It was released six months after Grande's fourth studio album Sweetener (2018), which was written in the aftermath of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller's death and her divorce with then-fiancé Pete Davidson.

Tommy Brown, Max Martin, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Andrew "Pop" Wansel were among the writers and producers who joined Grande on the album in October 2018.

In comparison to her previous releases, Grande started to exert more artistic influence over her music with this one, and she moved away from the conventional album release schedule. Thank You, Next is a hip hop-influenced pop, R&B, and trap album.

The album's title track was released as the album's lead single on November 3, 2018, with no prior notice. The song was a huge commercial hit, peaking at number one in 12 countries and setting a slew of records, including the record for the most Spotify plays in a single day by a female artist.

It follows his two 2018 albums, Goodbye & Good Riddance, a solo album, and Wrld on Drugs, a collaboration mixtape with Future. The artwork and title of the album are based on the Twisted Metal video game series for the original PlayStation console. Brent Faiyaz, Clever, and Young Thug all make appearances on the song.
