Dreams and Reality
The dews from heaven have finally settled on BB. The great transformation has unexpectedly ushered in another phase of life. She considers herself fortunate to have accumulated such massive wealth and good connections. At a time when most of her mates were still either lying in or making their beds, she had already made hers.
BB still finds it difficult to settle down to her new status. Having lived a life of hardship, she and her family had tasted poverty and slept with it. Throughout the process of growing up, the same poverty had taken permanent residence in their home.
BB goes over to her bar and serves herself some champagne in a clear, sparkling glass which she had bought on her recent trip to China. She moves over to where her piano stands, takes a few sips and sits down, placing her glass on the closest side stool. One of her fingers touches a piano key, and the first, sorrowful sound comes to life. The note reminds her of a path she had once crossed, a path she did not want to visit again. It ushers her into series of reminiscing and immediately she remembers the misery and the pain.

It was the year 1990. In my sleep I could feel hunger threatening to destroy my rib cage, asking why I could not quench its appetite. So someone can feel the taste of hunger even in sleep…. I awoke and coming back to consciousness, was startled to find that it was still dark. The day was really taking its time to set in. I wondered how long it would take for it to set properly, so that I could at least get the taste of food in my mouth, for it had become a tradition in my house to drink pap, which leaves the mouth with a sour taste, every morning.
Just then I heard the gong from the big grandfather clock in the living room, strikes five times. It was only five o’clock. There were two more hours for morning to set in properly, but the hunger was already forming a tight knot in my tummy.
O God! I don’t want to have another excruciating stomach pain. Still lying on my tummy to help ease the pain I closed my eyes and a flashback of yesterday came rushing to mind.
It was the eve of Christmas and, as usual, people were getting ready for the next day. One could smell it in the air. It was all over the place, even in people’s attitudes, and one could easily see the happy moods. It’s such a wonderful time that brings joy to the soul. It’s a time of togetherness when everybody in a family comes together in unity to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is also a time to eat and drink and love one another. What, then, should happen to people like us that have nothing to eat? This was disaster and a time of great suffering for my small soul.
By mid afternoon, my kid sister Lucy, my older brother, Uche, and I stood at the gate watching people coming back from the market carrying live chickens and lots of food stuff with them. We even saw a man carrying a goat on a bike. The goat was trying to get out of the man’s grip because it knew it was heading for the butcher’s house.
“O God, so many people are going to enjoy tomorrow,” my brother said. Then he hissed, “Only God knows what we are going to eat tomorrow.” We were all dying from uncertainty.
“How I wish God will forgive us our sins so that we can at least eat chicken and rice tomorrow, just like every other person,” I said.
“Forgive us our sins,” Uche repeated. “What kind of statement is that?”
“It’s possible,” I said. “Don’t you think there is something Dad and Mum are supposed to do, which they have not done, and that is why we are suffering?” I believed there was something Dad and Mum were not doing right and for which we were suffering, but it was too elusive for me understand.
