Politics / We All Have Our Roles To Play Towards Ending Police Brutality by bookdowntv: 4:49pm On Oct 12, 2020
Police personnels are humans too. They belong to families. Like everyone of us they have parents, siblings, spouses, children and friends. They merry at the birth of a new family member and cry over the loss of a loved one. They are members of our churches, mosques and other shrines. They attended the same schools we attended and they live next to us.

So where did this brutality come from? If it is not the result of giving too much power to a frustrated group of individuals. Frustrated because they are poor, broke, hungry, and, in some cases, even hopeless.

Dear President, the problem was neither the name nor the unit. The police unit could have been called anything other than SARS. The problem is simply the abuse of power by the men in this unit.

Integrating same former SARS personnel into any other unit within the same powerful Nigerian Police Force without a proper reorientation or restructuring of the force is only as good as providing them a covering to continue operating. It doesn’t end the brutality.

When we cried #EndSARS, at heart, we actually meant #EndPoliceBrutality. We demand for more than just dismantling a unit of the force:

- Police harassments in all of its forms need to be stopped once and for all.
- Our Police personnel recruitment process needs to be reviewed.
- Our Police personnels need to be sponsored on compulsory basic ICT training.
- No unit within the police force should be powerful enough to inflict physical suffering on, or terminate the life of, any citizen without a prior signed court order specifically for that individual citizen.
- From the entry level, our Police personnels need to be adequately compensated for the services they render to this great country. Sufficient to afford them a comfortable life.
- The Police force should not be a dumping ground. No! It should be made attractive for intellectually sound citizens.

Fellow citizens, while this might sound counter intuitive in this moment of intense pain, hating the Police will not solve the problem. They need our love and support. Give them a lift when you have the opportunity.

Identify them within your neighbourhood and places of worship. Support their families.

Love is all we need at this time.
