Mr Dan Bature, an Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in Charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, says any policeman checking vehicle particulars on the highways is on illegal duty. Bature said this on Wednesday in Ibadan during a two-day familiarisation visit to Oyo State. He said that the duty of the police was not to check vehicle particulars but to ensure safer roads. Bature warned policemen against blocking high ways, saying police patrol vehicles were not supposed to be toll gates. He said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was committed to changing the negative image of the police and supporting the anticorruption war of the Federal Government. Bature advised officers unable to key into the laudable initiatives of the IGP to resign from the force. He said that a lot was expected by the public from the police, adding that this informed the monitoring of officers. “The Inspector General of Police is determined to improve on your welfare and pursue the increment of your salary. “But this can only be achieved when the people have good perception about the police, “Bature said. Earlier, Sam Adegbuyi, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, said that the officers were dedicated and patriotic. Adegbuyi said that in view of the population of Oyo State, the command needed to create three more Area Commands in addition to the existing four commands. He commended the AIG, Oyo government and the Police Community Relation Committee for the successes recorded so far in the fight against crime. (NAN) |

A mathematics teacher in a secondary school in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, Chiadikobi Ezeibekwe, has married his 17-year-old sister, claiming that God told him to do so. Speaking with newsmen on Saturday, Ezeibekwe said he had a revelation where God told him to marry his sibling. The teacher quoted Bible passages in Deuteronomy to illustrate that siblings could marry each other. He said, “One advantage of doing this is that it discourages divorce. It also retains family values and norms.” It was gathered that the wedding was conducted by Chiadikobi’s elder brother, Chijioke Ezeibekwe, who is the priest of Dwelling Fullness of God Church, Agba. The youth of the village had set ablaze the church, Dwelling Fullness of God Church, where the wedding was conducted. Ezeibekwe said he did not pay any bride price to anybody in respect of the marriage. “I don’t feel guilty. I don’t feel ashamed. I don’t feel intimidated in any way. Only God can stop us,” he said. The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Nkeiruka Nwide, said she heard the story “unofficially.” Reacting to the issue, the traditional prime minister of Ekwulobia, Gabriel Ezeukwu, said, “Agba village youths, who saw the marriage as an abomination, set ablaze the church where the wedding took place. “I restrained them from further action against the man and his family. If it were in the past, the entire family would be burnt down because this is a grave abomination and sin.” The eldest son of the family, Emeka Ezeibekwe, vowed to resist their union. He said, “It’s over my dead body that they will call themselves husband and wife. It can’t happen.” |

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal bordering on the validity of two of the money laundering charges instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, and his company, Destra Investments Limited. In a unanimous judgment of its five-man panel, the Supreme Court on Friday described the appeal filed on behalf of Destra Investments Limited as “a storm in the teacup.” Justice Kumai Akaahs, who read the lead judgment of the apex court, berated the company’s lawyer, Mr. Tochukwu Onwugbufor, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, for pursuing such an appeal to the level of the apex court despite the clear provisions of the law supporting the decision of the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on the issue. According to Justice Akaahs, the decision of Justice Abang, which was being challenged by Destra, was right as it was in line with the provisions of Section 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. The provision states that after taking a plea, a defendant may raise any objection to the validity of the charge at any time before judgment “provided that such objection can only be considered along with the substantive issues and a ruling delivered on it at the time of delivery of judgment.” Expressing surprise that a senior advocate could pursue such appeal to the level of the Supreme Court, Justice Akaahs said, “Despite these clear provisions, learned senior counsel still came up to this court challenging the ruling of the trial court. “I find that there is no merit in the appeal; it is a storm in a teacup.” The Justice of the apex court said a lawyer of Onwugbufor’s calibre ought to help in “ensuring the orderly development of the society through strict adherence to the rule of law.” He added that as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Onwugbufor ought to only help his client to clear its name and not to erect “roadblocks to frustrate justice from running its course.” Justice Akaahs said, “Whether a person or company or person has been accused of an infraction of the law, the duty that a senior counsel owes by the privileges bestowed on him is to help the accused person or company clear their name through due legal process and not to create the impression that his duty is to erect roadblocks to frustrate justice from running its course. “The case is remitted to the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for a speedy conclusion of the case.” In his contribution, another member of the Justice Dattijo Mohamed-led Supreme Court panel, Justice Ejembi Eko, described Onwugbufor’s appeal as frivolous, vexatious and “unbecoming of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.” According to Justice Eko, the appeal was meant to frustrate the provisions of Section 36(1) of the Constitution which provides for a speedy trial, and Section 396(2) of the ACJA. Metuh and his company are being represented by separate legal teamsWhile the team of the ex-spokesperson of the PDP is being led by Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), that of Destra is led by Onwugbufor. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Metuh and his Destra Investments Limited on seven counts of money laundering involving the sum of N400m he allegedly received fraudulently from the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) in 2014 and $2m cash which he allegedly transacted with in violation of the threshold stipulated by the money laundering law. |
