CPR steps: Quick reference

Use CPR when an adult is not breathing or when they are only gasping occasionally, and when they are not responding to questions or taps on the shoulder.

In children and infants, use CPR when they are not breathing normally and not responding.

Check that the area is safe, then perform the following basic CPR steps:

Call 911 or ask someone else to.
Lay the person on their back and open their airways.
Check for breathing. If they are not breathing, start CPR.
Perform 30 chest compressions.
Perform two rescue breaths.
Repeat until an ambulance or automated external defibrillator (AED) arrives.

There are two main stages to CPR: the preparation stage and the CPR stage.

Preparation steps – How to perform CPR
Before performing CPR on an adult, use the following preparation steps:

Step 1. Call 911

First, check the scene for factors that could put you in danger, such as traffic, fire, or falling masonry. Next, check the person. Do they need help? Tap their shoulder and shout, “Are you OK?”

If they are not responding, call 911 or ask a bystander to call 911 before performing CPR. If possible, ask a bystander to go and search for an AED machine. People can find these in offices and many other public buildings.

Step 2. Place the person on their back and open their airways



Place the person carefully on their back and kneel beside their chest. Tilt their head back slightly by lifting their chin.

Open their mouth and check for any obstruction, such as food or vomit. Remove any obstruction if it is loose. If it is not loose, trying to grasp it may push it farther into the airway.

Step 3. Check for breathing

Place your ear next the person’s mouth and listen for no more than 10 seconds. If you do not hear breathing, or you only hear occasional gasps, begin CPR.

If someone is unconscious but still breathing, do not perform CPR. Instead, if they do not seem to have a spinal injury, place them in the recovery position. Keep monitoring their breathing and perform CPR if they stop breathing.

Step 4. Perform 30 chest compressions

Place one of your hands on top of the other and clasp them together. With the heel of the hands and straight elbows, push hard and fast in the center of the chest, slightly below the nipples.

Push at least 2 inches deep. Compress their chest at a rate of least 100 times per minute. Let the chest rise fully between compressions.

Foundation is the lowest part of the building or the civil structure that is in direct contact with the soil which transfers loads from the structure to the soil safely. Generally, the foundation can be classified into two, namely shallow foundation and deep foundation.

A shallow foundation transfers the load to a stratum present in a shallow depth. The deep foundation transfers the load to a deeper depth below the ground surface.

A tall building like a skyscraper or a building constructed on very weak soil requires the deep foundation. If the constructed building has the plan to extend vertically in future, then a deep foundation must be suggested.

To construct a foundation, trenches are dig deeper into the soil till a hard stratum is reached. To get stronger base foundation concrete is poured into this trench. These trenches are incorporated with reinforcement cage to increase the strength of the foundation.

The projected steel rods that are projected outwards act as the bones and must be connected with the substructure above. Once the foundation has been packed correctly the construction of the building can be started.

The construction of the foundation can be done with concrete, steel, stones, bricks etc. The material and the type of foundation selected for the desired structure depends on the design loads and the type of underlying soil.



The design of the foundation must incorporate different effects of construction on the environment. For example, the digging and piling work done for deep foundation may result in adverse disturbance to the nearby soil and structural foundation. These can sometimes cause the settlement issues of the nearby structure.

Such effects have to be studied and taken care before undergoing such operations. Disposal of the waste material from the operations must be disposed of properly. The construction of foundation has to be done to resist the external attack of harmful substances.

The foundation for each structure is designed such that:

The underlying soil below the foundation structure does not undergo shear failure
The settlement caused during the first service load or have to be within the limit


Allowable bearing pressure can be defined as the pressure the soil can withstand without failure.
What is the Purpose of Foundation?
Foundations are provided for all load carrying structure for following purposes:

Foundation is the main reason behind the stability of any structure. The stronger is the foundation, more stable is the structure.
The proper design and construction of foundations provide a proper surface for the development of the substructure in a proper level and over a firm bed.
The specially designed foundation helps in avoiding the lateral movements of the supporting material.
A proper foundation distributes the load on to the surface of the bed uniformly. This uniform transfer helps in avoiding unequal settlement of the building. Differential settlement is an undesirable building effect.
The foundation serves the purpose of completely distributing the load from the structure over a large base area and then to the soil underneath. This load transferred to the soil should be within the allowable bearing capacity of the soil.
Functions of Foundation in Construction
Based on the purposes of foundation in construction, the main functions of the foundation can be enlisted as below:

Provide overall lateral stability for the structure
Foundation serve the function of providing a level surface for the construction of substructure
Load Distribution is carried out evenly
The load intensity is reduced to be within the safe bearing capacity of the soil
The soil movement effect is resisted and prevented
Scouring and the undermining issues are solved by the construction of foundation

Requirements of a Good Foundation
The design and the construction of a well-performing foundation must possess some basic requirements that must not be ignored. They are:

The design and the construction of the foundation are done such that it can sustain as well as transmit the dead and the imposed loads to the soil. This transfer has to be carried out without resulting in any form of settlement that can result in any form of stability issues for the structure.
Differential settlements can be avoided by having a rigid base for the foundation. These issues are more pronounced in areas where the superimposed loads are not uniform in nature.
Based on the soil and area it is recommended to have a deeper foundation so that it can guard any form of damage or distress. These are mainly caused due to the problem of shrinkage and swelling because of temperature changes.
The location of the foundation chosen must be an area that is not affected or influenced by future works or factors.

On Thursday the 14th of November 2019, Jack Ma, co-founder of Alibaba, Chinese e-commerce company, led a team of investors from his country to Nigeria on Thursday.

“The second E is support entrepreneurs, this is very important. We think we can make entrepreneurs as the heros of African continent. In China is the entrepreneurs that promote business development, government support entrepreneurs.

“The third is E-government, if government is on E, it will be very efficient, transparent, people will know government can help and government will know what the people want. The last and very important E is education.

“In the next few days we are going to have the all the internet prize, everyone in Africa can apply for award. I am happy to know that four Nigerian entrepreneurs are among the top 10. We will have the final competition in two days and I think Nigeria entrepreneurs will have great result.

The Government of Anambra State invites applications from suitably qualified persons of Anambra State origin, for the award of full scholarships to undergo training in the following courses:

Standard Pilot Training Programme at International Aviation College, Ilorin
Avionics at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, (NCAT), Zaria
Airfame and Power Plant at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, (NCAT), Zaria
The scholarship programme is administered through a Special Grant from His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano, the Executive Governor of Anambra State. The scholarship programme was inspired by Girls Can Fly Initiative, an NGO. Application is open to both male and female applicants.

Each applicant must:

Be an indigene of Anambra State.
Be between the ages of 21 years and 27 years.
Have a minimum of first degree or its equivalent in a science-related field from a recognized higher institution.
Be medically fit, certified by a recognized hospital and insured by the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA).
Have a crime-free history.

Over the course of an academic year, the Obama Foundation Scholars will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills and to build new capacities and networks that will accelerate their impact in their home countries.

Obama Foundation Scholars Program Details.
Scholars participate in an immersive program that brings together academic, skills-based and experiential learning, designed by Columbia University in consultation with the Obama Foundation. A cornerstone of the program includes a required course, which will run for the length of the academic year. Scholars will also have an opportunity to select and enroll in additional courses offered by Columbia University that are relevant to their specific field or values-based leadership, or that fill in gaps in their previous studies.

Scholars will also participate in workshops to develop practical skills to enhance the impact of their work. Previous workshop topics include conflict management and resolution, public speaking, data analysis and interpretation, and resilience. The program also takes advantage of the unique opportunities that come with being at one of the world’s most important centers of research and with being in the City of New York. Throughout the year, Scholars will have opportunities to engage with thought leaders and practitioners from public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

In addition, Scholars participate in one-of-a-kind experiences led by the Obama Foundation, including robust networking, mentorship, service activities and values-based leadership development, offering them a chance to learn from some of the world’s most innovative leaders and to build connections with the Obama Foundation and with Obama Foundation Scholars at the University of Chicago.

Everyday, thousands of young African designers take a step further in their quest for the global stage. Oftentimes, this begins with the spark of an idea, then a brilliant sketch of those ideas and finally, the exciting process of bringing the sketches to life.

That is where the Sketch2Fame competition comes in. Now in its second edition, The Sketch2Fame competition is part of the GTBank Fashion Weekend initiative created to promote enterprise in the African fashion industry.

The competition will give young and aspiring fashion designers across Africa the opportunity to produce their fashion sketches and showcase it at the GTBank Fashion Weekend, which holds on Saturday November 9 and Sunday November 10, 2019.

The Sketch2Fame competition begins on September 13 and is anticipated to attract thousands of entries from across Africa. The competition will not only give budding designers access to a wider audience, but honor their enterprising spirit.
