MAIDUGURI—Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram terrorists yesterday waylaid motorists in Madari village, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing 10 people, and kidnapping a young woman with her two- year old child. A driver, Mallam Abor Modu, who narrowly escaped being killed said that he was returning from Cross Kawa at about 2.30 pm, Monday with his passengers when they met the terrorists who were in 10 vehicles including an LX 470 Jeep, killing other motorists plying the Maiduguri- Baga road in Madari. He said “I had to stop with five of my passengers when I saw a Chadian resembling a Boko Haram terrorist in a Toyota Hilux vehicle mounted with a Multi Purpose Machine gun. He said the Chadian was shooting sporadically at any vehicle that came across. “One of the terrorists approached me and asked where I was coming from? I told him that I was coming form Cross Kauwa and he asked me again where I hail from? I told him that I come from Yusufari and he further asked me where my passengers came from and I told him they were going to Bindari. ‘’Then he left. After some time one of them came again and asked what I was doing? I told him I am supplicating he too left again. ‘’While I was still supplicating, I saw them killing a driver of a Peugeot Station Wagon vehicle and five of his passengers. They later abducted a young woman and her two- year old child. When a Mercedes Benz driver came with speed, they opened fire on them killing all the occupants of the vehicle. When the driver of a Hummer bus came with his passengers, he was lucky to have escaped, as they were opening fire on him as he succeeded in making a U- turn but some of his passengers alighted from the bus and ran into the bush,” Mallam Abor said. According to him, after sometimes another Chadian who was also terrorist and some Kanuri speaking ones said, ‘’we have got enough vehicles, let us go. They then asked me to go with my passengers. They went towards Kukawa in convoy of about 15 vehicles.’’ Efforts to speak with the Borno State Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, DSP Gideon Jibrin over the issue proved abortive, as his telephone lines were switched off as at the time of going to press. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/boko-haram-kills-10-abducts-two-borno-village/#sthash.R9uiL5vr.dpuf |
The dream of every woman is to find a man to spend her entire life with. Even the Holy religious books have enjoined men and women, to seek each other out and cohabit as man and wife. But as beautiful and simple as this may sound, marriage has long gone from being a simple item on a menu, it has become a task, as finding a true life partner has become as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack. It is particularly more difficult for the womenfolks as they have to be proposed to. As liberated as our society is now, it is hard to find a woman that would go out of her way to propose to a man. The norm is the other way round. So, for a woman, waiting to get a marriage proposal may me as certain as waiting for the proverbial hen to play a golden egg. It doesn’t have to do with beauty, wealth or status, or else all the Nollywood divas would have been long married before they hit their 30s. Why are these ladies still single in spite of their relative affluence and beauty? Meet some of Nollywood singles in their 30s, 40s still single and why: Despite probably being the most popular name in Nollywood, screen goddess Genevieve Nnaji is yet to find a man to call her own. One name that has been linked to the pretty actress is that of the self acclaimed ‘Koko master’, D’Banj. The Imo State-born screen diva is a single-mother who revealed in an interview that she is still single because she is afraid of divorce. “If I get married, I really want to stay married and staying married is not an easy thing. It means you are completely in tune with your partner. It means you have found your soulmate because you will have to be able to stand a lot of disappointments that would definitely come but then again you have to learn to forgive,” she said. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/nollywood-diva-yet-marry-afraid-divorce-genevieve-nnaji/#sthash.gY3DGZXH.dpuf |

Ebola caused the 2015 African Nations Cup to be moved from Morocco to Equatorial Guinea in a year which also saw Algeria and Nigeria reach the World Cup finals knock out stages. The last 12 months also saw Al Ahly of Egypt complete their haul of continental trophies with its first victory in Africa’s second-tier international competition, the Confederation Cup. Ebola, which has killed more than 6,000 people in west Africa, was a headache for football’s authorities, with fears about the disease’s spread causing cancellations and multiple venue switches. That culminated in Morocco, the hosts for the continent’s showpiece tournament, backing out of the competition and forcing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to find a new venue. Oil-rich Equatorial Guinea stepped in at the last minute. But there are concerns about whether the tiny nation, which co-hosted the 2012 edition with neighbouring Gabon, will be ready in time, with the competition slated to start on January 17. Last time round, there were complaints about the high cost of living and limited hotel space. “If I say there will be no problems, I would be lying,” CAF president Issa Hayatou admitted in a recent interview. “In two months we can’t bring together everything that is needed without there being some imperfections. We’ll do everything so we can save the essentials.” – Shock exits – CAF had earlier stopped matches being played in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, where the deadly haemmorhagic fever has devastated the country’s population and economies. The three nations were forced to play their qualifying matches away from home but despite the odds, Guinea managed to make it through to the finals after a late rally. By far the biggest shock in the AFCON qualifiers was the failure of seven-time champions Egypt and holders Nigeria to advance to the competition proper. Senegal and Tunisia qualified ahead of the Pharaohs, whose last appearance in a competition they have dominated was in 2010 in Angola, where they won their seventh trophy. Coach Shawkey Gharib, who succeeded the American Bob Bradley after another failed World Cup campaign last year, was fired as a result. Nigeria’s Super Eagles were meanwhile upstaged by a revived South Africa under new coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba and Congo, despite reaching the last 16 of the World Cup finals with Algeria. The north Africans, making their first appearance in the knock-out stages, were beaten by eventual champions Germany. Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the AFCON topped a torrid few months for the defending champions, with the country’s football federation in turmoil and uncertainty over Stephen Keshi. The coach was sacked then reinstated after the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan but it is still not clear whether he will continue in the role. – Cash rows – Africa also grabbed the headlines in Brazil for the wrong reasons when Ghana — quarter finalists four years ago in South Africa — became embroiled in an unseemly row over appearance fees. The government in Accra was forced to step in and fly more than $3 million in cash to South America on the eve of their must-win final group stage match against Argentina. Black Stars players counted the money long into the night just hours before the game. The issue caused controversy back home with Ghana’s economy squeezed by inflation and a depreciating currency. Nigeria’s government also had to intervene after players threatened to stage a boycott if they were not paid. A bitter power struggle for control of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) meanwhile led to repeated threats of international sanctions from the game’s world governing body FIFA. In club football, Al Ahly delivered a stoppage-time winner to pip Sewe Sport of the Ivory Coast to win the only continental trophy that had eluded them — the Confederation Cup. The Egyptians already had eight Champions League titles, six African Super Cups as well as four trophies from the now-defunct Africa Cup Winners Cups. “Ahly are a big club and our philosophy is to win more,” declared a proud coach Juan Carlos Garrido after the dramatic cup final win. Entente Sportive de Setif meanwhile clinched the more prestigious Champions League at the expense of AS Vita of DR Congo on the away goals rule to crown a fine run for Algerian football in 2014. Old habits hardly die. The former Nigerian Military President, Gen Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) has described the former dictator and APC Presidential candidate for the 2015 election, Pa Muhammadu Buhari, as a weak leader and does not understand the differences in Nigeria.. Babangida said that "regrettably it turned out that Major General Buhari was too rigid and uncompromising in his attitudes to issues of National significance. Efforts to make him understand that a diverse Polity like Nigeria required recognition and appreciation of differences in both Cultural and Individual Perceptions only served to aggravate the Attitudes". Pa Muhammadu Buhari (72) is the only Nigerian senior military officer that failed all the senior examinations in the history of Nigerian Military. If you check the official names of officers likes of IBB, Idiagbon, Diya, Danjuma, Akhigbe, Abdulsalami, Aikhomu. etc you see a suffix, FSS, Psc, MNi., Pa Muhammadu Buhari has none. He failed the Command and Staff College exams and all other Military examinations (Psc means Pass staff college). Gen Babangida (rtd) Overthrew Pa Buhari when the engine and the anti-corruption crusader of that regime, Maj Gen Tunde Idiagbon was away on Pilgrimage of to Mecca.
