PoliticsRe: Timi Frank Gives FG 48 Hour Ultimatum To Release Farotimi by blacknp(m): 12:01pm On Dec 05, 2024
JohnMo2:
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday, gave the Federal and Ekiti State Government 48 hours to release a human rights lawyer, Dr. Dele Farotimi from remand or face mass protests.

Frank who made this call in a statement in reaction to the remand of Farotimi, called on Nigerians to occupy all police stations and formations in the country should the government fail to release the rights activist unconstitutionally within the stipulated time beginning from when he was remanded.

An Ekiti State Chief Magistrates Court, Ado Ekiti Division, had on Wednesday, ordered the remand of Farotimi, in the state’s correctional centre.

Farotimi was arraigned in court over alleged defamation of character following his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’ where he alleged, among others, that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afe Babalola, had compromised the Supreme Court.

However, Frank said there is more to the arrest and remand of Farotimi than the alleged defamation alibi.

He said the remand was a way by the Federal Government to intimidate and harass Farotimi for often criticising the anti-people policies of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He condemned the arrest and remand of Farotimi even as he condemned the police and the judiciary for turning themselves into the oppressive arm of the present administration.

According to him Farotimi doesn’t deserve his current travails because he is a man who believes in and respects the rule of law.

“Farotimi is a man of truth, a man of principle and a defender of democracy. If they believe he has done anything inappropriate, they should have invited him peacefully and he honour their invitation rather than the way he was arrested and subsequently remanded on an alleged offence that is bailable under the Nigerian law.

“This shows clearly that it is not because of the petition from Afe Babalola that is making them to give Farotimi this highly dehumanizing experience. There is more to the arrest because Farotimi is known to be a vocal critic of the government.”

Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, called on Nigerians to join in the fight to free Farotimi from remand and equally stop the government from using state institutions to oppress and suppress Nigerians speaking out against their dictatorial and hardship-inducing policies, saying, it is Farotimi today, it may be another Nigerian tomorrow.”

He quoted a German Pastor Martin Niemöller who said: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

givedemwotowoto:
The Tax Reform Bill Should be Suspended till the outstanding questions are answered, which will uncover the true motive behind the tax reform.

They say the tax reform will help low VAT generating states to earn more VAT share. To make this claim, they must have data to back it up. Can we see the data?

For example, Abia state generated N663 million VAT in August but after revenue share, they received N5 billion naira. Show me data that shows that when companies in Abia pay VAT to Abia and not their headquarters in Lagos, Abia will generate more money that will enable them get more than N5 billion naira in VAT after revenue share.

Why is this important? Because states like Abia are oil producing states in the country. If their oil revenue is distributed to other states, but when those states who benefited from their oil earn high VAT and you want them to keep most of their VAT, it’s not fair to oil producing states.

Lagos currently earns about 56% of VAT nationwide and they claim that VAT reform will make states earn more. No doubt that’s true, but how much increase are we talking about? Don’t be surprised they have already calculated it and they know that after reforms, it won’t move much needle, Lagos may even get more than it gets now after revenue share, but because it sounds nice to the ear that states will earn much more and get more share if companies pay to them instead of Lagos, some people are already supporting what they don’t know much about. Let us see the data you used to come to that conclusion, that’s all we’re asking.

I made a post explaining how the current oil revenue share compares with the proposed VAT revenue share:

Dalohad:
The Judicial system is corrupt from top to bottom.
Finding an incorruptible judge is like looking for a virgin prostitute. A needle in a haystack situation..

Wike himself exposed the Judiciary with the way he has openly romanced them..

Top lawyers who have worn landmark judgements like Wole Olanipekun and other SANs have exposed as big time bribers of Judicial officers and judges.

The confidence in the Judiciary is at the lowest ebb.. One of the biggest eye opener was the Imo Guber Supreme court verdict given by Justices led by JSC Kekere-Ekun.

A case where a candidate who came 4th in an election was declared the winner of the Imo Guber election. That judgement was so distateful and evil that Imo State- a once peaceful and homely state, became enveloped by a conflagration never before seen in the annals of its history, till today. Even the Supreme-court appointed 'Governor' could not feel safe and afford to close his eyes for a simple rest at the Douglas house in Owerri. He practically rules from Abuja.

He is arguably the only Governor that goes around with armoured tanks and soldiers as part of his entourage at the cost of the state coffers. Says so much about his acclaimed popularity. Armed Non-state actors, insist that the 'Governor' will not rule the state in peace.

The price of stealing a mandate is enormously high and distateful, and has cost the lives of thousands of Imo citizens who have fallen to the bullets and bombs of both Army and the Non State actors.

Nigeria must decide whether democracy is really designed for it, or that Nigeria is designed for democracy..

All in all, water will find its level in the long run.

I stand with Dele Farotimi .
You done find out the prison wey them hold am?

PoliticsRe: National Assembly Passes Bill For Life Imprisonment For Drug Traffickers by blacknp(m): 3:40am On Nov 22, 2024
Sweetphronesis:
In an effort to combat drug-related crimes, the National Assembly has amended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act, imposing life imprisonment for drug offenders and traffickers.

This follows the Senate and House of Representatives' adoption of the harmonised report on the amendment.
Senator Tahir Monguno, Chairman of the Senate Conference Committee, presented the report, stating that the amendment introduces stricter penalties to deter drug crimes.

“Any person who unlawfully engages in the storage, custody, movement, carriage or concealment of dangerous drugs or controlled substances and, while doing so, is armed with an offensive weapon or disguised in any manner, commits an offence under this Act and is liable, upon conviction, to life imprisonment,” Monguno said.

The Senate endorsed the amendment via a voice vote during Thursday’s plenary, which was presided over by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

Additionally, the Senate passed the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission Bill, 2024, aimed at replacing the 2004 RMAFC Act. Yahaya Abdullahi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs, stressed the need for the commission’s reform, citing Nigeria's declining revenue and growing population.

“The Act, last revised over 20 years ago, no longer reflects Nigeria’s evolving economic realities. This bill proposes additional funding and a restructured operational framework for the commission to improve its efficiency,” Abdullahi explained.

He further emphasised the need for adequate funding from the Federation Account for the RMAFC to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities effectively.

The bill, which was passed after deliberations and a majority vote, now awaits President Bola Tinubu’s assent to become law.

Bobloco:
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has again slammed President Bola Tinubu’s seemingly insatiable appetite for foreign loans.

Atiku said this against the backdrop of Thursday’s National Assembly approval of the President’s request to borrow N1.7 trillion from external sources.

The Turakin Adamawa said in a statement released in Abuja that “the recent report released by the World Bank, showing Nigeria as the third most indebted country to the International Development Association (IDA), is very concerning.

“This report is coming just when the government has already sent a proposal to the National Assembly signalling an intention to borrow an additional N1.7tn being shortfall in the 2024 budget through Euro Bonds.

“What makes this particular loan proposal even more concerning is that it is benchmarked at the exchange rate of 1 USD to N800, whereas the current exchange rate from the Central Bank of Nigeria stands at over N1,600 to 1 USD.

“Nigeria is sinking further in debt, and the National Assembly has become an accomplice once more.

“Tinubu had, in July this year, boasted that the FIRS and Customs under his watch have collected all-time high revenues to finance the budget.

“Why then are they still borrowing? There is something that they are not telling Nigerians, even as they are being crushed by a combination of their failed trial-and-error policies and loan rackets.

“These Tinubu’s loans are bone-crushing to Nigerians and bringing insufferable pressure on the economy, especially when they are not properly negotiated and utilised.

“It is concerning that the voracious appetite for these humongous loans is powered by corruption and not for infrastructure and development needs.

“A report by Budgit, a budget watchdog, has disclosed that the 2024 budget is a mess because of the level of pork associated with it.
