In our fast changing world, our youths need to join a community project to offer a few hours of their time as a way to move the community forward. These will expose them to meet people with different experiences, discover new skills and begin to see how individual effort can contribute to collective progress. Across the African diaspora, stories like this reflect a long tradition of people organising, serving and building together. The legacies of Kwame Nkrumah, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela remind us that Black advancement is not only personal, it also depends on unity, self-determination, civic participation and people working together for the common good. As Malcolm X is often quoted as saying, “When ‘I’ is replaced with ‘we,’ even illness becomes wellness.” Nkrumah’s words, “The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart,” speak to the power of solidarity. Garvey’s reminder that “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” highlights the importance of cultural knowledge in building a confident future. That work takes many forms. Volunteering can be one entry point, but the larger goal is to help mobilize people, skills and resources around shared priorities. Building alongside like-minded people can help individuals grow while strengthening communities and creating possibilities for future generations. In the spirit of John F. Kennedy’s call to ask what we can do for our country, each person can consider what they can contribute to the wellbeing of their community. Volunteering and community participation can help unite our people: - Develop leadership, communication and organizing skills - Build relationships and networks across communities - Support civic engagement and local initiatives - Share knowledge, experience and resources - Contribute to Black excellence and collective advancement One network working in this space is Diversity Advancement Network, which promotes civic engagement, women empowerment and Black excellence. These priorities connect individual participation with the broader work of building stronger, more empowered communities. Are you aware that employers today don’t just look for degrees, they look for initiative, adaptability, teamwork, and proof that you can create results. Your volunteering or internships provides that. Before you commit your time and energy, volunteering should be intentional, and not impulsive. Here are key things to review and ask before joining any organization: 1. Mission and Values What is the organization’s core mission? Do their values align with yours? Who do they truly serve, and how do they define impact? Can they show measurable results from past projects? 2. Leadership and Transparency Who leads the organization? Is there a board or governing structure? Healthy organizations are accountable and open about how they operate. 3. Volunteer Role Clarity What exactly will I be doing? Is there a written role description? How many hours are expected weekly or monthly? Is there flexibility? 4. Training and Support Will I receive some training? Is there a supervisor or mentor? What happens if I need help? 5. Impact and Sustainability How does this work create long-term change? Are projects sustainable or short-term fixes? How is success measured? You may want to contribute to progress, not performative activity. 6. Organizational Culture How are volunteers treated? Is there respect for youth voices? Is the environment inclusive and safe? How do they handle conflict? 7. Growth Opportunities Will I gain skills? Can I take on leadership roles? Are there networking opportunities? Volunteering should benefit the community and your personal development. 8. Legal & Safety Considerations Is the organization registered? Are there safety policies? Are background checks required (if working with children)? Legitimacy protects everyone involved. 9. Time & Financial Expectations Are volunteers expected to pay fees? Will I cover transportation or materials? Is there reimbursement for expenses, if any? Be clear about commitments upfront. 10. Reputation & Feedback What do former volunteers say? Are there testimonials? Can you speak to someone who has volunteered there? Real experiences tell the true story. Final Thought Volunteering is powerful, but it should be purposeful. Ask questions. Observe. Research. Reflect. The right organization will welcome your curiosity. It's about Time We Stop Asking And Join Others To Build What We Are All Waiting For. We can't dream forever! Across Africa and throughout Black communities worldwide, the future isn’t something that will simply arrive, it’s something we must create ourselves as it's obvious if we don't then no one would. Instead of joining others to complain, why not join those that are making a difference. Becoming as great as China and America may sound unbelievable due to how some of our religious and political leaders have over promised, instead of leading with realistic milestones. Our communities are rich in culture, resilience, brilliance, and untapped potential. Yet too many young people are waiting for opportunities that never seem to come. What if you became the opportunity? Volunteering in a community non-profit isn’t just about giving your time. It’s about building schools of thought, making impact, safe spaces, mentorship pipelines, creative hubs, tech access, health awareness, economic empowerment, and providing hope where it’s needed most. It’s about rewriting narratives and reclaiming power for now and the future. Be intentional about it and in the long-run it will work out fine for you as well. The Is Your Chance To Put Your Skills Into Meaningful Use By: 1) - Leading projects that matter to society. 2) - Gain real-world experience that employers respect. 3) - Build networks with purpose-driven peers. 4) - Turn your passion into measurable impact. 5) - Join to shape programs, and possibilities for the next generation. Remember that movements don’t start in boardrooms. They start with young people who care enough to act. If you’ve ever said, “Someone should do something,” this is your moment to realize that someone is you. Your energy. Your voice. Your skills. Your vision. Volunteer. Organize. Empower. Transform. Let's talk and get more perspectives. All viewpoints are welcome. You should join because the future of Africa and the global Black communities deserves builders and not bystanders. For Example: Here is a very good organization to volunteer your time and skills. Usually a few hours weekly - www.DiversityAdvancement.com - If you like what they do, then email to introduce yourself or share your resume to show interest via DiversityAdvancement@gmail.com Here are some professional volunteer ideas: Graphic design, admin assistant, executive assistant, web designer, social media assistant, etc.
