**Why do some Nigerian online stores get traffic but no sales?** I've noticed something interesting with online businesses. Some stores seem to get decent traffic from Instagram, Facebook, Google, WhatsApp and ads, but the number of actual orders remains surprisingly low. It got me thinking about where the problem usually happens. A few things come to mind: **1. The customer doesn't trust the store** People may visit the website but hesitate to make payment if the business doesn't look established. No physical address, unclear contact information, poor product images or a website that looks abandoned can create doubt. **2. The website is difficult to use** If customers have to struggle to find products, understand prices, add items to cart or complete checkout, many will simply leave. Especially on mobile. **3. Delivery information isn't clear** A customer may like a product but still abandon the purchase because they don't know: * How much delivery costs * How long delivery takes * Whether their location is covered * How returns work **4. Too many payment problems** If the checkout process is complicated or a customer's preferred payment method isn't available, the sale can disappear quickly. **5. The product page isn't convincing** Getting someone to the website is only half the job. The product page has to answer the questions a customer would normally ask: Is it genuine? What size is available? What exactly will I receive? How much is delivery? Can I return it? **6. The traffic may simply be the wrong traffic** This one is easy to overlook. You can spend money on ads and get thousands of visitors, but if you're showing the product to people who aren't actually interested in buying it, traffic won't translate into sales. **7. People may not be ready to buy immediately** Someone visiting today doesn't necessarily mean they are ready to purchase today. This is where follow-ups, remarketing, email, WhatsApp and good content can make a difference. Personally, I think many Nigerian businesses focus heavily on **getting people to their website**, while not spending enough time asking: > **“What happens after the person arrives?”** Traffic is important, but conversion is where the business actually makes money. For those already selling online: **What do you think is the biggest reason Nigerian customers abandon an online purchase?** |
I’ve been looking at the different types of businesses that are moving online in Nigeria, and it’s interesting how many different categories can actually work with an online store. Some obvious ones are: 1. **Fashion & Clothing** – clothes, shoes, bags, native wear, thrift 2. **Beauty & Cosmetics** – skincare, makeup, perfumes, hair products 3. **Electronics & Gadgets** – phones, accessories, computers, smart devices 4. **Food & Bakery** – cakes, snacks, packaged food, drinks 5. **Furniture & Home Decor** – furniture, curtains, lighting, decorations 6. **Baby & Kids** – clothes, toys, baby products and accessories 7. **Jewelry & Accessories** – watches, necklaces, bracelets, sunglasses 8. **Health & Fitness** – fitness equipment, gym wear and general wellness products 9. **Automotive** – car accessories, spare parts and maintenance products 10. **Building & Home Improvement** – fittings, tools, paint and home materials 11. **Books & Educational Products** – books, learning materials and courses 12. **Agriculture & Food Products** – farm produce, processed foods and agricultural products 13. **Sports & Outdoor** – sporting equipment, jerseys and outdoor gear 14. **Phones & Computer Accessories** – chargers, cases, keyboards, power banks, etc. 15. **General Merchandise** – businesses selling different types of everyday products One thing I've noticed is that having an online store isn't necessarily about what category you are in. The important things are usually how easy it is for customers to find products, see good pictures and information, pay, and arrange delivery. I'm curious though: **What business category do you think is currently underrepresented online in Nigeria?** And for those already selling online, what category do you operate in and what has been your biggest challenge? |
