to UK today (Friday) is a welcome development and a warning signal to others who do everything to slow down the wheel of criminal prosecution in Nigeria that justice can only be delayed, it can never be denied.”

Also confirming it to SATURDAY PUNCH, the spokesman for the British High Commission, Mr. Hooman Nouruzi, said in an SMS, “Yes, Mr. Ibori has been extradited to the UK from the UAE. He is in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Service.”

Thats the final scene of the whole movie, with mistress, wife, lawyer,sister all already jailed, the lord of Money laundering is coming home to join them!! grin

The controversy over the Anambra Central Senatorial District election has been laid to rest.

Ex-Governor Chris Nwabueze Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (AC N) was last night declared the winner.

Returning Officer Dr. Alex Anene announced that Ngige polled 68,208 votes to defeat his closest rival, former Minister of Information Prof. Dora Akunyili, who scored 68,164 votes.

Mrs. Akunyili ran on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Senator Annie Okonkwo of the Accord Party (AP) scored 23,346 votes. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate scored 18,578. Two people, Oguguo Okoye and Chudi Offodile, are battling for the PDP ticket.

The Returning Officer, who announced the result at the Tourist Gardens Hotel in Awka under tight security, said he had all authentic results duly written on Form EC8.

“No one else has the authority to declare the result of this election. No result was cancelled; all of them are intact”, he said.

A big row had broken out over the result as Mrs. Akunyili and Ngige claimed victory in the election.

Anene on Sunday alleged that his life was in danger and vowed to quit the job.

He said he was offered N10million, a duplex and a car to announce the result in favour of Akunyili, instead of Ngige, who, he said, won.

Last night, Anene said he wanted to complete his assignment.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukogu, had earlier announced the cancellation of elections in 10 wards across four local government areas. He ordered a rerun. He also announced Prof. Charles Esimonye as the new Returning Officer who would handle the rerun poll after Anene’s alleged resignation.

Onukaogu said areas where the rerun election would take place are: Enugwu-Ukwu Ward I; Nimo Ward I and III; Nri Ward II, which has two units; Obosi; - Umunachi; Nkpor and Umuoji.

The wards are in Idemili North, Idemili South, Dunukofia and Njikoka local governments.

Onukogu said he canceled the elections in the four local government areas following protest from Ngige.

Charles Odedo of the ACN had earlier declared winner of the election in Idemili North/South federal constituency.

Akunyili last night declined to comment on the declaration of the ex-governor as winner of the election.

A lady who described herself as the Personal Assistant to Akunyili said on the telephone that her principal “is not the right person to answer this question.”

“If you listened to news this night (yesterday) you would have heard the results that were announced. That is what we know,” she said.

Victory at last, looser should shake hands with winner
