I was shocked to my bones today when I went to visit a victim of our porous judidciary system who was wrongly accused and detained @ the kirikiri prison while the main accused is walking free.
When I got to the entrance,I was asked to go and buy an envelope and paper to write application to see the person which I did immediately.after filling the form, I was asked to pay N100 before they will register my letter to see the inmate.I forgot to say that I had to pay N100 to the security after buying the envelope. Then another prison warden came out to collect the letters and everyone paid N100,infact they had this nylon that they brought out to give people change.One lady was practically crying because she can't afford the various payments which cost minimum of N700 and she was left out.When we entered,paid N100 to collect tag,another N100 to another warden that searches people.Before you enter the waiting room to see the inmate,you will also pay N100.The disheartening thing in all these is that the people that they are collecting money from(visitors)can hardly afford to part with such an amount before seeing the inmate they came to see.Despite the bold sign written on the wall-VISITING IS FREE,the compulsory collection of money and creation of different collection points to defraud and illegally enrich themselves is highly unacceptable.I will appreciate if this observation can be placed where everyone can easily read it and effect a change
