Science/TechnologyChanging/editing Info Regarding Your NIN: A Decent Guide by BRAVEHERMIT(op):
As the title suggests, this is simply a step-by-step tutorial for whenever you have to change stuff in regards to your Nin. There is, in my opinion, no good compiled guide for this specific situation. This is my first time writing something like this, but my nin name correction process was a terrible and lengthy ordeal that I feel could have been avoided if a guide like this existed beforehand.

NEED TO KNOW(PLEASE DON'T SKIP)
1. The only true way to correct info about your NIN is through the Nimc Self-Service Portal website. This one (if you're worried about suspicious links, please copy-paste the link into the VirusTotal website):

https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng/

Despite its name, there is no other alternative. Even if you were to go to your local government(LGA) office/Secretariat, they'd still use the same website. It's really non-negotiable.

2. Both the device and the browser being used are very important. The self-service website only works with the device and browser app you FIRST used to register. I will try to further elaborate using this simple story:

"John needed to correct his name on his Nin. He was told it didn't match the one on his passport. So he took out his Tecno Spark 30C phone and went to the Nimc Self-Service website on his Google Chrome browser. He clicked on the 'register' icon and proceeded to make an account. Later in the day, he misplaced his phone. He still remembered his email and password so he tried logging in on his sister's phone. She uses an Opera browser on an OPPO A3x phone. The website gave him an error."

Sorry for the lengthy text but basically, the website won't allow you to login if you change either the browser app you are using or the phone you used before.

THE MOST EFFECTIVE STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

Step 1: Go to the Nimc Self-Service Portal website.

Step 2: I'm assuming you haven't made an account there yet so click the register icon. Please put in your legal(the one on your official government files) first name, last name, and middle name(s) if any. Extra tip, please let it match the name on your passport. Problems arise when they don't match.

I would try to explain the face scanning part, but I can't seem to figure out a proper way to explain. All I can say is that whenever the website needs to scan your face. There will be a 'pop-up' most of the time. Always click 'Allow this time'. And proceed. You will then land on the first page that lists changes to your NIN that you can make.

Step 3: Select the change you want to make.

Step 4: The first icon you should click is the last one on the bottom called 'New Payment'.

Step 5: Click on 'Offline Payment' (The reasoning for this will be explained in the next step). This will give you the RRR. Please copy this number or take a screenshot. Click on the X on the top right to leave.

Step 6: Now the reason why I told you to use the 'Offline Payment' and get the RRR directly is because the 'Online Payment' methods will fail 99% of the time. The most surefire way to pay for the Remita(RRR) is through your Microfinance Bank App(MFB) like Opay, Moniepoint, Paga, etc.

Step 6.5: This is a small detour to explain to you how to pay using such apps. In my particular Microfinance Bank app, my first page contains a group of icons under the title 'Services'. If I can't find the icon called 'Government' on that first page services, I click on an icon called 'More' in which I scroll till I find the 'Government' icon. I click on the 'Government' icon and then scroll till I find Remita. Sometimes I don't need to scroll and it's already on the very top. These steps are specifically for my Microfinance Bank App. But just search 'How to pay for Remita using {Put your Microfinance Bank App name here}' on Google and you should get the instructions you are looking for.

Step 7: Your Microfinance Bank App will sy the payment is pending/waiting. Do not be alarmed. This is very normal. All you need to do is to go back to the Nimc Self-Service website. Log in again if the website logged you out( The website usually does not keep you logged in) then select the change you want to make again which will bring you back to those three icons again.

Step 8: This time click on 'Validate RRR'. Here you will put the same RRR number(This number is very important). If successful, this will send something called a 'payment reference' to your email account that you used to register. Click on the X on the top right to leave.

Step 9: You will receive a notification. Click on the notification. That is the 'payment reference' email that was sent. If you miss the chance to do so, just go to your email account app directly. The 'payment reference' email should be the first one.

Step 10: Copy only the 'Payment Reference' number. It starts with capital NIMC. Since it's a random string of letters and numbers, you can tell very easily when it ends. It is also the only bold part of the email/message.

Step 11: Log in again if you have to again. Then select the change you want to make again. This will bring you back, again, to those three icons.

Step 12: Click on 'Resume Application'. This time you will put in that 'payment reference'. And click the icon below to submit.

Step 13: Make the changes you need to make. There are some icons that say 'Edit'. Please click on them first. If you don't, you won't be able to type. After you are done making your changes, please click on those same icons again. Except they are now called 'Save' instead of 'Edit'. This is normal.
Note: If you don't see those 'Edit' icons and are able to type freely. Then no need to look for them or the 'Save' icons. Just make your changes.

Step 14: Scroll down. You will be asked to give only one of the two documents listed below. An 'Affidavit' or a 'government id'.

Step 15: If you choose the 'government id' (I am unfamiliar with the method that uses an affidavit), please take a photo of your passport. A good photo that isn't blurry. Please make sure it includes both pages with your face in the passport in an upright position.

Step 16: For the option you choose, click on the icon in its immediate bottom. This will open your gallery(The place your phone keeps your photo). You should be able to see your passport photo. Please click on it just once. You will see a blue tick on it. You will also see the word 'Done' somewhere. I am unsure how to describe this because it differs depending on the phone brand.

Step 17: Scroll down. You should see an icon that says 'Submit' or 'Confirm' or 'Ok'. Click on it. You will see a 'pop-up' showing the old one and the new one you have edited/changed. Click on the bottom green icon that says 'confirm'.

Step 18: You will be brought back to the very first page where you selected the change you want to make. This time don't select anything.

Step 19: Scroll down. You will something called 'Most Recent Modifications'. Beneath that, you will see something called 'Tracking ID'. There you will see a string of letters and numbers. It usually starts with B. Copy that. Write it down if you can. It is VERY VERY IMPORTANT. DO NOT LOSE IT.

Step 20: As from the time I'm writing this guide, the notification system for the NIMC Self-Service Portal website is actually broken. This means that even though you've clicked on 'confirm' that one time and successfully made your change. The website won't tell you when it has finished processing it and made it official.

So the next move is to wait at least 4 or 5 days then go to the Local Government office/Secretariat that is both closest to you and staffed with competent workers. This is because you will give them your tracking ID( That very important number I told you to write down. NOT the RRR). They will then print out whatever needs to be printed out. Sometimes they don't need to print out anything but for name corrections they always have to.

Congratulations! You have successfully fixed the problems concerning your NIN.
