COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF NANS ZONE B SENATE MEETING, HELD ON THE 29TH-30TH SEPTEMBER, 2016 AT FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (TECHNICAL) ASABA, DELETA STATE.
Preamble:
The National Association of Nigerian students’ (NANS) is the apex body of all Nigerian students in higher institute of learning.
The organization is saddled with the onerous responsibility of championing the cause of Nigerian students across the campuses thus ensuring a better welfare for the student’s populace and Nigerian masses.
NANS as a pressure group also offer checks and balance to government policies, mostly in the area of Education, Socio-Economic Development, Human Capital Development and such other policies that affect students and Nigeria masses at large.
2) STATE OF CAMPUSES:
(A) INCREMENT OF SCH FEES IN DELTA STATE OWNED TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS:
The Senators unanimously say no to introduction of tuition fee in Delta State owned tertiary institution. Noting that Education is a right and not a privilege, considering the current economic status of the country, it will only amount to shear wickedness to increase the fee payable in any institution in the state, when most works are even yet to be paid salaries
C) EXTORTION BY BANKS AND SCH MANAGEMENT:
The Senators also discussed extensively on the extortion of Nigerian students by Banks in active connivance with the institution management, defrauding the students by extorting over N1000 from students in the name of Bank charges: Delta State University Abraka; Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, Anambra State University Uli and many other institutions across the zone falls into this category. These charges are illegal.
3) Nigerian Students Uniform Identity Card:
The Senate unanimously adopted the uniform identity card for all students across the zone; considering the benefits attached therein.
RESOLUTIONS OF THE SENATE MEETING:
After Extensive deliberations on the agenda of the Senate meeting of NANS Zone B, the Senate unanimously resolved as follows:
viii) That the Senate of NANS zone B resolved to give Federal Government 21 Days ultimatum to address the issues raised in this communiqué.
a] At the Expiration of the ultimatum, if no action is taken by the Federal Government to genuinely address the issues raised, the Senate mandates the leadership to organize a centralized Demonstration tagged: “One Million Man March” at Asaba to press home our demands.
b] It was also resolved that all campuses in South South and South East Nigeria be shut down on the protest day in solidarity with the ‘One Million Man March”
ix) The Senate of NANS Zone B rejects the introduction of tuition fee in Delta State owned tertiary institution.
a] Gives 7 Day ultimatum to return to status quo and further demanded for reduction of the previous fee considering the economic situation of the country as most state government are yet to pay their workers.
xii) Rejects the Extortion and defrauding of Nigerian students by Banks in the name of Bank charges.
Motion for Adjournment:
The motion for adjournment was moved by Comr. Bertin Okoye; SUG President, Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe and seconded by Comr. Victor Egbunem; SUG President, Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashiuku.
