Observation: At the Anambra State Governorship Election Decides, 2025, other parties have their logo and party initials inscribed on the ballot papers but for the labour party it was only the party logo inscribed, and the party initial (LP) was not on it? |
Congratulations to Prof Joseph Ugboaja on his reappointment as CMD by Mr. President.

Prof Ugboaja is doing excellent well as the CMD of NAUTH.

The reappointment of Professor Joseph Ugboaja, OON, popularly known as Ochinanwata Nnewi, as the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, for a second term by the Presidency has continued to elicit widespread commendations. This overwhelming approval stems from his outstanding achievements during his first tenure, which laid the foundation for transforming NAUTH into an institution of international repute. In many ways, Prof. Ugboaja’s leadership trajectory mirrors that of Dr. Paul Rothman, who assumed office as CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, USA in 2012. At the time, Johns Hopkins was facing severe challenges, including rising healthcare costs, declining reimbursements, and growing pressure to maintain its global prestige. Dr. Rothman responded with a bold vision—unifying the hospital system, medical school, and physician network under one strategic framework. He championed genomics, immunotherapy, and data-driven research; fostered global partnerships across the Middle East and Asia; and promoted patient-centered care rooted in empathy, innovation, and collaboration. By the time Dr. Rothman left office in 2022, Johns Hopkins Medicine had consolidated its place as the top-ranked U.S. hospital for 22 consecutive years, expanded into global healthcare consulting and hospital management, attracted billions in research funding, and played a leading role in the global COVID-19 response. Like Rothman, Prof. Ugboaja is redefining leadership at NAUTH through his Vision 2030 agenda, anchored on nine strategic pillars. His goal is clear: to position NAUTH among the top three tertiary hospitals in Nigeria by 2030 and ultimately as one of the leading medical institutions in Africa. Under his watch, the hospital has deployed cutting-edge technology in financial management, plugging leakages and closing loopholes. This innovation enabled NAUTH to generate an unprecedented ₦1.8 billion in internally generated revenue in 2024—the highest in its history —with projections for even greater growth through strategic partnerships and collaborations. Equally significant is the ongoing plan, in collaboration with the ICT Office of the First Lady, to document and digitalize all internal revenue sources for international visibility and patronage. This initiative forms part of Prof. Ugboaja’s broader vision of making NAUTH a self-sustaining institution, capable of initiating and completing major projects without overreliance on external funding. On the clinical front, the imminent completion of the new MRI and Radiology Suite is set to further strengthen diagnostic and therapeutic services, boosting the hospital’s capacity to deliver world-class healthcare. Moving ahead to 2030, and by God’s grace, Prof. Ugboaja and his dedicated team are poised to firmly position NAUTH not only as Nigeria’s best medical institution but also as a beacon of medical excellence in Africa. CELEBRATING THE WELL-DESERVED REAPPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR JOSEPH UGBOAJA AS CMD, NAUTH, FOR A SECOND TERM BY MR. PRESIDENT. "Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example." – Cory Booker. The recent reappointment of Professor (Chief) Joseph Odirichukwu Ugboaja (OON), fondly called “Ochinanwata Nnewi”, as the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, by His Excellency, (Senator) Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), for a second term in office has been met with overwhelming joy and commendations from the NAUTH community and the general public. This reappointment is not just a recognition — it is a reward for exceptional performance, a vote of confidence, and a clear mandate to consolidate on remarkable achievements. It is worth recalling that Professor Ugboaja’s first appointment as substantive CMD by the former President, Muhammadu Buhari (of blessed memory), on 10th August 2021, was nothing short of divine providence — an opportunity that marked the beginning of an era of purposeful leadership, grounded in service to humanity and guided by an unwavering commitment to integrity, excellence, and progress. From the very first day in office, Professor Ugboaja set out to rewrite the NAUTH story. Through visionary leadership, he has transformed the institution into a truly patient-centered, staff-friendly, and globally respected teaching hospital. His tenure has been marked by decisive action, innovation, and results that speak volumes. In just his first year, he accomplished what many had thought impossible — the successful relocation of NAUTH to its permanent site after over 30 years of delay. This milestone was accompanied by the installation of state-of-the-art medical equipment, the initiation of 58 landmark projects across all thematic areas of the hospital - including the magnificent administrative complex, a-100 office space named after Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the completion of 48 of them — many commissioned by top federal representatives. These achievements align perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, ensuring that Nigerians have access to quality, affordable, and world-class healthcare. The growth has been unprecedented. Under his leadership, NAUTH’s bed capacity has expanded from 300 to 1,500, making it the largest teaching hospital in Nigeria today. He has also positioned the institution as a beacon of medical excellence and a potential hub for medical tourism in West Africa. Looking ahead, Professor Ugboaja is not slowing down. His Vision 2030 blueprint aims to place NAUTH among the top three tertiary hospitals in Nigeria — and ultimately, the very best. His second term will focus on consolidating gains and delivering on ambitious plans, including the establishment of world-class Centres of Excellence in cardiology, oncology (cancer care), minimal access surgery, organ transplantation, neurosurgery, and stroke management. Plans are also underway for specialized postgraduate training programs that will strengthen NAUTH’s role as a regional leader in medical education and research. Professor Ugboaja’s leadership is defined by courage, foresight, and an unrelenting drive to serve. He is a transformational figure whose name is now indelibly etched in the history of NAUTH and Nigerian healthcare. As he embarks on this second term, may his tenure be marked by even greater innovations, groundbreaking projects, and record-setting achievements. Indeed, as the saying goes, when leadership meets vision, history is made — and NAUTH stands today as living proof. Commentary! NAUTH: Achieving The Short-term Milestone of Vision 2030. "A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done." – Ralph Lauren. Professor Joseph Ugboaja, OON, "Ochinanwata Nnewi" the dynamic Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, popularly known as the "Action CMD", assumed office with a bold and transformative vision—to elevate NAUTH to rank among the top three tertiary hospitals in Nigeria by the year 2030, and ultimately become the best in the country. Instructively, this vision is rooted in a clear mission: to provide specialized healthcare services that are timely, effective, efficient, and economically viable. It is further committed to advancing medical training and research, offering world-class healthcare services through highly trained professionals and motivated staff working with the best of the state-of-art-equipment in a very conductive environment. Emphatically, Vision 2030 is not a mere slogan; it is a meticulously crafted roadmap. The vision has been split into two phases: the short-term and the long-term. According to Professor Ugboaja, the short-term goal was to completely relocate the hospital—clinically and administratively—to its permanent site before the end of 2025. This task, which had appeared insurmountable to many due to its massive human and financial demands, was met with skepticism. Yet, through visionary leadership, strategic planning, and the implementation of nine core strategic pillars—including robust partnerships, efficient financial management, strategic human resource development, and strong corporate governance—Professor Ugboaja made it a reality. Remarkably, within just one year in office, he led the successful relocation of NAUTH to its permanent site, ending a 30-year era at the old location. More so, through strategic alliances with key stakeholders, government agencies, and the Presidency, 58 landmark projects were initiated across all thematic areas of the hospital, with 48 already completed and several commissioned by top federal representatives. The final phase of this short-term vision will be realized with the movement of the remaining administrative units to the newly completed Ahmed Bola Tinubu Administrative Complex, a-100 office space, before the end of 2025. Today, under Professor Ugboaja's leadership, NAUTH has attained international recognition for its commitment to clinical excellence. The hospital’s capacity has grown from a modest 300-bed facility to an impressive 1,500-bed institution, with a long-term projection of reaching 5,000 beds by 2030, and ultimately, to be the best in Africa. Looking ahead, from 2026 onward, the hospital will shift focus to its long-term goals—establishing Centres of Excellence in cardiology, minimal access surgery, organ transplant, neurosurgery, stroke management, and more. Notably, plans are also underway to develop specialized training institutes, such as a Mother and Child Care Institute, and to commence postgraduate trainings. Interestingly, NAUTH has already secured accreditation from the West African College of Surgeons to offer Postgraduate training in Minimal Access Surgery - particularly Gynaecological Endoscopy - making it the only tertrary institution in West Africa with such recognition. In an official assessment visit, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr. Salma Ibrahim Anas, on her maiden visit to the hospital recently, scored NAUTH’s performance at an impressive 85 percent. Moved by the impressive performance of the CMD, Dr. Salma pledged federal support and expressed readiness to attract international investors to the institution. She further noted that if other tertiary hospitals replicated NAUTH’s leadership model, maternal and child mortality, as well as cancer-related deaths, could drop by 20 percent in two years, and by up to 40 percent within four years. Dr. Salma then applauded Professor Ugboaja’s judicious use of public funds, transparent governance, and the transformation of the President’s health agenda into a practical, on-the-ground reality. She noted that Professor Ugboaja has proven that public funds can be indeed be used to provide dividends to the people. She subsequently designated NAUTH as an official orientation center for newly appointed CMDs across the country to learn the hospital leadership story—testament to the institution’s leadership model and transformational success. Consequently, Professor Ugboaja stands out as a quintessential 21st-Century Administrator/Chief Executive Officer (CEO). A homegrown, visionary, and pragmatic leader who has inspired the power and energy to transform his lofty dream for NAUTH into reality. Trained entirely in Nigeria, Professor Ugboaja and his team have built a tertrary institution poised to serve generations to come. His leadership success is not only a blessing to the South-East but to the entire nation, as NAUTH continues to set the benchmark in medical care, training, and infrastructure. Furthermore, the relocation of NAUTH has significantly impacted the socio-economic development of Nnewi, Ozubulu & Orafitte metropolises, spurring real estate growth, rural infrastructures, and hospitality services, while boosting its' GDP growth. With confidence, the journey to Vision 2030 is firmly on course, as NAUTH is set to become a globally recognized West African Centre of Medical Excellence. Finally, you are passionately invited to partner with NAUTH to make Vision 2030 a reality. COMMENTARY: THE VISIT OF THE VICE-PRESIDENT TO NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, NNEWI. His Excellency, Kashim Shettima (GCON), the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, will visit Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, on Thursday, April 10, 2025, to commemorate the hospital's 2nd anniversary of relocating to its permanent site. The visit will also mark the commissioning of key projects executed under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Joseph Ugboaja (OON), including the grand-opening of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administrative Complex, an impressive facility supported by the Presidency. This will also be the first time a sitting Vice-President will be visiting the hospital. Since Professor Ugboaja assumed office as the substantive CMD just over three years ago, NAUTH has been in the news consistently for its remarkable developmental strides. The CMD's innovative leadership is anchored on nine strategic pillars, with key focuses on Cooperative Governance, Infrastructural Development, the use of state-of-the-art medical equipment, and fostering partnerships and collaborations. These pillars have been instrumental in elevating NAUTH’s standing on the global stage. The CMD and his dedicated team are unwavering in their commitment to positioning NAUTH among the top three teaching hospitals in Nigeria by 2030, with the ultimate goal of making it the best. This vision is a priority for the Chief Medical Director. The achievements under Professor Ugboaja's leadership have been both significant and impressive. Within just one year in office, he spearheaded the relocation of NAUTH to its permanent site after 30 years of operation at a temporary location. During this period, NAUTH operated with a 300-bed capacity under challenging conditions. Thus, through prudent financial management and strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in the health sector, he made this monumental relocation possible. Currently, NAUTH boasts a 1,300-bed capacity, with plans in place to expand this to 5,000 beds within the next four years, positioning the hospital to become the largest healthcare facility in Sub-Saharan Africa. This vision is not only achievable but also well within reach, as NAUTH has the capacity and potential to make it a reality. The Chief Medical Director’s policy aligns with the Nigerian Health Sector Renewal and Investment Initiative (NHSRII), a Federal Government health policy aimed at building human capacity for quality healthcare and strengthening collaborations between federal, state, and development partners. His leadership has continues to drive the implementation of National Health Act. As part of this initiative, on September 27, 2024, the CMD visited the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Zhengzhou in China, the largest hospital in the world with a capacity of 10,000 beds. This visit has already begun to yield positive results, fostering collaborations aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery at NAUTH. Additionally, NAUTH has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Liquefied Gas Company Ltd as part of a multi-billion naira health intervention program aimed at reducing the cost of medical care in Nigeria. Furthermore, NAUTH’s collaboration with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has led to the construction of several medical complexes equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. One of the major ongoing projects is the regional Radio-Diagnostic Centre, a multi-billion naira Federal Government initiative attracted by the Chief Medical Director, designed to provide high-quality medical care to the Southeast. Another landmark project is the International Cancer and Diagnostic Research Center, funded by Chief Cletus Ibeto (Omekannaya), which aims to boost medical tourism at NAUTH. These projects reflect the excellence in leadership demonstrated by the Chief Medical Director, which further underscored the essence of the Vice-President's visit. The CMD’s policies has further align seamlessly with the health priorities of Governor Charles Soludo’s administration, which focuses on expanding healthcare infrastructure, improving access to quality care, and promoting preventive medicine—all of which have direct benefits for local communities. As the Vice-President visits, it is expected that his presence will provide a strong boost to the ongoing infrastructural development at NAUTH, with a ripple effect that will benefit not only the hospital but the entire State and the South-East region. Mr. Vice President, you are warmly welcomed to Anambra State, the Light of the Nation, and to Nnewi, the Land of Gold. Nnoo! Finally, the public is cordially invited to come out en-masse to welcome the Vice-President and participate in this historic occasion. NAUTH's Transformation Story: From Relocation to Modernization – What Has Changed? Benigno Aquino III once said, "With proper governance, life will improve for all." Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi, was established in 1992, exactly 33 years ago, transitioning from a general hospital to a tertiary institution. But, the condition of its temporary site did not reflect the status of a tertiary hospital. While operating at the temporary site, NAUTH faced numerous challenges, including dilapidated buildings, space constraints, and staff congestion in offices. It also operated with a 300-bed capacity, further limiting its efficiency and global visibility. However, following the relocation of NAUTH to its permanent site just three years ago, the narrative changed dramatically. What seemed like a daunting and nearly impossible task—given the enormous resources required—was made possible through the hard work and determination of the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Joseph Ugboaja (OON), Ochinanwata, and his dedicated team. Through the strategic application of his 9 Strategic Pillars Policy, the CMD was able to overcome previous barriers. Today, NAUTH is the talk of the town, with its global visibility significantly enhanced. The hospital is now attracting potential investors—both local and international—who are eager to partner with it in pursuit of medical excellence. Upon assuming office, the CMD expanded the scope of the NAUTH Management Committee by inviting top experts to join his transformation team. His goal was to elevate NAUTH to rank among the top three teaching hospitals in Nigeria by 2030, ultimately aiming to make it the best. The team remains focused and committed to achieving this goal. The CMD's passion for NAUTH has brought about significant transformations in its operations, earning him praises from all quarters. During the inaugural visit of the new NAUTH Board Chairman, Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori, he lauded the administration’s progress and pledged to leverage his political connections to secure additional funding and projects for the hospital. Just days after Hon. Dalori’s visit, he facilitated a meeting between the CMD and the Vice-President of Nigeria, His Excellency Kashim Shettima (GCON), where the CMD presented his achievements and plans for NAUTH. As a result of this engagement, the Vice-President is scheduled to visit NAUTH on Thursday, April 10, 2025, to celebrate the second anniversary of the commissioning of the hospital's permanent site, and to commission Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administrative Complex, a legacy project by NAUTH. Indeed, much has changed at NAUTH. The myth of unnecessary delays in patient care has become a thing of the past. Many medical consultants now have spacious, well-equipped offices in which to attend to patients—an improvement from the temporary site. At the permanent site, office spaces and parking lots are abundant, eliminating previous limitations. The relocation has also allowed for the employment of additional staff to fill new roles, further enhancing the hospital's capacity to serve the public. The staff have received further training and are now better motivated, leading to improved job performance. The improved road network and functional solar lights throughout the hospital grounds deserve commendation. Additionally, electric vehicles that transport patients and caregivers between various sections of the complex have made patient movement more efficient. Patients also appreciate the introduction of multiple payment options, including POS, USSD, online bank transfers, cash deposits, and e-wallets, making payments for drugs and laboratory tests more convenient than ever before. The addition of side labs at strategic locations across the medical complexes has made it easier for patients to submit laboratory samples. Furthermore, the introduction of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and RIS (Radiology Information System) has greatly improved the storage and digital transmission of patients' medical images, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans. The X-ray section has transitioned from analogue to digital, enabling faster processing and improved patient care. These enhanced medical facilities are also positively impacting the training of university medical students who come for clinical postings. In addition, NAUTH has established its own Oxygen Production Plant, ensuring that oxygen is readily available for emergency cases, saving lives, and eliminating the need to rely on external sources. Notably, the Chief Medical Director and his team are tirelessly working to align NAUTH's administration and protocols with international standards, a result of their strategic engagements with renowned global medical institutions. Looking ahead, NAUTH is transitioning into super-specialties, aiming to provide top-tier medical treatments and become a leading medical tourism hub in Nigeria. By replicating successful international models, the hospital aims to save lives and improve the life expectancy of Nigerians. The positive impacts of the CMD's strategic engagements are already being felt. Bright Anyanwu, PAA. bo.anyanwu@unizik.edu.ng. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15SHhK5Yg2/

A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE: CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF 2ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE COMMISSIONING OF NAUTH PERMANENT SITE. "Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal" --- Earl Nightingale. ` Who could have imagined that within the three years of the appointment of Professor Joseph Ugboaja (OON), Ochinanwata, as the substantive Chief Medical Director, he would drastically reposition Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital as one of the leading tertiary hospitals in Nigeria. Yes, it is happening! An epitome of vision. Instructively, the journey of making NAUTH rank among the three best tertiary hospitals in Nigeria by 2030, and ultimately, the best is gradually coming to pass. The vision which according to the Chief Medical Director is highly achievable because NAUTH has the capacity and potentials to realize it. Interestingly, the journey is still on, and the lines are falling into pleasant places. The big picture is becoming a reality. To God be the Glory! Come 9th April, 2025, the General Public will gather at NAUTH (Permanent site - Akamili) to celebrate the 2nd year anniversary of the commissioning of the permanent site. A celebration of leadership excellence by the Chief Medical Director and his hardworking team. Notably, the relocation of NAUTH to her permanent site was a feat achieved by the CMD and his team under one year in office. Prior to that, the Hospital had operated at the temporary site for 30 years with a-bed capacity of 300, and under a strait environment which made excellent patient care extremely difficult. Importantly, after the relocation of the Hospital to her permanent site, NAUTH has since then being on a trajectory development with new projects springing up almost on a daily basis. The landscape has been truly transformed - laying a solid foundation for a higher medical excellence. Today, NAUTH has a-bed capacity of 1,300 and still counting as against its 300 beds capacity before his assumption in office! The Chief Medical Director has continued to leverage on one of the Hospital's policy - Strong Corporate Governance, Collaboration & Partnership to build a mega medical tourism hub. The patients' through-put has a tremendously improved with excellent complementary medical services - leading to higher patients satisfaction rate. This has further boosted the patronage of the Hospital services from the larger parts of the State and neighboring States. Expectedly, the 2nd year anniversary would draw together the _crème de la crème_ in the health and education sectors who would converge to celebrate the leadership excellence of the Chief Medical Director and his hardworking team while building on the momentum of the previous achievements they had so far recorded in office. Instructively, one of the highlights of the event would be the official commissioning of *Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administrative Complex* by the Vice-President of Nigeria, His Excellency Kashim Shettima (GCON), a legacy project of the 2nd year anniversary, and laying of foundation stones for other capital projects by His Excellency. Honestly, the CMD and his team are not resting on their oars yet until NAUTH is made the best of the best. At the moment, the following projects, namely; Intensive Care Unit (IUC); Laboratory Complex; Theatre Complex; Pharmacy Complex; Children Ward Complex; Female Surgical Ward Complex; and Male Surgical Ward Complex are at the roofing stage and while some are undergoing painting. This is in addition of the block work which had commenced at the Urological Conference and Urological ICT Buildings which are progressing rapidly. Hopefully, in few weeks from now, these projects mentioned shall be ready for official commissioning - opening another fresh milestone in the Hospital development. The achievements of the Chief Medical Director so far in office has perfectly aligned with Mr. President health policy of providing quality healthcare to Nigerians. This calls for collaboration and partnership from spirited Nigerians to come forward and build further partnerships with NAUTH towards making it emerge the best tertiary hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa. Yes, it is possible! Bright Anyanwu, PAA.

I-WITNESS REPORT. THE MASSIVE ROAD CONSTRUCTIONS IN NNEWI CITY: KUDOS TO MR. SOLUTION. Part 1. ```"The Future Belongs To The Competent; Get Good,Get Better, Be The Best - Brian Tracy."``` An active observer in Nnewi will note the massive road constructions currently ongoing at every nook and cranny of the City. This is quite unprecedented in the history of the City. The road constructions are many, massive, fully appropriated and simultaneously progressing. Nnewi has not seen it in this fashion before. Pointedly, from the dualization of the existing old roads, to the constructions of new roads, building of culverts, water channels, bridges and many more. Truly, Nnewi has been remembered. A sigh of relief is made across the breath of the City. Good governance has finally come home. Kudos to Mr. Solution, His Excellency, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. Nnewi, arguably, one of the ancient cities in the Igboland deserved all the attentions it is receiving now. It is the centre of commerce and industry of the East. The Nnewi motorcycle spare parts (Nkwo Nnewi) is well known throughout West Africa. It receives visitors from China, Taiwan and other Asian countries, partnering with the local industries for various manufacturing items, while contributing immensely to the growth of GDP of Nigeria. Amazingly, Nnewi is the home of the firsts. The first billionaire in Nigeria - Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu was from Nnewi. The first Igbo man to own and drive a car was HRM Igwe Orizu I. The longest serving and living Monarch in Africa is HRM Igwe Kenneth Orizu III (62 years on the throne and 100 years by age), very healthy and his cognitive reasoning still sharp. This should be properly reflected in the Guinness World Records for posterity. More so, the first wholly made in Nigeria motorcycle was by National Agency For Science And Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) based in Nnewi, and the first indigenous car manufacturing plant (INNOSON) is also based in Nnewi. Nnewi boasts of great and flourishing industries such as Ibeto Group of Companies, INNOSON Group of Companies, Cutix and ADswitch, Uru Industries Ltd, Tummy Tummy (KOTEC), Cento Group of Companies, Coscharis Companies, Ebunso Nigeria Ltd, John White Industries, Ejiamatu Group of Companies, CHICASON Groups, Louis Carter Group, etc. Interestingly, it also has the fastest growing tertiary hospital in Africa, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, the bourgeoning mega medical tourist centre in Nigeria, under the leadership of Professor Joseph Ugboaja (OON), the Chief Medical Director. To this end, the many roads constructions in the City are totally in order. They are very sweet and have a good social taste. A welcome development indeed considering the industrial nature of the City. Specifically, the roads would link up the rural communities to the urban centres for ease of movement of farm produce to major markets; stimulates local businesses by encouraging easier movement of goods and services; create more employment opportunities in the construction industries; facilitate easy movement of children to schools; boost quick access to healthcare service centres for improved healthcare delivery; improved quality of life by reducing travel time, boost convenience and well-being; and greatly assist on effective security surveillance. The icing on the cake to the good works of Mr. Solution was his recent promulgation of Anambra State Homeland Security Law - 2025, and launching of the special operation known as "Operation Udo Ga Achi" to compliment the regular policing in the State. Since the promulgation, the operation has drastically reduce kidnapping, cultism, drug peddling, and other related crimes in the City. The security in the state has greatly improved thus, reviving the confidence of investors and tourists to flock the City. Happily, the people are now sleeping with their two eyes closed. Notably, the complementary achievements of Hon. Echezona Anazodo (Mayor), Executive Chairman of Nnewi-North, in the office so far, are giving excellent credence to the good works of Mr. Governor. Today, sanity is being restored, and the usual road accidents have drastically reduced especially among the motorists/cyclists following the restoration of the traffic lights in the City. Remarkably, all the critical stakeholders of the City - motorists, cyclists, traders, farmers, hawkers, students, businessmen, professionals and civil servants are enchanting songs of appreciation and commendation to Mr. Solution. Indeed, Mr. Soludo is the Solution. Let your good works continue to speak for you. Finally, the future, truly belongs to the competent. The maiden visit took place on Thursday, 27th February, 2025. Emphatically, the visit was a symbolic one; seamless, friendly and excursional, especially, to most of the Team members who were visiting Nnewi city for the first time. Nnewi, a serene and peaceful city, rich in cultural heritage and well known for business enterprises in West Africa. Importantly, the maiden visit of the Pro-Chancellor afforded him the rare opportunity to assess the real situation of the College. The assessment report would further guide the Pro-Chancellor in articulating the Council Policy Roadmap that shall usher massive development for the College. 1.4 His First Point of Call At Nnewi: The Pro-Chancellor and his Team, upon arrival in Nnewi City, visited Igwe Nnewi to pay him homage and to seek his royal blessings. At the Palace, the Pro-Chancellor's Team was warmly received by Igwe and his cabinet, including Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, the CEO, CHISCO Groups. In his brief remarks, Igwe appreciated the honour and the respect by the new Pro-Chancellor to pay him homage before commencing his official duties. He informed the Pro-Chancellor that Nnewi has a rich cultural heritage. He, then, prayed for the Pro-Chancellor and his Team while noting that as he had honored him, he would go with blessings. He thanked God for his health, wisdom and mental alertness; and the support from the Igwe-In-Council, while commending them for the unity and sense of purpose in the Council. Thereafter, the Provost requested for Igwe's support in safeguarding the properties of the College, especially against land grabbers who are encroaching into the College lands at Okofia premises. 1.5 The Reception of the Pro-Chancellor By The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital At The Permanent Site: The Pro-Chancellor and his Team were affectionately received by Professor Ogochukwu Ezejiofor, the C'MAC, on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Professor Joseph Ugboaja (OON), who was unavoidably absent. Professor Ezejiofor was accompanied by Professor Chigozie Ifeadike, Coordinating DCMAC, and Mrs. Uche Joy Ugochukwu, Director of Administration, in welcoming the Pro-Chancellor and his Team. In his remarks at the interactive session, Professor Ezejiofor emphasized that both Institutions are like siamese twins who work and collaborate for the training of the medical students. He noted that none can lexist without the other. He reiterated further that the ongoing infrastructural developments in the Hospital were meant for the good and betterment of the two institutions. He later pledged, on behalf of the Teaching Hospital, to continue to work with the University for the good of all. Responding, the Pro-Chancellor, sued for continuous collaboration of both institutions for greater development. After the interactive session, the Pro-Chancellor and his Team, very briefly, toured the College facilities in the premises before heading to the Okofia Premises. 1.6 At the Okofia Premises - Commissioning of the New CBT Centre: The Pro-Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and their Teams, were received by the Provost of the College Prof Jude-Kennedy C Emejulu along with the Staff and Students, at Okofia, with pomp and pageantry, as the Members and Students, who came out en-masse to welcome him. The Team proceeded to the new CBT Centre for the official commissioning. The new CBT has a capacity of 100 computers for computer-based quizzes and in-course assessments, and powered by solar energy. By this development, the College students would no longer go to Awka for any computer based test. While commissioning the Centre, the Pro-Chancellor commended Professor Ikechukwu Onyenwe, the Special Assistant to Vice-Chancellor (ICT) who developed the CBT software internally. After the commissioning, the Pro-Chancellor and his Team toured the facilities in the premises for a first hand assessment. 1.7 The Pro-Chancellor's Interactions with the College Community: At the College Auditorium, the Pro-Chancellor had a convivial interaction with the Staff/Students of the College. The session was moderated by the Provost and assisted by Professor Joseph Umunnah. The Pro-Chancellor applauded the Students for their immaculate dressing but, charged them to take good care of the environment to reflect their sparkling dressing. Speaking on behalf of the College Staff, Professor Samuel C Meludu decried the rot, neglect and underdevelopment of the College by the previous administrations of the University. He drew the attention of the Pro-Chancellor to the deplorable conditions of all the access roads to the Okofia Premises, which is affecting Staff motivation to work and Students' commitment to their studies. He noted that in this strait condition, the College has continued to produce graduates who are readily sought after in the world labour market. He, then, appreciated the Pro-Chancellor for the visit, and commended the former Pro-Chancellor of the University, AVM Larry Koinyan (Rtd), for approving the construction of the internal roads in Okofia premises. Thereafter, Professor Meludu passionately appealed to the Pro-Chancellor to focus more on Nnewi Campus, which would help to project him. The President of the Students Association Government (SAG), Comrade Emmanuel Akuma, spoke on behalf of the Students. He appreciated the visit of the Pro-Chancellor, and specifically requested him to fast track the rehabilitation /construction of access roads to Okofia premises; assist in the restoration of light on Campus and help to complete the rehabilitation of Chukwuneke Hostel, and construction of new students' hostels on Campus. Reacting, the Pro-Chancellor promised to work on the construction of access roads to Okofia premises, restoration of light on Campus and construction of students hostels with a caveat that the Students/Staff of the College must take good care of the facilities and the environment. This moral pact was unanimously acceded to by the staff and students present at the massive reception attended by nearly 600 persons. Adding to the promises made by the Pro-Chancellor, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph I Ikechebelu, informed the College Community that the Pro-Chancellor had promised to use his political reach to mobilize CBN back to the abandoned hostel site, in order to complete the construction of the CBN Hostel. He further disclosed that the University was working to assist the College in offsetting the accumulated EDDC electricity bill, and noted that within two weeks, power supply would be restored back on Campus. On the abandoned Chukwuneke Hostel, he assured the College that before the end of March, the rehabilitation works would be completed for students to pack into the Hostel. Professor Bertrand Obi Nwosu gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the College. He noted that the interactive session was the first of its kind in the College. He assured the new Pro-Chancellor of the College's support to his administration, and informed him that the College has capable manpower to assist him in any capacity to deliver on his job. He requested him to pay a closer attention to the infrastructural deficiencies in the College and land encroachments by the indigenes of Okofia community. Professor Ejeatuluchukwu Obi, the Deputy Provost, thereafter, said the closing prayers to end the interactive session. The Provost, then entertained the Team in his office to renew their strength before departing to INNOSON for a courtesy visit. 1.8 At The INNOSON House: The Chairman/CEO, INNOSON Motors, Chief. Dr. Innocent Ifeadiso Chukwuma (CON) warmly received the Team in his palatial mansion in Nnewi. He appreciated Mr. President, Sen Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, for appointing Barrister Kukoyi as the new Pro-Chancellor of the University. He, then, described Professor Ikechebelu as a very good man who will make a good Vice-Chancellor of the University. He further reiterated that President Tinubu has a good plan for Nigerians, and he solicited for the support of Nigerians to help him to actualize his agenda for the country. He used the opportunity to request Mr. President to increase the salary of civil servants, noting that once it is done, everything in Nigeria would stabilize. He gave an assurance for his continuous support towards the growth of the University. Responding, the Pro-Chancellor described INNOSON as one of the great pillars of the State, and considered it a great honour to pay him a visit. He appreciated INNOSON for all his supports, benevolence, magnanimity, and partnership with the University thus far, and kindly requested him to continue to support the University. As part of his culture in hosting his guests, the Billionaire INNOSON lavished the team with choice wines to the delight of all, and still provided some takeaway packages for us. THE RISING RATING OF NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, NNEWI. It was Lee Kuan Yew, the former Prime Minister of Singapore who at 1959 inherited a disjointed economy. The tiny Island whose after its separation from Malaysia in 1960 has only manufacturing as the main industry with no natural resources to export. Consequently, Lee deployed his transformational policy and his foresightedness which helped to transform the less resourceful country into the ranks of New York, London and Switzerland as a global financial hub. Interestingly, In 2013, its GDP Per Capita was one of the best in the world. Later, Lee's style of running Singapore earned him many accolades and was once described by Richard Nixon as "A big man on a small stage who in other times and other places might have attained the world stature of a Churchill, Disraeli or a Gladstone". Conversely, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi in 1992 operated in a strait environment with about 300 beds capacity. The condition apparently hindered its professional healthcare delivery, efficiency, expansion and visibility. This further affected the staff morale with many of them without befitting offices and working aids to discharge their duties as expected. This was the state of the Hospital before the appointment of Professor Joseph Odirichukwu Ugboaja, OON (Ochinanwata) as the Substantive Chief Medical Director of the Hospital. Moments after his assumption as the CMD, he brought a new narrative to the leadership of the Hospital. The transformation of the Hospital changed massively under his watch. He came to the post with Vision 2030 mantra - geared towards making the Hospital rank amongst the best three teaching hospitals in Nigeria by 2030, and ultimately the best in Nigeria. The vision was anchored on 9 Strategic Pillars - which the Chief among them was Strong Cooperate Governance; Infrastructural Development; Use of State-of-the-art/Modern equipment; and Partnership & Collaborations. The 9 Strategic Pillars was not a mere policy rhetoric but a working vision. Like Lee Kuan Yew, the CMD had a clear roadmap of where he wants to take the Hospital to. Within a short while in office, he sourced resources to transform the Hospital into a mega medical tourist. He leveraged on his conviviality with critical stakeholders in the health sector to achieve the remarkable feat. Emphatically, his policy paid-off with the official commissioning of the permanent site of the Hospital on May 19, 2023 by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), the former President of Nigeria. The transition to the permanent site was made after 30 years of its operation at the temporary site. As at today, the Hospital has installed 1,400 beds - making it the largest hospital in Nigeria. The infrastructural landscape has also changed with many internal road networks constructed, and many state-of-the-art facilities. The services at the Hospital is backed with cutting-edge technology for advanced medical treatment and administrative functions. Notably, the patients' throughput has continued to increase with attendant quality healthcare. This has led to gradual decline of death cases. More so, the Hospital ambiance has boosted the psychological healing of the patients. Currently, the Hospital is advancing into a more higher-specialty treatments for quality healthcare service delivery to Nigerians. The Hospital is currently partnering with international stakeholders in making this a reality. Assuredly, come 2030, the Hospital under the watch of the CMD would not only rank among the best three teaching hospitals in Nigeria, but ultimately, the best. As the rating keeps rising, let's continue to support the Hospital Management. Bright Anyanwu, PAA, writes from Nnewi. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18DXDhRRRq/

Professor Charles Ikechukwu Okafor Delivers His Valedictory Lecture: ~~ Describes Attaining The Age of 70 As A Great Privilege And Mercy From God. ~~ Expounds Charles Okafor's Gynaecological Procedure. ~~ Canvases For The Establishment of Feto-Maternal Medicine Unit In The Teaching Hospital. Preamble: On Thursday, 19, December, 2024, the great day of the Lord, the College cum Teaching Hospital Community converged at the Chief Gilbert Uzodike Auditorium to listen to the last official lecture of Professor Charles Okafor, a renowned Gynaecologist, a doyen and guru in the field of medical practice. It was a special day for his valedictory lecture titled: Overcoming Challenges in Gynaecological Surgeries. The lecture was his personal memoirs and notes reeled out from his 42 years of medical practice and 33 years as a clinical lecturer. Convivialy, the event also marked as a reunion for his old folks who came to rejoice with Professor Charles on his momentous exit from active civil service. His Primary/Secondary School Days: Professor Charles had a humble beginning. He was a bright chap during his primary school days - passing out with a Distinction in his First School Leaving Certificate at St. Mathew's Anglican Primary School, Nibo in 1960s. In his secondary school days, he was so intelligent which was evident on his university entrance examination performance. He sat for medical entrance examinations for three universities, namely; University of Nigeria, University of Benin, and University of Ife at same time. Expectedly, Professor Charles passed all the examinations at first sitting. He later chose University of Nigeria where he study Medicine. Subsequently, he graduated in June, 1982 as a brilliant Medical Doctor, and was one of the best 10 medical students in his set. His Residency Training: Striding, he commenced his residency programme in 1991, and passed all his fellowship examinations at first attempt. A rare occurrence in those days. He remembered vividly his primary examination, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, College of Surgeons in 1991 where out of 250 fellowship students who sat for the examination, only 11 students made it, and he was one of them. Appointment As A Clinical Lecturer: Professor Charles was appointed as a clinical lecturer in the University in 2002. He later rose to the rank of Professor in 2013 with dint of hard work, diligent and perseverance. The lecture: Expounding his lecture, he noted with humility the rare privilege of operating on professors, professors' wives and judges. However, due to his growing clinical proficiency, his clienteles had so much grew that most of them had come to revere him, and often insists that he must be the one to operate on them. He remembered an emotional case of one of his highly placed patient who had an issue of vaginal hysterectomy, and regularly visits USA to see her daughter but refused every pressure from her to have the surgery done in USA. She insisted that it must be Professor Charles in Nigeria who must perform the surgery. Eventually, the woman and her daughter came down to Nigeria from USA for the surgery. To the glory of God, the surgery was done successfully. No form of blood transfusion. The woman started walking around within 24 hours of the operation. Her daughter later acknowledged that there were good doctors practicing in Nigeria. His Ward Rounds: During his ward rounds, Professor Charles had always insisted on applying every academic discussions to the management of the patients under review. He would often ask how the discussions would help better the health of the patient. He wished that this tradition would continue after his exit from the system because it would be so easy to forget the patient in the midst of extensive academic arguments. Furthermore, he was so empathic to patients especially the indigents - whom on several occasions rallies round to raise resources for their treatment. His Passion: Professor Charles was a consummate surgeon who loves performing surgery. He noted that before any surgery operation, he would pray for the success of the operation and then plays his favorite music - Don Moen or Gaither throughout the surgery session. He later found a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from performing surgery than traveling around for conferences and workshops. His Feto-Maternal Symposium: Notably, in June 2018, Professor Charles organized a very successful Feto-Maternal Medicine Symposium with Professor Dili Anumba from Sheffield, UK and other specialists. Arising from the success of the symposium, he canvassed for the establishment of feto-maternal unit at the Teaching Hospital especially now that it had acquired abundant spaces at the permanent site. He further proposed that services like the Assisted Reproduction and Radiotherapy should be considered if possible through Private-Public Partnership to save our people the stress of traveling far to obtain the services. His Gynaecological Procedure: Remarkably, Professor Charles expounded his discovered gynaecological procedure called the Double Procedure In Surgery - Combined Abdominal Hysterectomy And Pelvic Floor Repair; The Charles Okafor's Procedure which had been successfully administered to many patients. He posited that the gynae surgeon's eyes should be on the two fallopian tubes and the imaginary thin cavity between the two tubes while encucleating the fibriod masses. That when there was only one fallopian tube in the patient, one needs to take extra care of that tube even if it means leaving small fibroid nodules very close to the tube. Furthermore, inserting foley catheter into the uterine cavity pre op would be quite helpful, and would make the indentification of the endometrial cavity easy. The catheter may be retained post op when considered necessary, but if the uterine cavity was large, it would not be useful to retain it. Therefore, he recommends that an experienced gynaecological surgeon or gynae-oncologist and a general surgeon should be in theatre before a case can be classified inoperable. His Recommendations: Consequently, to overcome the challenges in gynaecological surgeries, Professor Charles made the following recommendations: 1) Detailed and careful pre op assessment of a patient can change the plan from TAH to vaginal hysterectomy. 2) Relevant laboratory and radiological investigations may reveal the need to invite other specialists to co-manage the patient. 3) Ultrasonography is very important in gynaecological practice to handle very ambiguous cases. 4) Resist every attempt for urgent surgery. Insist on proper preparation. 5) Good anaesthesia is very important during operation. Don't be the surgeon and the anaesthetist at the same time. Share the responsibilities and share the money. 6) Always subscribe to a strong and knowledgeable assistant during surgery operation to help overcome difficult situations. 7) Be humble to listen to good suggestions especially from your juniors. Avoid unnecessary haste to impress observers about your skills and speed. It may disappoint you one day.9) Even after the detailed pre op assessment, you may still find the need to invite a fellow gynaecologist, a general surgeon or urologist for further examinations, this may save life of the patient. 10) Always refresh your mind from surgical books or the internet while preparing for surgery procedure. 11) Finally, learn to put God first in all your endeavors. That is, if you fear and honour God, you would have nothing else to fear. A man that fears God runs away from evil. Appreciation: Professor Charles thanked his amiable wife - Professor Chisolum Okafor for her lovely support and encouragement; Mrs Uche Uche whom God used to train him and was still alive to witness the event, and his other siblings. He further thanked the Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Ikechebelu for correcting his book when he was preparing for his part II examination. He deeply appreciated this kind gesture; the Chief Medical Director, Professor Joseph Ugboaja, OON, and his Team; the Provost of the College, Professor Gerald Udigwe; the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Gladys Ahaneku, mni; Dr.Tommy Thomas; Professor J.I.B Adinma; Professor O.C Ikepeze, and others for their wonderful supports. He also appreciated all his mentees, especially Professor Ikechukwu Mbachu whom he deliberately groomed to succeed him. How People Sees Him: Professor Charles was later described by his old mates, colleagues and mentees as a very perfect gentleman who never flirt during his undergraduate days. He was not among the clique who usually send their roommates on an emergency errand, or travels with a "handbag". He was a devoted Christian and a loving father. A pillar in his Chapel and Full Gospel Business Men Fellowship. Always on time for his classes and surgery operation. A lover of justice and fairness - who hates suppression, injustice and oppression. A generous man, very empathic and pragmatic. His attention to details was topnotch. He was less ambiguous and communicates in concise and articulate manner. At the event, the Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, (PhD; FAMedS, FNAmed) Akachina-eme-ile was ably represented by the Provost, Professor Gerald Udigwe who delivered his goodwill message to the Celebrant; the Chief Medical Director, NAUTH, Professor Joseph Ugboaja, OON (Ochinanwata) was ably represented by Dr. Dubem Onyejiaka who delivered his goodwill message to the celebrant. They appreciated him for his exemplary leadership especially during his time as the Head of Department, Obstetrics & Gynaecology both at the College and the Hospital. His Contentment: As his monthly salary alert set to stop, Professor Charles had long ago prepared his mind about it while drawing consolation from the word of God which says godliness with contentment is great gain. Leaving on High Ovation: Due to his clinical expertise, many of his mentees had suggested that he should apply to the Teaching Hospital Management for a contract appointment. He clearly understood their emotions but later objected their plea while noting that the Department had gained enough consultants and that it would be proper to allow the young ones the space to grow. A Way Forward: He frowns at truancy and indiscipline among young consultants, and admonished them to learn to acquire skills, character and sense of responsibility to preserve the pride of the profession. Once again congratulations 👏🎉 to Professor Charles Ikechukwu Okafor on your meritorious service to the nation. Indeed, you retired very strong - hale and hearty. You delivered your valedictory lecture without any walking aid. Your lecture was so lively and well coordinated. You shown no sign of amnesia throughout the lecture - meaning that at your 7th floor, your cognitive reasoning was still sharp and very active. No wonder you had requested that your Departmental Morning Reviews should be made hybrid to enables you to keep refreshing your mind while contributing to the growth of the system. Finally, we trust your beautiful and amiable wife - Professor Chisolum Okafor to keep you fresh and healthy as we hope to keep drawing from your wealth of experience. To God be the Glory!
