Mr Hashim is very correct about our power sector reforms law. Nigeria's problem is not laws. We have good laws already. All we need is implementation of those laws that's what he his talking about. As a person whose company produce 500 megawatts of electricity for Nigeria, he knows better |
Gbenga Olawepo and Fela Durotoye: The clash of new political titans Democracy activists like Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Alhaji Balarabe Musa who championed the right for individuals to form political parties would probably be amused by the emergence of 91 political parties in the country. Now the soundness or otherwise of the parties is turning into an issue. Within nine months between December 2017 and last August, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, registered 44 political parties bringing the number of political parties in the country to 91. Fela-Durotoye and Gbenga Olawepo Of the 44 newly registered political parties only few could have compared with the Alliance for New Nigeria, ANN, which was seen as one of the most potent threats to the existing two-party domination of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The ANN had styled itself as a party of technoticians, meaning, a group of professionals who had devoted themselves to positively changing their political environment. However, less than a year after the party was registered, the enthusiasm that followed the birth of the party is now being enveloped by controversy. The party was championed by Dr. Jay Osi Samuels, a health entrepreneur and some like-minded professionals who believed that they could help change the narrative of politics being a bad game. However, less than a year into the road, even the professionals have been caught in the bug with the ANN being seen by some as just another political party. Now the party has produced two presidential candidates from parallel conventions with the acclaimed motivational speaker, Fela Durotoye emerging in one convention and Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim emerging in another convention. FD as he is popularly called emerged at a convention conducted by Mr. Emmanuel Dania who succeeded Samuels as national chairman. However, that convention was marred by issues, notably the absence of a quorum with only seven states in attendance whereas the party has presence in 28 states. By the regulations, a valid convention should have had at least 19 states. The way the convention was organised led to suspicions about a hidden agenda. The former chairman of the party, Dr. Osi Samuels, was said to have impressed upon Dania the need to do the needful by organizing first, ward, local government congresses before going ahead with the national convention that would produce the presidential candidate of the party. “It got to a point I had to ask Dania if he had other motives for insisting on organizing the presidential primary of the party,” Samuels told Vanguard. “He was claiming that since we had submitted a letter to INEC, it meant we had to go ahead. I told him that was no big deal that all we needed to do was send a letter to INEC informing them of the postponement. I even took him to INEC office not knowing he was going ahead with the script of those who were sponsoring him to destroy ANN.” The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Akin Oyebanji, told Vanguard that what Dania and his team did could not stand any legal scrutiny. He said at least, for them to have a presidential convention that could be respected by the law, at least 19 of the 28 states where ANN had already registered presence must be represented. It was indeed surprising because Durotoye was absent at the August 10 national convention that produced Dania as national chairman. “It was strange that Durotoye and Dania later became best of friends,” a member of the party told Vanguard. It was against the background of these developments that a new national convention was held after the majority of the members of the National Executive Committee, NEC met and removed Dania as national chairman and brought back Samuels to the position of national chairman. The convention ratified his candidature through a voice vote following the earlier withdrawal of another presidential aspirant, Alhaji Ibrahim Eyitayo Dan-Musa. Other presidential aspirants who had earlier indicated interest in the party’s ticket did not present themselves for screening by the party. The convention also ratified the strategic alliance between ANN and another political party, Peoples Trust, PT, in the single-minded mission of rescuing Nigeria. Before the ratification of the candidature of Olawepo-Hashim, the convention had approved the expulsion of the suspended national chairman of the party, Pastor Emmanuel Dania and the deputy national secretary, Mr. Osita Okonkwo for alleged anti-party activities. In Dania’s stead, the pioneer national chairman of the ANN, Dr. Jay Osi-Samuels, who had at the last convention of the party in Abuja stepped aside, returned to the position and was ratified by the convention. Olawepo-Hashim, who was elated at the decision by the delegates to elect him unopposed, said on the occasion witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that he was more than ever committed to the mission to rescue Nigeria from the stranglehold of underdevelopment and economic backwardness. He said he would vigorously pursue the mandate given to him by the party, promising to deploy it to unite Nigeria, create jobs and put a smile on the faces of Nigerians. According to him, “Our people are tired of poverty; they want jobs, training for unskilled youths, support for farmers as well as the young and the old. “There is no time for small boys’ politics on the way to the Promised Land,” Olawepo-Hashim said, “there are political generals in this party, and we will not surrender to political boys’ scouts and girls’ guides.” Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/10/gbenga-olawepo-and-fela-durotoye-the-clash-of-new-political-titans/ |

We won’t allow external forces to take over ANN – Samuels National Chairman of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Dr. Jay Osi Samuels, in this interview, speaks on issues within the party and why it can only get stronger against those who want to reap where they did not sow. TEMITOPE OGUNBANKE reports There is controversy over the formation of your party, Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN). Can you throw light on how the party was founded and those behind it? Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) came about with the meeting of young and patriotic Nigerians, professionals, doctors, engineers, lawyers, among others, who were concerned about the state of decadence of governance in Nigeria and we felt it was right for us to play our role even though most of us have not been involved in politics. We felt that we can’t just sit on the side line and be complaining instead of being part of the process. We were appalled by the state of the nation and the fact that leadership has been left for too long in the hands of career politicians, who are only interested in periodic elections. Besides, we professionals and the so-called technocrats hardly show interest in politics. And when these career politicians get into offices, their actions and inactions always affect us; most times, negatively. So, a group of us started coming together. We were initially 10 in number, but with time, we expanded with the original founding members of ANN, we are 10 and we cut across all professions and age. The 10 founding members of ANN are myself, Dr Dale Ogunbayo, Dr Nkatachukwu, Victor Odoeme, Aesosa Osaghae, Thompson Nsima, Sunny Famojuro, Adebola Adekoya, Amos Musa and Steven Odesomi. I happen to be one of the oldest among our group at that time. We all played different roles in the formation of the party, but one of the common understanding that we had in the beginning was that ANN will be a party that will belong to no one, a party that every member, whether you are just joining or you have been a member from the very beginning, you can claim to be a member or an owner of the party provided you are a financial member. That was the underlying principle and guideline that set out ANN. So, ANN belongs to every Nigerian that is a financial member of the party, but one thing we are clear about is that we would not allow people with special interests to be involved in the party, whether openly or discretely. People are asking questions about what led to the current crisis in the party, starting from the August convention? The crisis or the controversy that we are witnessing in the party right now actually predates the August convention. It actually started last year. The gentleman that I just mentioned his name, Adebola Adekoya, sometime last year, without my knowledge had been making some underground moves, which actually came to the open in January this year. And it all boils down to the fact that he has been laying claims to be the owner and founder of ANN, which was against the tenets and purpose of the party. There was never a time that we said ANN belongs to anybody and if at all ANN was to belong to anybody, I should be the one to be laying claim to own ANN. But ANN belongs to nobody and he has no right to claim ownership of ANN. Along the line, we found out that he was being pushed by some people at the background. They were sponsoring him and making him cause all those troubles. He tried to divide the party, but by the special grace of God, we managed to arrest that process at that time. However, some of these things were still lingering by the time we did our convention last August. One thing that we didn’t reckon with was that the people, the powerful forces that were behind him were not relenting because what became very obvious was that his own style or the way he went about executing the mission that he was sent was very crude and brash and maybe, they decided to re-strategise and use a more subtle way. But without bragging, I have been responsible for 90 per cent of the funding of ANN. Apart from the financial resources that have been put in place, my time, my everything was involved. I am like a one man battalion running ANN. So, in the lead up to the convention, I was tired, weary and I didn’t think I was ready to continue as chairman. That was why in the build-up to the convention, when a certain gentleman called Emmanuel Dania came forward and said he wanted to be chairman even though I had some misgivings in the back of my head, I was kind of happy that at least somebody was coming on board to take over from me. That was why I gladly stepped down. But, subsequent events after that have come clear to me that he was actually planted in the party by those same forces with the aim of hijacking the party and that’s what led to the crisis or controversial issues of whether or not we had our primaries. But, by the special grace of God, we have intervened and those things have been arrested and we are moving forward as a party. Why do you think those forces you talked about wanted to hijack or take control of the party right from the onset? It is because they have their own agenda. Though I have an idea of what the agenda was, I don’t think I am ready to go public with it at this point. On the issue of Fela Durotoye, he has been laying claim to the party’s presidential ticket and it was also reported that some members of the Board of Trustee (BoT) upheld the primary that produced him. Who are these BOT members and are they really members of ANN? Well, we have members of Board of Trustees (BOT), but why I don’t want to join issues is that these are my colleagues and friends, some of them are fellow founders, with whom we started the party together. But why I don’t join issues with the BoT members that has been supporting or issuing press releases in support of Fela Durotoye is because apart from the fact that some of them are supporting Durotoye, some of them are acting in ignorance. Half of the things I know, they don’t know. If they know, they won’t be acting that way Why don’t you put them in the know? It’s happening gradually. In fact, as at now, most them that I have spoken with know, but they will not come out open because they know what is right and wrong for the party. Some people have accused Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim of coming to hijack the party. How would you react to that? They are acting in ignorance. There is so much false information out there. I think the problem a lot of people have with Olawepo-Hashim is because he was a founding member of PDP and that’s the sword they are dangling on his neck. But, in terms of the ideological perception or belief in ANN, some of these people claiming to be ANN members don’t come anything as close to Olawepo-Hashim in the ideology and belief of a new Nigeria that we are championing in ANN. So, I hope he can handle himself, but I just know that a lot of these complaints are based on ignorance. Our mission as a political party is to provide a level playing ground for any aspirant on our platform, but we needed to build that platform and we needed everybody to play their role. You cannot want to benefit from that platform without doing anything to strengthen it. In what way has Olawepo-Hashim strengthened the party? One of the things that make a party strong is people because they say politics is a game of number. You can have all the methodology, but without having the number, you can’t win. Olawepo-Hashim came on board with people from all across the country, strengthening the already existing platforms. Beyond that, he offers valuable advice because most of us are novices in this game. He came with a wealth of experience and knowledge and in that way, we have been able to benefit from his experience and knowledge. More importantly, he has contributed in his own way, financially to support the party. And that is the least that is expected from all our aspirants either governorship, state Assembly or presidential aspirants. None has ever come to the party and we asked him or her to bring a certain amount of money like other parties do. We welcome them with open hands, but we expect that they should know that the party needs some support in one way or the other and Olawepo-Hashim is one person that understands that. But even at that, as much as I acknowledge that he has supported the party financially; his contribution to the party till date is not even up to 10 per cent of what I as a person have spent to get the party to where it is today. So, that’s why it’s so insulting and annoying when I hear people say outside that Olawepo-Hashim bought the party or that I have been bought. People just talk based on what they hear or rumour they hear. https://newtelegraphonline.com/2018/10/we-wont-allow-external-forces-to-take-over-ann-samuels/ |

DEFENDING A PEOPLE: ADDICTED TO SUFFERING (1) by Miriam Yakubu Many years ago, I wanted to be a nurse but requirement was to be a certified nursing aide with 3 months experience in hospital environment. So I register for a 2 weeks nursing aide classes. I was new in town, don't know my way around and don't know a whole bunch of stuff. I was late on my first day to class, because I mistakenly dropped two busstop short. And instead of taking the next bus with my day pass, I walked it. Into a class already in session, I walked in front of the whole class, towards the teacher who was seated facing the door. I stood blocking the projector ray, and said "good morning Mrs. Givens." "Please call me Tina, get a seat and good morning" she gnarled, as she motioned towards empty seats at the back, and turned her face swiftly back to her slides. MY THINKING: Instead of walking quietly to a seat, I wanted to greet my teacher; good morning, explain why I was late, and apologise. And probably wait for her to decide whether to allow me join the class or send me back home. And I am quite sure, if she had asked me to stretch out my hands for two strokes of canes, I would have done it without a question. That's the life I know. At the back, I sat close to Laura, originally from Long Island; NY. Somehow we became friends. We went for breaks together and we talked after classes. Class was going great; or so I thought, until on the fifth day when Gina announced with much and very long apology, that due to personal emergency, the school will wrap up on the 7th day instead of the 10th day. The whole class went wild except me. I didn't see anything wrong, even if she had said the school will close five days early. And even seven days early. Or no class at all, take your certificate of attendance and go home. Their thinking: But the class resisted and insisted we spend the 10 days or the school refund 3days registration fee. And boom, all other complaints followed suit. "Why are we so crowded in the class?" Asked Laura. We have 30 students here instead of the 15 as stated on your website? She added angrily. "For the past two days, we were given one break time instead of two breaks, for what?" Asked another student. "You talk too fast, you skip slides and you are not diligent, taken us for some shit?" Asked another. "You are a very rude person, look at the way you treated Miriam on the first day?" Added Laura. On hearing my name, I almost jumped out of my seat to fight Laura. But I was too paralyse with fear of what the teacher will do. As complaints filled the air in the classroom, I was totally lost and very much upset with the class. How can they be so inconsiderate, I thought to myself. I couldn't see what the fuss was about. Meanwhile, I was filled with gratitude, for I merely filled out form, paid a fee, and got admitted. Plus, I came in late, but Gina took me under her wings and not abuse me or demean me. The class is implacably neat. The chairs and tables are unbelievably sturdy and glossy. There are no cracks on the chairs to pinch my butt. No lose nails to snag threads off my clothes. The glossy walls wont stain my elbows. The rich coffee station down the hallway, the free cookies in the cookie jar on Gina's table, and the no smelly toilets. In fact, I ate part of my chocolate inside the toilet while I was hand washing. To show my happiness, I could have carried Gina on my back and walked her home. I was full of pity for poor Gina to have to deal with such nuisance. While I was lost in my wild thoughts, the class got crazier that Gina had to call in the supervisor. Who of course, agreed with the students wholeheartedly and agreed to all demands. But for me, I stopped talking to Laura for been so bitchy to have started all these noise against a nice teacher. My stand startled Laura beyond words. It is me, Miriam Yakubu Ikunaiye saying to Laura, forgive me for my standard of demands and accountability was very low some 25 years ago. I was a certified addicted sufferer, who belongs to a people contended with wallowing in misery. Watch out for the next https://mrrightsng..com/2018/10/defending-people-addicted-to-suffering.html |

Kwara Freedom is unstoppable in 2019, says Kwara Must Change https://mrrightsng..com/2018/10/kwara-freedom-is-unstoppable-in-2019.html Kwara Must Change, the leading pro-Democracy group in Kwara State wishes to acknowledge and congratulate Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, winner of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship primary election which was held on Saturday, 6th October 2018. With the emergence of Abdulrahman as the leader of Kwara freedom struggle, Kwara Must Change is assured that ‘’Kwara freedom is unstoppable in 2019’’. The emergence of Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is a welcome development and we believe the candidate has all it takes to deliver victory come 2019 if we all support him. We therefore urge all members of the freedom struggle to put our collective interest ahead of their individual interest. Abdulrahman’s commitment to the Kwara liberation struggle is not in doubt, his contribution to the struggle is well documented and his passion and consistency is unrivaled. For the first time in history, the people of Kwara State were given the opportunity to choose who to lead the Kwara freedom struggle and through a popular vote casted in the 16 local government areas and 193 wards of the state, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq was chosen by the people. Kwara Must Change stand by the will of the people of Kwara. Although, there might have been some avoidable irregularities in the process, but notwithstanding, the victory is not less seminal and Abdulrahman’s acceptability is unquestionable. It is our view that, the decision of the people of Kwara State to choose Abdulrazaq over other equally qualified aspirants is just a matter of preference. However, since there can only be one candidate, Abdulrazaq Abdulrahman is that one true candidate and we urge all other aspirants to throw their weight behind the candidate and deliver freedom for Kwara in 2019 once and for all. In view of the situation, Kwara Must Change shall be hosting a unity press conference in conjunction with all youth stakeholders, aspirants support structures, civil society organizations and community elders in a date that may be announced shortly.
