Kieran Maguire and Stefan Borson have agreed it's 'unlikely' that Manchester City and the Premier League will reach a settlement before the 115 charges of Premier League regulations are heard. In February 2023, the English top flight charged its champions with 115 alleged breaches of financial regulations. These include accusations that the club failed to provide accurate financial information and failed to cooperate with investigations spanning nine seasons (2009/10 to 2017/18). Manchester City strongly deny any wrongdoing and the case is set to be heard by an independent commission later this year. Speaking on the 'We’re Not Really Here' podcast by BBC Radio Manchester, football finance expert Maguire and lawyer Borson, who was once a financial adviser at the Etihad Stadium, were asked whether there's a chance that the two parties agree on a settlement before the hearing. "It would certainly save a lot of money on behalf of both sides," said Maguire. "It could mean that both parties could claim a victory, but I think in terms of public opinion and the reaction there's likely to be from both the media, and I suspect from other clubs, it's not really something that would be palatable to the Premier League nor City." Borson added: "There are ways in which it could occur within the Premier League rules. But I think they missed their window for a settlement. Now that it's public and now that we're so close to the hearing, it would be very unlikely for them to find common ground politically to get this settled." In an interview with The Times in May, Richard Masters provided a brief update on the hearing. The Premier League CEO said: "All we have said is that a date has been set for the hearing. We haven't said when that is. Our rulebook requires these commissions to be held in private, and everything to be confidential." Then, speaking to the Evening Standard, Dan Chapman, head of employment and sports at Leathes Prior, claimed no punishment should be ruled out – from fines to expulsion from the Premier League. The solicitor said: "Considerable uncertainty remains on the current status of the Premier League proceedings against Manchester City. |
The National Coalition of Northern Lawyers and Public Interest Activists on Friday, lauded the Federal High Court ruling annulling the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. This is as the group described the ruling as a vindication of the people’s stand “On the illegality of the Kano State Government’s actions in dissolving the Kano Emirates and dethroning Emir Ado Bayero. Recall that Justice Abdullahi Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano on Thursday, June 20, 2024, overturned all the actions taken by Governor Abba Yusuf after the Kano Emirate law was amended by the State House of Assembly on May 23, 2024. Justice Liman, among others, faulted the governor’s assent to the bill and the presentation of an appointment letter to Sanusi on May 24, 2024, citing a court order directing all parties to maintain the status quo ante. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, convenerof the coalition, Napoleon Otache, commended the court for upholding the rule of law and protecting the sanctity of traditional institutions, adding that the ruling is a victory for justice, truth, and the people of Kano State. Given the ruling, the group called on Yusuf to apologise to Emir Ado Bayero for “The humiliation and hardship inflicted upon him due to the unlawful dissolution of the Kano Emirates.’ He also urged the governor to respect the court’s decision and work towards peace and reconciliation in the emirate. He said, “In nullifying the illegality embarked upon by the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf and his associates, the court has again proven that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man. “We have been reminded that might is not right and that the will of the people matters in addition to the demonstration that those who are in the right need not resort to violence to defend their rights. “The court’s ruling has demonstrated that the rule of law must be obeyed since the defect that led to the nullification of the re-appointment of the 16th Emir resulted from the governor rushing to implement a law that the court had ruled to be placed on hold. “It is now also clear that rushing to a slew of actions based on illegitimate premises would not make such illegal actions endure. The governor and Muhammadu Sanusi II must have realised by now that all they achieved with the drama they acted amounted to a nullity and a tragic waste of public resources to massage their egos. “The ruling should be a wake-up call to the Kano State Government that it cannot introduce a state-level dictatorship as envisaged by the governor, one that sought to obliterate the constitutionally guaranteed separation of powers among the executive, legislature and judiciary.” He added, “The judiciary has given the rude awakening that it is there to correct the conversion of the Kano State House of Assembly into the rubberstamp factory that churned out destructive legislations to satisfy Governor Yusuf’s whims. “The National Coalition of Northern Lawyers and Public Interest Activists is of the view that it is time for Governor Yusuf to acknowledge that he has lost the battle in this matter of the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. “Even though it was not the purpose for which he occupied office, he is welcome to continue with the imaginary war he is waging on his perceived enemies, but, this particular battle on the emirate issue is one he must acknowledge is lost. “We consequently call on the Kano State Government not to waste the taxpayers’ resources on frivolous appeals but to continue to work with Emir Ado Bayero as the duly recognised Emir of Kano Emirate Council with his full official paraphernalia of office in the interest of peace and in accordance with the order of the court. We make this call knowing that all other pending legal challenges on the matter would naturally align with the Federal High Court ruling.” Dirisu Yakubu Dirisu, has over 12 years experience covering political parties, National Assembly, sports, transportation, etc, and currently works with The PUNCH |

NNPC, TotalEnergies To Develop $550m Gas Processing Plant In Rivers State Business NNPC and TotalEnergies are set to build a $550 million gas processing facility in Rivers State to boost supply. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and its partner, TotalEnergies, have agreed to invest $550 million for the development of a gas processing facility in southern Rivers State to boost exports and domestic supplies of gas. An official at NNPC who is privy to the agreement disclosed this to Reuters on Wednesday, saying the investment would include a gas processing plant and a pipeline. TotalEnergies declined to comment while the NNPC source said an announcement would be made this week, according to the international news agency. The gas processing facility would be built on the Ubeta onshore gas field, jointly owned by TotalEnergies and NNPC and would supply gas to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) plant, the report stated. The NLNG is a consortium between NNPC, Shell, TotalEnergies and Italy’s Eni (ENI). When completed, the plant would generate 350 million standard cubic feet per day of gas (mmscf/d) and 10,000 barrels per day of associated liquids, the source stated. Nigeria, which holds Africa’s largest natural gas reserves of over 209 trillion cubic feet (tcf) flares – or burns off gas from its oil fields because it lacks processing infrastructure and faces capital constraints. The latest investment could mean President Bola Tinubu’s bid to attract investment into Nigeria’s energy sector is beginning to succeed, analysts said. “The government will hope this offers confidence not only in the quality of the Nigerian resource base, but also in the government’s pledge to improve ease of doing business,” Reuters quoted the Director, sub-Saharan Africa at Political Risk Consultancy Horizon Engage, Clementine Wallop, to have said. Energy analysts hold the view that Nigeria has failed to increase its exports to the European Union after the bloc sought alternative supplies to make up for lost Russian imports because of the Ukraine War. Locally, Nigeria is struggling to feed its gas power plants that generate most of its grid electricity, the report added. |

Channels Tv Logo Live TV The court's decision followed a fresh set of amended charges filed by the FIRS after Binance appointed a Nigerian representative named Ayodele Omotilewa. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court has discharged Binance executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, from the tax evasion allegations levelled against them by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). ADVERTISEMENT The court’s decision followed a fresh set of amended charges filed by the FIRS after Binance appointed a Nigerian representative named Ayodele Omotilewa. The FIRS had initially filed legal proceedings against Binance, Gambaryan, and Nadeem on March 22, 2024, alleging tax evasion. The amended lawsuit claimed that Binance and Gambaryan failed to collect and remit various taxes as stipulated by law. ADVERTISEMENT During the proceedings, Binance’s legal counsel informed the court about the appointment of its Nigerian representative, which led to the FIRS discontinuing the case against Gambaryan and Nadeem. The fresh charge against Binance accused the platform of offering services to Nigerians without deducting necessary Value Added Taxes (VAT), among other tax-related offenses. There was a debate in court regarding whether the Binance representative should enter the dock and take a plea on behalf of the corporation. The defense argued that Nigerian law doesn’t mandate such a procedure for corporate representatives. Ultimately, the judge struck out the previous charges and names of Gambaryan and Nadeem from the case, directing it to proceed with Binance alone. ADVERTISEMENT The court adjourned to July 12th for plea and instructed both parties to submit written addresses on the issue of the representative’s presence in the dock. This development comes amidst heightened scrutiny of cryptocurrency activities in Nigeria, with Binance facing separate prosecutions and accusations related to foreign exchange rates and money laundering. |

The third phase of palliative distribution of rice and maize for people of Delta State was on Thursday flagged-off by the State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori. Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has flagged-off phase three of the state’s grains palliative distribution exercise with a charge on civil servants and other workers in the state to engage in small scale farming to mitigate rising hunger across the country. Oborevwori gave the charge at the Delta Agricultural Procurement Agency, (DAPA) Warehouse, Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state. The Governor, who said food security was very important in the light of the rising incidence of hunger in the country, charged the subsidy palliative distribution committee to ensure that all farmers were carried along, insisting that not all farmers were members of the farmers’ association. According to him “We have done the first and second phases. But we decided to do this very one in a grand style because, if you don’t announce yourself, nobody will announce you. “All the things we have been doing for the past one year, we don’t even showcase them. Some people will not know that we are doing a lot. On the issue of palliatives, Delta State was the first in Nigeria to consider the civil servants. “When the issue of fuel subsidy removal came, we looked at it, it was real hard time for our civil servants; we discussed and the first thing we did was to pay all the outstanding promotion arrears amounting to over N5.6 billion. We didn’t even know how the future was going to be then. “That wasn’t enough; at the critical time of the fuel subsidy removal, we also sat down and even with a lot of workers of 50,193 strength. We also agreed that for the 50, 193 workers, we will be giving them small stipends of N10,000 for three months. We did it and it cost the state over N1.5 billion. “As for the issue of this palliative, we shared it last year; we are here today to say we are grateful to God for what He has been doing for us. Today, we are going to flag off distribution of the rice and maize that we have received. “We received 24,000 units of 25kg bags of rice from Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria RIFAN; we received 4,700 units of 25kg bags of Garri and 18,770 units of 50kg bags of maize from the National Emergency Management Agency and the National Security Adviser’s Office. “This palliative was received last month, which is May, 2024 and we are grateful to all the donor agencies for their support. “You may also recall that between August and September 2023, we received 17,400 units of 50kg bags of rice and 40,000 units of 50kg bags of maize in a joint venture with the Federal Government. “The items were distributed across the state in the first and second phases of this programme to take care of most especially, the most vulnerable in our state. “I have told the SSG to ensure that this phase of distribution should get to even some notable farmers who do not belong to the different farmers’ associations. The committees at the Local Government Areas comprise the NLC, faith- based organisations, community Presidents- General, the traditional institutions and NGOs. “We also took a decision that the Civil Servants from levels 1-14 should run shift. Monday to Wednesday, others Thursday and Friday. We have not even cancelled it and we feel it’s an opportunity for them to go into farming. “There is no farming that is too small. We did that so that the money they would have used to buy fuel and come to work, they can save it and invest it in their farms. If everybody, the fifty thousand and something workers we have in this state, 60 per cent of them are engaged in farming, there will be food sufficiency. “I want to thank that lecturer who is a farmer. She has encouraged people to go into farming. Food is very important. We have fertile lands in Delta State. “As an administration that prioritises the welfare of citizens, we shall continue to explore ways and means to expand our coverage and mitigate the current hardship thereby bringing succour to our people.” Earlier in his speech, Chairman of the State Subsidy Palliative Committee and Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, commended Governor Oborevwori for the ongoing 317 road projects across the state with 76 of them spanning 170km length initiated by the Governor in the last one year. He said road projects in the state had contributed immensely to the ease of evacuation of farm produce and the economy of the state. Emu lauded the donors- the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, National Emergency Management Agency, and the National Security Adviser’s Office, for the various donations. |

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that a consensus has been reached on the long-debated new minimum wage between the Federal Government and organised labour. In his national broadcast to mark the 2024 Democracy Day in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu revealed that an executive bill will soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalise the new minimum wage agreement. He stated, “In this spirit, we have negotiated in good faith and with open arms with organised labour on a new national minimum wage. “We shall soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine what has been agreed upon as part of our law for the next five years or less.” Èdè Wa Ni: Ẹ Pàdé Ọ̀dọ́mọdébìnrin Ayanwura Tó Ń Fi Ìlù Lílù Yin Olódùmarè0.00 / 0.00 He emphasised that his administration chose a democratic approach over dictatorship in addressing the demands of labour unions. “In the face of labour’s call for a national strike, we did not seek to oppress or crack down on the workers as a dictatorial government would have done. We chose the path of cooperation over conflict. “No one was arrested or threatened. Instead, the labour leadership was invited to break bread and negotiate toward a good-faith resolution. Reasoned discussion and principled compromise are hallmarks of democracy. These themes shall continue to animate my policies and interaction with the constituent parts of our political economy,” he said. The President vowed to ensure that no Nigerian is oppressed. He added, “I take on this vital task without fear or favour and I commit myself to this work until we have built a Nigeria where no man is oppressed. In the end, our national greatness will not be achieved by travelling the easy road. It can only be achieved by taking the right one. “The words of the American President Franklin Roosevelt certainly ring true: There are many ways of going forward. But only one way of standing still”!” |
It's sad that Hunter Biden has been convicted by the jury because if his indulgence on drugs and owning a gun. This is a crime that he committed 25 years ago, should he still be taken to jail (even if for 1 month) after they must have worn him out with their court deliberations and other investigations for 25 years? Well, maybe he would not be taken to prison because of some factors like it was committed a long time ago, he has never gone to jail before, and especially because if his dad. I think by now Hunter would be sorry for what he did 25 years ago. And should be pardoned. |
Starting next month, some major digital currencies, such as Tether, will disappear from the European crypto market due to new EU regulations. This change could significantly disrupt trading on European crypto exchanges. Stablecoins are crypto currencies that are linked to a real currency, such as the US dollar, or to another cryptocurrency. The stablecoin is backed by that other currency, resulting in less volatile prices. A well-known example is Tether (USDT), which is linked to the dollar. However, due to new EU requirements around capital and transparency, most of these stablecoins will be banned. advertisement Tether, which currently holds 70% of its $160 billion market value, does not comply with the so-called MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) Regulation. The currency will disappear from the European Union next month, and is already no longer tradable on several online trading platforms. Tether is still available on the larger exchange platform Kraken, but that platform is also considering a trading halt. The banning of Tether will force European investors to look for other stablecoins when using crypto services outside of Europe. This could disrupt market liquidity and stability, warns analysis firm Steno Research. Because the European market is the only one applying the stricter rules, analysts fear that this will isolate the EU. The CEO of Tether does not see things working out between his company and the European regulator European Banking Authority. Currently, few stablecoins comply with the new EU rules. The world’s largest crypto exchange Binance and others are pinning their hopes on Circle’s USDC. That is the second-largest dollar stablecoin, which may be able to capture the market. Circle also has a small stablecoin linked to the euro, the EURC. EUR CoinVertible from Societe Generale, one of the few approved stablecoins, may also play a role, although it hasn’t proved popular. Tether itself is making no further moves to do comply with European rules. “Given the rules that hugely restrict access to crypto in the EU, it is clear that Europe is not waiting for it,” Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said in an earlier interview. In doing so, Ardoino falls mainly over the capital and coverage requirements imposed by the EU. Some 60% of the money Tether trades must be banked by the EU, to provide guarantees to investors. That is not the case, and Tether invests the money mostly in corporate bonds and other crypto currencies. It earns Tether decent interest income, but is thus risky for investors. |
Apple brings ChatGPT to iPhones in AI overhaul 11 hours ago By Zoe Kleinman, Technology editor • Liv McMahon, Technology reporter Share Reuters Apple boss Tim Cook pictured on-stage at WWDC 2024Reuters Apple boss Tim Cook pictured on-stage at WWDC 2024 Apple is to boost its Siri voice assistant and operating systems with OpenAI's ChatGPT as it seeks to catch up in the AI race. The iPhone maker announced the Siri makeover along with a number of other new features at its annual developers show on Monday. It is part of a new personalised AI system - called "Apple Intelligence" - that aims to offer users a way to navigate Apple devices more easily. Updates to its iPhone and Mac operating systems will allow access to ChatGPT through a partnership with developer OpenAI. ChatGPT can also be used to boost other tools, including text and content generation. The test version will become available in the autumn. Tim Cook, Apple chief executive, said the move would bring his company's products "to new heights" as he opened the Worldwide Developers Conference at the tech giant's headquarters in Cupertino, California. What is AI and how does it work? The announcement was not welcomed by all. Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and Twitter/X, threatened to ban iPhones from his companies due to "data security". "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI," Mr Musk said on X. "They're selling you down the river." Apple has faced pressure to introduce new AI features to its products after the rapid rise of rivals who have adopted the technology. After it was usurped by Microsoft as the world's most valuable company in January, Apple was overtaken again by Nvidia in early June. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said that while Apple's new personal AI system "should help placate nervous investors", its ChatGPT integration may reveal and create deeper problems for the firm. "Arguably this sees Apple admitting its limitations given ChatGPT will kick in at a point where Siri is no longer able to help a user," he told the BBC. Apple has been largely absent in the avalanche of AI products released by tech firms in recent months. Mr Cook told investors in 2023 that the company would approach the tech with care. On Monday, those plans were finally laid out. What is 'Apple Intelligence'? “Apple Intelligence” is not a product nor an app in its own right. It will become part of every app and Apple product customers use - whether it’s a writing assistant refining your message drafts or your diary being able to show you the best route to get to your next appointment. In that sense, it is similar to Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot – but you won’t have to pay extra to activate it. Siri, the voice assistant Apple acquired in 2010, has been refreshed with a new interface and chattier approach to help users navigate their devices and apps more seamlessly. Apple was keen to stress the security of Apple Intelligence during Monday's keynote. Some processing will be carried out on the device itself, while larger actions requiring more power will be sent to the cloud - but no data will be stored there, it said. This is vital to customers who pay premium prices for Apple's privacy promises. The system "puts powerful generative models right at the core of your iPhone, iPad and Mac," said Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi. "It draws on your personal context to give you intelligence that's most helpful and relevant for you, and it protects your privacy at every step." What does OpenAI and Apple deal mean? Apple's decision to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT tech had been widely anticipated but it is an unusual move for a company that so closely guards its own products. Google and Microsoft have recently faced scrutiny over errors made by their AI products in recent months, with the search giant rolling back a new feature in May after its erroneous answers went viral. For years Apple also refused to allow its customers to download any apps outside of the App Store on the grounds that they might not be secure, and would not allow any web browser other than its own Safari for the same reason. It only changed when forced to by EU legislation. Is it a sign of recognition that even Apple can’t compete with ChatGPT right now? Jury begins deliberating in historic Hunter Biden case 7 hours ago By Bernd Debusmann Jr, in court in Delaware, Share 0:13 Hunter Biden on criminal trial: ‘I think it went well’ Jurors in the Hunter Biden gun case have begun deliberating, and must now decide the fate of the US president's son. The 54-year-old is accused of lying about his drug use on a federal form while buying a weapon in 2018, and of illegally possessing a firearm while he was allegedly a drug user. For days, prosecutors presented evidence to suggest that Mr Biden was in the throes of addiction when he purchased the gun in Delaware. His defence team say he was in recovery and therefore not a drug user at the time. Mr Biden, who did not testify, denies the three related charges. If convicted, he could face up 25 years in prison. The BBC briefly questioned Mr Biden in downtown Wilmington after the jury began deliberations on Monday. "I think [today] went well," Mr Biden said. "We'll see though. We have to wait for the jury to come back." In a lengthy closing argument, prosecutor Leo Wise said "no-one is above the law" and the case is "no more important, or less important, because of who the defendant is". "The central issue in this case is whether he was an addict, and knew that he was," Mr Wise added. To make the government's case, Mr Wise pored over witness testimony from Mr Biden's former partners and his own memoir to try to show he was an active drug user around the time he bought the gun. The evidence, Mr Wise said, was "personal. It was ugly, and it was overwhelming". Mr Biden's defence team argue he was in recovery at the time, so was truthful when he indicated on the paperwork that he was not a drug user. Getty Images Hunter Biden and his wife MelissaGetty Images Hunter Biden and his wife Melissa The struggles and scandals of Hunter Biden His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, repeatedly pointed out to jurors that none of the text messages or witness testimony presented in court referenced "actual drug use" at the time of the purchase, arguing that the prosecution's case rests on "suspicion" and "conjecture". Mr Lowell accused prosecutors of using evidence of drug use over many years. As an example, Mr Lowell pointed out that testimony from Mr Biden's ex-girlfriend, Zoe Kestan, revealed “no pipes, no scales, no drugs, not even alcohol" at the time in question. Mr Biden's family members sat in the row behind him in Delaware's federal court, including First Lady Jill Biden - his step-mother and the president's wife - Ashley Biden, his half-sister, as well as the James and Valerie Biden, the president's siblings. Several visibly bristled when the prosecution said Mr Biden had "four years of active addiction", shaking their heads. Mr Biden, for his part, spent long periods staring intently at jurors as the closing arguments went on, occasionally taking notes and conferring with his legal team. During a break, his wife Melissa Cohen Biden embraced him and patted him on the shoulders, whispering into his ear. The start of proceedings on Monday focused on a legal technicality. Mr Biden's lawyers wanted the 12 jurors to be told during jury instructions that he had filled out the form "in good faith". The prosecution disagreed. The discrepancy is linked to the question of whether Mr Biden "knowingly" lied on the form. Last week, prosecutors played excerpts from an audiobook of Mr Biden's memoir, in which he talks about being addicted to crack cocaine for four years, a period that overlapped with his gun purchase. The court also heard from Mr Biden's ex-romantic partners, including Hallie Biden. Hallie - Mr Biden's brother's widow - testified that she found "remnants" of crack cocaine in Mr Biden's car, along with the gun. However, during cross-examination, Ms Biden confirmed she had not seen him using drugs around the time of his gun purchase. Throughout the trial, the defence has attempted to cast doubt on the memories of the prosecution’s witnesses. |
An aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing, a statement from the president's office has said. The Malawi Defence Force aircraft "went off the radar" after it left the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning, it added. The plane was supposed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, in the country’s north, just after 10:00 local time (09:00 BST). In a speech late on Monday, President Lazarus Chakwera said a search and rescue operation was continuing. "Soldiers are still on the ground carrying out the search and I have given strict orders that the operation should continue until the plane is found," he said, adding that it was a "heart-breaking situation". "I know that we are all frightened and concerned - I too am concerned. But I want to assure you that I am sparing no available resource to find that plane and I am holding onto every fibre of hope that we will find survivors." Mr Chakwera earlier cancelled his flight to the Bahamas, which was scheduled for Monday evening. The reason for the aircraft's disappearance is not yet known, General Valentino Phiri told Mr Chakwera. Moses Kunkuyu, Malawi's information minister, told the BBC efforts to find the aircraft are "intensive". Mr Chilima was on his way to represent the government at the burial of former cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara, who died three days ago. Mr Kunkuyu said: "The airport he was to land, which is in the northern part of Mzuzu, was the closest to where the funeral was taking place.” In 2022, Dr Chilima was arrested and charged on allegations that he accepted money in exchange for awarding government contracts . Last month, the court dropped the charges, giving no reasons for this decision. Who is Saulos Chilima? Prior to his political career, Dr Chilima held key leadership roles in multinational companies like Unilever and Coca Cola He is 51 years old He is married with two children Dr Chilima is described on the government's website as a "performer", "workaholic" and "an achiever" He holds a PhD in Knowledge Management |
