2019: Obasanjo’s Party, 2 Others Form Strategic Alliance To Oust PMB

In a desperate move to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) led by President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections, three political parties, namely Peoples Trust (PT) Alliance of New Nigeria (ANN) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) formed by Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday, sealed what they termed a strategic alliance and transformed into a new party called Alliance for Peoples Trust (APT) at the national convention held in Lagos.

The exercise, which was attended by national officers of PT and ANN and witnessed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later produced Gbenga Olawepo-Hassim as the new APT presidential candidate.

Olawepo, who has already picked the presidential ticket of ANN, emerged as APT flag bearer, after Funke Obafemi Awolowo, the granddaughter of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was the sole presidential aspirant on PT platform announced her withdrawal from the race.

The exercise, which was also the first ever national convention of PT, equally witnessed the change of the party logo to a yellow/white/green flag containing two raised fingers in the middle.

Olawepo Hassim, who was later presented, handed over the flag of the party as its flag bearer. And in his acceptance speech, lauded Funke for the singular act, describing her as a worthy granddaughter of the sage.



He also commended the APT national chairman, Mr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) and the founding national chairman of ANN, Dr J. Osi Samuels, for putting a platform that was out to make Nigeria realise her dream of a better country.

The newly elected APT presidential candidate, lamented that those ruling the country now were mere beneficiaries of the struggle to liberate the country from the iron grip of the military, but which they did not participate in like he did, alongside some people, including the late Chima Ubani.

Giving an insight into what sought of programmes he was set to implement if voted into office come 2019, Hassim said he was poised to build a Nigeria of equal opportunity, with jobs made available to all in need of them and a Nigeria that would support the dreams and aspirations of her people.”

Prominent political parties under the third force movement namely Peoples Trust, African Democratic Congress and Alliance for New Nigeria have formed a strategic pact to wrest power from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Under the new arrangement, the political parties involved have adopted the Alliance for Peoples Trust as their new name.


The decision was reached at a national convention organised by the group in Lagos on Saturday.

This was contained in a statement signed by the National Secretary of the APT, Mallam Nasser Kura, which was sent to The PUNCH via email, on Sunday.

Kura also said Lady Funke Awolowo stepped down for presidential hopeful, Olawepo–Hashim.


Also at the event, a legal luminary and pro-democracy activist, Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), was elected as the National Chairman and an energy expert/political strategist, Dr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as a presidential candidate.

In his acceptance speech, Olawepo-Hashim described himself as a detribalised Nigerian and was prepared to lead the new ballot driven– Permanent Voter Cards revolution of the third force movement in order to build a new democratic Nigeria come 2019.


The highpoints of the national convention and Presidential primaries were the elections of substantive national executives of APT to be chaired by Agbakoba, change of name of the People’s Trust, PT, as the umbrella political party of the third force to Alliance for People’s Trust.

The party’s logo was changed from a “pyramid” to “a hand of victory sign in green, white and yellow flag.” APT flag was handed over to Olawepo-Hashim to represent the third force in the 2019 elections


The national convention was attended by leaders of other allied political parties and movement. They include Dr Jay Samuels, founding Chairman of ANN; Mallam Nasser Kura, National Secretary of APT; Comrade Isa Tijani, Deputy National Chairman of ANN; Lady Funke Awolowo, who was later elected the Treasurer of APT, and Olawale Okunniyi, the Director General of Nigeria Intervention Movement.

Others include Chief Mrs Olivia Agbajoh, a second republic federal legislator and senatorial candidate of APT in Delta State and Musibahu Jarfaru from Kano among others.

That is a state's affair. If you aren't involved in state politics you may not know most of those that came out to contest.

This is a new political party. The name Olawepo has never featured in any national discourse of national struggle.

It's like the dude just materialized from thin air.

For example, Durotoye, people have heard his name and know him for some things. Same also for Sowore as owner of Sahara Reporters and activist going all the way back to MKO era.

But Olawepo. Who knows him? What has he done?

It means you don't really know about Nigerian politics.

Olawepo is the student leader who led Anti Sap rally against ibb's military government. He his the youngest member of g34 that brought democracy in 1999. He his a former national publicity Secretary of pdp.

But he left pdp in 2003, after he disagree with obasanjo. He his a man of principle.

His private company currently produce about 500 megawatts of electricity for Nigeria.

“I grew under the tutelage of my grandfather, this is a dream come true for papa that I am getting involved in politics and fighting for a paradym shift for a better country that we have right now,” she said.

While expressing appreciation to the party delegates, the presidential aspirant said it was quite evident that they were all ready and involved to cause a change in the way the country was being run currently, declaring: “I pray that we would get there one day and be relevant.”

Announcing her withdrawal, she said: “I am going to step down for my brother, Gbenga Olawepo Hassim. Just for affirmation, I am stepping down for my brother, Ghenga to emerge the presidential candidate of APT.”

“I would not be president of Nigeria that would allow killings of Nigerians. I would not be president of a section of Nigeria but president of the entire Nigeria. There would be consequence for anyone that takes the lives of Nigerians.

“We cannot give Nigeria to apprentice politicians. The next election is about capacity, about competence,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the APT National Secretary, Malam Nasir Kura, while assuring that the party would win the 2019 poll and formed the next government, said the country needed a change, a paradym shift, adding that it was when this was brought about that there would be development in the country.

He lamented that Nigerians had been “imprisoned by those who are just experimenting with our lives and we are saying no to that.”

“We are tired of retired generals and old people of 70years and above. That is why we are saying there must be change and we have people who have the records, the mental capability and integrity to lead us.

“All we need to do is to give them the moral support to make them emerge and deliver,” Kura said.

The National Secretary of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Sahid Umar, has vowed to petition the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, over alleged forging of his signature in the Certificate of Nomination allegedly issued to Fela Durotoye making him the presidential candidate of the party.

The party had claimed that the said certificate was fake and has called on Nigerians to disregard it.


In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Akinloye Oyeniyi, the party was aware that few elements within the party already congregated themselves into day-to-day runners of the party, usurping the functions of some organs of the party, especially the National Working Committee (NWC) and discharging them unilaterally with fake signatures; one of which is the said certificate of return.

“ANN thereby dissociates itself from all these elements’ actions especially the recent purported certificate in circulation due to signatures not regular with any of its national officers,” Oyeniyi said.

Mr Rights has gathered that People’s Trust, a mega party led by former president of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), which has members and political groups, including the Third Force led by former president Olusegun Obasanjo has identified the Presidential candidate of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Mr Gbenga Olawepo Hashim as a possible presidential candidate of the third force, sources claimed.

The third force coalition is holding a meetings today and tomorrow in Lagos, Nigeria to resolve on the candidate of the coalition.

In a statement by the party’s national secretary, Mallam Naseer Kura, the party’s first national convention, billed for today and tomorrow in Lagos, would be headlined by Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka.

Recall that on 3rd October 2018, 593 delegates of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) at its national convention held in Abuja endorsed Olawepo Hashim as its authentic presidential candidate. The party also ratified its strategic Alliance with Peoples Trust with a sounding voice vote.
Additionally, ANN also revealed at the convention that, at least 7 other political parties are currently in discussion with its leadership on possible strategic alliance ahead of the 2019 general election.

Some of the notable figures in the Peoples Trust coalition are the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’abba; former military governor of Kaduna State, Col Abubarkar Dangiwa Umar, and former minister of education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili.

Other leaders of thought who are expected to deliver goodwill messages and solidarity speeches at the convention are the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Waaba; president of United Labour Congress, Comrade Ajearo; convener of Summit of the Alternatives (SOTA), Dr Oby Ezekwesili; executive director of the Awolowo Foundation, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo- Dosumu; former Speaker Ghali Umar Na’aba; former military governor of Kaduna State, Col Abubarkar Dangiwa Umar; son of former Prime Minister of Nigeria, Dr Abduljalil Tafawa Balewa, and son of former Biafran leader, Chief Debe Odumegwu Ojukwu, among others.

Sources that spoke with MrRights stated that, even though the third force coalition had not concluded on the presidential candidate ahead of 2019, ANN presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo Hashim is the most likely candidate to be adopted because of the credibility of the candidate and seriousness of the ANN.

The source noted further that, apart from APC and PDP, the only party truly ready for 2019 is ANN and with the support of the third force coalition, Hashim can truly be the game changer.

FD donated 1.75m to the party when all he is obliged to is his membership dues and you are complaining? He also stated that his dream was to build a credible platform for Fela and others to contest, so why not build the platform and stop complaining that he did not contribute to building the party? You sold him a form and collected his money and now you are trying to push him out. In sane countries, Political parties rely on donations from businesses and individuals as party dues is not enough to fund elections.

FELA didn't do anything to warrant the party wanting him,because even before he joined the party, he only wanted the ticket, not a fair contest.

Hashim came to the party without any condition, he his a true democrat. He did everything to strengthen the party. He supported the party to exist where it is not existing.

Some of the people who came through Hashim work for the party at state level. Creating structures in every local government and wards.

This is why 22 out of 27 states are with Hashim.

It is impossible for Fela to defeat such a candidate in any free contest. He knows that,hence the drama.

The National Chairman of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Dr. Jay Osi-Samuels has narrated how the party was rescued from highjackers and godfathers, saying it was not an easy task dealing with political and so called spiritual godfathers.

" If i open my mouth and speak, Nigeria will boil'' he says.


In a speech he delivered at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Wednesday, he said the party which is ideologically different from others suddenly found itself in the hands of godfathers, some of whom had hidden under the banner of church spiritual fathers.

He further explained that forces of godfathers would have succeeded as a result of moles they planted in the party, but some genuine members within the fold stood up in defence of the party and its ideology.


“Some powerful forces were surreptitiously working to disintegrate the party, they planted moles into the party and they almost succeeded in hijacking the structure of the party.”

Dr. Osi-Samuels further said forces against the party began to malign his name when they could not succeed in disintegrating the party.

“My name has been maligned even to the highest political level in this country, but I’m not deterred,” he said.


He commended the party’s president aspirant, Gbenga Hashim-Olawepo for his contribution and for offering himself to contest the Presidential election in the party in 2019.

“There is a man that we have been talking since February and if you remove the persons, we will not have what we call Alliance for New Nigeria and that person is Olugbenga Olawepo Hashim.”

The Congress affirmed the sacking of the party’s former National Chairman, Emmanuel Daniel through a voice votes.

The affirmation was after Dr. Osi-Samuels dispelled rumours making the rounds that the ANN has been factionalized.

“I hate hearing people saying that ANN has been factionalized. There is no faction of ANN anywhere”, he insisted.

Talking about an aspirant of the party who claimed to be candidate, Dr Samuel said they can't reap,where they didn't sow.

"People who contributed nothing to the party when it needed them most cannot suddenly jump out from nowhere and claim to be candidate of the party " he said.

He commended Olawepo Hashim for his determination, as the 593 delegates endorsed him as presidential candidate of the ANN.
