Very stubborn people the Isrealis...

Most other countries would have stylishly backed down from this rafah invasion/war. Because of the US and most countries being against it and have threatened not to support Isreal if they do go ahead with the invasion.

But not the Isrealis!

Politics / Re: What Are The Advantages Of Countries With US Military Base by brain54(m): 3:07pm On May 06
helinues:

They can do all that without having a base. Do they intend to always fight others abi what do they need it for?
Do you mean the host country...

Or the country with the military base?

At the bolded some countries take their security very serious. They may not always be fighting others but they are proactive to prevent security threats and breaches. Not every country is like Nigeria that hardly take these things serious.

That's why countries budget billions of dollars on security. Even going as far as investing heavily on military research etc.

It's a matter of being proactive... Also most military bases are located in conflict or regions of conflicts likely happening.

One major advantage is quick response time. For example if the US was to have security challenges with in the west African region it will take them significant time to transport military hardware and personnel from the US to the region to counter such threats.

But if they(us) have a military base within they can easily launch an attack or counter from their base.

Military base just mean hardware equipment and personnel on standby.

In my opinion no matter how much they try to sell the idea of military bases to the host country. It favors the country with the military base more and is more of for selfish reasons and interest of the country with the base!

It does have some advantages...

Like technology transfer, diplomatic leverage, training and capacity building, enhanced security and capacity building etc.

But personally I think it benefits the country with the military base more and not the host country.

I am not in support of the Nigerian government allowing the US build a military base in the country!

Romance / Re: Where Did The Dead Bodies Go? (photos Included) by brain54(m): 12:56pm On May 06
So this catacombs issue really made me curious...

I did my own reading. And this is what I found out....

Catacombs origin :

The Catacombs of Paris, a network of underground tunnels and chambers, contain the remains of millions of Parisians whose bones were transferred there in the 18th century due to overcrowding in the city's cemeteries.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Paris' population grew rapidly, and its cemeteries became overcrowded. The largest cemetery, Les Innocents, was closed in 1763, and a new solution was needed. Between 1763 and 1774, a significant portion of the bones from Les Innocents and other Parisian cemeteries were exhumed and transferred to the Catacombs.

The process of transferring the bones involved:

1. Exhumation: Digging up the remains from the cemeteries.
2. Transportation: Carrying the bones through the streets of Paris, often at night, to minimize disruption.
3. Deposition: Placing the bones in the Catacombs, often in a macabre yet artistic arrangement.

This transfer of remains was done to address public health concerns and create more space in the city. Today, the Catacombs of Paris are a fascinating, albeit eerie, piece of history and a popular tourist attraction.

But why go through the trouble of removing 6-7 million bodies :

There were several reasons why the authorities went through the trouble of exhuming and transferring the remains to the Catacombs:

1. Public Health: Overcrowded cemeteries posed serious health risks, as decaying bodies contaminated soil and water, leading to diseases like the Black Death.
2. Urban Development: Paris was expanding, and new construction projects required space previously occupied by cemeteries.
3. Religious Beliefs: The Catholic Church taught that bodies should be buried in consecrated ground, but the overcrowding made it difficult to maintain this practice.
4. Aesthetics: The cemeteries were seen as unsightly and unpleasant, and the transfer of remains allowed for the creation of more beautiful and tranquil public spaces.
5. Hygiene and Sanitation: The transfer of remains helped to reduce the smell and presence of decaying bodies in the city.

By transferring the remains to the Catacombs, the authorities aimed to address these concerns, create more space, and improve the overall quality of life in Paris. The Catacombs provided a vast, underground space to accommodate the remains, allowing the city to expand and develop while maintaining respect for the deceased.

But why over 6 million bodies for a population of less than 600 thousand people :

The reason for the large number of bodies (estimated between 6-7 million) in the Catacombs of Paris, despite the city's relatively small population (around 500,000-600,000 at the time), is due to several factors:

1. Centuries of burials: Paris' cemeteries had been in use for centuries, with burials dating back to the Middle Ages. Over time, the number of bodies accumulated, leading to overcrowding.
2. High mortality rates: Life expectancy was low during this period, with high infant mortality rates, diseases, and epidemics contributing to a significant number of deaths.
3. Limited burial space: Paris' cemeteries were small and had reached capacity, leading to the need for a new solution.
4. Mass burials: During times of crisis, such as wars, famines, and plagues, mass burials were common, adding to the number of bodies.
5. Cemetery consolidation: When the Catacombs were created, remains from multiple cemeteries were consolidated into this single underground location.

These factors combined resulted in the large number of bodies transferred to the Catacombs, making it one of the largest mass burial sites in the world.

My conclusion :

In my opinion I am not convinced by Ourtruth's arguments.

Ourtruth this is definitely the first time...

I have had to pay real attention to what you are saying.

6 million bodies in a population of less than 700 thousand does seem strange and odd.

The question is "Were did all those bodies come from? "

However I noticed you exaggerate a bit in your submissions. Probably to drive home your theories. But in the end it does make your submission seem doubtful.

For example I did a very light research on the catacombs and found out it covers an area of 180 kilometers. You said over 200 miles. 180 kilometers to miles is about 111.85 miles. So where did your extra 69 kilometers or 42.87 miles come from? It seems small but makes a huge difference in what you are saying.

Again though I can't say this conclusively but the second, third and fourth pictures you posted did not come up in association with the catacombs.

Like I said just a brief search so I can not be conclusive on that... But if indeed it is a picture from the tomb then it only Makes the bodies look odder and weirder because those are obviously a ritualistic burial. And makes your theory more plausible.

I will do a more thorough follow up about this catacombs.

Anyway kudos on this. It's one of your most convincing researches I have seen so far!

Op so your preeq is blue...?

You forgot to start with yourself first. It's like a tradition here on NL to set the ball rolling with your story.

Anyway I once fueled my car, drove my then girlfriend all the way from Jos to kaduna (Ahmadu Bello university Zaria) to do post ume admission stuff then.

Lodged her (Abi we) in an expensive hotel (all the moderately priced ones were full because of the influx of people to the city) for 2 Abi 3 days and all expenses was on me. Even though she had a father o. Followed her upadan to write the exam and do all the administrative admission stuff and enquiries like hand bag. ( first love dey high pass ogogoro I swear)

The funny part is the father will later threaten me to leave his daughter alone after taking care of his fatherly responsibilities o.

When I think about all of it I just laugh at myself now.

She married now with kids to one of the most popular gospel musicians in Jos.

Time really flies fast.

She was 18 then and I was around 21 or 22. I finished my BSc at a really young age!

I used to read this magazine...

Most people no longer read hard copy magazines. They prefer to do more online reading.

This translates to poor sales and financial struggles even for the biggest hard cover magazines.

I used to play with the idea of starting a magazine but I guess I moved on from that plan.

Except I adapt the idea to an online magazine... But how many people still enjoy reading at all?

Most people have become a bit lazy to read stuff!
